Solution:
a) Cement pointing 1:4 -unit 1 sq.m.- take 100 sq. m.
Pointing in block work total dry volume of material = 0.64m3 for 100 m2

For 1:4 cement mortar:

Cement : 0.64/(1+4)= 0.128 m3 = 0.128/0.0347 = 3.68 bag say 4

Note: cement density = 1440kg/m3, ie one 50kg bag = 0.0347m3

Sand : 4 x 0.128m3 = 0.512 m3
