Plants - Healthy Environment:

August 12 Recycle, Reduce, Reuse

August 19 What is Your Carbon Footprint?
Proposed Class: A series of three classes to help children become more
environmentally conscious citizens. The first class will look at how plants help the
environment and how some plants can tell you more about the air quality. The second
class will look at ways to recycle, reduce, and reuse material found around your house so
one is not contributing to the landfills. The final class will have the students look at
their carbon footprint. A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases and
specifically carbon dioxide emitted by something (as a person's activities or a product's
manufacture and transport) during a given period. ( http://www.merriamwebster.com/dictionary/carbon%20footprint). The students will also learn about ways to
decrease their footprint.
Program Needs and Partners: This program will require information about climate
change with respect to the different areas that will be discussed. Also needed, will be the
variety of activities to keep the participants engaged. Some of the potential partners for
this class would be NASA Climate Day program and
Howard County Recycling Program.
HCLS Mission Statement:
Mission We deliver high-quality public education for all
ages.
Vision: A major component of Howard County's strong
education system, we advance the economy, enhancing
quality of life.
Event Set-Up Needs: We will need a meeting room with
table and chairs. We will also need material that would go along with each of the topics.
Hopefully to be donated by the partners.
Evaluation: HCLS has evaluation sheets that customers can complete to let us know
what worked/didn't work about the class.
