Redundancy of SWUs
LANUs are replicated with load sharing
In case there is a malfunction in the SWU or in the LANU, the pair
SWU/LANU takes over and provides connectivity towards the multilayer
switches.

SWUs are managed by the active MCHU

Within each group, SWUs are interconnected with an Ethernet interface
With two active Ethernet interfaces, the MCHU can manage all SWUs.

at the switches
These VLANs are bound to the unit types of the SGSN

Alternative LAN connectivity Redundant L3 connectivity

for SGSN (1/2)
L3 Connectivity means that multilayer functionality from Multilayer Site

Switch is transferred to SGSNs L3 ESB (MSTP root, virtual gateway and

routing)
SGSN can be connected to Site Router instead of Multilayer Site Switch
In redundant L3 solution, all SGSNs have MSTP region of its own thus
Multilayer Site Switches and SGSNs are not controlled by the same
spanning tree.

Either static or dynamic

routing (OSPF, RIP) is

used between backbone
routers and ESB24 SWUs.
ESB24 SWU pair form a
redundant VRRP pair.
L3 loop cabling for VRRP
will be connected via
backplane in native SG7
NE. These cables are
present but not connected
by default.
Connectivity is activated
by configuring IP

Redundancy of interfaces in computer units

LAN redundancy is further enhanced with the use of active and standby LAN
interfaces and carrier-sense IP addresses.
Each DX200 SGSN computer unit has two functionally independent LAN
interfaces.
When the CPU selects the LAN interface to be used, it also selects the SWU
to be used

Redundancy of multilayer switches

Multilayer switch 1

Site switches must be

interconnected physically by a
redundant trunk link (802.1Q)
for transporting multiple VLANs
over a single physical interface

VRRP

Switch

Link capacity can be increased

by grouping multiple physical
interfaces to one logical
interface (i.e. EtherChannel)
EtherChannel
Site switches support IP
redundancy features, such as
VRRP or HSRP

CPU

Redundancy of integrated L2 switches

Multilayer switch 1

CPU cannot detect interface

changeover if the link between
the SWU and the site switch
fails
each SWU is connected to
both of the multilayer site
switches for redundancy
duplicated connection creates
an L2 loop between the SWU
and the multilayer site switch
use of MSTP breaks the loops
by disabling loop causing
interfaces.
MSTP provides fast failure
recovery by enabling
previously disabled ports if
needed during topology
changes
