    Barcelona,12thJune2013BarcelonaSupercomputingCenter(BSC)willdeployitsnextprototypesystem,advancingthe
    roadmaptowardsthesuccessfulintroductionofARMprocessorsinHighPerformanceComputing.InJuly,BSCwillinstallthe
    firsthybridacceleratorclustercomposedofARMCortexA9,NVIDIATeslaK20GPUandMellanoxQDRInfiniBand.Co
    fundedbythePartnershipforAdvancedComputinginEurope(PRACE)initiative,theclusterwillbenamedPedraforca[1]andwillbebuiltatBSCpremises.BSC
    andtheEuropeanHPCmanufacturerBullareinchargeoftheindustrialcoordinationandintegrationoftheproject,whiletheItalianE4ComputerEngineering
    companyisprovidingthecomputingnodes.
    PedraforcaenablestheuseofInfiniBandnetworksanddirectGPUtoGPUcommunicationthroughRDMAonARM.ItfeaturesalowpowerNVIDIATegra3(4
    coreCortexA9)toruntheoperatingsystemanddriveboththeTeslaK20acceleratorandtheQDRInfiniBandattheminimumpowerconsumption.
    Thebenefitsofthisnewsysteminclude:
    SuperiorenergyefficiencyforapplicationsthatrunalmostexclusivelyontheGPU,
    AhighbandwidthQDRInfiniBandwhichenablesremoteGPUoffloadingofhighlyparalleltasks,decouplingthehomogeneoushighperformancecluster
    fromtheGPUaccelerators.
    Prototypesarecriticaltoacceleratesoftwaredevelopment,bothsystemsoftwareandapplications.PedraforcaintroducesmultipleinnovationstotheARM
    softwarestack,leadingtoamoreenergyefficientplatformforthoseGPUcentricapplicationsthatmatchthecharacteristicsofthecluster.saysAlexRamirez,
    leaderoftheHeterogeneousArchitecturesResearchGroupatBSC.
    BSCdeployedthefirstARMbasedmulticoreHPCclusterinOctober2011withaclustercalledTibidabo[2].InNovember2012,BSCcollaboratedwithNVIDIA
    andSECOinthedevelopmentoftheKAYLAdevelopmentplatform,thefirsthybridARM+CUDAGPUplatform,whichwasfieldtestedinthesecondBSCcluster.
    PedraforcarepresentsanotherstepforwardintheBSCresearchroadmaponnewtechnologiesandinnovativearchitecturestowardsenergyefficientHPC.
