Class: III-MECH
Staff Name: N.Premalatha

Subject Code: ME-64

Subject Name: Gas Dynamics and Jet Propulsion

COURSE OBJECTIVES
1

This course will develop the student's general knowledge in the basic mechanical design,
thermodynamics, fluid mechanics heat transfer, and combustion processes found in gas
turbines.

To provide a comprehensive knowledge of space science and engineering and their inter
relationship.
To teach the systems approach to conceiving, designing, manufacturing, managing, and
operating complex space systems.
A basic understanding of thermodynamic cycles of jet engines
A basic understanding of the compressible fluid flow in inlets of compressors and turbines.
A basic understanding of the combustion physics in combustion chambers
A basic understanding of the rational behind several types of jet engines.

3

5
6
7
8
9

The ability to analyze jet engines; determine propulsion efficiency and design inlets and
nozzles
This course shows the application of engineering principles to a variety of practical fluid
flow devices, including jet engines, combustors, and internal combustion engines.

10 Demonstrate their knowledge about the specific design aspects of rocket propulsion systems
and air breathing propulsion systems such as turbo-jets, turbo-fan engines, ramjets

COURSE OUTCOME
(a)
(b)
(c)

A significant emphasis for the course is the mathematical modeling of the

thermodynamics and fluid mechanics of the components making up a gas turbine.
Students go through design exercises such as specifying particular gas turbines for a
specific application, and also, designing and evaluating specific components within the
turbine and in aircraft systems.
Emphasis is placed on understanding physical phenomena and on the use of simulation
and theory to understand unsteady compressible flows and pressure waves in fluids.

(d)

Students will be able to complete the preliminary design for an aircraft such that it
satisfies assigned specifications

(e)

Students will be able to perform basic computations of aerodynamic forces and

propulsive forces, performance of aircraft
To apply mass, momentum and energy conservation principles to fluid dynamics
problems.

(f)
(g)

Analyze compressible flow problems including Prandtl-Meyer expansions, normal

oblique shocks and heat addition to compressible flow problems

(h)

Students will be able to predict the performance of rocket propulsion systems.
