Psalm 27 (1st)

The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my
life of whom shall I be afraid? When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when
my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though an army besiege me, my
heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident. (1-3)
This psalm of David begins with a triumphant declaration of the glory of God and the
undaunted confidence which results in relying upon Him a life of security in Gods strength
without fear
This joyful assurance is not based on human strength but purely in the nature and power of God
Jeremiah wrote: Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his
strength . . . but blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him
(Jeremiah 17:5-7)
David declares that God is his light, his salvation and his stronghold
God is our light because He is light and light drives out the danger and anxiety of darkness
David was called the light of Israel (II Samuel 12:17), but he knew that his light was a
borrowed light (Matthew Henry) just as the moon shines in reflecting the brightness of the
sun
God is light, and His glory is in His self-revelation the epitome of which is in Jesus Christ
o In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind; the light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:4-5)
o Jesus said, I am the light of the world (John 8:12); in the Sermon on the Mount He told
His disciples: You are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14)
o God, the source of light, shines His light in us so that we know His glory in Christ: For
God, who said, Let light shine out of darkness, made His light shine in our hearts to
give us the light of the knowledge of Gods glory displayed in the face of Christ (II Cor
4:6)
o He enables His people, the body of Christ, to shine like stars and to become
blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation
(Phil 2:15)
God is our salvation, for He saves a word which means to rescue and to heal
o God in Christ rescues us from the cycle of sin and death: Therefore, there is now no
condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of
the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death (Rom 8:1-2)
o This salvation brings healing by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8); for anyone who
calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Joel 2:32, Acts 2:21, Romans 10:13)
o That is the word of faith we are proclaiming . . . that if you confess with your mouth,
Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be
saved; for it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your
mouth that you confess and are saved; as the scripture says, Anyone who trusts in Him
will never be put to shame . . . the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who
call on Him, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans
10:8-13)
David affirms that the Lord is the stronghold of life his life his strength or defense

 As a result, there is a divine stability regardless of worldly circumstance (evil men and
enemies)
David writes: God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in time of trouble; therefore
we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the sea (Psalm 46:1-3)
Though not being pursued militarily with such extreme malice as was David, we can entrust
our problematic situations of life and say with David: whom shall I fear . . . of whom shall I
be afraid . . . even then will I be confident and we can say with the Apostle Paul: If God
is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31)
