Passage 2: There are in the souls of wicked men those hellish principles (15, 40) reigning (16, 41),
that would presently (17, 42) kindle and flame (18, 43) out into hell fire, if it were not for Gods
restraints. There is laid in the very nature of carnal (19, 44) man a foundation (20, 45) for the
torments (21, 46) of hell. There are those corrupt (22, 47) principles, in reigning power (23, 48) in
them, and in full possession (24, 49) of them, that are seeds of hell fire. These principles are active
(25, 50) and powerful, exceedingly (26, 51) violent (27, 52) in their nature, and if it were not for the
restraining hand of God upon them, they would soon break out, they would flame out after the same
manner as the same corruptions, the same enmity (28,53) does in the hearts of damned (29, 54)
souls...The souls of the wicked are in scripture (30, 55) compared (31, 56) to the troubled seas...Sin
is the ruin (32,57) and misery (33, 58) of the soul; it is destructive (34, 59) in its nature; and if God
should leave it without restraint,(35, 60) there would need be nothing else to make the soul perfectly
(36, 61) miserable. The corruption of the heart of man is immoderate (37, 62) and boundless in its
fury (38, 63);...whereas if it were let loose, it would set on fire the course (39, 64) of nature...

Passage 3: The problems facing a Hellenistic city (65, 85)--provided (66, 86) its interest (67, 87) did
not clash with that of one of the major (68) states--was not fundamentally (69) different (70, 88) from
those which a Classical (89) times used to be confronted (71, 90). One example (72, 91), taken from
the history of Apollonia on the Pontus, will suffice (73, 92) to demonstrate (74, 93) the point. (75, 94)
It was a city of modest (76) size, fully representative (77) of those urban (78, 95) communities (79,
96) that flourished (80,97) from one end to the other of the Hellenistic world...Its divine (81, 98) patron
(82, 99) had played an essential (83, 100) role (84) in colonization.

Passage 2: The Indians silently repaired (51,76) to their appointed (52,77) stations (53,78),
which were fissures (54,79) in the rocks, whence they could command (55,80) the approaches
(56,81) to the foot of the falls. In the center of the little island, a few short and stunted pines
(57) had found root...Here they secured (58,82) themselves, as well as circumstances (59,83)
would permit (60,84), among the shrubs and fragments (61,85) ...The opposite (62,86) shores no
longer presented (63,87) a confused (64,88) outline (65,89), but they were able...to distinguish
(66,90) objects (91).
A long and anxious (67,92) watch succeeded (68,93), but without any further evidences
(69,94) of a renewed attack; and Duncan began to hope that their fire had proved more fatal
(70,95) than was supposed, and that their enemies (71,96) had been effectually (72,97) repulsed
(73,98). When he ventured to express this impression (74,99) to his companion, it was met by
Hawkeye with an incredulous (75,100) shake of the head.

2008 NJCL Greek Derivatives Test
The ecclesiastical (1) sphere is practically mine. I am the architect (2) of churches, cathedrals, and
basilicas (3), from the asphalt base (4) in the crypts (5) of the catacombs (6), up to the apse (7) and
chimes (8) in the dome. I am the architect of monasteries for monks (9) and anchorites (10), and of
asylums (11) for orphans (12) and lepers and maniacs (13). Mine is the hierarchy (14) from the pope
on his dais (15) with his tiara, to the mitered bishop in his diocese, and the parish priest in his
presbytery (16). Deacons and acolytes (17), clergy and laity (18), papal encyclicals (19), diocesan
synods (20), parochial homilies (21), and all dogmatic (22) theology, with its mysteries and myriad
(23) topics--are mine. The Bible is mine from Genesis, Exodus, Deuteronomy of the Pentateuch...to
the Evangelists (24) of Christ, to the Epistles (25) and Apocalypse (26) of his Apostles, Epiphany
(27), Pentecost.(28)..the Gregorian tones (29) of litanies (30) and antiphons (31) are melodious (32)
through me, and I composed the canon (33) and liturgy (34) with its symbols (35).

During a period (61) of lethargy (62) I was petrified (63) at a phantom (64), bounding from my lexicon
(65), with this cataract (66) of phrases (67): 'Are you a Baptist (68), Methodist (69), Episcopalian (70),
Catholic (71), or Christian (72)? Without me you were anonymous (73). Do you stigmatize (74)
heresy (75) and schism (76), hypocrisy (77) and blasphemy (78)? Do you blame schemers (79)
against the Mosaic decalogue (80)? Do you impose anathemas (81) upon apostates (82), idolaters
(83) and atheists (84) or exorcise (85) the devil (86) and his demons (87) with their diabolical pomps
(88)? Are you zealous (89) for proselytes (90) and to baptize neophytes (91) after catechism (92)
and to canonize (93) orthodox (94) martyrs (95) with halos (96) and emblems (97), scandalizing (98)

2008 NJCL Latin Derivatives Test
Read the following passage and select the closest SYNONYM for each word as used in this passage.
At age fifteen, appearances were mending (1)...her complexion improved (2), her features were
softened by plumpness and color, her eyes gained more animation (3), and her figure (4) more
consequence. Her love of dirt gave away to an inclination (5) for finery...she had the pleasure (6) of
sometimes hearing her father and mother remark on her personal (7) improvement...To look almost
pretty is an acquisition (8) of higher delight (9) to a girl who has been looking plain (10) the first fifteen
years of her life, than a beauty (11) from her cradle can ever receive (12).
Her time was so much occupied in lying-in and teaching the little ones, that her elder daughters were
inevitably (13) left to shift for themselves; and it was not very wonderful that Catherine, who by nature
(14) had nothing heroic about her, should prefer (15) baseball and running about the country at the
age of fourteen, to books--or at least books of information (16)--for, provided that nothing like useful
(17) knowledge could be gained from them, provided they were all story and no reflection (18), she
had never any objection (19) to books at all. But from fourteen to seventeen she was in training (20)
for a heroine; she read all such works as heroines must read to supply (21) their memories (22) with
those quotations which are so serviceable (23) and so soothings in the vicissitudes (24) of their
eventful (25) lives.

Read the following passage. For the indicated words select the MEANING of the Latin ROOT
contained in the English word.
No one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy (26) would have supposed her born to
be a heroine. Her situation (27) in life...her own person (28) and disposition (29), were all equally (30)
against her. Her father was a clergyman, without being neglected (31) or poor, and a very
respectable (32) man...He had considerable (33) independence (34), and he was not in the least
addicted (35) to locking up his daughters. Her mother was a woman of useful (36) plain (37) sense
(38), with a good temper (39) and with a good constitution (40). Instead of dying, as anyone might
expect (41), she lived on to enjoy (42) excellent (43) health herself...a fine (44) family (45) for the
number (46). The Morlands were in general (47) very plain. She had strong features (48)...not less
propitious (49) for heroism seemed her mind. She greatly preferred (50) cricket to the more heroic
enjoyments of infancy, nursing (51) a dormouse (52), feeding a canary (53)...If she gathered flowers
(54) it was for the pleasure (55) of mischief--at least it was so conjectured (56)...Such were her
propensities (57)--her abilities (58) were as extraordinary (59)...She was often inattentive (60) and
occasionally (61) stupid (62)....to repeat (63) the Beggar's Petition.

sources (19) of human (20) danger (21), or thought of them only to dismiss (22) the idea of life upon them as
impossible or improbable (23). It is curious (24) to recall some of the mental (25) habits (26) of those departed
(27) days. At most, terrestrial (28) men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior (29) to
themselves and ready to welcome a missionary (30) enterprise (31). Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are
to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts (32) that perish (33), intellects vast (34) and cool and
unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious (35) eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans (36) against
us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment (37).
