Abstract
The purpose of this research is to identify the average starting income of
graduates from the College of Fine Arts and Design from UST and the factors that might
affect the starting salary of the graduates. The researches employed the use of surveys
in order to obtain a statistical output in regards to the output of the survey from the
respondents. These respondents only included graduates in batch 2013 and 2014 due
to time constraints and limitations. The researchers found out that out of the 95
respondents who answered the survey, 74.74% of these respondents stated that the
accepted average salary of their profession should be in between 15000 pesos to
50000 pesos. Moreover the researchers found out that out of 96 respondents, 79.17%
answered that their profession is complementary to the course they have taken up in
college, and the remaining 20.83% who answered otherwise responded that the job
that they have taken was not related to the course that have taken up in college
because of multiple reasons. Out of the four reasons low income, failure to pass the
job interview, abundance in competitors, and other reasons, almost half of the
respondents chose the reasons of too much competitors for their account that their job
in not related to their degree. In regards to that, further statistical data on this research
and explanation will be found as you read ahead.

CHAPTER 1
Background of the Study:
After a UST-CFAD student finishes his course, he is faced with vast job
opportunities. These vast arrays of possibilities can cause uncertain salary for freshly
graduated students. Common UST-CFAD students are ignorant of the possible average
salary they will get until after they graduate. For example, before conducting the
research topic, we were able to confirm the possible salary fluctuation of a UST-CFAD
graduate through Sir Ruston Banal. According to him, his first job's salary was
considered high, but when he shifted to another firm or job, he was shocked his salary
dropped. This is one of the common experiences of a UST-CFAD fresh graduate
student.
Another prevalent conundrum that UST-CFAD fresh graduate students constantly
face with their jobs is the compatibility or connection between their college course and

job. Because of the high expectation of a company, UST-CFAD students usually end up
in the wrong job position. In effect, they do not have the full grasp of their designated
job. Furthermore, UST-CFAD fresh graduates desire the highest possible salary
instantly, so most of them turn to different industries that are barely related to their
college course.
Objectives of the Study:
1. To assess the average starting salary and income of CFAD Alumni
2. To analyze if the current profession of CFAD Alumni are complementary to their
chosen college degree
3. To determine if CFAD Alumni with honors and experience can affect the average
starting salary
Statement of the Problem:
One of the common challenges that fresh graduates are facing in the modern
world is seeking a profession that perfectly suits their college degree with a reasonable
starting salary. Most graduates have no idea or clue what their salary should be, and
what industry they would end up. With the rise of technology and modern society, the
minimum standards and expectations of different industries and companies were greatly
affected.
Most companies now would search for young jobseekers that have the three
qualitiescritical thinking, initiative, and effective communication skillsaccording to
the People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP) (Rosero, 2012). In
addition to that, they also seek for graduates who came from prominent universities. Of
course, graduates who have gained experience and who are currently pursuing a

masters degreecan have a potential impact on the starting salary and a better
opportunity from the rest. But what about other fresh graduates and alumni?
The purpose of this study is to know the starting salary of alumni and to
determine the expectations and qualities that companies are seeking for. Furthermore,
this research aims to know if alumni ended up in industries and jobs that are related to
their college degree.

Significance of the Study:

As advertising students, it is important for us to know where our course will take
us. After all, college is the key to our future. So we decided to conduct this research,
specifically for advertising students, to know every UST CFAD alumnis starting salary
as graphic designers, photographers, website designers, media illustrators, visual
merchandisers, and etc.
Statistics is a big help in conducting this research. Not only it can help by
summarizing or organizing our gathered data, but it can also help when we conduct a
survey research. A survey research could truly help in this research to know some of
USTs advertising students plans, target or what theyre aiming for. An example is to
know some of the jobs or occupation that most advertising students in UST desire the
most, especially seniors.
Scope and Limitation of the study:

The study will be conducted to determine the starting salary of graduates from
the University of Santo Tomas, College of Fine Arts. The study will also include
graduates with honors, to know if their accomplishments had an impact on their starting
salary and how these accomplishments became their potential advantage. There are
some unavoidable limitations in this study. First, because of the time limit, this research
will be conducted only on a small size of population which is only graduates University
of Santo Tomas from the College of Fine Arts. Therefore, to generalize the results of
larger groups of graduates, the research should involve more participants at different
school years and colleges. Second, this study consists of surveys which may lack prior
research studies. Finally, there are certain possibilities that the researchers may not be
able to contact the following respondents or the following respondents may reject the
interviews conducted by the researchers.
Hypotheses
1. Some alumni have ended up in the field related to their program.
2. The average starting salary of CFAD alumni are acceptable.
3. Alumni with honors or more experience may have a higher chance of
attaining a high position in their chosen field.

CHAPTER 3
Research Design
The study entitled A Study on the Employment Status of the College of Fine Arts
and Design Alumni is both a qualitative and quantitative research because the
researchers will be conducting surveys. A reason for doing a qualitative research is in
order to investigate and to understand further about the respondents answer and in
order to have a more detailed description. On the other hand, a reason for doing a
quantitative research is for the respondents to answer the given questions. The
researchers will use statistics to analyze the data.
The researchers will be using descriptive or survey methods. It can be used as
statistical inference on their respondents through data analysis. Also, it can help the
researchers to better define and measure the amount of salary of the respondents. It
will be appropriate because the process will describe, analyze and interpret the data.
Through survey method, the researchers will gather information from the respondents

about the study. They will come up with their findings after analyzing and presenting the
data.
Subject of the Study
The target population of this research study will be College of Fine Arts and
Design Alumni. We have selected this group because we want to give an overview for
undergraduate students. Our sampling procedure will be non-probability sampling since
we designated and set a specific number of respondents and demographic. As part of
our target, we will also include alumni who have been awarded with Latin honurs, and
candidates for Best Thesis award. If possible, we will also look for fresh graduates who
landed on a job unrelated to their college degree. This will help our study to give a
detailed and informative data based on the responses and answers we will collate.
Setting of the Study
This study will take place at University of Santo Tomas (UST) 2015. The surveys
will be conducted through the Internet. Several measures were taken to ensure that the
specified links will be appropriately refined for the certain types of people to be used in
our study.
Procedure of Study

Three General Survey approaches:

a. Telephone/ Cellular phone
b. Social Media Sites (Facebook, Skype, etc.)
Manner of administration:
a. Electronic surveys from Facebook and Google will be completed and
answered by the respondent and interviewee themselves.

To start off our research, we will be making survey questions that will be
approved by our professor for our respondents which are Alumni of UST
College of Fine Arts and Design, only then that we will be giving out our
survey. We would like to know some of the things theyre doing in their job
right now are related with their college degree. With the data that will be
collecting, well have to analyze and interpret it with the use of Statistics.
Statistical Treatment
The data that will be gathered will be compiled. The responses of the specific
respondents were categorized as fresh graduates of UST-CFAD.
To interpret the data that will be gathered, the researchers will use the following:
1. Percentage. This will be the presentation to see the profile of the respondents.
2. Frequency. It will show how many UST-CFAD Alumniwho are working in their
field of advertising arts.

Sources of Data
The researchers will be getting their source from a survey to our respondents,
who are UST-CFAD Alumni. Depending on the respondents availability, the researchers
will conduct an online or on the spot interview. Most of the respondents answer will be a
qualitative data.

RAW DATA

Respondents: 100

Fig.1

Fig.2

Fig.3 Here, it is shown that 20 respondents had jobs that arent related to their
course. 45% of them answered there are too many competitors for their chosen job;
while 30% answered its all because of the low income.

Fig.4

It can be noticed that the highest percentage from the current jobs of the
graduates from CFAD is the category others which is not related to their programs with
44.79%. From graduates of Advertising Arts, the highest percentage is being a
photographer with 10.42%. From graduates of Interior design, the highest percentage is
being an interior designer with 6.25%. From graduates of Industrial design, the
percentage are all equal. From graduates of Painting, the highest percentage is being a
graphic artist with 13.54%.

Fig.5 More respondents agreed that their starting salary was acceptable with a

percentage of 67.37% while some disagreed with a percentage of 32.63%.

Fig.6 The most percentage of respondents (74.74%) answered the amount 15000 to

50000 pesos is the most acceptable starting salary. While 23.16% thought the amount
8000 to 15000 pesos is enough. There are others who answered neither and gave their
own opinion.

Fig.7 70 respondents represent 73.68% of the estimated monthly income of those

who make P15,000 to P50,000 per month. The percentage of the respondents who
make a monthly income below P15,000 is drastically lower while the respondents who
make P50,000 to P75,000 is even more so.

Summary of Findings:
Objective: To analyze if the current profession of CFAD Alumni are
complementary to their chosen college degree

According to the data and answers we have collated, 79.17% ended up in a job
related to their course. This shows that CFAD graduates have a chance on landing on
their chosen industry. The remaining 20.83% did not wind up in their dream job mostly
because there were a lot of competitors and the starting salary that they offered with
were very low.
Objective: To assess the average starting salary and income of CFAD Alumni
These respondents suggested that the starting salary of a CFAD graduate should
range from 15,000 Pesos to 50,000 Pesos. The 73.68% of them receives an estimated
monthly income of 15,000 Pesos to 50,000 Pesos.

Objective: To determine if CFAD Alumni with honors and experience can

affect the average starting salary
Some of our respondents are already professors and professionals. One of them
is Ms. Ma. Carmela Cucueco. She is a graduated as Cum Laude from CFAD-Painting,

and shes currently taking up masters at UST-Graduate School. She is also a professor
in UST-CFAD and a freelance artist.

Conclusion
Knowing your average salary, as alumni, is great, especially when you are not aware of the
salary fluctuations. As you try other jobs, the salary differs. Some of the UST-CFAD alumni are
in the same field of their program they have learned. And some of them are not due to many
competitors and low income. Alumni that has a greater possibility to earn a high position are
with Latin honors or has more experience.

Recommendation:
Since incoming UST-CFAD freshmen students are not familiar of the starting
salary and employment status. This research can be used for students from UST-CFAD,
who wish to be informed not only about the starting salary and status of a UST-CFAD
fresh graduates and alumni, but also about the expectations of a company from an
applicant.

Future researchers can utilize this research by talking to the individuals who had
Latin honors, and ask for information about the experience they had when applying for a
job whether it was less demanding or not.
