The Cow Animal Totem

The Cow is a sacred and honored animal to many cultures and tribes. Hindus once
considered the Cow their most sacred animal in their keeping and the killing of them
was prohibited by law. The Irish also respected Cows and they were considered to have
large monetary value, therefore, they were guarded and protected accordingly. The
ancient Egyptians considered the Cow an honored animal and to them she represented
fertility and love. Several legends depict the Cows curdled milk as the creator of the
planet earth. They are the givers of nutrition. They represent ultimate sacrifice and the
female nurturing element. Cows are very intelligent and gentle animals seeing all with
their wide watchful eyes. They possess lunar magic and many lunar goddesses wear
the horns of the cow upon their heads. Cows are said to possess the magic of the
moon and many myths and legends depict the Cows special relationship to the
moon. They represent the devotion of motherhood, as they provide nutrition to the
children and people of the world.

Cow Spirit
Cow spirit symbolizes our maternal instinct to nurture and care for one another. Cow reminds us
to employ a more docile approach to the situation at hand. The key is to pay careful attention to
our affairs, as there may a tendency to follow the lead of others without question. The lesson is
to recognize that we all need to belong, but that we should not betray our truth to do so. Cow
promises fertility, wealth and fulfillment to the dreamer.

Cow dreams
To see a cow in your dream, symbolizes your passive and docile nature. You obey
others without question. Alternatively, a cow represents maternal instincts or the desire
to be cared for. For some cultures, the cow represents divine qualities of fertility,
nourishment and motherhood.
To see the skeleton of a cow, suggests that your mother or motherly figure in your
waking life is displaying a lack of emotions. She is being unresponsive to your needs.
To see a herd of cows, indicates your need to belong.
To dream that you are milking a cow, represents your willingness and drive to work
hard. In the end, you will benefit from your hard work.

Cow Symbolism
In many cultures the cow is symbolic of Mother Earth, and has been a symbol of fertility,
nurturing, and power.
They are closely associated with provision and very earth-associated in symbolism.
The cow is also a lunar symbol, aligning itself with feminine (yin) qualities (see list of yin
attributes) among the Chinese yin-yang energies.

The Egyptian goddess Nut is sometimes depicted with the cow having four stars on its
belly. This represents the four cosmic quadrants of the earth, and the respective flavor
each directional energy freely flows through each of these corners.
Also in Egyptian mythology, Hathor was an ancient goddess worshipped as a cow-deity.
Hathor was the Great Mother gooddess of joy, and was considered the nourisher of all
things. She was originally a personification of the Milky Way, which was seen as the
milk that flowed from the udders of a heavenly cow. She was also considered a
protective goddess and an emblem of royalty.
In Norse mythology the cow makes an appearance as Audhumla whose utters emitted
the four rivers of power - these provided nourishment for the giants (primarily the first
giant, Ymir) that ruled the First World.
In Vedic literature the cow is also a symbol of abundance and fertility as it represents
both earth and sky.
To Hindus and Buddhists, symbolism of the cow deals with patience and holiness. It is
considered India's most sacred animal. The calm, tender nature of the cow wins this
right among the Buddhists.
Cow (Bo): Once so important to the Celts that it was considered a form of
currency or monetary exchange. Ancient Irish lords were known as bo-aire or cow-lord.
The cow was sacred to the Goddess Brigit. The cow symbolizes contentedness,
defending the inner child, and providing for daily needs.

About
Mention Scottish Highland Cattle and people conjure up images of rugged and wild
mountain landscapes, misty hills, heather clad moorland, lonely long horned cattle
grazing in isolation. Archaeological evidence can place Highland Cattle back in the sixth
century whilst written records go as far back as the twelfth, yet no one can determine
the exact origins of the breed. What is known is theyre the oldest pedigree breed of
cattle in the world and the first breed to be registered. The Highland Cattle Society's first
herd book dates from 1884.

Originally there were two types. Kyloes, these were small and black in colour, and were
associated with the West of Scotland and the Islands, whilst the larger red haired cattle
grazed the Highlands. Today they are known collectively as Highland Cattle and the
recognized colors are red, black, yellow, dun, white, brindle and silver.
The correct name for a herd of Highlands is a Fold and that long almost comical fringe is
called a Dossan. Highlands dont have a fat layer hence their long double layered hairy
coat which combined with sweeping horns makes them so recognizable

Some little known facts associated with Highland Cattle is they thrive on poor grazing,
so their ability to improve scrubland makes them a valuable asset in conservation
grazing. That thick woolly coat is cast in summer but in winter they can survive in the
harshest weather. In Sweden they are the only cattle allowed to out winter by law!
Highland Cattle dont have a fat layer like other cattle, because of this Highland beef is
lean.
Today Highland Cattle can be found around the World with many countries having their
own Societies and Herd books. They can be found all over America, Canada, the
Australias and Europe, but hazard a guess and like most Scots, deep down, their hearts
are still Highland.
