Degree in Business Administration

accomplishment with the help of a
dedicated team of Assistive
Technologies Specialists. Mario
has been on several newscasts for

Connecticut 30, and WFSB

THE IMPACT OF HAVING A LIVE-IN AIDE AND


HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS
Our Live-ins are well trained,
intuitive, caring, and experienced. We
want to explain how they can make a
difference to hospitals and a clients
quality of life. Recent trends in health
care have caused hospitals to be very
concerned about their readmission
rates because they can be penalized if
certain patients are readmitted within
30 days of being discharged. The
national average for patients 65 years
and older that are discharged from a
hospital and readmitted within 30 days
for all causes is approximately 18%.
We studied the number of Live-in
clients for the past 3 years that were
recently discharged from a hospital or
had our services and were hospitalized
(189 clients) and found that the
average all cause readmission rate
within 30 days is much less at 13%.
What is especially striking is that our
clients average age and acuity of
illness is higher than what the national
average is based upon given the fact
they need Live-in Services to begin
with.

Why? This is likely due


to
our
Live-ins
promoting:
medication
compliance,
good
nutrition, safety, and good
hygiene and clean living
en v i ro n men t
(w hich
reduces the risk of
infection).
They assist
with ambulation and
reduce the risk of falls.
Although our Live-in
Caregivers are nonmedical they are excellent
at recognizing and
reporting changes in their
clients to health care
providers and family
caregivers.
All these
things do make a
difference.

We are very proud of
this accomplishment.

Mario has worked with the New England
Assistive Technology Center (NEAT) to
open a new showroom for our
technologies in their facility in
Hartford. One of his best achievements is
the work he has done with the
Connecticut Department of
Developmental Services to help safely
transition individuals in their programs into
community based settings improving
quality of life for those individuals with
various disabilities and saving the State
significant dollars.

Automated Medication Dispensers
Studies by the CDC show that patients who are adherent to their
medications have more favorable health outcomes, such as reduced
mortality, and use fewer healthcare services (such as reduced hospital
readmission and ED visits). Depending on the number of medications
prescribed daily compliance can range from as poor as 50% to a not so
good 80%.
We are very pleased to report that we have many Automated
Medication Dispensers with clients across Connecticut and the average
medication compliance rate for March 2015 is an astounding 96%!

ENERGY BOOSTER
When our bodies become fatigued
we often look for quick fixes
so we can continue with our
busy day. Here are some
healthy ways to energize your
body and feel good as you
care for your client/loved one.
Avoid quick fix snacks. As you
become tired your body craves
carbohydrates and foods high in
glucose or sodium. Sugary snacks
or crackers or chips taste good but
are quick, short-term energy fixes.
Also these foods can lead to
unwanted weight gain. Instead eat
an apple, orange, banana or a
handful of nuts to satisfy your
hunger and provide energy in a
healthy way.
A large calorie meal makes you feel
sleepy and sluggish. Try eating
several small meals daily which
contain protein. Protein provides
and sustains energy for a longer
time. Consider enjoying:
 Low fat peanut butter on celery
and apples
 Scrambled egg whites served with
a side dish of fresh fruit and whole
wheat toast.

 Tuna

salad with lettuce and


tomato on whole wheat
bread or pita
 A cup or smoothie of
yogurt mixed with fruit
(blueberries
or
strawberries.)

Take a nap. If it is possible to


rest during the day when your
client/loved one is resting, a
short nap is healthy. Washing
your face with cool water can
be refreshing and revitalizing
to feel better and take on your
next task.
A brisk walk for 30 minutes
will bring fresh oxygenated
blood to your muscles and
organs and boost your
metabolism and lift your
spirits.
When a family
member visits or takes your
client/loved one out, get out
yourself for a healthy walk.
Water is essential to your
bodys well being. Drinking
water throughout the day
protects
you
from
dehydration.
Even mild
dehydration can cause you to
feel weary and tired.
