Review

Teachers Activity
Learners Activity
Yesterday, we have discussed An integer is any number that belongs to
about the set of Integers. Basing the set of positive and negative whole
upon the number line below, can numbers, and zero.
you recall what an integer is?

Very good. Now you are ready for

the next lesson.

worth P17.00, how much is left
from his allowance?
Is it good to have plenty of debts?
What are you going to do to avoid
this kind of situation?
How do you write the equation to
arrive at your answer?
Now, do you have any idea about
our lesson for today?
7.

No.
Be thrifty and spend our money wisely.
P10.00 + (-P17.00) = - P7.00
Our lesson for today is about addition of
signed numbers or Addition of Integers.

Presentation

Our lesson for today is about

Addition of Integers.
To illustrate the addition of
integers, let us consider a number
line. What have you observed
from the following illustration?

Integers can be represented by arrows

whose length is the numerical value,
extending to the right if positive and left
if negative.

Example 1: Addition of +3 and +2 =

+2
+3

Commonly written as:

(+3) + (+2) = + 5
3 + 2 = 5

Example 2: Addition of -3 and -2 =

-2
-3

(-3) + (-2) = - 5
Example 3: Addition of +7 and -4 =
-4

(+7) + (-4) = 3

Example 4: Addition of +5 and -10 =

-10

(+5) + (-10) = -5

for reporting).

Did you understand our lesson for Yes Sir.
today?
What is then the rules in addition
of integers?

Rules in addition of integers:

1. To add integers with like signs, find
the sum and copy the common sign.
2. To add two integers with unlike
signs, find the difference and copy the
sign of the greater number.

What is the importance of adding

integers correctly?

Adding integers or signed numbers

correctly is very important because it is
very useful in our real life situation.
Moreover, the knowledge of adding
integers correctly is fundamental and
useful as we move on to the next lessons
in the future.

Application (Dart Board Game)

Teachers Activity

Learners Activity

Now
you
are
going
to
demonstrate your skill in adding
integers. We will use the Dart
board game to construct our
equations.
Are you ready to learn more and at
the same time have some fun?
Yes Sir.

At this time, the pupils who belong to group 1 will be called The Sniper
Kids while the pupils who belong to group 2 will be called The
Sharpshooter Kids. The mechanics of the game are as follows:
1. Each group must have 5 players, taken by drawing lots.
2. Write the names of each player in their respective score board.
3. Decide who will play first by tossing a coin.
4. Have the first player (followed by the second player, and so on) throw
2 darts at a time at the dart board. If the dart hits the yellow portion, the
corresponding number is positive. If the dart hits the black portion, the
corresponding number is negative. When two darts are already thrown,
the members of each group shall demonstrate their skill by adding the
integers and put their answers on score board.
5. If the dart falls on the floor, the player is only given one chance to throw
the dart.
6. Add the scores of each team. The group having the highest positive score
wins and will receive a special prize.

Learners Activity

Ok remember our number 1 (Each group representative takes turn in

classroom policy: Observe safety throwing the darts while the members
at all times. The game starts now. demonstrate their skill by adding the
integers and put their answers on the
score board.)
Now let us see who got the highest
positive score. May I now check
your answers? Ok, the special
price goes to group _______.

Evaluation
Directions: In (half) sheet of paper, answer the following numbers:
I. Demonstrate your skill in adding integers:

Problem Solving.

1. In New York, the temperature was -14F in the morning. If the

temperature dropped 7F, what is the temperature now?
2. Louis was doing a science experiment about temperature. He
first measured the temperature of some water and found it
was17C. Then he put the water in the freezer and recorded the
temperature two hours later. It had fallen to -11C. What was the
change in temperature in two hours?
3. Mrs. Bautista has a bank balance of P120 at the start of the
month. After the end of the month, she deposits P70. How much is her
new balance?
