When a family sawmill business
ended, four siblings went separate

build a successful hydroexcavation
firm with diverse clients.

Family

amily has always been important for Kenny Baker and his
three siblings. They were close growing up and eventually
worked together as well. Now, the brothers and sister are
running their own hydroexcavation company.
Baker, his two brothers and one sister started Baker
Hydro-Excavating after leaving the family logging business
where they had worked for most of their lives.
As a family, we started in the logging business thinking that was going to
be our career, says Baker. My dad had a sawmill with my grandpa, and after
my grandpa passed my dad and another family member became partners.
Baker and his brother Kevin worked at the sawmill along with their dad,
while younger siblings Wendy and Allan grew up around it.
Their father passed away in 2000, and the family lost control of the sawmill the next year. The four siblings were forced to find other work, but after 10
years in separate jobs, they joined forces again to start Baker Hydro-Excavating,
based in Mountain View, Wyoming.

The company started doing work in the oilfields with just one
hydroexcavator, but by mid-2012 there were five trucks in the inventory.
Now, the company also does utility and construction work, and the fleet
includes 11 hydroexcavators and 13 support trucks.
FINDING NEW WORK
After the passing of their father, Baker and his siblings Kevin, Allan
and Wendy had to relinquish control of the mill to another family who also
had ownership in the business.
The family members picked up new jobs Baker and Allan in nearby
mines, Wendy as a certified nursing assistant and Kevin with several
hydroexcavation companies.
In late 2010, Kevin approached Baker with an idea to start a hydroexcavation business. He talked it over with the rest of his siblings and wheels went
into motion. It was scary starting something new, Baker says. Our mom had
received a settlement from the sawmill business, and she allowed us to use a

portion of the money to start this business. It takes a lot of money to get started
in this work.
They purchased their first hydroexcavator in November 2011, and business
took off from there. We decided as a family that we would get one truck and
see how the business went, Baker says. Within a month, the demand was
so high that we purchased our second hydrovac. We had to stay ahead of
the work.
The company steadily expanded to 11 trucks and now has a second location. Besides its headquarters in Mountain View, Baker Hydro-Excavating has
a satellite office in Casper, Wyoming, run by Kelly Webb. The company works
throughout Wyoming, Colorado and Utah.

IN THE OILFIELDS
At startup, Baker Hydro-Excavating found itself in the middle of an oil
boom, making that industry an obvious focus.
Oil and gas are still our biggest industries served, but we go to a lot of the
mines and do a little work there, Baker says. We work with utility companies
and we do work for the local highway department.
In the oil and gas industry, Baker Hydro-Excavating does jobs such as rig
cleaning, pit cleaning, pressure washing, oilfield tank cleaning, waste removal,
remote digging and hot-oil services.
I found more and more as we worked in oil and gas that we needed to
diversify, Baker says. Oil prices just tanked out, a lot of people are struggling
and oil companies are holding off on projects. We wanted to diversify a little bit
more so we didnt have to rely totally on the oil and gas industry.
In utility work, the company does slot trenching, daylighting and culvert
and cattle guard clean-outs. Cattle guards are obstacles used to prevent livestock from passing along a road that cuts through fencing surrounding a piece
of land. The cattle guards consist of a depression in the road covered by a grid
of bars or tubes, normally made of metal.
Throughout the year, water and dirt accumulate in the culverts and cattle
guards, blocking the flow of water or filling in under the cattle guard, Baker

says. We get called out to clean the debris that has

settled in the pipe. We have a rotating head that propels itself through to clean out the pipe.
Hydroexcavators also enable crews to use the
hose to get in where backhoes and other large equipment cant reach. On a typical workday, the company
has all of its hydroexcavators in the field with two-man
crews in each truck. The number of units in the field
does depend on the client demand.
Lately with the oil and gas prices the way they
are, weve been running four to six crews out there a
day, Baker says.
FINDING TOUGH JOBS
A focus on hydroexcavation can bring some challenging jobs. Recently at a compressor station company crews were hired to expose 32 natural gas lines
running into the station and find the main power line

WELCOME TO YOUR
NEW MAN CAVE

A FAMILY AFFAIR
Working with family in a business can bring
stress, but the Baker family has found a way to
move past that.
It has its ups and downs at times, but in the
end we work together as a united team, Kenny
Baker says.
Kenny, Allan and Kevin Baker and their sister Wendy Gerrard have worked together since
they were young, first alongside their dad at a
family-owned sawmill, and now as shareowners
of Baker Hydro-Excavating.
While there can be struggles in working
with family, the four find that it can also make
their business stronger: They know each others
strengths and weaknesses and keep lines of
communication open.
We all have the same goal in mind to make
our business the best it can be: Providing good
service to our clients and knowing that our father would be proud of what we have built,
Baker says.
They each have their own duties. Baker
handles the office, Allan handles maintenance,
Wendy runs the safety program and Kevin works
in the field running a hydroexcavator. Baker and
Allan have kept their jobs at a local mine.
Plenty of other family members are
involved in the business. Bakers wife, Stephanie,
and Kevins daughter, Halie, serve as secretaries.
Gerrards husband is a laborer. Bakers sons also
work for the company, Russell as an electrician
and Marcus as a mechanic.
Says Baker, We work through the tough
decisions that in the end make us a better
business.

to it. We were asked to get this done in two days because it was where all the
lines from the wellheads were running into, Baker says. They didnt want it
down very long because it would shut down the wellhead then.
Another problem at the site was mobility: The site was fenced in with
barely enough room for trucks to move around. The company had five trucks
digging, each one taking a section and exposing the lines within it.
The debris was clay with some hard shale that we dug through to expose
the lines, Baker says. We were able to get it all done in time, and it took a lot
of teamwork.
Another recent job had the company digging holes for cement pillars.
The client couldnt get a drill inside the location where the pillars were to go.
Baker Hydro-Excavating crews remotely dug the holes using the hydroexcavators hoses.
The pillar holes had to be precise so they could pour in the cement,
Baker says.
MORE THAN JUST HYDROEXCAVATION
Just a year after starting operations, the company owners knew they had
an opportunity to expand services even more into something that didnt involve
digging. Thats when they moved into power washing services.
They complemented what we do, says Baker.
Baker and his brother Kevin found their way into the new service as they
traveled to oilfield sites looking for work. The brothers pulled up to a site and
talked to the manager who said there was no work for them.
As they began to pull away, the manager ran back out. They had
this building that was covered in film from oil compressors that four other

says. I went up to it and did a test strip with a cleaning chemical we use, and
it came right off.
Since then, the service has grown considerably, and now the company
considers it one of its specialties. The company uses power washers
manufactured by Hydro Tek.

Oil and gas are still our biggest industries served, but we
go to a lot of the mines and do a little work there.
Kenny Baker

Baker says, We use the tools to clean buildings in the oilfields, using
environmentally safe cleaning agents along with the power washer to ensure
the best job possible.
SAFETY BRINGS WORK
A big part of landing clients for Baker Hydro-Excavating is the use of
services such as ISnetworld, Veriforce and PEC Premier companies that
track contractors safety compliance certifications. Potential clients can look up
contractors through those services websites.
A lot of the companies we work for require us to have one of those three
services, Baker says. These companies are a resource for prospective clients,
informing them about your company.
Employees who work in the field must undergo Safeland training before
even stepping foot on a hydroexcavator. The company also requires employees
to take part in weekly safety meetings and conducts daily job safety analysis
reports on each job.

If a greenhorn comes in with
no experience, he will go with a crew
of two and work with them for two
weeks until he feels comfortable running that whole truck and knowing the
safety procedures, Baker says. Before he can go out on his own, he must
demonstrate to us that he can handle it.
SLOWING DOWN
Now that the company has grown so fast in just four years, Baker says its
time to slow down: We dont want to grow too fast. We want to settle down,
and the goal is to get everything paid down.
The company was scheduled to get three or four new trucks in the near
future, but decided to wait until the market settles especially on the oil and
gas side. In the meantime, Baker plans to implement a Hows My Driving?
incentive for the employees. If they receive a good review from a customer,
theyll receive an award.
Our employees are a big part of our growth, Baker says. They do their
job in a timely manner while keeping safety in mind.
Baker believes the hydroexcavation industry is still in its infancy in the
U.S., and hes excited to see what it becomes: In this line of work there are
going to be a lot of changes with how hydroexcavators are used. There are a
lot of utility lines and pipelines going in the ground, which makes it perfect for
hydroexcavation work. GOMC

PIPE WRANGLER
Mechanical rig helps Michigan-based service provider
get a handle on efficiency and employee safety
By Ken Wysocky

ripping production pipe in and out of wells used to be a timeconsuming, high-risk task for roughnecks employed by Team Services
LLC, which provides well services and completion rigs for oil and
natural gas drillers in the Marcellus and Bakken shale plays. But that all
changed dramatically when the company invested in two mechanical pipe
handlers made by Hawker Well Works.
Before, it used to take crews from the Kalkaska, Michigan-based
company about a 12-hour day to manually install the 200 to 300 joints
30- to 32-foot-long sections of 2 7/8-inch-diameter production pipe
typically needed for each well. Each joint weighs about 225 to 300 pounds,
so wrangling them into the well while standing on a 25- to 30-foot-tall
drilling platform was difficult for rig handlers.

By using this machine, we can work very fast, which is a

big selling point if you can trip pipe faster and more
efficiently, then the customer will call us again the next day.
Tom Goosman

The joints are awkward to handle, says Tom Goosman, the North
Dakota area manager for Team Services, which was established in 2001 and
employs 150 people and operates facilities in Mercer, Pennsylvania, and
Williston, North Dakota. A couple or three guys have to pick them up by
hand and struggle with them.

The mechanical pipe handler, which weighs 20,000 pounds and can be
towed by a medium-duty truck, also reduces the risk of injuries, particularly
hand-related injuries, such as pinched or smashed fingers. Thats why
we try to incorporate as much mechanical equipment into the process as
possible, Goosman notes. When something mechanical breaks, you can
fix it. But if you break a hand, its pretty hard to replace.
Along with the Hawker pipe handlers, Team Services relies on mud
pumps made by National Oilwell Varco and Gardner Denver, mobile workover

CHEAPER
HOUSING COMING
Housing industry finally catching up with
oil and gas boom in the Bakken
By Cory Dellenbach

t wasnt that long ago when renting

a small apartment in some areas of
North Dakota cost as much as living in
Manhattan, but now the housing market is
starting to catch up to the oil boom and
prices are starting to fall.
Prices have dropped about 15 to
20 percent in the last several months as
dozens of new apartment buildings have
opened in Williston, Watford City and
other cities across the Bakken Shale.

I could see the quality of life improve for some

people if they arent worried each month
about how theyre going to make rent.
Justin Hammer

There is still demand for apartments

and there are still about 1,800 unfilled
energy-related jobs in North Dakota, but
the housing shortage isnt like it was when
the oil boom began six years ago.
APARTMENTS KEEP COMING
When the boom began in 2009,
oilfield workers were often sleeping in cars
overnight because there wasnt enough
housing, but dozens of new properties have
opened in the last two years and at least 20
more are opening in 2015.
Youre starting to see prices fall this
year as more units come online, says Terry
Metzler of Granite Peak Development.
His company has built apartments and a
shopping center in Williston and has an
additional 400 apartments and houses
under construction.
Williston issued building permits for
1,290 apartment units and 333 single20

family homes in 2014. It doesnt appear as

though its slowing down either as Stropiq,
a local developer, is seeking approval for
a $500 million development just outside
Williston that includes retail and office
space, as well as 900 apartments and
townhomes.
Property managers say they havent
had any problem filling the units as they
become available. Even with oil prices
falling, most apartment buildings are 92 to
95 percent full, according to the Williston
Chamber of Commerce.
You cant build a vibrant community
with services, quality of life and families
when you have some of the highest rents
and costs in the nation, says Shawn
Wenko, Willistons director of economic
development.
In Dickinson, where Whiting
Petroleum is based, the price of a twobedroom apartment at Sterling Groups
Sierra Ridge was cut from $2,159 to $1,775.
I could see the quality of life improve
for some people if they arent worried each
month about how theyre going to make
rent, says Justin Hammer of IRET, which
owns apartment buildings in Williston
and Minot.
HOUSING MARKET
DOESNT TAKE HIT
North Dakota didnt take the hit that
most states took in 2009. Its unemployment

rate never climbed above 4.2 percent,

and in December 2013 it had the lowest
unemployment rate in the country.
Some states, including North
Dakota, have what everyone wishes they
had: demand, says Keith Gumbinger, vice
president of HSH.com.
North Dakota real estate agent John
Knosalla says demand for homes exploded
in 2013 and many sales turned into bidding
wars with several potential buyers. Every
offer was a competition, and thats just
not typical.
Knosallas business has doubled every
year for the last four years. In 2014 he
closed on 148 homes.
The increased demand has also put
a strain on carpenters, plumbers and
electricians.

Some states, including North

Dakota, have what everyone
wishes they had: demand.
Keith Gumbinger

They are pining for framers,

Knosalla says. New construction costs
have skyrocketed because there is so much
work and not enough time or people to get
it all done. Tradesmen are naming their
prices and builders just have to pay it.
STILL MORE ROOM
Many developers also say they are
confident the states oil industry will not
go belly up like it did during two previous
busts in the 1950s and 80s.
Even with all the apartments being
built and more homes going up, real
estate companies still see room for more
development.
We still, even with all were building,
dont have enough housing in this region,
Metzler says. GOMC

LIFE IN THE
EAGLE FORD
Texas communities continue
growing, plan for future
By Greg Bates

enture onto the Gonzales Economic Development Corporations

website, scroll to the bottom of
the home page and one thing prominently
stands out: Theres a NASDAQ graphic listing the daily price for a barrel of crude oil.
Its blatantly obvious the small city in
the heart of the Eagle Ford Shale lives and
dies by the rich natural resource.
Gonzales is just one of many cities in
southeastern Texas to feel the impact of the
oil boom in recent years. Some cities are
taking full advantage of their opportunities,
while others are holding back, not wanting
their city to come crashing down if the oil
wells all of a sudden end up bone dry.

Trailers housing drill workers line a

city park in Gonzales, Texas, in 2012.
The communities of Gonzales, Cotulla
and Karnes City have seen big growth
thanks to the Eagle Ford Shale play,
even now with oil prices falling.

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - MAY 2015

In Gonzales, the shale play which

is 50 miles wide by 400 miles long has
been a magnificent thing.
At $105 a barrel, it was great. At $50
a barrel, its actually still pretty great,
Gonzales City Manager Allen Barnes says.
Were very fortunate, we have some very
large producers in our county and they
seem to be doing pretty well. Our sales tax,
every month its increased.
Gonzales, which is the second oldest
city in the state and was the site of the first
battle during the Texas Revolution, was a
busy tourist town pre-Eagle Ford. Now, the
play has proved to be a great supplement
for the visitors who are entering the city.

Since Barnes took over his position

at the city nearly four years ago, Gonzales
population has increased by more than 40
percent, going from 7,237 people at the last
census to about 10,000 (figuring there are
3,300 utility accounts at 3.09 people per
household).
Gonzales, which is northeast of San
Antonio, has 611 hotel rooms, including
two boutique hotels, and a slew of
new restaurants. The citys two largest
supermarkets are thriving. Wal-Mart went
from a D classification to A, and H-E-B
nearly tripled the size of its grocery store.

At $105 a barrel, it was great.

At $50 a barrel, its actually
still pretty great. Were very
fortunate, we have some
very large producers in our
county and they seem to
be doing pretty well.
Allen Barnes

Banks have experienced an influx

of cash, and the local school district is
struggling to provide enough classroom
space for all its new students.
Its been a challenge to keep up with
the oilfield, with services for our residents,
Barnes says.
Barnes says Gonzales which is
considered the eastern hub of the Eagle
Ford has fared better than a lot of cities
in the area because its city council took an
assertive role in planning for the oilfield.
Any revenue that we get that is oilfield
related, they go for one-time expenses.
Theyre not for operating expenses,
Barnes says. They may buy a police car,
for example.
The city has kept oil-related money
separate because its council understands
the boom-and-bust cycle for oilfields runs
about every 10 years. Gonzales isnt solely
reliant on oil money.
When planning, Gonzales also made
sure it restricted where man camps can be
formed, and none are in the city limits.

Barnes notes city residents seem to like having the oilfields in their
backyards.
There are a lot of folks that became millionaires overnight, Barnes says.
Theres one guy that someone told me makes almost $160,000 a day. That
was at $105 a barrel, so the poor guys only making $80,000 a day now. I
dont know if thats true, because you hear all the urban myths.
Its been an interesting start of the year for those who are working the
Eagle Ford in Gonzales.
The life of the Eagle Ford for the past three or four years has been slow
from about December to the first of March, and this year it hasnt been,
Barnes says. I dont know how to interpret that, because usually in the
winter time theres not a lot of truck traffic; theres not a lot of activity in the
area, but the activity is still there. I dont know if these guys are trying to
produce all that they can.
Cotulla: Almost tripled its population
Down the road 160 miles to the southwest of Gonzales, the City of
Cotulla is also reaping the benefits of the Eagle Ford.
Cotullas population has shot up in the last four years from 3,600 to just
shy of 10,000. During the day, it is estimated the population reaches 15,00016,000, according to City Manager Larry Dovalina.
As far as the overall impact from its initial step, it probably tripled the
size of our city, created all these infrastructure demands and needs that we
ended up having to come up with, Dovalina says. In the process, we were
able to start working on the quality of life in the community. Weve had some
issues, but weve also had some good opportunities to get ahead.
The city is just 70 miles from the Mexican border and has changed
immensely in seven years since Dovalina took over his post. Back then,
Cotulla was hurting financially. However, thats certainly not the case
any longer.
It was a small, rural community as many of them are across the country,
and weve also got a small industrial component about 2 miles north of
us and weve got a different refinery south of us, Dovalina says. We are
sitting in a logistical hub where we benefit from I-35, which is a major trade
transportation route between Canada, U.S. and Mexico. We sit right on there,
so were able to take advantage of that and take advantage of the trucking
operations that go through here, and so were reaping a lot of benefits.
The Eagle Ford has created numerous jobs, and new businesses are
flourishing in town. In fact, Cotulla recently announced that in the last four
years its had $1.5 billion in investments that have been done in about a 10mile radius of the city.
The small town has also become a gold mine for the hotel industry.
I think we became hotel capital of the Eagle Ford Shale, Dovalina says.
We have about 23 hotels that have been constructed and I want to say weve
got three or four that are in the process of being constructed.
Karnes City: Seeking the right developments
Not every city within the Eagle Ford is jumping at the chance to add
any type of business and have exponential growth. Karnes City, which is
southeast of San Antonio, hasnt increased its population its steady at
3,000 people since the oil boom started.
Karnes City is trying to grow in an orderly manner and not react to
the change. The citys long-term plan is to attract developments that will

sustain even when the Eagle Ford isnt around, says Karnes City Development
Manager Ray Kroll.
Some things we welcome with open arms and some things weve worked
very hard to keep out, Kroll says. We dont want the crew camps.

Were able to take advantage of ... the trucking

operations that go through here, and so were
reaping a lot of benefits.
Larry Dovalina

By comparison, Karnes County has grown significantly, adding a number

of hotels and bars. In Kenedy, 4 miles from Karnes City, 20 hotels have sprung
up in the last four years. However, Karnes City has not allowed rapid, quick
developments to take place.
It would be available for the correct type of investment or development, but
basically what this city wants would be single-family homes and entertainment
opportunities and things like that, Kroll says.
Increased revenue is the main area that has been beneficial to Karnes City.
Increased revenue means an increase in the number of people, so it
increases the amount of money the city must spend just to keep our head above
water, Kroll says. Just because [an oil boom] happens doesnt mean a city is
flush with cash. It takes an awful lot of money to keep up with the demands
that are brought on by what were seeing. Its a tight rope that you have to walk
on a daily basis.
The people of Karnes City seem to back the citys approach to
being cautious.
Most of the people that are around here that are more impacted by it
landowners, things like that look at it as another boom and bust, Kroll
says. We were riding high for a while, now the price of oil has affected things
drastically. Its kind of the wait-and-see attitude and no one has invested a great
deal of money.
Dovalina thinks Cotulla can keep flourishing as a city well after the Eagle
Ford has pumped its last drop of oil, which economists think might last for two
decades. Its all about planning and being ready for the inevitable.
I think with good management, you can continue to draw positive
numbers from sales taxes and hotel taxes and be able to invest them in an
appropriate way without putting the citys finances at risk, and youll be OK,
Dovalina says.
In Gonzales, Barnes likes the future of where his city is headed.
I think its bright, Barnes says. I think the field cycles about every 10
years, thereabouts. I think that well see a climb to $65 and $75 a barrel and
things will be pretty good. GOMC

Eye on the Industry

KEEPING A CLOSER
EYE ON PIPELINES
SCADA system could have detected leak before
more damage was done in North Dakota
By Cory Dellenbach

pipeline leak that spilled nearly

3 million gallons of salt water
and contaminated a creek and
two rivers near Williston, North Dakota,
could have been prevented with the proper
equipment.
According to the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources, the pipeline could have been monitored remotely,
but the system wasnt turned on. Instead,
Meadowlark Midstream relied on checking
meters by hand rather than the sophisticated system that had been installed.

There is such a quagmire of jurisdictional

responsibility for pipelines. Its a challenge
when an incident occurs and who is
responsible to do the investigation
to see what happened.
Brian Kalk

The department estimates that the

pipeline was leaking for more than 12
days before the rupture was discovered on
Jan. 6.
MONITORING THE PIPELINES
The pipeline that ruptured was
transporting produced water from 40 well
pads to a saltwater disposal well north of
Williston.
The pipelines were equipped with
flowmeters, which could have been
monitored through the offsite SCADA
systems, but Meadowlark wasnt using it.
They had to drive out to the site,
read the number on the meter, and then go
site to site, read the numbers and sit down
24

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - MAY 2015

with a computer and add them up to try to

see if there were differences that indicated
a leak, says Lynn Helms, director of the
Department of Mineral Resources.
Meadowlark had done monthly flyover
inspections of its pipeline as recently as
Dec. 30, but there was no evidence of a
leak at that time, Helms says.
State legislation being proposed
would strengthen requirements for pipeline
monitoring in North Dakota, but the states
Industrial Commission does not currently
require gathering pipelines to have meters
or monitoring systems.
About 50,000 miles of pipeline is
buried throughout North Dakota, carrying
everything from oil and natural gas to salt
water and freshwater.
There is such a quagmire of
jurisdictional responsibility for pipelines,
says Brian Kalk, North Dakota Public
Service commissioner. Its a challenge
when an incident occurs and who is
responsible to do the investigation to see
what happened.
The Public Service Commission
oversees the siting of transmission lines
for natural gas and oil in the state, but
only oversees the safety of the natural gas
lines. The Office of Pipeline Safety within
the U.S. Department of Transportations
Pipeline and Hazardous Materials
Safety Administration has regulatory
responsibility for inspecting and enforcing
pipeline safety regulations for interstate
and intrastate pipelines carrying hazardous
liquid in North Dakota, except for natural
gas. The Department of Mineral Resources
Oil and Gas Division has broad safety and
siting jurisdiction over pipelines as part of
its well-permitting process.

In February, the Department of Mineral Resources hired two pipeline inspectors, filling positions that had been vacant
for months. The inspectors will oversee
more than 20,000 miles of crude oil,
water and other pipelines that fall under the
departments jurisdiction.
Under new legislation being proposed
to strengthen safety, operators of the pipelines would have to hire certified thirdparty pipeline inspectors to inspect their
work. One of the roles of the new state
pipeline inspectors would be to inspect
the inspectors and ensure that theyre
doing their jobs properly, Helms says.
By comparison, the state of Pennsylvania has six inspectors who are located
across the state and on call 24 hours a day
for emergencies. They check for compliance with state and federal gas pipeline
safety regulations.
CLEANING THE SPILL
The pipeline rupture released about
70,000 barrels of produced water, the largest spill of its kind in North Dakota. The
brine which can contain oil, fracking
fluid and other chemical compounds is
more difficult to clean up than oil, according to officials.
The levels of chloride and ammonia
detected at the rupture site were acutely
toxic to fish, according to the states
Department of Health. The spill contaminated groundwater near Blacktail Creek
and cleanup is expected to take at least
five years.
I think five years would be very
optimistic, says Dave Glatt, chief of the
Environmental Health Section. Ten years,
there still may be talk about this.
Before regulators will allow Meadowlark Midsteam to resume operation on the
produced waterlines, they are requiring the
use of SCADA, Helms says.
We want real-time pressure readings,
meter readings and temperature readings,
Helms says. GOMC

STREAMLINING

SERVICE

Making the change from paper-based operations to tablet-based

enterprise software can yield big efficiency gains
By Mary Shafer

SCOTT SPENCER REALIZED SOON AFTER BUYING SEATTLES JIM

Dandy Sewer & Plumbing that it was time for a big change in how the
administrative side of the business was run. Its such a redundant process
with paper, he says. So many hands touch each paper with so much
backwork, doing separate data entry on every invoice.
His managers were already using Apple iPhones, and they wanted to find
a digital solution they were familiar with, so they decided to move dispatching,
invoicing and reporting to software they could run on iPads. After spending
some time researching their options, they chose Smart Service.
This routing, scheduling and dispatching software integrates easily
with QuickBooks and allows immediate, real-time information on daily
productivity for use at the office. The add-on iFleet app extends functionality
into the field through tablets for service technicians, which allows them to
build work orders and enter job and customer notes, job history, signature
capture and more.
He knew preparing his staff for the shift from paper to digital would
be critical in getting them to buy in. Management was directly involved in
coming up with the new system, Spencer says. Our dispatcher and plumbing
manager had gone through online tutorials to test three different programs
and came up with the final option. We then announced three weeks ahead of
time to field and office staff that we were going paperless.
Management initially ran through the process of using Smart Service
with the technicians and let them know going back to paper was no longer an
option. Once they saw how really easy it is, it was no problem, says Spencer.
Its incredibly user friendly and intuitive.
I let all the guys take their iPad home for a week or two, put their email
on it and play with it. This let them get used to the new tool before activating
the software so they didnt have to take it all in at once. Guys dont like to
read directions, so well typically do it wrong at first, but the Apple stuff is
just so easy to use.
I knew going in that it would be more expensive to use Apple products,
but I thought it would be kind of a carrot to get the guys to accept the stick
of change. It gave them something to be proud of, walking into a customers
home with state-of-the-art technology. The bonus is that in areas where we
cant pick up a Wi-Fi signal, the iPads can use our iPhone personal hotspots
quickly and automatically.

Smart Service is a module-based solution created expressly for service-based businesses.

It integrates seamlessly with the popular QuickBooks accounting software to make double
entry of customer and job data unnecessary. IFleet is the field component module.

Its easy to like something that just works so well, he says. Id say within
a day or so even my most resistant guys were doing as well as everyone else.
To leverage the newly open minds, We went back to the online tutorial
and showed them how it would make their jobs easier. We demonstrated
how the iPads could be used with voice commands instead of typing, which
is faster and easier. That was a major plus in their minds, not having to fool
around with those tiny keyboards.
Technicians are still responsible for the accuracy of their entries, but
an office person does proofread them before sending out any customer
paperwork. We worked all that out in the first three months, especially with
errors introduced by autocorrect. We had some good chuckles over those,
Spencer recalls.
UPS AND DOWNS
Still, Spencer admits the process wasnt without its rough spots. A
couple guys were scared to death of it and wanted nothing to do with the
tablet-based system, he says. So we wanted to make it something to be

proud of. IPads are still novel and carry something of a prestige factor, so we
made it clear we were issuing them each a personal iPad that they could also
take home to use.
There were, of course, the nuts-and-bolts issues to be expected in the
introduction of any new process. The first two to three weeks we felt like we
were constantly on the phone [with Smart Service] making sure we understood
everything, Spencer says. But he says that also revealed a positive. This is
one of the biggest advantages of Smart Service support was really, really
good. And the software itself is really reliable. In the first nine months of use
weve only had two downtimes of less than three hours each.
Mostly, its just been an adjustment away from paper-based idiosyncrasies.
The new process mirrors the old one in function, if not implementation.
When a call comes in, a dispatcher enters customer data and service call
information into the Smart Service program via desktop computer. When the
entry is complete, Smart Service offers two options: Send out one job at a time
to the field technicians iPad or send the whole days schedule at once.
Management opted for the whole days information to help technicians
plan their time and routes better. Theyre told to resync after each job in case
anythings been knocked out of or added to the job queue.

I was able to buy a second business based on the ability

to get every single email sent to me in real time so I
could make instant decisions notice lost business
opportunities, collect credit card payments on time
so no balls got dropped.
Scott Spencer

At the beginning of each day, a technician opens his first ticket on the
tablet via the iFleet module, which includes job details and a route map.
(Smart Service has GPS routing embedded in the program.) The technician
can access all information on each job, including Jim Dandys history on the
property, access points and other pertinent points.
Once on site and having finished the work, the technician completes the
invoice, including any notes and photos. Then the customer signs the work
order using their finger or a stylus on the touch screen to create an electronic
signature, which autosyncs with the office-based system. The technician may
accept payment or let the customer know they will be billed according to
prior arrangements.
At days end, administrative staff goes through all digital invoices.
Everything is proofread and those not already paid are mailed out as paper
invoices. The administrator hits a single button to post the days finished jobs,
which closes out those records in the master database.
SWITCHOVER BENEFITS
The software adoption has paid off in many ways, not the least of
which is a newfound confidence for Spencer based on the power of real-time
communication with the field.
Now I can have a less experienced plumber on a job site who can
use the iPads FaceTime function to call in to the office, literally show the
situation [through the onboard camera with video] and be talked through the
whole job [by a more experienced technician], Spencer says. They can also
take still photos of the job site and tag them to an invoice. This can protect us

from things such as being accused of, say, water damage or scratching a tub
when the damage was actually pre-existing.
If, for whatever reason, a technician must be pulled off a job before its
finished, a photo can be taken showing how far the work has progressed to
that point. This provides a good idea of whats left to be done for estimating
and scheduling purposes.
The switch to the tablet-based system has also had a positive effect back
at the office. Due to the elimination of redundant data entry, Spencer was able
to move a full-time person to a function hed long wanted to institute: timeresponsive quality-assurance follow-up calls.
Im not waiting a week now for the invoice to come in, but now doing
those calls within 24 hours, he says. We know when the guy has logged
off the job because the color [of that jobs entry] changes on screen. Were
actually trying to get it down to an hour after the service call so we can get
the best customer feedback.
As a management tool, Spencer says hes never had better in 25 years
of running businesses. Most managers never have direct contact with a
customer, he admits. Thats made through the technicians, so this system
also functions as an effective training tool. Records are turned in daily so
errors can be caught and addressed immediately.
Hes also noted a significant uptick in new business opportunities since
introducing Smart Service. I now capture a lot of bids right away, sent to me
direct from the field, which allows managers to follow up right away.
UNEXPECTED BENEFITS
So, was the switch worth all the expense and the hassle of forcing the
adjustment on himself and his entire staff? Absolutely, Spencer says.
The software was just over $1,500, and if I take into account all the
hardware and training time, the whole changeover probably cost a total of
about $25,000, he says. Put into perspective, thats probably a couple of
excavation jobs. The system probably paid for itself within the first couple
months in found opportunities to sell excavation jobs alone.
Hes now confident in making the last step toward taking advantage of
the power of the Smart Service program: linking into Jim Dandys GPS system
to tackle routing efficiencies.
This is accomplished through an add-on software module that can be
purchased separately, but was embedded in the comprehensive package he
originally bought. Hed known at purchase time hed want to move to using
it sooner rather than later, but didnt want to jump into GPS implementation
right off the bat.
You need to task someone with managing, monitoring and routing it.
Thats a significant investment in training and funding a new position. We
didnt want to bite it all off at one time. Hes pleased with his decision to let
his management and staff settle into a certain level of comfort with the whole
concept and operation of the digital system first.
He also appreciates a significant benefit he hadnt consciously anticipated
when first deciding to go paperless.
I was able to buy a second business based on the ability to get every
single email sent to me in real time so I could make instant decisions
notice lost business opportunities, collect credit card payments on time so
no balls got dropped. That was a strong factor in convincing the bankers that
giving me the loan to buy the second business was a good risk, even though
the two business facilities are in separate states.
Of course, every business is different, but Spencers story is a strong
case for all progressive contractors to consider what a move to a paperless
enterprise might mean for their futures. GOMC

Building the Business

chosen field. They believe what got them

there is enough. They become complacent.
They decide they dont need to put in more
effort and stop striving for success.
When you reach a goal, celebrate your
success but identify your next goal and
begin to take action. When you stop moving
forward and rest on your laurels, in actuality
you are falling behind all the others who
continue to move forward.

EDUCATION IS
CONTINUOUS
5 pillars to ensure you never stop learning
By Walt Grassl

any talented people feel that they

do not have anything new to
learn in their chosen field. They
believe what got them there is enough.
Those who are determined and who
work hard often spend a lot of time and effort to learn new skills and maintain their
existing ones. They display the most current knowledge of new technology and
ideas. Having employees who will improve
themselves over and above the companysponsored training is critical to an organization wanting to innovate and improve.

Time in service should be no guarantee of

advancement in a successful business. It is
what one learns with his or her experience
that determines the value of the service time.
In other words, if you put in your time, you are
guaranteed nothing.
Eleven years ago, Ben got a job working in the mailroom at a local business
during the summer before starting college.
The company had been in existence for
over 60 years and was currently being led
by Jack a longtime employee and company legend who started in the mailroom.
Three weeks into the job, on his way from
the basement to the top floor, the elevator
stopped and who should enter the elevator but Jack. He smiled at Ben, introduced
himself and mentioned that he started
out in the mailroom. Ben was a little star
struck, but as they both exited the elevator,
Ben asked if Jack had any advice for him.
Never stop educating yourself, Jack

said. In fact, come into my office and let

me elaborate. I have 15 minutes before my
next meeting.
Jack proceeded to share these five
pillars for continued education:
1. You are responsible for your education.
You alone are responsible for your
education. Whether or not it makes sense to
invest in a formal education, there are free
and for-fee learning opportunities available
to everyone. The public library and the
Internet are two examples.
Another invaluable source of education
is through people. Spend time with people
who can do things that you cant. It may
mean volunteering to stay late to observe
someone, going to lunch with more
experienced associates or finding a mentor.
2. No entitlements.
Time in service should be no guarantee
of advancement in a successful business. It
is what one learns with his or her experience that determines the value of the service
time. In other words, if you put in your time,
you are guaranteed nothing.
As your time with the company grows,
seek lateral transfers or increased responsibility without necessarily a corresponding
increase in title or pay. Realize you are making yourself more valuable to your employer
and view the stretch assignments as an
investment in yourself.
Although we are living in a time of an
increasing sense of entitlement, we must all
take care of ourselves.
3. You cant rest on your laurels.
Many talented people feel that they
do not have anything new to learn in their

4. Staying current.
Likewise, you need to stay current
with industry trends by reading industry
literature and blogs. If you are moving into
management, read leadership books and
blogs. New trends are frequently entering
the workplace. You have the choice to be
aware of and lead the change, try to catch
up or even worse resist the change.
Joining industry and trade associations
is another way to educate yourself on
current trends.
5. New and old generation.
A big issue in many industries is
getting several generations to work well
together. Each generation has different
learning and working styles. You have
several options to handle this reality. The
first is to do nothing, since its your fellow
employees responsibility to get with the
program. You can leave it to your companys
leadership to implement a program to fix the
problem. The higher percentage choice is to
educate yourself on the differences between
generations, the issues these differences
bring to the workplace and some things
others are doing to address them.
You can use this information to change
how you interact and the extent you can
help your company improve their processes.
Ben took Jacks advice to heart. After
graduating from college, he got a job with
another company in another field. His
education did not stop when he left school.
He subscribes to industry and management
blogs, has joined his industry association,
and seeks out challenging assignments
and develops relationships with other
successful employees at his company. He
has been identified by his management as
a high-potential employee and is one of the
youngest employees at his level. Bens future
is bright. Amazing what a chance encounter
in an elevator can do. GOMC

PROTECTING THE

GROUND
Advanced-Composite Mats offer a safer alternative to wood mats in oil and gas fields
By Cory Dellenbach

MAT SYSTEMS ARE A NECESSITY FOR MANY ASPECTS OF THE

oil and gas industry. They protect the environment from spills as well as
support heavy machinery in regions with challenging conditions.
Newpark Mats & Integrated Services (NMIS), developed its DURA-BASE
Advanced-Composite Mat System nearly 15 years ago to address these issues,
and the company continues to improve on its design year after year.
A unit of Newpark Resources, NMIS focuses on ground protection and
matting systems. NMIS has been in the mats business for more than 50 years,
originally starting out as a manufacturer of wood mats and later developing its
flagship product, the DURA-BASE Advanced-Composite Mat.

The main advantage that DURA-BASE has over wood mats

is their longevity. Some mats that we manufactured over
10 years ago still meet our rigorous durability requirements
and remain in our rental fleet today.
Megan Rabalais

Were headquartered in southern Louisiana, where the Gulf Coast

environment poses unique challenges, says Megan Rabalais, marketing
manager for Newpark. Years ago, when working with wood mats, we
faced numerous issues. For example, they would quickly deteriorate in wet
conditions, and we would turn inventory over rapidly.
Rabalais says that engineers within the company put their heads together
to come up with a solution that would be both longer lasting and more
cost-effective.
We strongly believed that there had to be a better way, a more efficient
and safer product, Rabalais adds. The solution was the DURA-BASE
Advanced-Composite Mat System.
DURA-BASE VS. WOOD
DURA-BASE mats are 8 by 14 feet, 4 inches thick and weigh 1,000
pounds, making them lighter than traditional three-ply wood mats. Rabalais

also notes that the composite material of DURA-BASE offers many advantages
over traditional wood mats.
The main advantage that DURA-BASE has over wood mats is their
longevity, Rabalais says. Some mats that we manufactured over 10 years
ago still meet our rigorous durability requirements and remain in our rental
fleet today.
The mats also offer a number of logistical benefits. Compared to wood
mats, which are never exactly the same size and weight, DURA-BASE mats
are precision engineered, ensuring customers get the same high quality with
each individual mat.
The mats are made out of a proprietary advanced-composite formulation
that is much lighter than wood alternatives, Rabalais says. This delivers
significant time and cost savings by reducing the required trucking. While

a truck can generally carry anywhere between 12 and 20 wood mats, 46

DURA-BASE mats can be transported in a single truckload.
The mats are designed with an extended lip that is offset by a foot in
each direction and overlap when they are laid down. Additionally, the system
has a patented twist-locking pin feature that can be engaged with only a
single 90-degree turn. This creates a continuous interlocking work surface
that eliminates shifting and gapping, thus enhancing worker safety. The
raised 1/8-inch tread pattern is designed to provide added traction to those
walking or driving on the mats, further enhancing safety.
DURA-BASE mats are easy to use and quick to assemble, and machinery
can move up to six mats at a time, quickening the installation pace. In some
instances, an entire sites worth of matting can be set in a single day, saving
precious time for operators.

You never know what environmental issues you may run

into or how the terrain may change while youre out there.
Megan Rabalais

IN THE FIELD
DURA-BASE mats are versatile and are regularly used in the oil and gas
industry on both the drilling side and the completion side, providing a safe,
stable work platform for oil and gas operations.
You never know what environmental issues you may run into or how
the terrain may change while youre out there, Rabalais says. You may have
a nice, clean site to start, but when weather becomes a factor, your site can
quickly become inaccessible or unworkable.
Parts of the Gulf Coast consist of really difficult terrain. For some jobs, it
may be necessary to navigate miles of marsh or swampland in order to access
drilling areas, she adds. In these areas, the mats can be deployed to lay a
temporary roadway and build a solid work surface for the drilling to actually
take place.
In other regions where potentially hazardous spills might pose a risk to
nearby streams and other sensitive areas, the matting system is used to protect
spill containment liner systems, preventing them from puncture. This reduces
the risk of any hazardous materials leaving the site.
DURA-BASE mats are used worldwide. In North America specifically,
they have a large presence in the Marcellus and Utica shale plays, along the
Gulf Coast and also in the oilsands of western Canada.

completed quickly and they come out on the other end ready to be redeployed,
Rabalais says. The system cuts down on personnel time working with a
power washer, saving water overall. Water runoff, which can then lead to
other contamination issues, is also greatly reduced.
The mats are 100 percent recyclable, and the company offers an active
recycling program. This makes the mats significantly more eco-friendly
when compared with wood mats, which require the consumption of trees
for production.
COST SAVINGS
DURA-BASE mats also offer additional cost-saving benefits. Before
laying wood mats down, many operators must bring in aggregate sand or
rocks to build up a stable base for the site. The expenses associated with
the aggregate and related trucking, manpower and remediation costs add up,
Rabalais says. DURA-BASE mats provide such a stable surface that they can
cut down on aggregate by as much as two-thirds.
Because Newpark delivers, installs, cleans and removes the mats from a
given site, companies dont have to manage their own mat inventories.
The company is also continuing to improve the DURA-BASE system,
working with a focus on innovation.
Were undergoing a major construction project here at our manufacturing
plant in south Louisiana and are adding to our production and R&D
capabilities, Rabalais says. The market demand has been so robust that
were adding additional capacity and capabilities. Were very excited about
the future. GOMC

ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
In addition to cost- and time-saving benefits, the DURA-BASE AdvancedComposite Mat System also offers plenty of compelling environmental
benefits. For example, the mats do not absorb foreign materials. The mats are
nonporous and clean easily, which dramatically limits the transfer of invasive
spores that can contaminate local vegetation. In addition, the mats will not
soak up potentially hazardous chemicals that may leak onto a rig pad, limiting
risk of cross-contamination between work sites.
Easy cleanup of the mats is enhanced by a unique cleaning system offered
by NMIS the T-REX Mat Cleaning System. This cleaning system improves
water management by recycling water. The DURA-BASE mats are simply
loaded directly into the T-REX and are quickly moved through the machine for
a full cleaning much like a car wash.
The mats go through and all the water is contained. Cleaning is

This year, the agency hopes to involve more than 3

person from as high as 1,640 feet,
or two people from 656 feet. It
can hold up to two people at a
time, he adds. It was originally
designed as an emergency descent
device. If there are two of us on
an oil derrick and we dont have
four or five minutes to get out, we
could hook up to each other and
ride the SafEscape system down
together as long as our combined
weight does not exceed 550
pounds. Alternatively, they could hook
up individually because as one end of the
lifeline is lowered, the other end ascends
and is immediately ready for another
worker to hook up.
Both devices are simple to use and
require only about 15 minutes of training.
The first time they might be a little scared
to be lowered down, says Cangemi.
Once you trust the system, its a real nice,

SafEscape also comes with a bracket

for ladder rescues. Maybe someone gets
hit by a dropped tool or suffers from heat
exhaustion, or they simply slip and hit
their head while ascending the ladder on
the derrick. Now theyre hanging from
their fall protection system, says Cangemi.
A second worker can quickly climb up or
down to them, attach the ladder bracket
and hook the person to the SafEscape and
lower them to the ground.

the system to the suspended worker

on the working surface. All rescue
components are contained in one
easy-to-store kit with no assembly

The premium QuickPick kit
includes a backup braking system,

product marketing manager. In
case of accidental release of rope

space situations if necessary. For
contractors working on customer equipment, the devices can be carried up
at the beginning of the project so they can be quickly accessed if needed.
Companies also store them near areas they may be used, such as cranes,
wind turbines, oil derricks, towers, rooftops and scaffolding. Some wind
generator companies place a SafEscape system in every nacelle that houses
the generating equipment. Were going up to 400 feet in the air with those,
says John Eckel, senior technical training specialist.

Case Studies

Compressors and Power

Generation, Mobile Services
By Craig Mandli
SYSTEM TRANSFORMS SOUR FIELD GAS INTO ENERGY SURPLUS
Problem
In a field application in a remote part of west Texas, an operator had limited access to electric grid
power, which curtailed expansion plans and presented challenges in maintaining production from
existing wells. They needed a temporary power solution, but fuel options including diesel, LPG, LNG
and CNG were considered uneconomic. Field gas was readily available, although it was in the form of
wet sour gas containing greater than 300 ppm of H2S. A permanent solution to cleaning this gas was
also considered cost prohibitive, and with a utility upgrade still six months away, the operator needed
an alternative.

Solution
The operator consulted with Aggreko technical specialists, who worked with the operators field
operations team to engineer a strategy to scrub the toxic sour gas out of the stranded field gas supply and turn it into a viable fuel source to power a temporary
natural gas generation station. The solution was able to reduce the H2S levels in the supply gas to 0 ppm by passing through a tower equipped with SulfaBate
pelletized H2S scavenger, and included multiple gas-liquid separators to reduce the liquids content prior to introducing it to the generators, and a temporary flare
to purge test gas. The dry, desoured gas then entered 2 x 1 MW natural gas generators, which provided parallel and base load with the utility grid at 12.4 kV.

Result
This solution was able to power a fully operational well site in less than one week after startup and generated a greater than 10-to-1 payback. With the additional
electricity supply, eight wells were able to convert from rod pump to electrical submersible pump as the lift method. This conversion increased the operational
capacity of the field crew, who immediately began drilling new wells to continue toward the goal of 100 percent operation of available production. 877/798-5579;

SOLAR-POWERED LEAK DETECTION

SYSTEM INSTALLED AT GOLD MINE
Problem
A gold mine operator needed a leak detection system at a tailings pond in a high U.S. desert
environment at approximately 5,000 to 6,000 feet above sea level. The gold mine operator needed to
monitor a 6,000-foot-long, 8-inch-diameter plastic pipe that ran from the main mine processing area
to a tailings pond alongside the access road and buried at the entrance to the causeway. At the bottom
of the causeway was a large gasoline-powered pump on wheels with a suction line into the tailings
pond. There was no direct visibility from the main processing area if the plastic pipe ruptured. After
the pump was manually started, it had to be monitored at the pump location. There was no power
available along the pipe route to the pond except at the main processing end.

Solution
PCE Pacific Inc. and SunWize Power & Battery partnered to provide a solution. A complete solar-powered leak detection system using three DP sensors and a
radio based I/O SCADA system powered by two SunWize power stations was installed.

Result
The placement of three sensors allowed the entire pipe to be monitored for pump output and sectionalized quickly for any rupture or leak problems. The solar
array and battery is mounted on the same antenna support structure that supports the NEMA-4 radio enclosure housing the radio equipment. 303/604-1125;

Product Spotlight
High-volume drill fluid mixing, cleaning
system made for quick setup, takedown
By Ed Wodalski
The D.O.T. trailer-mounted MCT-1000 HVU Sandman drill fluid
mixing and cleaning system from Mud Technology International is
designed for smaller mobile drilling operations (4,000- to 8,000-foot
wells). The unit sets up in one day and processes 1,000 gpm.
Weve taken the big mud recycling mixing systems and reduced
them down to a more compact, easier to haul and manage system, says
John Miller, CEO for Mud Technology International. We match it so all
components complement each other and produce what we call a closedloop system. One hundred percent of the fluids and solids are processed
through the mud system, eliminating the need for a reserve kit.
The filtering system is mounted on a rock-over design trailer (about
50 feet long, 10 feet wide and less than 13 feet 6 inches tall when hauling).
It has a three-section tank (about 375 barrels) with clean-outs on the
shaker discharge side and 1-inch bar grating covering open areas on top.
All plumbing is hard piped. Hydraulic landing legs help ease loading and
unloading.
Once this unit is washed down and ready to move, you raise the
trailer and back the truck underneath, Miller says. Lower the trailer onto
the truck, plug in your air lines, plug in your lights and youre ready to roll.
You dont have to disassemble all the components to move to the next job
or reassemble when you get there.
The complementary drill rig unit connects to the sites main power
system and includes a 110-volt step-down transformer mounted to the

1.

unit. Collapsible work

lights assist with night
operation. Mixing features include a highshear/low-pressure hopper, replaceable venturi,
submersed jet guns for
maximum shear, independent on/off controls
for each gun jet and optional mud agitators.
Four pump packages pressure feed fluid
to the de-silter cones, the
de-sander cones, the mud hopper and the triplex.
The unit has two MTLS-3P high G-force shakers, one MTLS-3P shaker under the de-sander cones and one MTLS-3P shaker under the de-silter
cones. Other features include an 8-inch drilling mud inlet, pre-tensioned
panel shaker screens, 100 square feet of screening area and cement bypass

WITTE AIRSLIDE INLET TRAY

The airslide inlet tray from The Witte Co. is designed to prevent sludge from
clogging fluid bed dryers. Installed within the infeed section where material
enters the drying system, the tray directs the heated airstream through a series of
openings in the steel plate that face downstream and parallel to the infeed deck.
Incoming material immediately begins drying and advances to the primary drying
zone, reducing the potential for sticky material to block the infeed. 908/689-6500;
