he rise of modern technology, though, has brought about a myriad of options

for children to attain what they feel they are missing. Whether it be through
chat rooms or instant messaging with their friends on social media sites,
today's children are spending unprecedented amounts of time in front of
screens. The amount of information they take in is astonishing. In the
absence of parental supervision and communication, children are developing
with the world at their fingertips, with unlimited information and possibilities
just a few clicks away. They are more willing than ever to get what they want
when they want it. This unbridled aspect of their technological endeavors is
necessarily formative, in that it trains children to thrive on excess, which is
itself the root problem of moral decadence.
These social vices which have eaten deep into the moral fabric of society and threatened its very
foundations have included murder, armed robbery, stealing, corruption at all levels of society,
gambling, rape, defilement, adultery and fornication, prostitution and the creeping incidence of
homosexuality and lesbianism to mention but a few.
Indiscipline and total disregard for traffic regulations have resulted in fatal accidents and
needless loss of lives. There seems to be no end to the spate of indiscipline and immorality that
have plagued the nation. What has accounted for the moral decadence that has engulfed this
country? Some people simply do not want to follow the rules of life and the rules of success.
They want to harvest where they have not planted. They want the good life but do not want to
sweat for it. They want shortcuts to success but experience shows that such unethical methods do
not bring lasting success.
there are too many media images, movies and games that not only
neutralize violence but often glorify it, so kids develop a sense of fun from all
of this, rather than being horrified or afraid.
There is not enough tough love from parents and guardians to help youth
understand there are consequences to actions and that there are boundaries
we must maintain to keep our society somewhat healthy. Some of us want
our children to grow up being 'individuals' who can follow their dreams so we
give too much leeway and responsibility without expectations or guidance.
Some of us have no time to spend with our kids since we either work too
much or we are busy following our own dreams. Our kids grow up learning
boundaries and rules from social media and games. Some of us ply kids with
electronics and electronic media without any monitoring and where kids find
social acceptance or even glory from intangible actions which builds a
confidence that is removed from reality. Some parents and guardians are just
so dysfunctional they shouldn't be allowed to raise children.

Technologies particularly television and internet has promoted to needs from desires. Televisions
and movies frequently show violence and causes trauma in some children while others tend to
watch them persistently. As they grow, those actions contribute in shaping their personalities,
values and beliefs. As a result, the kid will become aggressive or lose a sense of differentiating
reality and fiction of what they are seeing (Rayuso, 2008). In addition, Dr. Ted Baehr explained
about Lohan's behaviour that malformed by the characters from 'Sex & the City' whereby those
girls often change their sex partners. Lohan once mentioned that she wants her boyfriend to be
loyal but she wishes to keep flirting. The author observed that young stars are trying their best to
maintain their reputation and willing to do whatever it takes even if they have to appear horny in
almost every movie just to be seen as celebrities as they wish to be idolised unremittingly (2006).
Additionally, according to Rob Jackson (2004), amelioration of the internet has make it very
difficult for parents to shield their children from pornography as most of the children spent more
time online for homework or entertainment purposes. The ex-attorney general of Unites States,
John Ashcroft estimated that 9 in 10 teens have been exposed to pornography and many of them
are crave for porn images. Thus, indubitably internet is the fast ramp to sex addiction and as
children's minds are still in progress of maturing, addiction can happen quicker than what the
parents might think. Hence, to made media possible to rise youths with high virtue, media should
revolutionize their contents (Crewes, 2009). It is strongly urge that mass media have to censor
their movies before release them. They must rate the movies accordingly because most of the PG
or lower rated movies show things that should not be watched by small kids.
The power, speed and sophistication of the internet as a
communication medium in an information age cannot be
overemphasized. Its popularity has also attracted criticism and
worries over the effect of such medium on the youths. With the
beam lights on youths in high schools and employing the electronic
colonialism theory, this study sought to ascertain what the internet
especially social media has done to and for Nigerian youths.
