Five social enterprises were chosen from different Rawalpindi - Islamabad.

Interviews were conducted with leaders of the sample social enterprises and other
social enterprises, as well as some donors. Focus group discussions were also held
with staff of the sample social enterprises. Access to social enterprises
documentation was provided and this allowed further investigation of how the
organisations saw their business sustainability.

Growth and change in the NGOs: an overview of each NGO

All the social enterprises were experiencing growth and change in both program
and organisation at the time of research. Table 1 shows a summary of information
about each social enterprise.
ROZEN
Rozan is an Islamabad-based NGO working on issues related to emotional and psychological
health, gender, violence against women and children, and the psychological and reproductive
health of adolescents.
Rozans mission is to work with all people, especially vulnerable groups, to collectively
strive for a society that is violence free, self-aware and accepting of itself and others.
Vulnerability is defined as historically marginalized and powerless groups with special
emphasis on women, youth, children, the poor, and sexual and religious minorities.
Rozan's team consists of psychologists, social workers, volunteers, and supporters. Rozan
was officially registered in December 1998 under the Societies Act of 1860 and was awarded
tax-exemption status in 2005. In 2006, Rozan acquired the prestigious special consultative
status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Rozans approach is holistic, and interventions are framed from a prevention (awarenessraising, mobilization, skills-building), protection (law enforcement, service delivery, and
advocacy) perspective.
All Rozan programmes are structured around one or more of the following three core primary
strategies: awareness raising; psychological support and referral; and capacity building and
training. However, the relative emphasis on each varies from programme to programme
depending upon the needs assessed, emerging opportunities and programmes maturity and
capacity. Two new and distinct strategies are now emerging; these include research and
advocacy.

ROSHNI
Roshni Foundation is registered as a Non-Profit Organization under Society Registration Act XXI of
1860 Govt. of Pakistan. The principal office of Roshni Foundation is located in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
The main objective of Roshni Foundation is to improve the deplorable conditions of Education
(specially women education) and Health in Pakistan. Unfortunately in Pakistan these are the most
neglected areas in our society.

TROCAIRE

Trocaire was established in 1973 and is the official overseas development agency
of the Catholic Church in Ireland. Trocaire currently works in 27 countries across
Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Trocaire's programmes are
focused on five thematic areas: sustainable livelihoods; governance and human
rights; gender equality; HIV and AIDS; and humanitarian preparedness and
response. We envisage a just and peaceful world where people's dignity is
ensured and rights are respected; where basic needs are met and resources are
shared equitably; where people have control over their own lives and those in
power act for the common good. We support communities in the developing
world in their efforts to improve their lives, meet their basic needs and ensure
their human dignity. This support is offered regardless of race, gender, religion or
politics. Trocaire is not an operational agency and we implement our
programmes in and through partnership with local civil society organizations.
Funds are directly transferred to partners from our Regional Office in Cambodia
or from HQ in Ireland. The office in Islamabad supports partner organizations
through a small number of national and international staff by providing
accompaniment and technical expertise. We are committed to supporting local
solutions, building local capacity and ensuring that development interventions
are sustainable. At home in Ireland we raise awareness about the causes of
global poverty and encourage people to campaign for global change as a matter
of justice. Trocaire opened an office in Islamabad in 2007 to accompany local
partners more effectively as well as to understand the context more thoroughly.
More recently, our work has focused on rural livelihoods and womens
empowerment, specifically in Sindh Province in the south and Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in the north west of the country.

BRAC PAKISTAN
BRAC began operations in Pakistan in 2007 through a micro finance program. In
addition to micro finance, we are now running program in health and education.
BRAC is currently serving about 437,465 people in 14 districts of four provinces.
BRAC's micro finance program was launched in 2007 on a small scale in Punjab
and the North West Frontier Province (NWFP). It is now operating with 88 branch
offices, and has 45,011 women borrowers. BRAC considers education a powerful
tool for combating discrimination's, illiteracy and poverty. BRAC started 20 preprimary schools in 2009 in NWFP's Haripur district. The schools now have more
than 600 students, about 61% of them girls. BRAC also initiated a health program
in 2009, with services in Punjab's Sahiwal and Pakpattan districts and NWFP's
Nowshera district. The program trains local health workers and volunteers to
provide basic health care and health education to families and communities.
