b. Consider the real vector space P2 (R) of polynomials of degree less than or equal to two
with real coefficients.
For what vectors p(x) P2 (R) is the list p(x), p0 (x), p00 (x) linearly independent? (Here
0
p (x) denotes the derivative of p(x), and p00 (x) denotes the second derivative of p(x).)
We must have p(x) = a0 + a1 x + a2 x2 , with a2 6= 0.
To see this, first calculate p0 (x) = a1 + 2a2 x and p00 (x) = 2a2 .
On the one hand, if a2 6= 0, and c1 p(x) + c2 p0 (x) + c3 p00 (x) = 0, then c1 = 0 since else
there will be an x2 term in the sum coming from p(x). But we then must also have c2 = 0
since else there will be an x term coming from p0 (x). And finally we then must also have
c3 = 0 since else there will be a constant term coming from p(x).
On the other hand, if a2 = 0, then p00 (x) = 0 and so we may take c1 = c2 = 0 and c3 = 1.
