Bojan Jovi
Manifestoes of Serbian Avant-garde Poetics, Aesthetics, Ideology
Summary
This paper proceeds from the history of literary manifestoes and the general
characteristics of avant-garde programmatic texts. It describes the characteristics of
manifestoes in Serbian avant-garde, pointing out the changes in terms of content and
form from shorter, hybrid forms with mixed discursive-aesthetic functions towards
longer forms of almost purely philosophical nature, that is, from poetic attitudes
towards ideological statements aimed at achieving immediate social consequences.
The position of surrealism is emphasised, for it differs from its modernist predecessors to a certain extent. On the other hand, the programmatic texts the avantgarde ones in their entirety and those of the surrealists in particular, manifest enough
common and constant traits that one can speak of continuity. The basic difference
between surrealist proclamations and modernist/expressionist programmatic-manifesto-type texts is manifested in the surrealist distinction between poetry and literature, which leads to the rejection of the very institution and tradition of literature.
Finally, the author points out the effort on the part of representatives of official
culture to soften and assimilate, as much as possible, the modernist/avant-garde generation, as well as the similar attitudes of modernists after the First World War and
