From the Pastor

Happy Feast day of the Corpus Christi or the Holy Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus!
I have mentioned it several times in my homily to remember Chapter 6 of Saint Johns Gospel as
regards the biblical basis of the churchs teaching on the Eucharist! As Jesus spoke about eating his
flesh and drinking his blood, the response was less than enthusiastic. How can this man give us
his flesh to eat? (Verse 52). This is a hard saying, who can listen to it? (Verse 60). Jesus did not
run after the deserters saying, Come back! you got me wrong! During the Roman
persecutions, the early Christians were accused of cannibalism. It is because they heard that the
early Christians met weekly to eat flesh and drink human blood. They did not defend themselves
by saying: Wait a minute, its only a symbol! It was Saint Justin who explained the Eucharist to
the Emperor around 155AD: "For we do not receive these things as common bread or common
drink; but as Jesus Christ our Savior being incarnate by God's word took flesh and blood for our
salvation, so also we have been taught that the food consecrated by the word of prayer which
comes from him . . . is the flesh and blood of that incarnate Jesus. In the Middle Ages, St.
Thomas Aquinas offered the classic explanation of transubstantiation: the appearances of bread
and wine stay the same, but the very essence of these realities, which cant be viewed by a
microscope, is totally transformed. What starts as bread and wine becomes Christs body and
blood. But why did Jesus arrange for this transformation of bread and wine? It is because He
intended another kind of transformation. The bread and wine are transformed into the Body and
Blood of Christ which are, in turn, meant to transform us. We heard the phrase: you are what
you eat. Christ desires us to be transformed from imperfect individuals into the Body of Christ,
come to full stature. Our non-Catholic Christian brethren speak often of an intimate, personal
relationship with Jesus. There is nothing more personal and intimate than the Eucharist we receive
at communion! We receive the Lords body into our physical body that we may become Him
whom we receive! This awesome gift, though we celebrate it as often as we come to mass, deserves
its own feast. We should be grateful that back in the days of Thomas Aquinas and St. Francis of
Assisi, Pope Urban IV instituted the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1264.

Congratulations and welcome to our Catholic community Elizabeth Bridget Graham, daughter
of Doug and Kristen Graham of Saint Michael in Girard who receives the sacrament of baptism
this Sunday! Please pray for the child and the Graham family!

You will find an insert in this weekends bulletin, the picture and article about Fr. Max Biltz, our
incoming pastor this July 1st. This was taken from St. Francis of Assisi Parishs website. If plans
push through, Bishop Kemme will be coming to St. Michael at the 10 AM mass for the installation
of the new Pastor on July 12! Mark your calendar! Once more I know it is not easy to all of us to
undergo all these changes. As I pray for all of you, please include him and me and all the priests
affected by the changes in your prayers!

God bless you! Fr. Roger

POPE FRANCIS ENVIRONMENTAL ENCYCLICAL

Pope Francis is gearing up to release his Papal Encyclical on the
environment this summer and will make the humanitarian and
spiritual case for acting on climate change. The much-anticipated
teaching document will be the first from a pope to be devoted
entirely on creation and human relationship with it. The
encyclical is likely to reference such themes as: the possible causes
of global warming; the human toll on climate change; the need to
repair our relationship with the natural world; the call to view
environmental advocacy as an opportunity for dialogue and
evangelization; and a gospel call to peoples of all faiths to make
lifestyle choices to reduce the existential threat to human beings
from anthropogenic climate change. Pope Francis is calling on the
global faith community to discern, not simply on whether our
lifestyles are promoting care for creation, but also whether our
social, economic, and political choices protect the interests of the
poorest among us.
