My Dear People:
The older we get and the more busy we are,
the more time flies so fast that sometimes the
most important things in life get away from
us. Compared to working for heaven and
that eternal union with our loving Savior, the
rest is trivia, petty, and just isn’t important.
Yet how we fool ourselves and put God off at
times, or we slip Him in on Sundays and with
short prayers during the day as some sort of
obligation rather than the greatest investment
of our life.
Lent is the time of the year when, the Church
gives us heavy reminders to get serious
about our eternal destiny. With Lent being
ten days away, we need to plan now for
some wise spending of our time during this
holy season. We need time to readjust our
minds and hearts in the direction of God.
Think now of the possibility of daily Mass.
Here at OLS we have three daily Masses
during Lent. Some of our 7:30 a.m. Mass
people prepared for Mass better by waiting
till 12:00 noon (ahem!). Stations are every
Friday at 7:00 p.m. and there is the Lenten
retreat by Deacon Glenn Harmon on
March 1 through 4.
This is also the time of the year when parents
take seriously their obligations to train their
children in the faith with the sacramental
preparation for Penance, Communion and
Confirmation.
The first right and obligation to education in
the faith belongs to the parents. You
delegate much of that right to the catechists;
but most education in spiritual values actually
comes from the parents. If the parents value
the sacraments, the children will value the
sacraments. Parent involvement and
example is essential for the children’s faith.
It is easy to underestimate what children
learn and their ability to listen. Sometimes,
at the children’s liturgies, I wonder if I am
being heard or listened to by the primary
grades.

Several weeks ago, Bishop Foley gave a
dynamic homily when he celebrated the
Mass. In the process, he added a personal
note that, as the bishop of the diocese, he
confronted so many decisions, conflicts and
job frustrations. He survived well, but now
that he is retired, he enjoys going around
offering Mass in different places, hearing
confessions, giving talks to groups without
the worries of running the whole diocese.
Deanna Walker’s third-grade son came home
to his mother after Mass and told her that he
the third-grader did not want to be a bishop.
He wanted to be a “retired bishop.” Early
childhood is very impressionable and we
tend to forget it. Children- yes, even in their
teenage years, at their stage of the
“declaration of independence”- secretly will
admit that their parents have more influence
on them than anyone else.
Parents, please encourage your children with
the sacramental preparation and reception
by word and example.
Money has spiritual overtones and
undertones which means that the more
spiritual a parish is the more generous are
the people to the parish. The five percent to
the parish is the norm set by the American
bishops, and I must express my gratitude to
the people who have turned in their tithing
cards. No pastor should lose sleep because
he can’t pay the bills. I’m sleeping at night
and grateful to you for your generosity.
So many have been able to be helped at the
front door during these recessionary times of
high unemployment because of your
generosity. God is never outdone in
generosity. With 1200 parishioners, 850
turned in cards; 350 did not. Many of the
350 are in hard times financially and many
might have other reasons; but to the 850 I
pray that God will bless you most abundantly.

Let your light shine and give God praise! Hiding your
light doesn’t serve anyone. Where will you choose to
“glow”? (Matthew 5:13-16) For Church and world
leaders, may they be lights to shine forth the
goodness of God.
Congress continues to debate health care
reform. While the House passed a health care
bill that prevents the federal government from
funding elective abortions, the Senate rejected
this and passed a bill that requires federal funds
to help subsidize and promote health plans that
cover abortions. These two bills must now be
combined into one bill that both the House and
Senate will vote on in final form. The U.S.
bishops continue to strongly oppose abortion
funding, while calling for critical improvements in
affordability for the poor and vulnerable, and
access to health care for immigrants.

The annual back-to-school PSR Family
Supper will be held on Wednesday, February

Knights of Columbus will, once again, graciously

Eucharistic Benediction in the Church at 7 p.m.

The Mass schedule for Ash Wednesday,
February 17, is as follows:
6:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 12:00 noon, and 6:00 p.m.
The two masses at 6:00 p.m. will be held in the
church and the Parish Hall. Noon Masses will be
held on Thursday, February 18, through
Wednesday, March 31. We will not have Noon
Mass on Tuesday, March 30, due to the Chrism
Mass.
