UNC Charlotte’s “Saudi Night”

celebrates the culture of Saudi Arabia

Within 77 years Saudi
Arabia has raised it population’s
literacy rate from ten percent to
82 percent. This is just one of
many facts about Saudi Arabia
and its evolution as a people and
country. On Sat., Nov. 7 in the
Student Union the event Saudi
Night was held and celebrated
by approximately 270 guests.
There are 150 Saudi students
that attend UNC Charlotte.
From many of those students,
Saudi Students Organization
(SSO) is made possible, and it
organized the entire event.
In an overview of what
guests could take out of Saudi
Night, keynote speaker Marian
Bean, Director of International
office, gave insight. She said
that when the University was
established as an institute “We
all looked pretty much the same,
we all were one color, certainly
in culture anyway… There
wasn’t much sense of the larger
world.” She made the point that
UNC Charlotte was lacking the
experiences that others from
around the world could give its
students. “Times have changed…
we have students from 70 or so
countries. We can appreciate
the increased diversity that
expresses itself in many different
ways,” said Bean.
“We learn in ways we can’t
really explain… we build a
friendship, and a level of trust
that isn’t there if we don’t have
these experiences,” said Bean.
She encouraged students to step
out of their comfort zone when
with people of other countries.

guests as they enter a Saudi home
so in the spirit of replicating that
experience attendees were given
these treats.

conversation with Chartwells
dining services to discuss
student’s concerns about the SAC
and dining options on campus.
In conjunction with the head
of the Student Affairs committee,
Christopher McDonald,
Chartwells conducted a focus
group with members of SGA.
During the focus group, Raechel
Gutierrez, part of the judicial
branch, voiced her concern that
dining options were not available
on the east side of campus. In
response Chartwells plans to
open Crossroads Outtakes at
noon on Friday and Saturday “to
accommodate students on that
side of campus, especially with
the weather about to change.”
Other concerns expressed in
the meeting included the dining
options in the Student Union.
Students were happy with the
addition of Wendy’s, but thought
that it closed too early. Since the
meeting, Chartwells has already
extended the hours of Wendy’s

first saw the mouse appear in
1928 in the cartoon “Steamboat
Willie,” but over the years the
character has seemed to fade into
his own obscurity created by the
brand that bears his design.
Mickey has simply become
one with Disney and lately
Disney isn’t looked at in too high
regard.
To this reporter they might
as well be a monopoly with
their corporate dominance and
ownership over such television
networks as ESPN, ABC, and
their most recent purchase of
Marvel Comics.

Financial problems are the
number one reason students drop
out of college. At least one of the
top reasons depending on which
research you believe. The cost of
education has skyrocketed in the
past few decades.
If costs had not gone up
since 1980 and only inflation had
taken place the cost for a year of
education at a four-year public
university would be just $6,700
today. Instead tuition and fees
plus room and board cost an
average of $13,500. The real cost
of education has doubled in only
about 25 years. But why? What
changed?
The role and responsibilities
of America’s universities has
expanded. The university of
yesteryear provided one service
exclusively - an education. From
time to time you could also find a
place to eat and a place to sleep,
but the whole experience was
stripped down and fundamental.
Today quite the opposite is
true. Universities are responsible
for the health and development
of the whole individual. There’s
a counseling center on campus
to handle any students’ mental
health needs and a dedicated
health center to handle physical
health needs.

It looked as if the company
that created the character forgot
about the ticket that brought its
fortune. However, that might be
about to change.
A recent New York Times

Mickey,” the squeaky clean
character will be cantankerous

the game’s forbidding wasteland.

benefited from almost everything
on the list. These offices were
created to help students and they
do it quite well.
However, I often wonder if
in an effort to ensure success
we haven’t also created the
single largest sources of failure.
These offices and programs are
expensive and contribute to the
escalating cost of education,
which in turn is causing many of
us to fail.
But what should be cut?
How do we compete for the next
generation of North Carolina’s
brightest if we don’t have the
bells and whistles of other
universities?

college level work.
I understand that there are
people in the world that have
writing disabilities, but that
should not be a hindrance in
whatever it is that you write.
In order to overcome any
obstacles, the best thing to do is
repeat the process over and over
again until you get it.
I speak from experience. For
the first six years of schooling I
had a horrible speech impediment
that slowed my writing ability
since I did not understand how
some words sounded when
spoken properly. The fact of
the matter is obstacles can be

and repetition.

are a few things that students can
go by in order to stay on the right
track.

Which way to success?
Students have to take more calculated steps in
order to compete in the current job market

“Oh! The places you’ll go,” or
not go, whatever works out best.
This classic Dr. Suess title seems
to be the senior’s mentality lately.
When faced with the threat of
no job after graduation, what is
a senior to do?
“You’ll look up and down
streets.  Look ‘em over with
care,” but not because you have
choices or options to spare. The
North Carolina Department
of Labor’s report in Sept. 2009
showed the unemployment rate
in North Carolina has reached
10.4 percent and, while the
momentum of lay-offs has slowed
down since June of 2009 when
the unemployment rate was 11.2
percent, it is not what one would
call a reliable economy.
Options are slim, which is
why so many students chose
to continue their education in
hopes that by the time they are
out of school the economy will
be on the rise.
“And you may not find any
you’ll want to go down,” which is
why most will tuck tail and turn
back around. There is a growing
population of students who have
decided to stay in the safe zone,
college.
My personal opinion is this
trend will birth a generation of
highly educated and competitive
professionals because each
student has to fight tooth-and-
nail to get an entry level job.
“Out there things can
happen and frequently do,” to
those not afraid to say, “Hi, how
are you?” Hiring employers are
looking for the degree along
with experience.

Whether you are a freshmen

We’ve all heard of “FMyLife,”
the popular website that people
go to for laughs. The short
stories on that website submitted
by people are hilarious, but
cringe-worthy. It’s funny to read
about the unlucky things that
happen to people, but, at the
same time, reading about all the
misfortune can be depressing.
That’s why “MyLifeisAverage”
is gaining readers; not only are
the stories funny, but they are
common situations that could
actually happen to anyone.
  As the website states,
“MyLifeIsAverage is a place to
share your everyday mediocrity.
We believe that for every fail
story, or good story, there are
about a million normal stories.
So tell the world what makes your
life average.” Instead of “sharing
the little things that screw with
your day” on FML, people can
read the things that make us all

Don’t get me wrong, FML
is hilarious. Some of those
stories are unbelievable and
they’re always good for laughs.
FML turned failing into an
entertaining thing. On the other
hand, MyLifeisAverage is full of
good-hearted humor without the
fail. It represents the humor in
everyday life and the normalcy
that no longer seems boring.
These mini-stories posted on
the website can turn any typical
day into a good-natured story.
However, FMyLife and
MyLifeisAverage are not alone.
From these sites sprouted
“MyLifeisG.” MyLifeisG is
similar to the other two, but
instead of fail stories or average
stories, this website is full of
uplifting, happy, enthusiastic
entries. It is the opposite of
FMyLife; instead of fails, this
website contains only wins. There
are pages and pages of good news
and cheerful revelations.
A person can’t help but smile
after reading just a few of the
hundreds of entries. Websites
like these provide laughter and
smiles for those who submit
and for those who read them.
Although the laughter may be at
the expense of another’s epic fail,
it still stirs up conversation and
humor.
The stories on FMyLife,
MyLifeisAverage, and MyLifeisG
have constantly been talked
about because of their subtle
impact. Simply submitting brief
stories about everyday life has
turned into an online sensation.
Without much effort, these Web
sites have incited smiles, laughter,
and hope since they started, and
they are definitely worth reading.
Bad days can always seem better
after reading FMyLife.
MyLifeisAverage reminds
everyone that the most normal,
common things can have a
humorous twist on them.
MyLifeisG is proof that great
things do happen to people in
today’s society. All three of these
contain different stories, but
in the end, whether its a fail or
a win, they make other people
laugh.

Google, why they are so powerful today

Is Google becoming too
powerful? What started out as
an intuitive search engine back
in Sept. 1998 has evolved into a
multi-billion dollar corporation.
Google has made such an
impact on our culture, it’s now a
registered as a transitive verb in
Merriam Webster’s dictionary.
What separates Google from the
myriad of other search engines?
The answer is their desire to
know you better, to sell you stuff
more efficiently, predict what
you would say and act as your
personal secretary.
Google generates the largest
portion of their revenues from
advertising, according to their
Quarter 3 financial reports,
“Advertising revenues made up
97 percent of our revenues for
the three and nine months ended
September 30, 2008 and 2009.”
During the nine-month
period, Google recorded
revenue of $8,038,405,000
using their 97 percent: Google
made $7,797,252,850 just by
using targeted advertising. By
using Google, you are giving
the company momentum for
advertising.
Because you search for
things, Google is more apt to
narrow down what you would be
interested in buying; generating
money for themselves when you
click that link.
The part that is slightly
unnerving is that everything
involved with Google, from the
searches to the conversations
using G-mail’s chat are by default
recorded.
Google then sifts through
the data to better understand the
user. The data that Google pulls
is used intrinsically, not sold per
their privacy statement.
I’m guilty of falling into
Google’s snare, using: Google
Voice, Google Wave, G-mail,
Google Docs, Google Reader,
and the list goes on. By signing up
for these services, Google’s data
miners probably know me better
than I do; that is a problem.
Any piece of data that is
exchanged using any of these
services becomes the intellectual
property of Google. In other
words, my voicemails in Google
Voice are not that private.
In an age where everyone is
searching for the next tool that
will add convenience to their
routine lives, Google is here to
answer the call. However, how
much are we giving up in order
to have all of our information at
the click of a mouse?
Google has recently branched
into the consumer market
bringing the Android phone to
most major carriers, save AT&T
–but they are always behind so
it’s acceptable.
Ten years from now we could
see Google Bots running around
our cities doing errands for their
owners. Fifteen years from now,
Google could have a national
defense contract. Twenty years
from now, Google becomes a
real-life Skynet.
I’m almost certain that
nothing will be done in the
matter of regulating Google’s
control of the consumer market.
Considering the science
fiction movies that we watched
while growing up, it’s interesting
to see how they are slowly
becoming non-fiction.

“Adult Swim in a Box,”
MacFarlane pushes limits

Fox gives Seth MacFarlane
whatever he wants nowadays.
He practically owns half of
Fox’s Sunday night block of
programming. Why not? His
track record is more than
impressive.
MacFarlane is known for
creating such shows as “Family
Guy,” “American Dad,” and
“The Cleveland Show.” On
Sunday night MacFarlane took
Fox by the horns, showcasing
his own version of a variety show
that was so “Cleveland,” funny.
“Seth & Alex’s Almost
Live Comedy Show” was like
a variety show done “Family
Guy” style, showcasing Borstein
and MacFarlane’s other talents,
typically keep from the live
studio audience.

MacFarlane discussing his live show

Griffin and other “Family
Guy” characters) make a good
duet when performing musical
renditions together, opening
their latest creation by singing
the “Family Guy” theme song
melodically.
Fox has some big
“Cleveland,” to let MacFarlane
and Borstein to get away with
some of the jokes they told
during their half hour special;
having the typical television
censorship bleeps replaced with
the word “Cleveland,” (voiced by
former “Family Guy” and now
“Cleveland Show” star Mike
Henry) for one segment of the
show.
The edgy comedy MacFarlane
is known for was on full display
during this half hour comedy
special. From race to religion,
MacFarlane isn’t known to be
lenient on any comedic material.

This lack of leniency was
rather ironic within the show as
one segment relied heavily upon
Jewish jokes and Borstein is Jewish.
Don’t worry, they also made
fun of the deaf by Borstein
impersonating deaf actor Marlee
Matlin, which “Family Guy”
has done before. Though, not
many times can the person
subject to criticism show up and
return the favor, which Matlin
did. She reputably shut down
Borstein‘s performance and well,
belittled “Cleveland,” as much as
possible.
I don’t know how Borstein
and MacFarlane’s relationship
came to fruition, but it’s clear
that they are great together
and they don’t let anything get
between them.
Some people consider much
of MacFarlane’s comedy in bad
taste, while if you ask others
he’s simply hilarious. To be fair,
let’s call it a little bit of both.
MacFarlane’s constant abuse of
the Jewish religion is completely
shocking, but when you get past
the insensitive nature of the
jokes, it is kind of funny.
Overall, the show did what
it was it was expected to do:
entertain you for just long
enough, then leave when the
time is right. So with this, I’m
wondering what Fox will give
MacFarlane next. Maybe a
reality show where they worship
“Family Guy” and MacFarlane’s
other “comedic” devices?
Perhaps they’ll just branch
off Quagmire into a brand new
show (they’re already allowed
that once.)
Regardless of what’s in store
next for MacFarlane, “Seth &
Alex’s Almost Live Comedy
Show”, though most likely never
seeing an actual series, it was a
good and entertaining reason to
stay up after football on Sunday.

about, but you just can’t figure
out what to get them? If you
answered “No” or “I’m going to
get them a tie,” you might as well
stop reading now because I think
that special someone might not
be interested in this review (just
being honest.)
Recently Cartoon Network’s
[Adult Swim] went back into
its vault to finally release some
of the network’s most hilarious
shows, a few of the originals, and
also some “never before seen”
episodes. This “[Adult Swim] in
a Box” DVD collection will make
any fan of the of the ten p.m.
through six a.m. block of
nonsensical cartoons green with
envy.
At its core the box set
contains “Aqua Teen Hunger
Force,” “Robot Chicken” and
“Metalocalypse” which are all
current staples of [Adult Swim].
In addition to the main staples of
[Adult Swim], “Sealab 2021” and
“Space Ghost Coast to Coast”
may be welcome discoveries
incase you’ve missed their rather

late showings.
Overall the box set is a
welcome mix of shows that are
current and former hits of the
“mini-network”.
As with any box set, the
“Adult Swim in a Box” has its
downfalls. The main concern I
have with it is the actual seasons
they chose to include within it.
For example why chose
“Robot Chicken: Season Two”?
Was it just to overload stock of
unsold DVDs or simply because
the network felt this was the
“best season” of the stop motion
comedy? I can honestly say that
the show has gotten better since
season two, making it rather
difficult for me to agree with that
sentiment.
Another example is that
“Space Ghost: Coast to Coast”
has no particular plot; It’s really
just a spoof of talk shows.
The network, however, may
have felt that it was easier to
ship volume three because it is
all really the same show, just
with different guests. Lastly, the
$69.99 price tag may scare some
people away from this plethora
of entertainment, but I will say
that you are getting seven DVDs
of hilarious entertainment, so it
is worth it.
What is not mentioned in
the product description is the
inclusion of a DVD containing
previously unavailable pilot
episodes. They are: “Korgoth
of Barbaria,” “Welcome to
Eltingville,” “Perfect Hair
Forever,” “Cheyenne Cinnamon,”
and “The Best of Totally for
Teens”. These pilots add to the
collection by offering a great
mix of animated comedy and a
look at what might have been for
[Adult Swim].
I think the inclusion of these
plots into the collection makes
the box set worth buying because
[Adult Swim] is showing us what
they thought in an uncut format,
potentially giving these plots
a second chance (it worked with
“Family Guy” all those years
ago.)
Overall, I would recommend
this box set to any major fan of
[Adult Swim], like myself. This
way you don’t always need to stay
up until ten o’clock or go to the
[Adult Swim] Web site just to
watch these shows.
With this and the inclusion
of “never before seen” plots,
any fan would most certainly be
pleased. You can find “[Adult
Swim] in a box” at a store near
you or online.
