IMPACT:

WHY THE GLOBAL INVESTIGATIVE

JOURNALISM CONFERENCES MATTER

The most outstanding experience in my professional career.

Rosemary Nwaebuni, POINTER newspaper (Nigeria)

Attending the Global Investigative Journalism Conference has been the most
outstanding experience in my professional career. Of immense interest to me
were the recommendations by veteran journalists and their encouragement on
moving this profession forward. The conference afforded me the opportunity to
meet face to face with professionals who have made their mark in journalism
practice. I was very impressed with the number of women involved.

The meetings in Rio helped me out of darkness, and I am working to

share the experiences.

Allen Yero Embalo, Journalists Association of Guinea Bissau

A meeting of journalists from various horizons, with different experiences, is

always an advantage. We shared for five days our different experiences and
knowledge in the field. We learned from each other. I am a journalist who comes
from a little known country. But the meetings in Rio helped me out of darkness,
to talk about my country and the difficulties that journalists there face every day. I am very grateful to
the organizers of this meeting and am working to share the experiences in my home country gained
from this important conference.

GIJC13 gave me the zeal to tell investigative stories, and the tools
to undertake and carry out successful investigative work.

Kassim Mohamed, Kenya Television Network (Kenya)

Attending the Global Investigative Journalism Conference of 2013 that was
held in Rio, Brazil, gave me an even greater confidence to pursue investigative
journalism. I say this because I met award-winning, inspirational journalists
who have done some of the most amazing investigative work ever published or broadcast. This gave me
the zeal to tell investigative stories. GIJC 2013 helped me gather a wide array of contacts and the
conference was also a learning curve. I attended computer assisted reporting classes plus data
journalism lessons. I would say GIJC 2013 gave me the necessary tools to undertake and carryout
successful investigative work.

Really valuable especially about extractive industries, the media
business model, and fundraising.

Eric Mwamba, Wealth Magazine (DRC)

The GIJC 2013 was really valuable to improve my own network on the ground
of investigative journalism especially about extractive industries and media
business model and fundraising. The GIJC 2013 also increased my skills in online
research and computer tools. The immediate outcome after Rio is that I'm currently busy to launch my
own multimedia magazine to investigate business and VIP people beyond in the DR Congo.

Wonderful and unforgettable The experience really helped in

reshaping my career.

Aamir Latif, Global Post (Pakistan)

The best thing I learned at the Global Investigative Journalism Conference was how
to work and save yourself in a country like Pakistan, where the right to information
means nothing. Senior investigative journalists, at official sessions and on the
sidelines, told junior reporters how to tackle uncooperative government and security officialsand how
to save ourselves from crossing the RED LINES. Meeting and learning from veteran investigative
reporters was wonderful and unforgettable. The experience really helped in reshaping my career as an
investigative reporter, especially how to convert a simple idea into a good investigative storynot spiced
up with exaggeration but supported by the sinews of facts and figures, proper quotes, and selection of
appropriate analysts.

All of our Arab fellows have returned home saying they felt
more confident in their mission to expose issues of importance to their
communities.

Rana Sabbagh, Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism (Jordan)

All of our Arab fellows who have attended Global Investigative Journalism
Conferences have returned home saying they felt more confident in their mission
to expose issues of importance to their communities for the benefit of accountability, greater social
justice, and transparency. They have found in these conferences rich professional platforms for
exchanging tools of the trade with colleagues from developed countries where investigative journalism
has developed roots and traditions. They have been exposed to cutting-edge techniques that have
enriched their own experiences and allowed them to use new tools as they try to expose and document
the truth in politically-hostile and socially-conservative societies.

Within hours of the documents being found, 5 reporters who

participated in GIJC13 met on the banks of the Dnieper to make real
what they might never have even dreamed of.

Oleg Khomenok, YanukovychLeaks/SCOOP (Ukraine)

Within 3 hours of the [Yanukovych] documents being found, 5 reporters who
participated in GIJC13 in Rio met on the banks of the Dnieper to make real what they might never have
even dreamed of. Now we have thousands of pieces of real evidence that may point to corruption,
money laundering and other crimes The Global Investigative Journalism Conference became an
inspiring event for reporters from post-Soviet countries. The sharing of experiences and best practices
was vital for Ukrainian participants, who had the opportunity to discover new investigative reporting
methods and tools.

It is the collective energy of groups like this that can expose

corruption on a global scale.

Priya Rajasekar, Asian College of Journalism (India)

Apart from the quality of discussion and training, which was excellent, what
meant the most was meeting so many people with the single-minded
mission to bring about change and uncover people and systems that
impeded this. It is the collective energy of groups like this that can expose corruption and inequalities on
a global scale.

Enormously helpful.

Syed Nazakat, Centre for Investigative Journalism (India)

(The Global Conference) not only serves as an important training vehicle for
journalists but it also provides excellent platform to them to learn and
share reporting skills, new storytelling strategies and at the same time it brings
journalists together Enormously helpful.

The most fantastic journalism event Ive been to.

Jonathan Stock, Der Spiegel (Germany)

Its the most fantastic journalism event Ive ever been to. For a young journalist, its a
cheap and practical opportunity to develop international research skills.

It helped improve my journalism skills a great deal.

Bopha Phorn, freelance (Cambodia)
The conference on Uncovering Asia is one of the best conferences I have ever
attended. It helped improve my journalism skills a great deal, particularly
investigation skills. I wish and hope that GIJN keeps providing such a crucial
conference from time to time.

One of the greatest opportunities to enrich our careers.

Ignacio Rodrguez Reyna, Emeequis Magazine (Mexico)

There is no doubt that the GIJC 2013 had been one of the greatest
opportunities to enrich our professional careers with the exchange of ideas,
visions, techniques, and purposes. It was a great conference.

If you ever lose your faith, go to a GIJN conference.

Pavla Holcova, Czech Centre for Investigative Journalism (Czech
Republic)

"If you would ever lose your faith in investigative journalism, go to a
GIJN conference. Great people, great courage, great stories and most
amazingly: sharing."

The most important event of journalists that I`ve attended in 30

years of work.

Rosemri Laurindo, Methodist University of Sao Paulo (Brazil)
