PART A (ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE)

QUESTION 1

Explain the following terms:

i) Sound Power,
ii) Sound Pressure,
iii) Sound Intensity,
iv) Threshold of pain,
v) Threshold of hearing

QUESTION 2

a) The intensity of a point sound measured at a distance of 6m from the source is 6m from
the source is 3.4 x 10'6 W/m2.

i) Calculate the intensity of the sound (W/m2) at a distance 24m from the source,
ii) Calculate the decibel change between two positions.

b) The materials and devices used in our building for the purpose of absorbing sound can
be classified into three main types. Briefly explain these three types of sound
absorption.

QUESTION 3

a) Explain the term Reverberation Time (Rt) and list down factors influencing the Rt
calculations.
(5 marks)

a) List down four (4) points to be considered when designing construction to achieve
adequate sound insulation of building elements.
(10 marks)

b) A rectangular hall with floor dimensions 50m x 25m x 5m height has a reverberation
time of 1.5 second at 500 hertz. In order to achieve the required reverberation time of
1.0 second, carpet was recommended on the floor. Given A = 0.16VRt"1 and the
absorption coefficient of carpet at 500 hertz is 0.35, calculate the area of carpet
required.

PART B (BUILDING MATERIALS)

QUESTION 1

You have been selected to execute renovation works to an Old School Hall which is to be
converted into Multi purpose use in the shortest time possible. The existing finishes of the
hall is as follows:-

Floor: Cement render


Internal/ External wall: Normal plaster
Roof Structure/ finish: Timber /asbestos
Ceiling: None

i) Propose a suitable floor finish for indoor sport activities and public areas. List the
selection criteria of the material, merit and demerits of the material.
(8 marks)

ii) To adapt to the existing roof structure with 10° slope, propose a roofing material which is
suitable and steps to be taken to overcome the climatic condition.
(7 marks)

iii) Stone have been selected for exterior wall finish. Explain the problem normally
associated with the laying of the stone and how do you overcome it.
(10 marks)

a) Apart from Aesthetic, describe two other functions of floor finishes


(4 marks)

b) Classification of paint depends upon its functions. Describe fully the functions and
properties of paint.

c) Explain the purpose of incorporating fibres in the following fibre composite material and
discuss their properties and applications in the construction industry.

i) Glass Reinforced Cement (GRC)

ii) Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete (SFRC)
