Dr Werner explained that this segment
of business offers great potential for
both Thermo Fisher Scientific and its
clients alike. Following the companys
extensive development and promotion
of the use of biomarkers, many of its
customers have recognised the value of
them as a diagnostic tool. By utilising
biomarkers in conjunction with more
traditional methods of diagnosis, patient
care and treatment can be radically
changed. This change holds the
potential to increase both the patients
quality of life during treatment, and the
attendant costs in health care services.

exceptional promotional opportunities.
Thermo Fisher Scientific has taken full
advantage of these; online videos, case
studies, journals, expert webpages and
presentations are all utilised to promote
the benefits of the companys products.
With Thermo Fisher Scientifics
increasing penetration of these new
markets, and a new biomarker for
prenatal screening being finalised for its
launch next year, the companys growth

healthcare services. Dr Werner admits

this process does take time; however
clinical trials and studies are speeding
this process. Thermo Fisher Scientific
and its Medical Affairs and Clinical Trials
division has conducted some of the
largest clinical studies in Europe and
the USA. Although these are centred on
heart conditions and the use of the
companys product Copeptin to
diagnose patient prognosis following
myocardial infarction, they demonstrate
the companys commitment to its
products and their promotion.
Consequently, PCT has become the
standard for bacterial infection
diagnosis and license agreements have
already been agreed with the
companies Siemens and Rosch.
Dr Werner stated that Thermo Fisher
Scientific would continue to promote the
benefits of its products utilising a variety
of communication tools. In addition to its

ships around 2,500 orders per month for
biomarkers to more than 65 countries.
The company has a near-term plan to
continue to develop new products and
new innovations, and has recently
launched its latest offering,
Proadrenomedullin. Dr Werner outlined
that this is a highly developed tool for
Patient Risk Stratification and that the
project would be intensely developed.
Dr Werner explained that, for medical
treatment to advance, there must be an
open discussion on diseases.
Biomarkers can assist this by simplifying
a more accurate diagnosis; however,
physicians and clinicians have very
limited opportunity to explore these
tools. Information on Thermo Fisher
Scientifics products must be readily
available, and must demonstrate their
benefits to medical practices and

services. Firstly, the confirmation of
bacterial infection indicates the
appropriate use of antibiotics as a
treatment; viral infections (such as
bronchitis and pneumonia) can not be
treated in this fashion. This prevents the
waste of vital medicines and reduces
the risk of other conditions developing a
resistance to antibiotics through
over-usage. Secondly, by identifying
how advanced the infection is, clinicians
can assess the patients need for
treatment. Risk stratification allows for a
more efficient use of services; mild
cases can be treated at home, whereas
patients with severe conditions can be
hospitalised immediately. Through the
reduction of the use of medicines and
the deployment of appropriate
treatment, medical costs are reduced
and patient comfort is enhanced.
Thermo Fisher Scientific has
completed the development of several
such products recently; in addition to
PCT, the company has launched
biomarkers such as Chromogranin,
Vasopressin and Prolactin. These
products have the potential to create
significant changes to point of care
facilities, such as casualty departments
and healthcare walk in centres.
Biomarkers are simple to employ and
can provide results rapidly; in addition,
they are relatively inexpensive. The
early diagnosis and treatment of
conditions provides tangible financial
benefits. Furthermore, early intervention
and a stratified medical response can
confer much greater financial benefit
when compared to the long-term
consequences of more traditional
diagnostic systems. Very early
treatment or cure can obviate the need
for much more intense treatments or
hospital admission further down the line.

benefits to health care organisations are
apparent; with hospitals and medical
facilities experiencing shrinking budgets
and cutbacks, they are proving
increasingly attractive.
Discussing Thermo Fisher Scientifics
biomarker, PCT (Procalcitonin), Dr
Werner explained that it is a biomarker
utilised to identify sepsis in patients.
Traditional diagnosis tools identify
indicators of sepsis such as
inflammation; however, this method
does not rule out other potential causes
such as viral infection. PCT works by
reacting with the by-products of
bacterial action within the human body;
the substances created by this chemical
reaction are both detectable and
measurable. Not only does this confirm
the diagnosis, it identifies how advanced
the condition is, which provides two
