SmartAX MA5600T Multi-service Access Module

Product Description

1 Product Positioning and Features

The MA5600T can be subtended with remote devices to realize centralized management
and configuration.
l

Mobile bearer solution

Based on the most existing IP broadband networks, the MA5600T supports the return
transmission function for the newly constructed base stations that are widely distributed.
This helps to meet the bandwidth and cost requirements, and realize the integration of fixed
and mobile networks at the bearer layer for single network maintenance. In this way, the
CAPEX and OPEX can be greatly reduced, and the integration of fixed and mobile networks
is promoted towards a full-IP network.

1.2.3 Powerful GPON Access Capability

This topic provides information about the GPON access capability of the MA5600T.

Strict Compliance with ITU-T Recommendations

The ITU-T G.984.x recommendations, including ITU-T G.984.1 to ITU-T G.984.4, define the
following aspects for the GPON system:
l

GPON network architecture

Specification of physical parts

Protocol at the data link layer

Management and control interfaces

The MA5600T is designed in strict compliance with the ITU-T G.984.x recommendations. It is
capable of working properly with GPON terminals of different vendors.

Bandwidth Allocation
The MA5600T supports both static bandwidth allocation (SBA) and dynamic bandwidth
allocation (DBA).
l

SBA guarantees that each ONT obtains a fixed bandwidth.

DBA guarantees that the bandwidth is dynamically allocated to the ONTs according to the
change in user traffic.

SBA and DBA support a bandwidth control granularity of 64 kbit/s.

The MA5600T provides hierarchical bandwidth control in both the upstream and downstream
directions.
l

In the upstream direction, bandwidth is allocated to the users or the user groups in the SBA
and DBA modes based on the transmission container (T-CONT).

In the upstream and downstream directions, accurate committed access rate (CAR) is
performed based on the traffic stream.

The traffic stream CAR supports a 64 kbit/s bandwidth control accuracy.

The MA5600T adopts the passive optical transmission to resolve the bandwidth bottleneck
of the access over the twisted pair cables.

SmartAX MA5600T Multi-service Access Module

Product Description

1 Product Positioning and Features

The MA5600T supports the downstream rate of 2.488 Gbit/s and the upstream rate of 1.244
Gbit/s.

The MA5600T provides a sufficient bandwidth that meets the current service requirements
and guarantees provisioning of services with a higher rate in the future.

The MA5600T adopts the passive optical transmission to support a long-reach service
coverage, which the access technology over the twisted pair cables does not support.

The maximum physical transmission distance is 20 km.

The MA5600T supports the downstream forward error correction (FEC) to extend the
transmission distance.

Long Reach

High Optical Split Ratio

The MA5600T supports a high optical split ratio of 1:64. This helps to expand the system
capacity and save fiber resources, thus facilitating the expansion of the network.

High Efficiency
l

All data is encapsulated as frames with a fixed length of 125 s based on GPON
encapsulation mode (GEM). This helps to reduce the overhead bytes and improve the
transmission efficiency.

When the transmission bandwidth is 1.244 Gbit/s, the transmission efficiency reaches up
to 93%.

1.2.4 Powerful QoS

The MA5600T supports prioritization of traffic streams to provide quality of service (QoS) for
different services.
The MA5600T supports the following powerful QoS capabilities:
l

Transmits the voice, data, and network management streams upstream through different
VLANs, thus logically separating traffic of different types

Tags the voice, data, and network management streams with different ToS/DSCP priorities,
thus providing a prioritized forwarding mechanism based on L3

Tags the voice, data, and network management streams with different 802.1p priorities,
thus providing a prioritized forwarding mechanism based on L2

Supports L2L7 traffic classification based on the port, VLAN, MAC address, IP address,
TCP port number or UDP port number

Supports priority control based on the port, MAC address, IP address, TCP port number or
UDP port number

Supports priority mapping and modification based on the ToS field and 802.1p

Supports DSCP differentiated services

Networking Reliability Design

l

The MA5600T supports backup of uplinks in the following two ways:

Backup of uplinks in a board

Uplinks are from the same upstream interface board and work in the load sharing mode.
If one of the links fails, the traffic stream on this uplink is transferred to the other normal
uplink.
In this way, all uplinks mutually back up each other. However, when the upstream
interface board fails, all the uplinks fail.

Backup of uplinks between boards

Uplinks are from different upstream interface boards and work in the load sharing mode.
If one of the links fails, the traffic stream on this uplink is transferred to the other normal
uplink.
In this way, all uplinks mutually back up each other. When an upstream interface board
fails, the traffic stream on this board is transferred to the other upstream interface board.

The MA5600T supports the uplink protection.

When a service outage occurs because of the physical disconnection with the device at the
upper layer, the MA5600T automatically transfers the traffic stream to the secondary link.
Thus, the MA5600T recovers the service rapidly.

Protection of uplinks in a board

Uplinks start from the same upstream interface board and work in the non-load sharing
mode. If one of the links fails, the traffic stream on this uplink is transferred to the other
normal uplink.
In this way, all uplinks are protected. However, when the upstream interface board fails,
all the uplinks fail.

Protection of uplinks between boards

Uplinks are links that start from different upstream interface boards and work in the
non-load sharing mode. If one of the links fails, the traffic stream on this uplink is
transferred to the other normal uplink.
In this way, all uplinks are protected. When an upstream interface board fails, the traffic
stream on this board is transferred to the other upstream interface board.

Product Description

4 Network Applications

Network Description
l

Voice service
After passing the ONT, the VoIP packets reach the MA5600T. The MA5600T then
transmits the packets .

Data service
The PCs are connected to the MA5600T through the ONTs. The PCs are then connected
to the IP network through the BRAS.

Video service
The video traffic is sent to the ONTs in the IPTV or cable television (CATV) mode.

IPTV
In the IPTV mode, the video service is delivered over IP multicast traffic, supplying
users with various programs.
The MA5600T manages the multicast user rights and programs based on IGMP proxy
and controllable multicast. After the users have passed the authentication, the
MA5600T transmits the IGMP protocol packets to the device at the aggregation layer.
The multicast server transmits the video traffic to the MA5600T through the backbone
network and the convergence network. The MA5600T forwards the traffic to the user
terminals based on the authentication results.
At the user end, the STB terminates video signals, performs media conversion, and
controls program switching.

CATV
In the CATV mode, traditional analogue signals of TV programs are transmitted over
the cables.
Through the electrical-to-optical conversion, video streams are converted into
downstream optical waves, and then superposed with downstream optical waves of the
GPON in the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) mode. The superposed waves
are transmitted to the ONT in the downstream direction through an optical fiber. Then
the ONT separates the video signals from the waves, and sends the signals to the TV.
In this way, the video service is realized.

4.2 FTTB Network Application

This topic describes the fiber to the building (FTTB) network application of the MA5600T.

Service Description
The MA5600T supports the FTTB network application. In this application, the MA5600T
connects with ONU in the downstream direction to provide high-bandwidth broadband access
services including voice, data, and video services to buildings where twisted pairs have been
deployed.
In an FTTB network architecture, the ONU is installed inside a building, and it provides services
to the users through twisted pairs.
The FTTB network architecture is suitable for the dense apartments and small enterprise and
institution buildings.

Product Description

4 Network Applications

The MA5600T connects to the MA5606Ts in the downstream direction to provide services
to more users.

The LAN switch is in a tree topology. The LAN switch works independently without mutual
interference. The bandwidth can be flexibly allocated according to the number of users
connected to a LAN switch.

Compared with the digital subscriber line (DSL) network, the FTTB network has the following
advantages:
l

Higher bandwidth and longer transmission distance

In DSL access, the transmission rate is limited by the length of the twisted pair.

Saving investment
The FTTB network is an integration of the FTTH network and the DSL network. For an
FTTB solution, the optical fiber is used for long-reach transmission and the twisted pair is
used for short-reach transmission. This reduces the cost of network investment for carriers.

Good compatibility
The FTTB network is compatible with the existing DSL network.

4.3 TDM Private Line Network Application

This topic describes the TDM private line network application of the MA5600T.

Service Description
The MA5600T supports the TDM private line network application. In the TDMoGEM mode,

Product Description

4 Network Applications

Network Description
In the QinQ application, the user packets transmitted in the backbone network have two layers
of VLAN tags: a public VLAN tag and a private VLAN tag.
l

On the user side

The enterprise users are connected to the MA5600T through the ONU and the traffic is
delivered in the VLAN mode. The users of VLAN 1 and VLAN 2 are connected to the
MA5600T. The MA5600T allocates a public VLAN ID (VLAN 3 with the QinQ attribute)
to the packets, and forwards the packets to the upper layer network.

On the network side

In the backbone network, the packets are transmitted based on the public VLAN ID. After
the packets reach the MA5600T on the other side of the backbone network, the
MA5600T removes the public VLAN tag from the packets, and passes the packets to the
user side device.

In the QinQ application, the transparent transmission of the private VLAN in the public network
is supported. A simple two-layer virtual private network (VPN) channel is provided to realize
the function of transparent transmission of private VLANs and services to the peer end and to
expand the private network.

4.5 VLAN Stacking Application

This topic describes the VLAN stacking application of the MA5600T.

Service Description
The MA5600T supports VLAN stacking to realize VLAN extension and multi-ISP wholesale
service.
l

VLAN extension: This is used to increase the number of VLANs and identify users.

Multi-ISP wholesale service: The upper layer network works in L2 working mode and the
packets are directly transmitted based on the VLAN and the MAC address.

VLAN stacking is similar to QinQ in implementation, but the user packet of VLAN stacking is
encapsulated with two VLAN tags and the user packet of QinQ is encapsulated with one VLAN
tag.

Network Topology

4 Network Applications

Compared with the SDH/ATM private line technologies, the IP return transmission technology
not only offers an easy return transmission solution for base stations, but also helps to greatly
save the cost for base station return transmission.
In the mobile bearer network application, the IP-based return transmission technology is adopted
as a replacement of the TDM-based or ATM-based return transmission technology to realize
integration of fixed and mobile networks at the bearer layer. In this way, the need to maintain
only one network helps to reduce the CapEx and OpEx, thus facilitating evolution to an all-IP
network.

Product Description

4 Network Applications

Network Description
The mobile bearer network application features the following:
l

The base station adopts distributed mode, and provides IP ports and E1 ports.

The base station adopts distributed mode. The voice service is sent upstream through
the E1 ports, and the data service is sent upstream through the IP ports.

The voice service requires small bandwidth, so usually only one or two E1 ports are
required. The data service requires high bandwidth. Hence, the base station adopts IP
ports for data service transmission, thus improving the bandwidth utilization for the
upstream data service.

The IP ports support data access.

The E1 ports provided by the base station support return transmission through PWE3.

For the large number of legacy base stations and the base stations that are presently
under construction, IP uplink connection is not adopted, and only E1 ports are used. For
the base stations in the distributed mode, the voice service is still sent upstream through
the E1 ports.

The E1 ports must support PWE3 to facilitate service bearing over an IP network.

The MA5600T obtains the clock information from the BITS, and sends the clock information
to the downstream mobile base stations through the modem. In this way, clock synchronization
is maintained between the base station, the BSC and the RNC, thus ensuring that the end users
are not affected during a service switchover between the base stations.

5.3.4 Typical Networking Modes

This topic describes the typical networking modes of the N2000 BMS and the MA5600T.

Overview
The N2000 BMS can form a network with the MA5600T through the following:
l

Inband channels

Outband channels

Because both the inband and outband modes have their respective advantages and disadvantages,
these two modes are usually combined in actual applications.

Inband Mode
Inband mode refers to a networking mode for network device management that is implemented
through the service channel provided by the managed devices. In this mode, the network
management interaction information is delivered over the service channel provided by the
managed device.
Figure 5-2 shows the EMS networking in the inband mode.

The advantages of the inband networking are as follows:

l

Flexible networking

Cost-effective, because no additional device is required

The disadvantage of the inband networking is that maintenance tasks cannot be carried out when
the service channel fails.

Outband Mode
The outband mode refers to a networking mode for network device management that is
implemented through other channels, and not through the service channel. In this mode, the
management channel is independent of the service channel.
Figure 5-3 shows the EMS networking in the outband mode.

The advantages of the outband networking are as follows:

l

Channels for device management are more reliable than those in the inband mode.

The N2000 BMS can timely locate the fault in a managed device, and monitor the managed
device in real time.

The disadvantage of the outband networking is that additional devices are required to provide
maintenance channels that are independent of service channels.
