SD gateway (sustainable development gateway)

The SD Gateway integrates the online information developed by members of the "Sustainable
Development Communications Network" which is a group of non-governmental organisations that
aim to find ways of using the Internet to meet the goals of sustainable development. The Gateway
provides access to over 1,200 documents through its SD TOpics section and has organised these
links into 6 main sections; regions, managing sustainability, environment, danger signs,
communities and societies, and business and trade. In addition, the site hosts a collection of
directories which include, a job bank, news services, listings of mailing lists and a calendar of SD
events. The site can be browsed alphabetically or by concept and can also be searched by
keyword. The SD Gateway is supported by the International Development Research Centre
(IDRC), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the International Institute for
Sustainable Development (IISD). The site is also available in French and Spanish.

Eldis : Gateway to Development Information

Eldis is a gateway to development information on the Internet. Eldis can be searched by keyword
and searches can be limited to organisations or documents. It is also possible to browse Eldis by
subject area by means of subject guides. The site provides access to Country profiles which
provide information on sectors such as trade, gender, food security and agriculture. An email
updating service is available and allows you to select subject areas and receive email notification
when information on that topic becomes available on Eldis. A newsfeed is also available to add to
your Web site. Eldis is funded by the Danish International Development Agency (Danida) and
SIDA, and hosted by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS). The site is also available in
Spanish.

European Union and offers information about evaluation in the context of rural development. "It is
aimed at national and regional authorities in charge of programming and evaluation of rural

Agriculture, environment, rural development : facts and figures

This report was published on the European Commission's Web site in July 1999 and is the result
of a collaboration between three services of the European Commission, namely EUROSTAT, the
Agriculture Directorate-General, and the Environment Directorate-General. This document aims
to examine the relationship between farming and the environment, focusing on "pressure
indicators" designed to measure the impact of agricultural activity on such matters as water
quality, climate change or soil acidification. The report covers the whole spectrum of agricultural
activity and its environmental impact, and chapter headings include the concentration of livestock
production, organic farming, impact of agri-environment measures, nitrogen in agriculture, rural
realities in the European Union, and agriculture and climate change. Abstracts of each chapter
are provided and a glossary of terms is available. This document can be viewed in English,

Arkleton Centre for Rural Development Research

The Arkleton Centre for Rural Development Research was established in 1995 to "research the
issues of rural change and development in Europe, including developments in rural policy and
practice." The Arkleton Centre is a collaboration between the Arkleton Trust and the Faculty of
Social Sciences & Law at Aberdeen University. This site provides information about the Centre,
its aims and activities. Details of the past and present research interests of the Centre are
available as are details of other research activities by Centre members. A selection of Centre
publications are outlined on the site and some can be viewed free of charge online. Information

This site provides information on a range of sustainable development issues. Five E's Unlimited is a
U.S. consulting business that specialises in sustainable development information and is owned by
Dr Warren Flint, an ecologist with more than 25 years experience in environmental science and
natural resources research, management, teaching and community outreach. Information on the site

covers a range of sustainability issues, including sustainable agriculture, restoration ecology, rural
development, smart watershed development, and adaptive coastal resources management.

European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI)
The European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) was established in
1975, and is an independent, non-profit making international non-governmental organisation. EADI works
to "promote development research and training activities in economic, social, cultural, technological,
institutional and environmental areas". This site provides information on EADI, its members, aims and
activities. It is possible to search all EADI members Web sites by keyword, and EADI publications can be
browsed. Details of EADI publications is provided and the annual report can be viewed online in English
and French. EADI members have collaborated in the European Libraries Network for Development
(ELAND) and a link to the Network is provided on this site.
