REFLECTION

Be CONTENT
The days ahead are not rife with uncertainty: we know they will
be bad! Precisely how bad, and how we individually will be affected,
this is where things become fuzzy.
What are we to do then when times are bad?
FROM THE DESK OF On 9 November 2008 I preached a sermon in church about the
PASTOR CHIANG MING SHUN
Perils of Wealth, based on 1 Timothy 6:6-19. I said the problem with
money is that it makes us feel that we can only be contented if we
have what we have now, or if we had a little more. If we had less,
then we would be less contented, or not at all.
That’s true, isn’t it? We are only happy with pay increases,
not pay cuts, even if these cuts bring us to the level we were
before. Every year, we, subconsciously or otherwise, feel a need to
accumulate more. Life must get better.
At a time when many of us may have less, let me remind you
of the example of the Apostle Paul. In 2 Corinthians 11:23-30, Paul
compared himself with false teachers, and boasted:
Are they servants of Christ? ...I am more. I have worked much
harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely,
and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received
from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten
with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a
night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move.

METHODIST

In a time of spiritual decay, a group of Oxford undergraduates
led by John and Charles Wesley met regularly for Bible Study,
Prayer, and Fellowship. Their fellow students made fun of
these Holy Joes, calling them all sorts of names. One insult
in particular referred to the Wesleys' methodical approach to
Christian discipleship and growth - 'Methody' or 'Methodist'.
This name stuck and is now worn as a badge of pride, not
of shame. Our emphasis is still on the discipleship of every

YOUTHPHORIA: WHY SO SERIOUS?

an evangelistic effort to engage youths through a

The theme “Why So Serious”, was coined to invoke
introspection within youths and to get them to be
asking themselves what they were pursuing other
than academic excellence and worldly possessions.
Acclaimed Christian artiste, Larissa Lam graced the
event and performed a number of songs from her new
album, Revolutionary. The three hours spent together
was jam-packed with activities, with personable Ivin
Vikesh rousing the crowd in icebreakers and leading
them into a cheer for the event. Fairfield musician
Joshua Low and fellow Youthphorian Benedict Ooi
took over the stage and hyped up the crowd with
their music. Larissa and the Youthphoria band then
electrified the air with an infectious energy, letting
themselves (and the audience) get swept away by the
grooves and the moves of the music.

REACHING OUT
THROUGH SPORT
The Aldersgate netball team was formed in 2007 by a group of ladies who has a deep
passion for the sport and wanted an avenue to play and keep fit. Another objective was to
use netball as a platform to reach out to other ladies who might share the same passion or
simply wish to learn. This gave many of us the opportuntity to invite our ex school team-
mates to join us.
We enjoyed the catch-ups and fellowship. Getting to see our long-lost friends is a big
plus. The companionship and support from the team is something that many of us appreci-
ate and treasure. The encouragements that we receive from and give each other helped us
grow not only as a good sportswoman but also as a Christian woman. The frankness of every-
body taught me how to speak the truth with love and how to love the unlovable.
The 18 member team currently plays in the Netball Agape cup, a league made up of
teams from several churches. This debut season saw us finish third in the table and come

BAPTISM RETREAT

MORE

By JASON BIAN

In September, I attended an overnight

baptism class retreat at LifeSprings
Canossian Spirituality Centre.
LifeSprings is located in a very quiet
area amongst hills, forest and meadows.
It took me away from the stress, noise and
hectic pace and distractions of my daily life.
In this refreshing and natural environment,
I took walks in the morning with Jesus and
had peace in my heart. I opened my eyes
to the wonderful world that God created;
the tranquility and beauty of the natural

from their employers, who subject them to harsh living environments and delayed

Mistletole
Those that kiss under a mistletoe are promised happiness and good fortune.
However, in ancient Rome, more important events took place under the
mistletoe. The mistletoe was regarded as a symbol of peace. Under the
mistletoe, enemies would speak of peace and lay down their weapons
and embrace. The practice of kissing was likely to have originated from the
Scandinavians’ who associated the plant with Frigga, their goddess of love.

THE PRICE
OF FREEDOM
By LIM YI-LIN

AS PART of my Civil Service Internship in university, I had the

opportunity to visit Changi Prison (CP), Singapore’s main prison.
But as I stood in the cell or a day room for a short 10 minutes, it felt
almost like eternity.
The day room made me feel a little claustrophobic - the 4.5m
by 2.5m area is shared among four inmates, inclusive of their
lavatory. There is no form of privacy to speak of, only a low wall
acting as a shield for modesty.
Four plastic storage boxes, each roughly three times the size of
an average shoebox, were laid neatly against the wall, containing
some of the inmates’ permitted personal belongings. In each box
were up to seven books, letters and a pencil.

EUTHANASIA

MERCY KILLING OR
JUST KILLING?
By CHEN QIULUAN

I RECALL having a class of twenty people against a group of

five of us in a debate on euthanasia during one of my nursing
tutorials at Nanyang Polytechnic. My group was against
euthanasia, and the rest of the class felt that it was right and
the better choice to let someone die peacefully instead of
suffering the torture of their failing health.
Till today I still stand firm in my belief that euthanasia is
never an option for the people that I am nursing nor my family
or myself.
I entered nursing with the mindset that I will use the skills
that I have learnt to heal, not kill. What difference would it be
between a murderer and me if I were to endorse euthanasia?
Not much I would say.

GOD’S GOLDEN
MIRACLE
By ROSALIND CHUA

On the morning of 13 August 2008, my sister Irene phoned me

from Perth to tell me the most astounding news of her life – God
had implanted a gold tooth in her mouth!
The discovery of this gold molar, so perfectly formed and
complete in pure gold, left her so overwhelmed that all she could
do was stand by her bathroom sink and cry. But those were tears
of joy, hallelujah! Her husband, on hearing Irene’s cry, rushed to
the bathroom and was equally speechless by what he saw.
Irene emigrated to Perth 30 years ago with her family. She
helps out in her husband’s medical clinic and regularly prays
for their patients out of genuine concern for their well-being. A
firm believer in the power of prayers, Irene wakes up at five every
morning to pray with her husband. She also meets with her lady
friend – her “prayer partner” if you will – at least once or twice
weekly for prayers, fellowship, and often, visitations to pray for and
with the sick.
Through all these, Irene has seen many of God’s intervention
and miracles happening.
Every so often, Irene could hear God speaking to her, instructing
her to pray for some particular individuals, many of whom she
doesn’t even know.

was called Mission Brussels. When I learnt last year that Gracia – whom I can
now officially call my fiancee - had secured a place in her university’s journal-
ism trip to Europe, it set me thinking. We had been dating for some five years
and I felt that we were both ready to take our relationship to the next level
after her graduation. I first worked out my budget and then rounded up my
closest buddies to help brainstorm on how I could propose. Many chipped
in with ideas on the e-mail thread I started and I was grateful that my best
friend, Wee Teck, even decided to fly there with me to share in the moment.

DAY 1: Pre-production planning

After a heart-warming send-off at the airport by our excited friends, Wee
Teck and I arrived in Brussels, capital of Belgium, on a Friday afternoon. The
plan was to do a recce of the Grand Place, the location where I intend to
propose.
Grand Place, or Grote Markt, is probably the most well-known landmark
in Brussels. Home to the city’s town hall, the grand market square dates as
far back as the 15th century and has withstood massive bombardments by
the French. Since both Gracia and I are history buffs, I thought the choice of
location would be ideal.
We sat at the square to observe the human traffic and began talking to
locals to determine the perfect time to propose. A Belgian policeman told
me the square is usually crowded with tourists during the day and evenings.
When I explained that I was planning to propose to my girlfriend, he tried
to dissuade me as he didn’t believe in marriage. “Propose? Why would you
want to do that?” he asked jokingly. But I was unfazed.
The rest of the day was spent satisfying our tummies. There is an abun-
dance of seafood in Brussels because of her proximity to the coastal areas. Day 2: Pre-production preparation
One must-try is mussels, which go fabulously well with their famous Belgian One more day to D-day as Gracia flies in with her

MONGOLIA
DOING GOD’S WORK

IN
BY IVIN VIKNESH

I WAS fascinated by the sight of this woman cleansing an animal organ. I could not guess what it
was even as I saw some dark coloured stuff oozing out of its openings. I did not really make much
of it, until the next day, when I realised during dinner that horse intestines and liver were being
served! It all made sense now. Never had I ever imagined eating horse intestines and liver as a
starter in a meal. Not until I went to Mongolia.
In March this year, I had the honour of leading a group of nine polytechnic students, all of
whom were campus crusaders, to Mongolia for about a month. Indeed, this mission trip proved to
be an unforgettable experience for all of us.
During the first three weeks, we were busy with campus ministry work which involved con-
ducting English classes for about 38 Mongolian university students. The friendship that was thus

36 liveline DEC 08
could sense the spiritual hunger in the students. Many of them
were blindly following some form of religion, yet were in fact
seeking something more compelling that could truly satisfy
them spiritually.
In the fourth week, we moved into ministry work with the
nomads, starting with a 12-hour van ride into the wilderness of
Mongolia. We stayed with a nomadic family in their traditional
Mongolian tent called “ger,” and that’s how I got the oppor-
tunity to taste horse’s intestines! Ger, the nomads’ traditional
dwelling, is a huge round
tent made with felt. This
helps to keep the inside
warm during winter and
cool during summer.
The interior organisa-
tion of a “ger” is identical
everywhere: the door faces
the south; the men’s place is
in the west part; the north
side is the place for hon-
oured guests or old people,
as well as the family altar;
the east side is the women’s
territory. The stove occupies
the centre of the ger.
Nomads typically spend a good part of their day tending
to their livestock – watching over, milking, shearing, or comb-
ing – to produce felt and felt clothes, cheese and other dairy
products. During our stay with the family, we helped with their
daily chores, such as waking up in the morning to give water
to the horses, bringing the sheep out to graze, drawing water
from the well, and even going around picking up dried cow
dung. Dried cow dung is used as fuel, which the nomads burn
to keep themselves warm.
Whenever opportunities arose, we would share Christ with
the help of an interpreter. Indeed for us, it was an eye-opening
experience of how evangelism could be carried out so differ-
ently.
Besides the many lessons I learned about mission work,
God also taught me about love. Managing nine teenagers on
an overseas trip, and having to deal with all sorts of issues, in-
cluding their “emoism” and at times, disappearing acts, was
not easy. There was a night I woke up and found my patience
tested to such a limit that I really felt like giving one particular
