Oppressive minor subjects

Nowadays, going to school to be educated is not only going take a lot of effort
but is also need a lot of money to spend with. This is because of the number of units offered
by the University and the cost of one unit is pretty expensive and it also depends on the type
of University that you had entered.
As a matter of fact, these students will endure the four or five years of paying
the University and because of this some of the students and parents are asking / complaining
because of the certain general education, minor subjects that are being required in the
university, which seemed to be irrelevant or unnecessary to their courses.
For example, some Universities are insisting in having this general subjects
that have became highly specialized that they cease to be of general interest.
The reason why these Universities required to have these students to take
general or minor subjects is that is gives students some refreshers of what they already
finished in basic education. We can presume that the students who passed the entrance exam
of the University have already these basic knowledge, the units intended for this minor or
general subjects so that we can maintain our basic education and in order to support to our
major subjects. Teachers of these subjects must not act like intellectual major-domos: unduly
demanding as if their minor subjects are as vital as the major ones.
Not that these general subjects are useless or must be thrown away. By
studying these minor subjects (mathematics, Filipino, history, politics, literature, theology,
sciences, etc), one can acquire varied knowledge and skills that can help them in to adapting
to their job and handling problems unrelated to ones specialization after graduation. It also
helps an individual to be exposed in other fields that one could pursue for further knowledge.
But units and requirements must be limited of these general or minor subjects.
For example, the same general subject to be served twice and thrice in basic and advanced
levels amounting to six or nine units, covering one and a half year is oppressive. Instead of
these students to be experts in their field, graduates may be ended up to be scatterbrained,
jack-of-all-trades with no mastery of any given discipline.
Some minors like for example Spanish may better off as electives. A variety of
foreign languages can be suited into course of students. Asian languages such as Korean,
Japanese and Mandarin can serve Asian students as well. Other minors are redundant, and can
be merged and contextualized as single studies. The units saved can be used for more indemand, practicable, and promising subjects that companies expect to see from resumes.
