( A Study on Stress Level Among Part-time Students in a Higher Institution in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia)
Based on the article writing by Rafidah, Azizah& Noraini,2009; Kumar & jejurkar,2005,
they said most of people have their stress and mostly those to have multifunction roles such
as in their families, workplaces, about their self-efficacy and others. Stress quite problem in
workplaces especially for those who plays multiple roles and is a cost to organization
(NIOSH, 1999).Nowadays, todays workplaces , the nature of work is shifting rapidly and
stress is a risk to employees health. In this journal, those writers studying about the stress
level among working students and its relationship and influence to their psychological wellbeing status.
Cohen, Kamarck, & mermelstein (1983) defined stress as a process in which
environment demands strain an organisms adaptive capacity, resulting in both psycological
and physical response of the body whenever someone must adapt to the changing condition.
From a several review about stress, they discover that working students face more stress
more than those not working. It shows when the study of Ross, Neibling and Heckert (1999),
75% of their respondents described that working was a source of stress as working students
have add their student role to a current role structure and being affected by the stresses and
strain from family and work role expectations. So, sometimes, they not working because they
enjoy to works but they doing their hard for the expectations. It will became stress to them
because they always think about how people will look at them while working. Mostly part-time
students are highly motivated and full of enthusiasm to overcome whatever obstacles that
would be coming along the way pursuing the program, nevertheless, their ability to deal with
multiple finctions roles, have eventually put the undesired burden on them. But in same time,
these part-time students also face with stress because if they can handle their works while
studying, they cant have achivement in their studies.
Other than that, family stress can have some of the factors. Such as conflict of ideas
or relationships with spouse, children, siblings, parents and others. And these factors can be
caused by the ill-health of a family member, financial problems, a divorce, or the death of a

dear one. Based on Home, 1998, this impact of stress within families can be connected to
significant stressors or may about as the result of seemingly insignificant, normal,
developmental changes. Stress can thus affect the family if left unchecked. And in this study,
the writer said that the selection of family stress are money constraints, conflict with spouse,
burden with household work, having sexual frustration, not enough time spent with family
members, personal health problem, family member health problems, difficulty due to no
babysitter or housemaid, unfriendly and disgusting neighborhood and having too much debts
and bills to pay (Holmes and Rahe, 1967). Also self-efficacy also may caused of stress. It can
be shown by Moeini at al.,2008 said that a person with high self-efficacy may engage in more
healthy related activities when an illness occurs, whereas a person with low self efficacy
would harbour feelings of hopelessness. Mostly these cases with have by the students.
Because by having self-efficacy, they will make some achivement or failure in their studies.
Other than that, about psychological well-being. Based on Venes & Thomas, 2001,
they said that psychological stress refers to the emotional and psysiological reactions
experienced when an individual confronts a situation in which the demands go beyond their
coping resources. These situations can be seen when the symptoms such as feeling of
personality breakdown, fear, worry attacks, unfocussed attention or diversion, overstated
emotional responses and psychological upset such as depression, confusion and burnout
(Segerstrom & Miller, 2004).
So, based on the discussion and the study result, it was found that family stress plays
a vital role in contributing to psychological well-being. I can said that, family stress can be the
main factor to the others factors, because someone can have a lot of stress at out when he
or she have stress in the family even a small matter in familys problems. Even self-afficacy
matter can be the highest causes of individuals stress. Since the higher work stress is
usually paid off with higher salary income or many other rewards, it has been concluded that
it does not directly impact to the psychological well-being of the part-time students.
Based on this journal, I found that we must have stress management and we must
know about the factors of the stress. For example, as a teacher, we will face a lot of
problems in this career such as with the students, parents and also the collegue. Stress to
students because their attitudes and also in their studies. But mostly, the teachers will face a
big problems when talking about students attitude in school. But as a professional person in
this career, the teacher must know how to handle the problems and the teachers stress too.
Based on my knowledge, we can handle the stress by doing some sports or some activities
either outdoor sport or indoor sports. It will release your tension other can make your body
come health. Other than that, we can get some caunselor if we can hold that stress alone.

So, you can have the caunselor to tell the problems and to have some advisors about the
problems. It is because, nowadays we can see that the career that have the highest level of
having stress is teacher. Teachers just not only to teaching but they must create the students
become somebody for the future.
From my experience, I am also having stress and pressure while working and
sometimes I have some problems in my family. But most important when I have familys
problems it will be the main stress and automatically everything I do will come stress to me.
So, to reduce the stress, I need to solve from the familys problems such as about my
management in my family and my relationship to the family. After that, I can handle my
psychological stress, means it I can think wisely how to solve the matters and how to react to
the problems. It became easy if we can think calmly and how hard it is, we still try to solve it.
Also , I can have my self-efficacy in any situation because as a teacher I need to have my
self-efficacy so that my student will trust what I will teach them. The students also looking for
the teacher that can teach them very well not just told them what to do but told them the real
things.
This article give me some advantages such as I know about the stress. Stress can be
defined in a few perspective and what can I understand is stress also known as pressure can
be good or bad to somebody. But mostly it will become bad to somebody because it will
effect to some side such as in work, study, family , relationship and others. If it became good
is, when I have pressure, I need to have some exercises to release the tension and in the
same time I will have some healthy to my body and also when I stress about work while
thinking about others achievement, I will try my best to have my achievement too. This article
also show me why self-efficacy is important to somebody because based on Bandura,2004,
said that those of have high self-efficacy expect to realize favourable outcomes, and
conversely, those with low self-efficacy expect their efforts to result in poor outcomes. But in
this article, it does not show and tell me about how to handle the problems very well. It just
discuss about which type of stress have the highest level but it still give me the hint about the
stress management especially the type of stress that is familys stress have the highest level
for the stress.
As a conclusion, this article give me some knowledge about the stress and I also can
learn how to handle the stress. It may not tell me directly how to handle the stress but it helps
me detect the main causes for the stress. The article also help me to be a good teacher
because a good teacher is somebody that can handle their stress and emotion before they
face the students and teaching them.
