Introduction to Microsoft Word for Job Seekers

Event type: Computer Class

Time: 10 am- 12 pm or 5 pm - 7 pm
Age group: Teens, Adults
Skill level: Beginner

Introduction to Microsoft Word for Job Seekers introduces participants to Microsoft Word and focuses on
using Word to build a resume. Participants will learn how to open, create, open and save resumes. They
will also understand how to navigate Word and save and print their documents. We will use the Microsoft
Word resume templates as a basic format (without actually working in the unwieldy text boxes) to build a
resume. We will also look at using O*NET Online as a tool to find the applicable vocabulary for duties
associated with a career.

We have a lot of job seekers who struggle with beginning their resume writing process in Microsoft Word
and navigating Word once they have begun that process. We also see patrons that need to complete
resumes or edit resumes someone else has helped them create. This program will empower job seekers
with the knowledge they need to create a resume in Microsoft Word and navigate the software
independently. This program will give job seekers skills they can use at any point of their resume building
process.

The potential community partners are:

Maryland New Directions
One Stop Career Centers
Weinberg Housing and Resource Center
YWCA Greater Baltimore
CASA de Maryland
Catholic Charities, Our Daily Bread Employment Center, My Sisters Place

Bmore Clubhouse

To set up the event I will:

talk to Public Computer Center classes coordinator

talk to the aforementioned community partners

coordinate with Pratts job and career information center

develop Power Point

place on the PCC calendar

create flyers

The participants will be given an evaluation at the end of the class that will include their level of awareness
of the topic before and after class, their knowledge about the topic before and after class, their motivation
level as a result of the class, if they connected with the material or someone in the class and if they
enjoyed the class. I will also evaluate the program based on attendance over multiple sessions.

The Enoch Pratt Free Librarys mission is "to provide equal access to information and services that
empower, enrich, and enhance the quality of life for all." This program is aimed at helping our patrons who
are working to improve their quality of life through finding employment empower themselves with the skills
to develop a resume whenever they need to.

This program is easy to replicate at other branches that have a large job seeking population. This can also
be modified for high school students in school career centers or job training programs. There is also room
for this program to be taken to other locations where there is a population of job seekers who may not be
able to come to a library.
