Last week was a hectic week. I have been touring East Java and Bali. There were so many
things that Ive experienced that its difficult to write about all of them.
I arrived in Yogyakarta on Sunday. I stayed in a cheap accommodation, a Wisma. The
room was clean and I could get hot water to bathe. On Monday, I went with a tour group to
visit Borobudur and the Hindu temples in Prambanan. Some of these temples are more than
twelve hundred years old. They date well beyond the churches in my hometown in Europe;
I was so amazed at the enormity of the construction. Im sure they did not have the heavy
machines we have today to raise and lay those huge blocks of stone. The carvings on the walls
were another feature of the construction.
Im getting used to the spicy food served here. I have eaten fresh fish, lamb and beef. I
know you dont eat all this but Ive got used to it. On Tuesday I decided to go for a hike to
Mount Merapi. But I found out that it was a difficult climb. So, I went to the forest park in
Kaliurang. That was a lovely walk that made me hot and tired. But I managed to cool off in a
waterfall in the park then walked up to a hill nearby where I could see the smoky, fiery Mount
Merapi.

TEXT 5 is for questions 11 13.
BIRD CAMOUFLAGE
Many birds are brown, green or grey. These colors make a bird harder to see; they
camouflage the bird. Brown is the most common color. Brown birds include sparrows, emus,
thrushes, larks, eagles, falcon and the female birds of many species such as wrens, ducks,
blackbirds and peacocks. When a brown bird is in long grass or among tree trunks or rocks, it
is camouflaged. Birds that live in long grass often have brown feathers streaked with black
which looks like shadows. A bittern is almost invisible in long reeds. Other birds, including
starling and minahs, are quite dark in color, but are flecked with little spots that look like
raindrops on leaves.
Many birds from hot countries are green or have some green feathers, particularly
parrots. Birds that live in green trees often have green backs, even if they have bright-colored
breasts. From the back, the birds are camouflaged. This is very useful when sitting on a nest.
The birds bright-colored breast is hidden. Grey birds include most pigeons and doves,
cranes, storks and herons. Grey birds are often rock-living birds like pigeons, or birds that sit
on dead tree trunks looking like a broken branch. Water birds like herons often have a pale
grey color which makes it harder for a fish to notice that the bird is standing, looking down for
something to catch. Water birds, no matter what color they are on top, are often white
underneath, so that when a fish looks up, the bird looks like part of the sky.
Black birds include crows, ravens and male blackbirds. Some birds that are dark colors
spend quite a lot of time on the ground, hopping around in the shadows under bushes. Among
these birds are the male blackbirds and the Satin Bowe bird which is not black but dark blue.
Crows and ravens often perch high on bare trees in the winter, where their black shape against
the sky looks like the dark bare branches.

B. How green feathers camouflage the birds.
C. How green feathered birds reproduce.
D. Where grey birds live.

B. the birds sit on dead tree trunks looking like a broken branch
C. the dark color camouflages the birds on the ground
D. the feather makes the birds looks like a shadow
E. the water birds look like part of the sky

What is cancer? It is actually a group of more than one hundred separate diseases. Most
of us are fear from cancer. It is reasonable because next to heart disease, cancer is the second
leading cause of death.
Cancer cells come from normal cells because of mutations of DNA. Those mutations
can occur spontaneously. The mutations may be also induced by other factors such as:
nuclear and electromagnetic radiation, viruses, bacteria and fungi, parasites, heat, chemical in
the air, water and food, mechanical cell-level injury, free radicals, evolution and ageing of
DNA, etc. All such factors can produce mutations that may start cancer.
Cancer cells are formed continuously in the organism. It is estimated that there are
about 10,000 cancer cells at any given time in a healthy person. Why do some result in
microscopic- level cancers and some do not? First, not all damaged cells can multiply and
many of them die quickly. Second, those which potentially divide and form cancer are
effectively destroyed by the mechanism available to the immune system. Therefore cancer
develops if the immune system is not working properly or the amount of cells produced is too
great for the immune system to eliminate.
