All machines are self-ventilated.
In order to achieve a good efficiency the fans are designed with shaped blades and are therefore
unidirectional. Designs with straight blades (for both directions of rotation) result in a lower

The housing is a torsionally rigid welded construction. The stator is fitted into two ribs within
the housing and doweled to safely withstand the short-circuit forces. The two end ribs are
provided with spigot seatings for the bearing endshields. Clearance holes for fastening the
machine to the foundation are located close to the bearing endshields in order to obtain
maximum possible flexural rigidity. Jacking bolts and angled faces for drilling the dowel holes
are provided in the feet to facilitate alignment and installation on site. There is an opening,
according to DIN 42962, at each side at the N-end for fitting a terminal box.
An earthing boss with a milled seat for the cable connection is provided at each side below the
terminal box opening. On horizontal machines the air inlet and outlet openings are on the top.

Standard Construction of Sleeve Bearing

The sleeve bearings are the flange-mounted type in accordance with DIN 31693. 4 pole AMCs
have center flange-mounted bearings acc. to DIN 31694 . 50 Hz machines have cylindrical
sleeve shells, 60 Hz machines have 4 lobe sleeve shells.
The bearing housing is manufactured in high grade cast iron and is designed for heavy duty
performance. The bearing shells are spherically seated in the housing.
The housing, seals and oil-ring are all in split design. This enables the bearing shells and seals to
be dismantled without uncoupling the machine. Both bearings have the same diameter.
AMC 4 pole with 4 lobe sleeve shells are without oilring!
Note: No emergency oil function on these bearings.
On the standard design, both bearings are non-locating (Bearing end float +/- 6.5 mm). It is
assumed that axial guidance of the shaft train is provided by the driven equipment or gearbox.
(Locating bearing see options.)

The standard degree of protection is IP54. An additional seal in split design is always
provided on the machine-side of the bearing in order to avoid the adverse effects of
possible low pressure or eddies in the air inside the machine.

The standard design includes an oil sight glass in the bearing housing, an inspection glass
to observe the oil-ring and temperature monitoring. (Pt 100 resistance temperature detector
in 3- or 4-wire design, at the bottom half of each shell).

Recommended lube oils are given in Table 4-8 and in the Maintenance Instructions.

The N-end bearing is always insulated. The insulating layer is located in the bearing
housing on the spherical seat for the shells.

When the machine is to be connected to a separate lube oil supply system, the standard
design will include an inlet pipe with a manometer, a throttle valve and a DIN or ANSI
flange, and oil according to Table 4-8 is assumed.

Before dispatch, the machine is provided with a rotor lock to protect the bearings from
being damaged during transport.

For the vertical sleeve bearing arrangement, all the sliding surfaces of the bearing are fully
submerged in a self-contained oil bath; the lubricating oil is normally cooled by a cooling coil.

The insulation materials employed meet the requirements for Class F as defined by IEC
(maximum permissible temperature 155C).
The stator coils are wound from rectangular shaped wire. The insulation structure is the
Micadur-Compact system, now well established for almost thirty years, and by which the
coils are wrapped over their whole length with overlapped layers of glass-mica tape (refer also
to brochure 3BFP 001 980 R0101 REV A 12/98 Micadur-Compact Industry Insulation
System for Rotating Electrical Machines). The winding slots are closed with highly permeable,
powder composition wedges.
Irrespective of voltage, the finished wound stator is subjected to vacuum-pressure-impregnation
and cured in a hot air oven. The winding elements are then so rigid that they can withstand the
forces arising during system transfers and short-circuits without sustaining damage.
In addition to the final high-voltage test performed on the finished machine, dielectric tests with
a.c. voltage and impulse voltage with steep wave fronts are carried out during winding
production to ensure that the coil and turn to turn insulation meet the specified requirements
(surge withstand impulse strength in accordance with IEC 60034 - 15).
Remark: Experience made by many users and manufacturers has shown that occasionally surge
voltages can arise which subject the motors to more severe conditions than those specified by
IEC 60034-15. For rated voltages above 11 kV, overvoltage protection, consisting of surge
capacitors and ZnO voltage arresters, is provided close to the motor terminals. The purpose
would be to provide a reliable protection of the motors against switching surges with steep wave
fronts and high amplitudes, which can arise particularly with vacuum breakers at pre-ignition
and multiple restriking.
The standard design includes 6 resistance temperature detectors, 3 or 4-wire type Pt100, in the
winding slots to monitor the stator winding temperature (2 per phase). The leads are led to the
auxiliary terminal box.
2SWLRQV

Second vacuum impregnation for nuclear plants, extended exposure to steam, or extremely
dirty operating areas

 5RWRU:LQGLQJ
The standard design incorporates a copper, deep-bar cage winding. The bars are hard-soldered
to the short-circuit rings by a long established and well proven technique. The bars are swaged
along their whole length to afford a tight fit to the slot walls. This prevents damaging bar
vibration. A reinforced high-strength shrink rings is needed for some motors with high
circumference speed.

The terminal box is a welded construction and is flange-mounted to the machine housing. The
degree of protection is IP55. A pressure relief flap is provided in the back wall, which would
open towards the machine in case of a short-circuit in the terminal box. The standard design is
for plastic insulated cables entering from below. It can be turned in steps of 90 in either
direction to afford cable entrance from the side or from above. The direction of cable entrance
should be known when placing the order because changes after manufacture are not always
possible.
The standard design includes a blank gland plate in order to accommodate the numerous
connection possibilities open. The table below shows the preferred number of cables entering
the terminal box for the different types of terminals.

The number of cables, type and diameter should be known latest when the motor outline
drawing is approved by the customer. Should it be necessary for the motor manufacturer to drill
the gland plate and provide cable glands this should be requested at the same time (extra
charge). It is recommended that the machine is delivered with fitted cable glands as this can
save considerable extra work on site.
The star point is not lead out in the standard design.
For voltages up to 4.2 kV and currents higher than 400 A, bar terminals are provided for the
connection of up to 4 cables per phase. For voltages up to 11 kV stud type terminals (to DIN
46264) are employed. For voltages above 11 kV the terminal connections are sealed with a
shrink-sleeve termination system (Fig. 7-4).
The terminal boxes are provided with internal and external grounding points.

The painting system is discribed in ABB document 2065 4232.

 $FFHSWDEOHHQYLURQPHQWDOFRQGLWLRQV
The described standard painting system is suitable for the ambient conditions corresponding to
C1-C2 according to ISO 12944-2.

Indoor installations.

Outdoor installations in tropical climates with strong solar radiation.

Desert areas with exposure to sandstorms.

Unheated spaces with varying temperature and relative humidity.

The system is not suitable for areas with radioactivity, coastal areas (saliferous air), installations
below and top decks (splashing saliferous water), drilling platforms and ships.
After sandblasting, residual blast material will be removed and the parts will be cleaned and
dried.

 6XUIDFHWUHDWPHQWSURFHGXUH
Welds are ground for removal of spatter and slag, if any, edges are rounded to at least 2 mm
radius and any surface defects are mended to preparation grade P3 according to ISO 8501-32.
All steel surfaces to be painted are degreased and blast cleaned to Sa 2 1/2 according to ISO
8501-1:19883. Edges and areas hard to reach with spraying are first primed using a brush, after
which primer is sprayed on all parts. When using zinc rich paint, immediately after drying the
zinc rich paint is covered with the intermediate coat in order to protect the surface from picking
up dirt. Surface preparation and painting are carried out indoors on dry goods of ambient
temperature. The temperature of the painting area is kept > 15 C and the relative humidity is
kept < 70 %.
After drying of the paint, the parts are transported to the machine shop and assembled to a
complete machine. Before application of further coats of paint the surfaces are ground, vacuum
cleaned and washed with a solvent to secure good adhesion between the paint layers. The
painting is then completed with another layer of primer/intermediate coat and the topcoat.
Each paint booth is well lighted, well ventilated and equipped with a lift, so that the painter can
easily reach all parts, also on the largest machines. High pressure spraying is performed using
two-component equipment, in which base and curing agents are mixed in the gun. The paint
materials are heated, which facilitates the use of high solid low solvent products. Before release,
the surfaces are visually inspected and the total dry film thickness measured using an
electromagnetic inductive device.

A customer requires an offer for a 11200 kW motor in temperature rise F (105 K), 6 kV, 50 Hz,
1000 rpm.
The data of the offered motor would be as follows:
Motor type

AMC 800 M6

Rated output

11200 kW (list machine 10000 kW)

Speed

n = 1000 - 1.12 (1000 - 995) = 994 r/min

Stator current

I = 1.12 x 1119 A = 1253 A

Torque

7n = 1.12 x 96.0 = 107.5 kNm

Efficiency

K = 97.8 - 0.11 (100 - 97.8) = 97.5

Power factor

cosM = 0.88

Current

I0/IN = 0.28/1.12 = 0.25

Switching operations, as for instance reswitching following short voltage interruptions, can
produce torques inadmissible for the standard machines. If such are expected, a torsional
vibrational analysis should be performed. Should the motor manufacturer be contracted to carry
out these calculations he must be furnished with the necessary data on the shaft train
components and on the conditions of the power supply system.

 0HFKDQLFDO%HKDYLRXU'XULQJ&RQYHUWHUIHG2SHUDWLRQ
Converter-fed operation leads to a reduction in the nominal output because of additional losses
resulting from non-sinusoidal voltages and currents. Furthermore, oscillating torques arise and
are superimposed to the constant driving torque. Should the exciting and resonant frequencies
coincide, these torques could lead to inadmissible stressing in the shaft train. Therefore, it is a
basic principle that for converter-fed operation a torsional vibration analysis must be performed
in order to check the mechanical stresses in the whole shaft train. The motor manufacturer is not
responsible for torsional analysis.
$&6
The integrated Sinus-filter reduces the effects of the converter to a negligible extent.

 ,QVXODWLRQ
Due to the voltage harmonics which arise during converter-fed operation the winding insulation
is laid out for at least double the rated motor voltage.
For $&6 with sinusoidal filter normal insulation for line fed machines can be applied.
For machines fed by a non-ABB converter, special information on insulation requirements have
to be provided.

 %HDULQJV
Converter-fed operation causes additional shaft voltages which could result in bearing damage.
Depending on the converter type the following provisions are recommended:

ACS 1000: no special provision necessary

ACS 6000 and Megastar: Independent of bearing type (antifriction, sleeve) both bearings
has to be insulated

ACS 600: Independent of bearing type both bearings have to be insulated

other converters on request

Additionally careful grounding of the motor, right choice of the feeding cable and its correct
protective earthing contribute to a failure free operation of the motor.

In case of motors fed by ACS 600 a common mode filter should be provided.
To prevent bearing current paths, also the speed monitor has to be fully insulated against the
shaft.

 6SHHGPRQLWRULQJ
As a rule, speed monitoring is necessary for machine control. Therefore, the N-end of the shaft
provides the possibility of mounting a speed monitor. The associated extra charge, including
that for the recommended speed monitors are to be extracted from the accessories price list.

Self-ventilation is sufficient for driven equipment with a load characteristic where the torque
varies to the square of the speed (e.g. pumps). If the torque is independent or only slightly
dependent on the speed, then self-ventilation is not sufficient to provide for an effective heat
transfer in the lower speed range. In such cases, the necessary air circulation must be provided
by separate ventilation. In air-air cooled machines this is true for both the primary and
secondary cooling circuit.

 1RLVH
Current harmonics cause additional noise excitation. In general, the noise level is therefore
higher for converter-fed operation than for line operation. For machines which already have a
high noise level (high speed and air-air cooler) in direct online operation, the difference will
generally be about 6 dB(A). For machines with a relatively low noise level (e.g. air-water cooler
and low to medium speed), the difference can be up to 10 dB(A). Binding data should be
requested for each particular case.
Exception: For ACS 1000 the noise increase will only be 1,5 dB (A).

 &ULWLFDOVSHHG
When selecting the machine it must be ensured that the first critical speed is at least 20% above
the operating speed range. In case of machines having an operating speed range between two
critical speeds, the critical speeds must have at least 20% margin to the specified speed range.

The section Behaviour during switching and converter-fed operation is to be observed with
regard to the suitability of the shaft and the shaft train when subjected to the oscillating torques
which arise during converter-fed operation.

In principle, the test procedures were based on the IEC recommendations. For tests not covered
by the IEC recommendations, either the IEEE, NEMA, EN or DINVDE standards were drawn

were followed.
However, if the purchase order specifies a particular standard, then that standard is to be

The following type tests can also be carried out in addition to the routine tests against extra
charge:

Temperature rise test for stator winding (two-frequency method).

Efficiency determination by the equivalent circuit method ( according IEEE 112F1).

Plotting of no load curve (iron and friction losses) up to 1.1 times rated voltage.

Plotting of short circuit characteristic at reduced voltage up to 1.3 times rated current.

The temperature rise test and efficiency determination will be performed at full load or with
equivalent load (two-frequency method, e.g. vertical motors, big AMC motors). Slip and current
will then be calculated, iron, friction and windage losses will be taken from the no-load test.
