Integratesrelevantenvironmentalconsiderationsbusinesswide
ShahAlam,8December2011:DiGiTelecommunicationsSdnBhd's(DiGi)hasstrengtheneditscommitmenttogreenitsbusinesswiththelaunchofits
TechnologyOperationsCentre(TOC),thefirstgreendatacentreinMalaysiawiththeProvisionalGoldCertificationfromtheGreenBuildingIndex(GBI),
Malaysia'sgreenratingtoolforbuildings.
Thepurposebuiltdatacenterof3storeywith60,000squarefeetofusablespacefordataserversandtelecommunicationsswitchesalsohousesthe
Company'sFastRecoveryCenterandofficespaces.WithaninvestmentofmorethanRM80million,theTOCisbuilttosupportDiGi'sgrowingdatacapacity
needsforthenext1015years.ItwasdesignedusingtheGBIasitsguidingprinciplesandincorporatescuttingedgeGreenTechnologiesaimedatreducing
usageandincreasingenergyefficiency.
DiGi'sChiefTechnologyOfficer,OleMartinGunhildsbuexplained,"Integratingenvironmentallyfriendlyfeaturesintothebusinesshastoberelevantand
addressesthebusinessneed.BeyondgoodCorporateResponsibility,wehavefoundthatembeddingsustainablepractisesbusinesswidemakespractical
businesssense.Ournewdatacenter(TOC)beartestimonytohowwecanbenefitfrombothachievingoperationalefficiencieswhilstreducingourcarbon
footprint."

companiestoprovideuninterruptednetworkcoveragetosubscribers.Asdemandincreases,wehavearoletoplayindrivingchangeinthewayweoperate."
ConstructionoftheTOCbeganin2009,withenvironmentalconsiderationstakenintoeverydevelopmentphase.TheTOCisdesignedtobeenergyefficient,and
isexpectedtocutdownaveragetraditionalenergyconsumptionby30%whentheloadatthedatacentreexceeds2,500squarefeetin2012.
Thebuildingdesignincorporatesenvironmentalfriendlyfeaturessuchasnoraisedfloors,dedicatedcoolingforserverrackstomaximizecoolingefficiencies,
rainwaterharvesting,solarreflectiveroofpaintcoating,andasteelformworksystemtoreducetimberusage.Itsmostvisuallynotablefeatureisitsvertical
vegetatedwallthatactsasaneffectivebarrieragainstsolarradiationandinsulatesthebuilding,thussignificantlyreducingheatbuildupandcoolingenergy
costs.

startedbuildingtheTOC,weworkedcloselywithGBItoidentifyanddevelopMalaysia'sbenchmarkfordatacentersastherewerenoexistingcriteriaforthe
datacentrecategorybefore."
