A FEW WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to Options! By choosing to enroll your child in our program you have
increased your childs ability to gain the social and cognitive skills necessary to be
successful in kindergarten and increased the likelihood that he/she will graduate from high
school and attend college. Research shows over and over again that children who have
attended a high quality preschool program achieve more in school and life. I commend you
on your decision and thank you for choosing Options.
Our program is designed to provide a pre-kindergarten experience to children before
entering elementary school. Your experience with us will not only strengthen and develop
the skills your child needs to succeed in kindergarten, but will also provide a multitude of
opportunities for you to become an active participant in your childs education.
For the next 9 months, you have entrusted us with your child with the expectation
that he/she will receive the best preschool experience possible. Together we will
accomplish this. Here at Options, we see you as a vital partner in your childs learning
experience, and we strive to build a strong partnership with you in order to guarantee your
childs success.
The purpose of this handbook is to inform you about our program, acquaint you with
the requirements and expectations of our program, and establish open lines of
communication. Many of the requirements are established by our funding sources. Please
take the time to read this entire handbook.
In addition to our preschool program, Options also offers a wide variety of programs
for families. If you are in need of further support, please contact our office so that we can
help you.
I hope you and your child create fond and warm memories with us, and that the
relationships you build with our staff and other parents will offer you the support needed to
conquer todays parenting challenges.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
OUR AGENCYS MISSION AND VISION
Options mission is to be a leader in preparing children and supporting families for life
success through innovative, quality child development programs. Our vision is that all
children achieve their potential.
OUR DIVISIONS MISSION
The mission of our division is to prepare preschoolers and their families for
kindergarten and make the transition to elementary school smooth and successful. We
achieve this mission by providing a high quality, developmentally, educational program
which meets the needs of the whole child and by forming collaborative partnerships with
schools and community institutions.
STAFF
Our staff are highly qualified and committed to providing a quality program for not
only our children, but also the families who are enrolled in our program. All of our Site
Director/Teachers are certified in Pediatric First Aid and CPR and hold a Site Supervisor
Permit granted by the State of California Teacher Credentialing Commission, which
requires the equivalent of an AA degree in Early Childhood Education. Each class also has
one trained Associate Teacher who has college training in Early Childhood Education and
experience working with children. Some classes have an additional Aide who has
completed their first class in Early Childhood Education.
All site staff are fingerprinted and receive a Criminal Record Clearance through the
Department of Justice and a Child Abuse Index Clearance through Community Care
Licensing.
All of our staff are required by law to report any suspected cases of child abuse or
neglect.
Through on-going training, our staff are not only trained on the implementation of our
High/Scope and Options-Pre-K Literacy Curriculum but also on pertinent topics that
address program needs, improve program quality and develop staff professionalism.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Options is committed to providing a high quality pre-kindergarten experience in an
environment that is designed to meet the needs of each child, both educationally and
developmentally. We strive to strengthen, encourage, and develop skills needed to
guarantee each childs success in school. We accomplish this through our curriculum,
highly professional, well-trained staff, and our partnership with parents/guardians and
elementary schools.
Our program is a day program offering families a choice of an AM session or PM
session. Our class size is 24, and we maintain an adult to child ratio of 1:8.

CURRICULUM
The curriculum implemented in our preschool program is High/Scope. This
curriculum focuses on:
The development of the whole child through the creation of a learning

environment that offers hands-on activities with real life materials.
The development of independence, problem-solving and confidence which

are imperative to success in school and life.
The development of relationships with adults and peers through positive

interactions that facilitate learning and support active learning.
Essential to the success of High/Scope is the creation of the learning environment.

Our environment is set up so that children have a variety of centers/interest areas (Art
Area, Block Area, Quiet Area, Science Area, House Area, and Computer Area) to work in
every day. These areas are developed intentionally with very specific goals in mind which
are based upon curriculum and learning objectives, daily child observations, and child
assessments. Items such as dress up clothes, blocks, live animals, anatomically correct
dolls, paint, writing utensils/materials, puzzles, and books are only a few examples of the
types of educational materials your child will be encouraged to explore daily.
In addition to designing a well-developed learning environment, our staff plan daily
activities for children that focus on specific learning objectives. Activities that promote and
enhance childrens development are planned each day during small and large group time.
You can review these activities on the Lesson Plan which is posted on the Parent Board
daily.
Our High/Scope curriculum is supplemented with our Options-Pre-K Literacy
curriculum which was developed through a grant received by First 5 LA. This curriculum
focuses specifically on developing pre-literacy skills. Through the use of High/Scope and
our Pre-K Literacy curriculum, children who participate in our program will be able to enter
kindergarten prepared and ready for the next step in learning to read.
CHILD ASSESSMENT
Our program assesses each child 60 days after their first day of enrollment and then
again in spring. We utilize the Department of Educations Desired Results Developmental
Profile (DRDP) which identifies specific skills for your child to be assessed on. Based upon
your childs assessment and the class overall assessment, our staff plan activities that
assist children in their growth and development. At your parent conference, your childs
teacher will share this assessment with you and together you will set goals to best prepare
your child for kindergarten.
KINDERGARTEN PREPAREDNESS
Options recognizes that we are the first school experience for many of our children,
and our job is to make sure each child develops the skills necessary to be successful in
elementary school.
Our staff communicate on an on-going basis with principals and kindergarten
teachers at the elementary school regarding their expectations of students and strive to
assist our children in meeting these expectations where and when appropriate.
We try to make the transition between preschool and kindergarten as easy and
smooth as possible. Our staff plan field trips to the kindergarten class and have
kindergarten teachers and principals visit our class whenever possible. At the end of the
school year an assessment will be completed and sent to your childs school so that his/her
kindergarten teacher can see how prepared your child is for school.
MEALS
By participating in the California Adult and Child Care Food Program, Options is able
to provide lunch to all children enrolled in our program.
A 6-week cycle menu, which is posted at each site, has been developed to meet the
nutritional needs of our children and follows the specific meal pattern requirements set by
the Department of Nutrition Services. We offer a variety of child friendly foods from
different cultures.
It is our goal to offer children food they are familiar with and expose them to foods
from other cultures. Our meals are served family style, meaning children are encouraged
to serve themselves and clean up after themselves.
If your child has allergies to a specific food, or cannot eat a specific food due to a
religious conviction or dietary restriction, you may request an alternative meal. Please
complete a Request for an Alternative Meal form which can be obtained from our site staff.
In accordance with federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy,
this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national

FIELD TRIPS
Our staff plan field trips in order to enhance our childrens learning experiences.
Staff may plan to go on walking field trips to local parks or establishments. When budgetary
monies are available, staff may plan a bus trip to a childrens museum or concert, or have a
special guest come to the site such as a marionette show or reptile show. These field trips
are free to our children. We do ask for parent volunteers and are able to cover the costs for
them. During field trips parent volunteers are expected to help staff with supervision and
may not bring siblings, or purchase souvenirs or food at the establishment. We consider
this a class day, and the expectations we have of our volunteers remain the same. For bus
trips, we try to make sure that our parent volunteers are able to go on the bus, but
sometimes room is not available, and parents/guardians are asked to carpool with each
other to the destination. If you would like to volunteer to attend your childs field trip, please
speak with your childs teacher so that arrangements can be made.
If you choose for your child not to attend the field trip, then your child will not be able
to attend class that day since no staff will be available to provide care.
SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS
At Options, we strive to be sensitive to all of our families in terms of holidays,
birthdays, and other special events. In our diverse world, celebrations are not only fun and
exciting but also help make cultures/traditions real to children. We understand that some
families have beliefs that prevent them from participating. Your childs teacher will do
his/her best to meet the needs of all of the families in your childs class.
Birthdays are a very important event to preschoolers. Please check with your childs
teacher regarding how she/he has decided this special day can be celebrated at school.
End of school year celebrations are encouraged. However, cap and gown
graduations are not allowed. Formal cap and gown events can pose a financial hardship to
our families.
RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION
Options does not provide religious instruction or worship for children enrolled in our
program.
DISCIPLINE
For many of our children this is their first experience at school. Helping children learn
appropriate social skills is a key objective in our program. Staff create an environment with
consistent rules that are age appropriate and supportive of choices. Staff strive to foresee
and prevent conflicts that may arise. However when they do, staff focus on teaching
children how to express themselves verbally to resolve it. Each situation is seen as a
teachable moment, and a great deal of time and effort is spent with each child to facilitate
the development of problem solving skills.
Preschool children are learning how to identify and control their emotions. This
process can be very frustrating for some children, and therefore, they may resort to hitting,

biting, or other inappropriate behavior. Our staff work with each individual child to develop
skills necessary to appropriately communicate their needs, and work with others
cooperatively, this takes time. Parents/guardians are asked for their support, assistance,
and patience in this process. Our goal with all of the children in our program is that they
learn to successfully and positively resolve conflicts. Options does not practice corporal
punishment with our children.
PROGRAM CLOSURES
Our program will be closed on Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after
Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, and may close
for winter break in December, and spring break in March/April. In addition to the regularly
scheduled holidays, we also close classes for staff training and staff planning time. Please
look for the announcements regarding the specific closure dates.
SPECIAL NEEDS POLICY
Children with special needs may be enrolled in the center upon the collaborative
planning and agreement between the family and program administrator. Each individual
childs unique needs will be considered on a child-by-child basis. To support inclusion,
specific adaptations and logical accommodations will be examined and reasonable
alternatives explored. Modifications to policies and procedures can be made if they do not
fundamentally alter the nature of the program and services the center provides or adversely
affect the operation of the center. Services will be offered in the most integrated setting
appropriate to the needs of the child.
STUDENT INJURIES
If your child becomes injured during class time, your childs teacher will inform you
either at the time you pick up your child or by a phone call depending upon the severity of
the injury. In addition, you should receive a Minor Injury Report regarding the injury.
Options provides a school time insurance plan for each child enrolled in our
program. The insurance is meant to supplement existing medical insurance or provide sole
medical insurance for children without any insurance in the event of an injury which occurs
while school is in session or at a school sponsored event. In the event of an injury requiring
medical attention, please speak with our staff so that they can share with you how to
access this insurance plan.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
In order to prepare our children for emergencies, once a month staff practice fire
drills and earthquake drills. On the Parent Board you will be able to see documentation
regarding these monthly drills. In the event of an emergency, each site is equipped with an
emergency pack for each child which will sustain them for 72 hours.
PARENT/GUARDIAN REQUIREMENTS:
ITEMS FROM HOME
We ask for your cooperation in not sending personal items to the sites unless the
staff have designated a sharing day or the item is part of a school project. If your child has
a special toy or personal item he/she would like to bring to share with the other children and
staff, please speak to the staff in advance. Neither Options nor our staff are responsible for
lost or broken toys brought to the site.
CLOTHING
Your child will get dirty! So please send them in clothing they can actively play in,
and shoes that fit securely on his/her feet. If you would like to leave a change of clothes at
school for your child, please speak with your childs teacher to discuss if it is necessary.
Childrens cubbies are shared between AM and PM classes so storage is very limited at
school. Please label all clothing.
COMMUNICATION
Communication between home and school is essential to the success of our
program. In addition to communicating with you informally on a daily basis, our staff will
arrange two conferences during the school year. These conferences will allow staff to
share information with you concerning your childs social/emotional, intellectual, and
physical development, and set goals with you to further the development of your child and
family. If you would like information on how your child is doing in the class at other times,
please speak directly with staff and request a conference appointment.
Each class has a Parent Board. Please check the board daily for important
information concerning the class or announcements of meetings or services you would
benefit from.
NOTIFICATION OF CHANGE
It is your responsibility to inform the site staff as well as our main office within ten
(10) days of any change in your home or work address, home or work telephone numbers,
or emergency phone numbers.
PARENT MEETINGS
Once a month our staff will conduct a parent meeting. You will receive notification of
the date and time of the meeting. At this meeting staff will share pertinent information about
your childs class. In addition, during these meetings valuable information regarding a
variety of topics such as nutrition, health, and child development issues will be offered as
part of our parent education program. Topics are chosen based upon the interests of
parents/guardians so that they are meaningful and personal. Please make sure you attend
each meeting.
Parents/guardians will also be asked to elect a representative from the class to
participate in our programs Parent Advisory Committee. The Parent Advisory Committee is

composed of one representative from each preschool class in our division. Members meet
three times a year with program administration advising on program improvement in order
to maintain the high quality of our program.
PARENT VOLUNTEERING
You play a key role in your childs education, and Options sees you as part of our
teaching team. By volunteering in your childs class you are able to participate in your
childs learning and enrich their experience. We have developed a Parent Volunteer
Handbook to help guide you through the day so that it is as rewarding to you as it is to your
child.
We expect parents/guardians to volunteer in the classroom monthly. A sign-up sheet
will be available each month so that you can sign up for the day(s) that best fit your
schedule. Your volunteering helps our program maintain an adult to child ratio of 1:8 as
required by our funding source. It is vital that when you sign up to volunteer that you mark
your calendar so you dont forget. We count on you being there.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible to receive California State Preschool services, the Department of
Education, Child Development Division mandates the following:
a. Children meet the age requirement established for three and four year olds.
b. Families meet one of the following
1. Receive cash aid
2. Are homeless
3. Has a child at risk of abuse, neglect, or exploitation or receiving child
protective services through the county welfare department
4. Meet income eligibility requirements established by the Department.
c. Live in California
ADMISSION PRIORITIES
The Department of Education, Child Development Division mandates that our
program serve low income families who are eligible for services in the following priority:
a. Age eligible children receiving child protective services or who are at risk of being
abused, neglected, or exploited.
b. Age eligible children four year olds beginning with families with the lowest
income.
c. Age eligible three year olds beginning with families with the lowest income.
In addition, Options requires that all children must be fully toilet trained and able to
take care of their own toileting needs without adult assistance.

Our program does not give priority to children with identified special needs. All
families must qualify with the above stated priorities. Exceptions to this requirement can
only be made as per our Special Needs Policy.
PARENT FEES
Families receiving State Preschool services shall be assessed a family fee based
upon their adjusted monthly family income, family size, and children enrolled in other
programs that have been assessed a family fee. The amount of the family fee is based
upon the family fee schedule established by the Department of Education, Child
Development Division. All families who are assessed a fee will be required to sign a
Family Fee Agreement. Families who receive child care and development services from
another provider may qualify to receive credit for these payments. Qualifying families must
sign a Sibling Receipt Agreement.
No other fees are charged to families, and at no time should you be asked to pay for
programmatic services such as field trips, classroom supplies, cleaning supplies, or
someone to handle parent volunteering. If you are asked to pay for items by your childs
teacher, the Parent Advisory Representative, or other program staff or parents, please
inform the supervisor of the site, Program Supervisor or Division Director as soon as
possible. They can be reached at the main office in the City of Industry.
FRAUD/DECEIT POLICY
Our program is a state subsidized program, and all families must qualify according to
regulations specified by the state of California. Therefore, all information received from you
at the time of enrollment, is subject to verification to ensure that fraud and deceit have not
been presented in order to qualify for services. At the time of enrollment you received a
copy of our agencys Fraud/Deceit Policy. If Options determines that fraudulent information
has been presented in any way, services may be terminated with an issuance of a Notice of
Action (NOA) and further legal action may be taken.
CLIENT RIGHTS TO DUE PROCESS
If you disagree with an action Options State Preschool is taking as stated on a
Notice of Action, you may appeal the intended action. Instructions on how to appeal a
Notice of Action (NOA) is specified on the back of the form and must be adhered to.
PARENTAL ACCESS & COURT ORDERS
Options assures that the parents/guardians of children enrolled in our program have
unlimited access to their child. For some families accessibility to their child is restricted
when a family has a court order for custody and/or a restraining order. If this applies to you
and your family, you are asked to give Options a copy so that our staff can adhere to the
court order.
Without legal documentation, our program is unable to prohibit a parent
access to their child.

SIGNING IN
Every day your child attends, he/she must be signed in and signed out. By law, the
person responsible for signing in and out must sign their full name and write the exact time
of arrival and departure. Signing in ahead of time or for a day your child was not in
attendance is not permitted.
Only adults 18 years and older may be authorized to pick up your child. The ONLY
exception is if the minor is the parent of the child.
EMERGENCY CARDS
Your childs safety is very important to us. One way we assure their safety is by only
releasing your child to the parents/guardians or persons authorized by you on the
emergency card. Therefore, it is very important to keep your childs emergency card
updated. Options will not make exceptions to this policy.
When someone other than yourself is picking up your child, please make sure you
inform our staff. Our staff will check the emergency card to make sure the person is listed.
If the person is not listed, you will need to add them by writing their name and phone
number on the card or by writing a note to be attached to your childs emergency card. This
cannot be done over the phone. Please prepare the individual who will be picking-up
your child that he/she will need to show identification to our staff verifying who they
are. This is a safety precaution. It is important to us that we only release your child into the
care of individuals authorized by you in writing.
In addition, please make sure you have informed the individuals listed on the
emergency card that you have authorized them to pick up your child. If an emergency
arises with your child and we cannot reach you, we will call them and expect them to come
and pick up your child.
Please remember that only adults 18 years and older may be authorized to pick up
your child. The ONLY exception is if the minor is the parent of the child.
CLASS TIME POLICY
Our program is a 3 hour program. Children are either enrolled in our AM class or
our PM class. You are expected to arrive to class on time and pick up your child on time. If
your child arrives late to school or is picked up late excessively, he/she may be dropped
from the program.
Arriving to school on time is very important. When your child arrives late, he/she has
missed learning opportunities that our staff have planned. In addition, his/her arrival
disrupts class since our staff stop what they are doing to greet each child and parent.
Please respect your childs learning and the learning of others by arriving to school on time.
Picking up on time is just as important. When class is over, our staff have a very
short time to clean up the classroom and plan for the following day. When children are still

there, these tasks cannot be completed. Please allow our staff the time they need to get
their work done for your childs education.
If your child is not picked up on time and emergency contacts cannot be reached to
pick up your child, the local police may be called and your child may be released into their
custody or Child Protective Services.
ABSENCES
Your childs attendance is extremely important to his/her learning. However, we
understand that there will be days when your child is sick, or there is an emergency that
prevents him/her from coming to school. We ask that when your child is absent, you call
your childs teacher.
The state requires that our program determines if an absence is excused or
unexcused. In order to do this, our staff will be asking you the reason for your childs
absence. This must be done whether your child was absent due to illness, vacation or
medical appointment so that we can determine if the absence is excused or unexcused for
state reporting purposes.
Every child is entitled to 10 days of absences considered to be in the best interest
of the child. Please refer to your copy of the Attendance Policy received at time of
enrollment.
A child who is absent excessively due to reasons other than illness or in the best
interest of the child can be terminated from the program.
If circumstances arise in which you decide your child will no longer attend our
program, we ask that you notify our main office as soon as possible at (626) 854-3449.
WELLNESS PRACTICES
Health Checks:
Children learn best when they are healthy. Please do not send your child to school if
he/she is sick. Our staff will do an informal health check daily. A child will not be accepted
into the program if he/she has non-clear nasal discharge, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach
ache, ear ache, swollen glands, fever over 100, strong cough, watery/pink eyes,
complaints of body aches or demonstrates that he/she cannot participate in the program for
that day.
Illnesses:
If your child becomes ill at the center, you will be called to come pick him/her up. If
you are not available, staff will call individuals listed on the emergency card. Please make
sure that the information on your childs emergency card is up to date.
Options has very stringent policies regarding communicable diseases (chicken pox,
measles, scarlet fever, etc.) and lice, so that children are protected as much as possible. If

your child contracts a disease that is contagious, please make sure you inform our staff.
Your child will need a Dr.s note in order to return to class if they contracted a contagious
disease. The only exception is cases of lice. A child must be nit free in order to return to
school. Our staff will alert the other parents of the communicable disease and what
symptoms to look for but will protect your childs confidentiality. We strongly recommend
that your child be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.
Allergies:
If your child has any allergies, please make sure that you have indicated this on your
childs health history. If your child has a food allergy, please speak with your childs
teacher. If an alternative meal needs to be arranged for your child due to his/her food
allergy, your childs teacher can help you make these arrangements.
Medications:
If your child needs to take medication while at school, you will need to complete a
Medication form specifying the name of the medication, dosage, how it is to be
administered and if it should be refrigerated. Only medication prescribed by a physician will
be administered. No over-the-counter medication can be given without a note from your
childs doctor. All medication must have a pharmacy label with your childs name on it and
safety cap. If your child requires an inhaler, please speak with your childs teacher since
special release forms must be completed by you.
CLIENT NON-ADMITTANCE/TERMINATION POLICY
Options has a commitment to serving eligible families in our programs. However, in
a limited number of circumstances, it may be impossible for Options to offer or continue to
provide services to particular families.
The decision to not accept an applicant for care, not to admit a family, or to
terminate services to a family will be made by the Division Director of the program involved,
and the parties will be notified in writing of the decision. Please review your copy of our
agencys Termination Policy that you received at the time of enrollment. Parents may
request a copy of this policy by calling our office at (626) 854-3449.
NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY
Options- A Child Care and Human Services Agency is a private non-profit, equal
opportunity agency offering child care services to families regardless of sex, sexual
orientation, gender, ethnic group identification, race, ancestry, national origin, religion,
color, mental or physical disability, or age, or on the basis of a persons association with a
person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics.
In addition, Options strives to create a harassment (sexual and non-sexual) free
environment, and will take appropriate action(s) to maintain it.
To file a complaint regarding discrimination or harassment, clients must follow our
Uniform Complaint Policy available to them through our site staff, main office, or corporate
office.

UNIFORM COMPLAINT POLICY

Our clients have the right to file a complaint or grievance regarding alleged unlawful
discrimination or alleged violations of federal or state laws or regulations pertaining to
activities or deficiencies of program. To file a complaint or grievance Options Uniform
Complaint Procedure is to be followed. Our clients may request a copy from their childs
teacher, the State Preschool office at (626) 854-3449 or Options Corporate office at (626)
967-7848.

Bienvenidos a Options! Al elegir que su nio/a asista a nuestro programa usted ha
aumentado la capacidad de su nio/a en desarrollar las habilidades sociales y cognitivas
necesarias para ser exitoso en el kinder y ha aumentado la probabilidad de que su nio/a
se grade de la escuela secundaria y atienda el colegio. Estudios siguen demostrando que
los nios que han atendido un programa preescolar de alta calidad logran ms en la
escuela y en la vida. Le alabo en su decisin y le agradezco por eligir nuestro programa de
Options.
Nuestro programa es diseado para proveer experiencias de pre-kinder a los nios
antes de entrar a la escuela primaria. Su experiencia con nosotros no slo fortalecer y
desarrollara las habilidades que su nio/a necesita para tener xito en el kinder, sino
tambin proveer multiples oportunidades para que usted sea un participante activo en la
educacin de su nio/a.
En los prximos 9 meses y medio, usted nos ha confiado a su nio/a con la
expectativa que el/ella recibir la mejor experiencia preescolar posible. Juntos lograremos
esto. Aqu en el programa de Options, lo vemos como socio vital en la experiencia del
aprendizaje de su nio, y nos esforzamos en construir una asociacin con usted para
garantizar el xito de su nio/a.
El propsito de este manual es para informarle sobre nuestro programa, explicar los
requisitos y las expectativas de nuestro programa, y establecer comunicacin. Muchos de
los requisitos son establecidos por nuestra fuente de financiamiento. Por favor tome el

este manual.
Adicionalmente a nuestro programa preescolar, Options tambin ofrece una
variedad de programas para las familias. Si usted necesita ayuda adicional, por favor

DESCRIPCIN DEL PROGRAMA:

VISIN Y MISIN DE NUESTRA AGENCIA
La misin de Options, es ser un lder en la preparacin de los nios apoyando a las
familias para el xito en la vida a travs de innovativo y calificado, programas de Desarrollo
Infantil. Nuestra visin es que todos los nios alcancen su potencial. Enfatizamos la
relacin personal entre los miembros del personal y el cliente como la llave para el
crecimiento individual.
MISIN DE NUESTRA DIVISIN
La misin nuestra divisin es preparar a los nios en edad preescolar y a sus familias para
el kinder y hacer la transicin a la escuela primaria de una manera suave y exitosa. Para
alcanzar esta misin proveemos un programa de alta calidad educacional y de desarrollo
de acuerdo a las necesidades del nio, formando una relacin colaborativa con las
escuelas e instituciones de la comunidad.
PERSONAL
Nuestro personal esta altamente capacitado y comprometido para proveer un programa de
calidad no solo para nuestros nios sino tambin para las familias quienes estn
matriculados en nuestro programa. Nuestras Directoras/Maestras estn certificadas en
Primeros Auxilios Peditricos y CPR y mantienen un permiso concedido por la Comisin
de Credenciales para Maestros del Estado de California que requiere el equivalente de un
grado de asociado licenciatura en Educacin Infantil Temprana. Cada centro tambin tiene
un Maestro/a Asociado que ha recibido entrenamiento del colegio en la educacin infantil
temprana y tienen experiencia y experiencia de trabajo con nios. Algunos salones de
clase tienen una Asistente adicional que ha completado la primera clase del colegio en la
educacin infantil temprana .
A todo el personal del establecimiento se les toma las huellas digitales y se hace
esclarecimiento de sus Antecedentes Penales con el Departamento de Justicia y
esclarecimiento de la Lista Central de Personas Con Antecedentes De Abuso de Nios a
traves de Licencia de Cuidadados de la Comunidad.
La ley requiere que nuestro personal reporte el abuso de nios de cual tengan
conocimiento o una sospecha.
Con el entrenamiento continuo, nuestro personal no solamente recibe entrenamiento en la
implementacin del plan de estudios referido como de Altas/Posibilidades (High Scope) y
plan de lectura Pre-K (Pre-K Literacy) pero tambin recibe entrenamiento con respecto a
los asuntos pertinentes que tratan con las necesidades del programa, mejorar la calidad
del programa, y desarrollo profesional del personal.
DESCRIPCIN DEL PROGRAMA
El Programa de Options, esta comprometido para proveer experiencias preescolares de alta
calidad en un ambiente diseado para satisfacer la necesidades de cada nio, tanto en la
educacin como en el desarrollo. Nos esforzamos por fortalecer, animar y desarrollar las
habilidades necesarias que garanticen el xito de cada nio en la escuela. Nosotros
logramos esto a travs de nuestro plan de estudio, personal profesionalmente calificado,
bien entrenado y nuestra relacin con los padres y escuelas primarias.
Nuestro programa es un programa de da y ofrecemos a las familias escoger entre el
horario de la maana o en la sesin de la tarde. El cupo de nuestra clase es de 24, y
mantenemos un adulto por cada 8 nios.
PLAN DE ESTUDIOS
El plan de estudios implementado en nuestro programa preescolar es referido como de
Altas/Posibilidades (High Scope). Este plan de estudios se enfoca en:
El desarrollo completo del nio a travs de la creacin de un ambiente de

aprendizaje que ofrece actividades manipulativas con materiales de la vida real.
El desarrollo de independencia, solucin de problemas, y de confianza que son

fundamentales para el xito en la escuela y la vida.
El desarrollo de relaciones con adultos y compaeritos del saln con interaccin

positiva que facilitan el aprendizaje y apoya el aprendizaje activo.
La esencia del xito de High/Scope es la creacin de un ambiente de aprendizaje. Nuestro

ambiente esta preparado para que los nios tengan una variedad de reas centros de
inters (reas de Arte, reas de Bloques, reas de Silencio, reas de Ciencias, reas de
juego a la casita, y reas de Computacin) para trabajar todos los das.
Estos centros/reas son hechos teniendo en mente objetivos especficos de aprendizaje
que son basados sobre objetivos del plan de estudios, las observaciones diarias de los
nios, evaluacin de los nios y los objetivos de aprendizaje individualmente establecidos
para los nios y la clase en su totalidad, el personal planea cuales materiales se necesitan
para el ambiente. Cosas como vestirse, bloques, animales vivos, muecos
anatmicamente correctos, pintar, escribir, utensilios/materiales, rompecabezas y libros
son solamente algunos ejemplos del tipo de materiales educacionales con los que su hijo
ser animado a explorar diariamente.
Adems de disear un ambiente de buen aprendizaje, nuestro personal planea actividades
diarias para que los nios participen. Las actividades que promueven y realzan el
crecimiento de desarrollo de los nios se planean cada da durante tiempo de grupo

pequeo y tiempo de grupo grande. Usted puede ver el plan de estudios de actividades,
estn escritas en el cuadro de los padres diariamente.
Nuestro High/Scope plan de estudios esta suplementado con el plan de lectura Pre-K el
cual fue desarrollado y otorgado por First 5 LA. Este programa de estudio enfoca
especficamente el desarrollo de habilidades de lectura. A travs del uso de High/Scope y
nuestro programa de estudio de lectura Pre-K, todos los nios que participan en nuestro
programa estarn listos para entrar en el knder preparados para el siguiente paso de
aprender a leer.
EVALUACIN DE LOS NIOS
Nuestro programa formalmente evala a cada nio/a 60 das despus de su primer da de
la inscripcin y despus en la primavera. Utilizamos el Resultado de datos de Desarrollo
Deseados del Departamento de Educacin (DRDP) que identifica las habilidades
especficas en el cual su nio/a evaluado/a. Basado sobre la evaluacin de su nio/a y la
evaluacin total de la clase', nuestro personal planea actividades que asisten a los nios
en su crecimiento y desarrollo y logran objetivos de aprendizaje que estn identificados en
el DRDP. Durante la conferencia con los padres, la maestra de su nio/a compartir la
evaluacin con usted y juntos fijarn las metas para la mejor preparacin para el knder.
PREPARACIN DEL KINDER
Options reconoce que somos la primera experiencia escolar para muchos de nuestro nios
y nuestro trabajo es aseguramos de que cada nio desarrolle las habilidades necesarias
para tener xito en la escuela primaria.
La comunicacin continua de nuestro personal con los principales y maestros del knder de
la escuela primaria permite saber las expectativas sobre los estudiantes y nos esforzamos
en asistir a nuestros nios a llenar estas expectativas cuando y donde sea apropiado.
Tratamos de hacer la transicin entre el knder y la escuela preescolar tan fcil y suave
como sea posible. Nuestro personal planea los paseos a la clase de knder y tiene
maestras y principales que vienen a visitar nuestra clase siempre que sea posible. Al fin
del ao escolar una evaluacin del estudiante ser completada y enviada a la escuela de
su nio/a as la maestra del knder puede ver lo preparado/a que esta su nio/a para la
escuela.
ALIMENTOS
Por la participacion en el Programa de Alimentacin para Cuidado de los Nios y de
Adultos de California, Options puede proveer almuerzo a todos los nios registrados en
nuestro programa.
Un men de un ciclo de 6 semanas, el cual es apostado en cada centro ha sido
desarrollado para satisfacer las necesidades nutricionales de nuestros nios y seguimos
un patrn especfico de alimentacin que son requeridos por el Departamento de Servicios
de la Nutricin Ofrecemos una variedad de comidas infantiles de diferentes culturas.
Nuestra meta es ofrecer a nuestros nios alimentos que sean familiar para ellos y
presentarles alimentos de otras culturas. Nuestros alimentos son servidos al estilo familiar,
que significa que animamos a servirse por ellos mismos y limpiar ellos mismos despus de
cada alimento.
Si su nio tiene alergias a alguna comida especifica, o no debe comer alguna comida
especifica debido a su religin o restriccin alimenticia, usted puede requerir alguna
comida alternativa.Por favor, complete la forma Request for an Alternative Meal (Requerir
una Comida Alternativa) la cual puede ser obtenida del personal del centro.
Segn la ley federal y la poltica del Departamento de agricultura de los Estados Unidos,
esta institucin se prohbe discriminar en base a raza, color, origen nacional, sexo, edad o
discapacidad.
Para presentar una queja sobre discriminacin, escriba a USDA, Director, Office of
Adjudication, 1400 Independence Avenue, S.W., Washington, DC 20250-9410 o llame al

PASEOS
Nuestro personal planea paseos para engrandecer las experiencias de aprendizaje de
nuestros nios. El personal puede planear ir a paseos caminando a los parques o a los
establecimientos locales. Cuando los dineros presupuestarios estn disponibles, el
personal puede planear un paseo en autobs a un museo de los nios o concierto, o
nuestro personal invita a un visitante especial que venga al sitio para dar una demostracin
de marionetas o demostracin del reptiles. Estos paseos son gratis para nuestros nios. Si
pedimos que tengamos padres voluntarios y podemos cubrir los costos para ellos. Durante
el paseo esperamos que los padres voluntarios ayuden al personal con la supervisin y no
se permite traer a otros hijos, comprar cosas de recuerdo o comida. Consideramos este es
un da de clase y las expectativas que tenemos de nuestros voluntarios siguen siendo
iguales. Para los paseos del autobs intentamos que nuestros padres voluntarios puedan ir
en el autobs, pero el espacio a veces no est disponible en ese caso los
padres/guardianes pueden ponerse de acuerdo con otros padres/guardianes y manejar a
la destinacin juntos. Si usted quisiera ofrecerse voluntariamente a atender un paseo de su
nio, hable por favor con la maestra de su nio/a para hacer arreglos.
Si usted elige que su nio/a no atienda al paseo, su nio/a no podr atender la clase ese
da por que el personal no estar disponible para proveer cuidado.
CELEBRACIONES DE LA ESCUELA
En Options, nos esforzamos para ser sensibles con todas nuestras familias en trminos de
das festivos, cumpleaos, y otros eventos especiales. En nuestro mundo diverso, las
celebraciones no slo son divertidas sino tambin ayudan a los nios tomar realidad de las
culturas y tradiciones. Entendemos que algunas familias tienen creencias que evitan que

participen. La maestra de su nio/a har lo mejor para integrar las necesidades de todas
las familias en la clase.
Los cumpleaos son muy importantes para los nios preescolares. Por favor hable con la
maestra de su nio/a al respecto de cmo se puede celebrar ese da especial en la
escuela.
Las celebraciones del fin del ao escolar se apoyan. Sin embargo, el vestuario de
graduacin no se permite. Los eventos de gradacin con el vestuario pueden poner en
dificultad financiera a nuestras familias.
INSTRUCCIN RELIGIOSA
Options no provee instruccin religiosa o devocin para los nios registrados en nuestro
programa.
DISCIPLINA
Para muchos de nuestros nios estas son las primeras experiencias en la escuela. Ayudar
a los nios en el aprendizaje de las habilidades sociales apropiadas es el objetivo clave en
nuestro programa. El personal se esfuerza para crear un ambiente apropiado para las
edades, con reglas consistentes y apoyan las decisiones. El personal se esfuerza para
anticipar y prevenir los conflictos que pueden presentarse y cuando ocurren, el personal se
dedica a ensenar a los nios a saber expresarse verbalmente para resolverlo. Cada
situacin se puede considerar como un momento de enseanza y largo tiempo y esfuerzo
se usa para estar con cada nio/a para facilitar el desarrollo y habilidad para resolver
problemas.
Los nios preescolares estn aprendiendo cmo identificar y controlar sus emociones.
Este proceso puede ser muy difcil para algunos nios por lo cual recurren a golpear, a
morder, u otro comportamiento inadecuado. Nuestro personal trabaja individualmente con
cada nio/a para desarrollar las habilidades necesarias para poder comunicar sus
necesidades apropiadamente, y para trabajar cooperativamente con otros, esto toma
tiempo. Pedimos a los padres/guardianes su ayuda y paciencia en este proceso. Nuestra
meta con todos los nios en nuestro programa es que aprendan a resolver conflictos
positivamente y con xito.
Options no practica el castigo corporal con nuestros nios.

CIERRE DEL PROGRAMA
Nuestro programa estar cerrado en el Da del Trabajo, Da de Accin de Gracias y el da
siguiente, el Da de Martin Luther King, Da de los Presidentes, el Da de Recordacin, y
puede estar cerrado en vacaciones de invierno en diciembre y vacaciones de primavera en
marzo/abril. Adicional a estos das festivos el programa tambin cerrara por lo menos un
da al mes para entrenamiento del personal y para el tiempo del planeamiento del
personal. Por favor revise los avisos con la maestra de su nio/a con respecto a las fechas
especficas que estaremos cerrados.

NECESIDADES ESPECIALES
Los nios con necesidades especiales pueden ser matriculados en el centro siempre y
cuando se haga de acuerdo a un plan entre la familia y el administrador del programa.
Cada necesidad se considerara de manera individual de acuerdo a cada nio/a. Para
apoyar esta inclusin, adaptaciones especficas y ajustes sern examinados y alternativas
razonables se exploraran. Se podrn hacer modificaciones a las reglas y procedimientos si
no alteran fundamentalmente la naturaleza del programa y los servicios que el centro
provee o afecte adversamente la operacin del centro. Los servicios se ofrecern de la
manera ms integrada y apropiada para las necesidades de los nios.
LESIONES DEL ESTUDIANTE
En caso que ocurra una lesin de su nio/a durante el tiempo de la clase, la maestra de su
nio/a le informar cuando recoja a su nio o por una llamada telefnica dependiendo de
la severidad de la lesin. Adems, usted debe recibir un informe de lesin, Minor Injury
Report, con respecto a la lesin.
Options provee un plan de seguro llamado tiempo de escuela para cada nio enlistado en
nuestro programa. La seguranza esta destinada para suplementar el seguro medico
existente o proveer nicamente seguro medico para los nios que no tienen ningn seguro
en el caso que ocurra una lesin mientras esta en la escuela o en un evento patrocinado
por la escuela. En el caso de una lesin que requiera atencin mdica, por favor, hable
con nuestro personal para saber cmo puede tener acceso al plan de la seguranza.
PREPARATIVOS PARA EMERGENCIA
Para preparar a nuestros nios para casos de emergencias, una vez al mes el personal
ensayara que hacer en caso de un incendio y que hacer en caso de un terremoto. En el
cuadro de anuncios de los padres estar disponible la documentacin acerca de ese da
de prctica. En caso de una emergencia, cada sitio esta equipado con un paquete de
emergencia para cada nio que los sostenga por 72 horas.
REQUISITOS DE LOS PADRES/GUARDIANES:
ARTICULOS DE LA CASA
Pedimos su cooperacin de no mandar artculos personales de la casa a los centros a
menos que el personal haya designado un da para compartir o si el articulo sea parte de
un proyecto escolar. Si su nio/a tiene un juguete especial o articulo personal que quisiera
traer para compartirlo con los dems nios y personal, por favor hablen con el personal por
adelantado. Ni el programa de Options ni nuestro personal es responsable por los juguetes
perdidos o quebrados que sus nios traigan.
ROPA
Su nio/a se va ensuciar! Por favor mande a su nio/a en ropa cmoda que puedan jugar
activamente y con zapatos cmodos y ajustados a sus pies. Si usted quisiera dejar un
cambio de ropa en el sitio para su nio/a, por favor hable con la maestra/o de su nio para
discutir si es necesario. Los gabinetes de almacenaje para los nios son compartidas entre
las clases de A.M. y P.M. as que el almacenaje es muy limitado en el sitio. Por favor
marque el nombre de su nio/a en toda la ropa.
COMMUNICACION
La comunicacin entre el hogar y la escuela es esencial para el xito de nuestro programa.
Adems de la comunicacin diaria informal con ustedes, nuestro personal organizara dos
conferencias durante el ao escolar. Estas conferencias permitirn que nuestro personal
comparta informacin con ustedes sobre el desarrollo social/emocional, intelectual y fsico
de su nio/a, y fijara con usted metas para poder aumentar el desarrollo de sus nios y
familia. Si necesitan informacin sobre el progreso de su nio/a en la clase en otros
ocasiones, por favor hablen directamente con el personal y pida una cita para una
conferencia.
Cada sitio tiene un cuadro para los padres. Por favor revise el cuadro todos los das para
recibir la informacin importante del saln de clases o anuncios sobre las juntas o servicios
de los cuales ustedes se pudieran beneficiar.
NOTIFICACION DE CAMBIO
Es la responsabilidad de usted de informar al personal del centro y a la oficina de
administracin dentro de los primeros (10) das, si hay algn cambio de direccin de
residencia o trabajo, y los telfonos de la casa o el trabajo, o nmeros de telfono para
emergencia.
JUNTAS PARA LOS PADRES
Una vez al mes nuestro personal conducir una junta con los padres. A ustedes se les
notificara sobre la fecha y hora de la junta. En esta junta el personal compartir
informacin adecuada sobre la clase de su nio/a. Adems, durante estas juntas ustedes
pueden obtener informacin valiosa sobre variedad de temas tales como nutricin, salud, y
temas del desarrollo del nio sern ofrecidas como parte del programa de educacin de
los padres de nuestro programa. Estos temas se eligen sobre los intereses que son
significantes y personales de los padres/guardianes. Asegrense de asistir a todas las
juntas.
A los padres tambin se les pedir que escojan a un representante de la clase para asistir
al Comit Consejero de Padres. El Comit Consejero de Padres consiste de un
representante de casa clase en nuestra divisin. Los miembros se renen tres veces al
ao con la administracin del programa para aconsejar a la administracin sobre cmo
mejorar el programa y mantener la alta calidad de nuestro programa.

PADRES VOLUNTARIOS
Usted tiene un papel clave en la educacin de su nio/a, y Options lo considera como
parte de nuestro equipo de enseanza. Sirviendo como voluntario en el saln de clase de
su nio/a usted puede participar en la experiencia de aprendizaje y enriquecimiento de su
nio. Hemos creado un Manual de Padres Voluntarios para ayudar y guiar en ese da, y
que sea recompensable tanto para usted como para su nio/a.
Esperamos que los padres/guardianes participen como voluntarios en el saln de clase
mensualmente. Una hoja para anotarse estar disponible cada mes para que se anoten
para participar en los das que ms les convenga en su horario.
Participando como voluntarios ayuda a nuestro programa a mantener un adulto por cada 8
nios un requisito de nuestra fuente de financiamiento. Es vital que cuando usted se anote
como voluntario marque su calendario as no se le olvida. Contamos que usted estara ah.
REQUISITOS DEL PROGRAMA:
ELIGIBILIDAD
Para ser elegible para recibir servicios de preescolar estatal de California, el Departamento
de Educacin, Divisin del Desarrollo Infantil establece lo siguiente:
a. Los nios cumplen con el requisito de edad establecido para los nios de tres y
cuatro aos.
b. Familias cumplen una de las siguientes
1. Reciben ayuda en efectivo
2. Son familias sin hogar
3. Tienen un nio en riesgo de abuso, negligencia o explotacin o reciben
servicios protectores de nios a travs del departamento de asistencia del
condado.
4. Cumplen el requisito de ingresos establecidos por el Departamento.
c. Viven en California
PRIORIDADES DE ADMISIN
El Departamento de Educacin, de la Divisin de Desarrollo Infantil ordena que nuestro
programa sirva a familias de bajos recursos quienes son elegibles para los servicios en la
siguiente prioridad:
a. nios elegibles por edad que reciben servicios de proteccin infantil o que corren el
riesgo de ser abusados, abandonados, o explotados.
b. nios elegibles de cuatro aos comenzando con las familias de menos ingresos.
c. nios elegibles de tres aos comenzando con las familias de menos ingresos.
Adicionalmente, Options requiere que todos los nios deben estar entrenados para ir al
bao y ser capaz de cuidarse de sus propias necesidades del bao sin ayuda del adulto.
Nuestro programa no da ninguna prioridad a nios identificados con necesidades
especiales. Todas las familias deben calificar con las prioridades establecidas

anteriormente. Excepciones a estos pueden ser hechos solamente por nuestra pliza de
Necesidades Especiales. (Ver la pgina 13).
CUOTA DE PADRES
Familias que reciben servicios preescolares estatales se les impondr una cuota de familia
basado en el ajuste de ingreso familiar mensual, el tamao de la familia y nios
matriculados en otros programas al que se les ha impuesto un pago a la familia. La
cantidad de la cuota familiar se basa en la lista de la tarifa familiar establecido por el
Departamento de Educacin, Divisin de desarrollo infantil. Todas las familias a las que se
ha impuesto una cuota o pago debern firmar un "Convenio de Familiar de Pago".
Familias que reciben servicios de cuidado y desarrollo infantil de otro proveedor pueden
calificar para recibir crditos por estos pagos. Las familias que califican deben de firmar un
"Acuerdo de Pago por Hermano.
No se impondr ningn otro pago a los padres, y en ningn momento se les pedir pagar
por servicios del programa tales como paseos, materiales para el aula o de limpieza, o
para que alguien sirva como voluntario. Si la maestra/o de su nio/a, el Representante
Consultivo Del Padre, u otro personal o padres del programa, le piden que pague por
cualquier artculo, por favor comunquese con la supervisora del sitio, la supervisora del
programa o con la directora de la divisin lo mas ante posible. Se puede comunicar con
ellos en la oficina principal de la Ciudad de Industria.
POLIZA DE FRAUDE Y ENGAO
Nuestro programa, es un programa subsidiado por el Estado y todas las familias deben
calificar de acuerdo a las regulaciones especificadas por el Estado de California. Por lo
tanto, toda la informacin que recibimos de usted al momento de inscripcin, esta sujeta a
verificacin para asegurarnos que no haya ningn fraude o engao para poder calificar a

LOS DERECHOS DEL CLIENTE AL DEBIDO PROCESO
Si no est de acuerdo con la accin que Options State Preschool ha tomado como indica
el Aviso de Accin (Notice of Action), usted puede apelar la accin intentada.
Instrucciones sobre cmo apelar un aviso de accin (NOA) se especifica en la parte
posterior de la forma y deben respetarse.
ACCESO PARA LOS PADRES Y RDENES DE LA CORTE
Options se asegura que los padres/guardianes de los nios matriculados en nuestro
programa tengan acceso ilimitado para con sus nios. Para algunas familias el acceso a
sus nios es restringido cuando la familia tiene una orden judicial de custodia y/o una
orden de restriccin. Si esto se aplica a usted o a su familia, Options les pide que
entreguen una copia para que nuestro personal se adhiera a la orden de la corte.

Sin documentacin legal, nuestro programa no puede prohibir a un padre el acceso

de su nio/a.
FIRMANDO AL ENTRAR
Diariamente cuando su nio/a atiende nuestra escuela, debe de ser firmado al entrar y
firmado a la salida por un adulto. Por ley, la persona responsable de esto, debe firmar su
nombre completo y escribir la hora exacta de la llegada y de la salida. No se permite firmar
en fecha anticipada o en el da en que su nio/a estuvo ausente.
Solamente personas mayores de 18 aos pueden ser autorizadas para recoger a los nios
de nuestro programa. La UNICA excepcin es si el menor es el padre/madre del nio.
TARJETAS DE EMERGENCIAS
La seguridad de su nio/a es muy importante para nosotros. Una de las maneras que
nosotros protegemos la seguridad del nio es entregando a su nio/a a los padres,
guardianes o personas autorizadas por usted en la tarjeta de emergencia. Por lo tanto, es
muy importante mantener al da la tarjeta de emergencia de su nio/a. Options no har
excepciones a esta pliza.
Cuando alguien adems de usted va a llevarse al nio/a, por favor asegrese de avisar a
nuestro personal. Nuestro personal revisara la tarjeta de emergencia para asegurarse de
que la persona aparece en la lista, si la persona no est en la lista usted necesitara
adicionarla escribiendo el nombre y telfono en la tarjeta o escribiendo una nota que se
adherir a la tarjeta de emergencia de su nio/a. Esto no se puede hacer por telfono. Por
favor, informe a la persona que llevara al nio/a, que el/ella debe tener un
documento de identificacin, as nuestro personal podr verificar quienes son ellos.
Esto es una medida de precaucin que hemos tomado para la seguridad de su nio/a. Es
importante que nosotros podamos entregar al nio/a nicamente a aquellas personas que
fueron autorizadas por usted por escrito.
Adicionalmente, por favor asegrese de haber informado a las personas alistadas en al
tarjeta de emergencia de que usted los ha autorizado para recoger a su nio/a. Si por
alguna razn llega a ocurrir una emergencia a su hijo/a, y no podemos encontrarlo,
llamaremos a dichas personas que han sido autorizadas por usted a recoger a su nio/a.
Por favor de recordar, solamente personas mayores de 18 aos pueden ser autorizadas
para recoger a los nios de nuestro programa. La UNICA excepcin es si el menor es el
padre/madre del nio.
POLIZA DEL TIEMPO DE SALON DE CLASE
Nuestro programa tiene un horario de 3 horas. Los nios pueden ser registrados en
nuestras clases de la maana o la clase de la tarde. Se espera que llegue al saln de
clase a tiempo y recoja a su nio a tiempo. Si su nio/a llega a la escuela tarde y es
recogido tarde excesivamente, su nio/a podr ser expulsado del programa.

Llegar a la escuela a tiempo es muy importante. Cuando llega tarde, el/ella ha perdido la
oportunidad de aprendizaje que nuestro personal ha planeado. Adicionalmente, al llegar
tarde interrumpe el saln de clase ya que nuestro personal tiene que parar lo que estn
haciendo para saludar a cada nio y padre. Por favor respete el aprendizaje de su nio/a y
de otros. Llegue al saln de clase a tiempo.
Recoger a su nio/a a tiempo es igualmente importante. Cuando el saln de clase se
termina, nuestro personal tiene muy poco tiempo para la limpieza del saln de clase y para
planear para el siguiente da. Cuando los nios todava estn all, estas tareas no pueden
ser hechas. Por favor no quite a nuestro personal el tiempo que necesitan para poder
hacer el trabajo para la educacin de su nio/a.
Si no recogen a su nio/a a tiempo y los contactos de emergencia no se pueden localizar
para recoger a su nio/a, la polica local puede ser llamada y su nio/a puede ser
entregado a su custodia o la custodia del Servicio de Proteccin de Nios.
AUSENCIAS
La asistencia de su nio/a es extremadamente importante para su aprendizaje. Sin
embargo, entendemos que habr das en que su nio/a estar enfermo, o hay una
emergencia que evita que l/ella venga a la escuela. Le pedimos que llamen a la maestra
de su nio/a cuando vayan a estar ausente del programa.
El estado requiere que nuestro programa se determine si la ausencia fue excusada o no.
Para hacer esto, nuestro personal le preguntara la razn de la ausencia de su nio/a. Esto
deber ser hecho sea que la ausencia sea por enfermedad, vacaciones o citas medicas, as
de esta manera podremos determinar si la falta puede ser excusable o no, para el reporte
del estado.
Cada nio/a tiene derecho a 10 das de ausencia considerando el mejor inters de su
nio/a. Por favor refirase a su copia de la pliza de asistencia recibida en el tiempo de la
inscripcin.
Cualquier nio/a que falte excesivamente por cualquier otra razn que no sea por
enfermedad o por el mejor inters del nio/a, podra ser expulsado del programa.
Si surgen circunstancias en que usted decide que su nio/a no atender ms al programa
le pedimos que notifique a la oficina de administracin lo ms pronto posible al nmero
(626) 854-3449.
PRACTICAS DE SALUD
Chequeos de salud:
Los nios aprenden mejor cuando son sanos. Por favor no mande a su nio/a a la escuela
si el/ella esta enfermo. Nuestro personal har informalmente un chequeo de salud diario.
No aceptarn a un nio/a en el programa si el/ella tiene mucosidad nasal (no-clara),
diarrea, vomito, dolor de estmago, dolor del odo, glndulas hinchadas, fiebre exceso

de100, tos fuerte, ojos infectados o demuestran que el/ella esta demasiado enfermo para
participar en el programa en ese da.
Enfermedades:
Si su nio/a se enferma en el centro, se les llamar para que vengan a recogerlo/la. Si
usted no est disponible, el personal llamar a los individuos que han sido autorizados por
usted en la tarjeta de emergencia. Por favor, asegrese que toda la informacin en la
tarjeta de emergencia de su nio/a este al da.
Options tiene plizas muy rigurosas con respecto a las enfermedades comunicables
(varicela, sarampin, escarlatina, etc.) y piojos, para proteger a los nios tanto como sea
posible. Si su nio contrae una enfermedad que sea contagiosa, por favor asegrese de
informar a nuestro personal. Su nio/a necesitar una nota del Dr. para regresar a la clase
si ha contrado una enfermedad contagiosa. La nica excepcin es casos de piojos.
Nuestro personal alertar a los otros padres de la enfermedad comunicable y con los
sntomas pero al mismo tiempo proteger la confidencialidad del nio.
Su nio/a debe estar libre de las liendres para regresar a la escuela. Un chequeo de salud
informal ser hecho por el personal para los nios que han estado ausente a causa de una
enfermedad para asegurar que l/ella est listo para regresar la escuela.
Firmemente recomendamos que su nio/a no haya tenido de fiebre por 24 horas antes de
regresar a la escuela.
Alergias:
Si su nio tiene alergias, por favor asegrese que usted lo haya indicado en la historia de
salud del nio. Si su nio tiene una alergia del alimento, hable por favor con la maestra de
su nio/a. Nuestro programa ofrece el almuerzo a todos nuestros nios y tiene un men
proyectado de 6 ciclos. Si una comida alternativa necesita ser arreglada para su nio
debido a su alergia del alimento, el profesor de su nio puede ayudarle hacer estos
arreglos. (Ver Alimentos en la paging 8)
Medicamentos:
Si su nio necesita tomar un medicamento durante la escuela, usted necesita llenar el
formulario de medicamento especificando el nombre de la medicina, dosificacin, cmo
debe ser administrada y si debe ser refrigerada. Solamente el medicamento prescrito por
un mdico ser administrado. La medicina no se puede dar sin una nota del doctor de su
nio/a. Toda medicina debe tener una etiqueta de la farmacia con el nombre de su nio/a
en ella y el casquillo de seguridad. Si su nio requiere un inhalador, hable por favor con la
maestra de su nio, necesitara llenar formas especiales de permiso por usted.

RAZONES PARA NO ADMITIR A CLIENTES Y REGLAS DE TERMINACION SERVICIOS DE

OPTIONS
Options tiene la obligacin de servir a las familias que llenen los requisitos para nuestros
programas. Sin embargo, por un nmero limitado de circunstancias, podra ser imposible
para Options ofrecer o continuar proveyendo servicios a algunas familias en particular.
La decisin de no aceptar a algn aplicante para recibir cuidado, o de no admitir a alguna

familia o de no seguir ofreciendo servicios a alguna familia ser la decisin de la Directora
de Divisin del Programa y se les informara a los padres por escrito tal decisin. Los
padres pueden pedir una copia de esta pliza a Options llamando al telfono (626) 8543449.
POLIZA DE NO DISCRIMINACION
Options-Una Agencia de Cuidado de Nios y Servicios Humanitarios, es una organizacin
privada no lucrativa, una agencia de oportunidad de igualdad, que ofrece servicios de
cuidado de nios a familias sin importar el sexo, orientacin sexual, gnero tnico, raza,

Adicionalmente, Options se esfuerza por crear un ambiente libre de formas de acoso

Introduccin
Bienvenidos a OptionsPreescolar Estatal! Su participacin en la educacin de su nio es uno
de muchos factores dominantes que garantizaran el xito en la escuela a su nio. Usted es el
primer profesor de su nio, y ese papel que usted tiene es uno que Options valoriza
profundamente. Deseamos ser socios con usted de modo que juntos seamos capaces de
resolver las necesidades de su nio y de prepararlo/la para el kinder. Juntos, usted y la maestra
de su nio podrn desarrollar una relacin positiva entre hogar y la escuela que consolide y
anime el crecimiento y el desarrollo de su nio igualmente ofrecindole apoyo en el trabajo
importante que usted tiene como el padre y primer profesor de su nio.
Servir como padre voluntario es una de las muchas maneras de involucrarse. Al ofrecerse como
voluntario usted tiene la oportunidad de experimentar el da en la escuela de su nio, aprende
sobre nuestro plan de estudios High/Scope, ve cmo la maestra de su nio anima a los nios ha
aprenden, se familiariza con los amiguitos de su nio, y tendr comunicacin con los otros
padres.
Mientras esta en el saln de clase, Options quiere que usted sea un participante activo en el
aprendizaje de su nio. Este manual es diseado para ofrecerle instruccin en lo que debe ser la
experiencia cuando el padre se ofrece como voluntario.
Nosotros estamos seguros que al ofrecerse como voluntario en el saln de clase de su nio
resultara ser una experiencia muy recompensada para usted y su nio y estamos orgullosos de
tenerlo como parte de nuestro equipo. Esperamos a familiarizarnos con usted y su nio y
desarrollar una relacin de socios con usted que apoyara el aprendizaje de su nio.
Metas y Expectativas
Options solicita con que los padres se ofrezcan como voluntarios en el saln de clase
mensualmente. Cuando usted se ofrece como voluntario, el saln de clase de su nio se
beneficia en la siguiente forma:
Tendremos mas adultos por cada nio lo que significa mejor supervisin y ms tiempo de
obrar recprocamente con los nios para atizar el aprendizaje
Tendremos mas manos para preparar los materiales para nuestro ambiente de aprendizaje
Adems de que el saln de clase de su nio sea beneficiado, USTED se beneficiara tambin en

PARTICIPACION EN LAS AREAS DE CLASE

Nuestros centros estn divididos en diferentes reas con especfico foco de aprendizaje. Las
reas fundamentales en el ambiente de aprendizaje son rea del Hogar, rea de Bloques, rea
de Arte, rea de Silencio, y rea de Ciencias. Cada rea tiene actividades especficas con
designadas metas para los nios. Mientras usted esta de voluntario usted vera a los nios
laborando con material especifico para cada rea intencionalmente disponibles a los nios para
reforzar habilidades especificas de desarrollo. El tiempo que se pasa en las reas de aprendizaje
es llamado Tiempo de Actividad y es la parte con ms tiempo durante la rutina diaria porque es
donde la mayora de aprendizaje del nio ocurre. Los nios solucionan problemas, crean,
exploran, y hacen decisiones, descubrimientos importantes que apoyan el desarrollo cognitivo,
social/emocional, fsico y creativo.
rea del Hogar

Juguemos a la casita es una frase familiar en cualquier ambiente preescolar. A travs del juego
dramtico los nios amplan su imaginacin, solucionan problemas, aprenden a desarrollar
relaciones y actan los temores y las experiencias de la vida con seguridad. El rea del Hogar es
un lugar en donde los nios usan vestuarios y experimentan con nuevos papeles y pretenden ser
una mam, un pap, un veterinario, un oficial de polica, un trabajador postal, un cocinero, o etc.
En el rea del Hogar, los nios estn:
Explorando los papeles que la gente tiene en este mundo

Expresando sus emociones e ideas
Aprendiendo que sus ideas tienen valor
Aprendiendo cmo cooperar con otros
Aprendiendo cmo ser implicado en una comunidad
Desarrollando su imaginacin y creatividad
Aqu estn algunas maneras que usted puede apoyar el crecimiento y el desarrollo de los nios
en el rea del Hogar:
Juegue con su nio que acta el papel siendo el paciente en una clnica o cliente de su
restaurante, saln de belleza, etc.
Siga la iniciativa del nio y juegue con su nio sin asumir el control, permitiendo que los
nios le inviten a que participe o pidiendo su permiso.
rea de Arte
El rea de Arte ofrece a los nios la oportunidad de utilizar su imaginacin y creatividad. Con la
exploracin en el rea de Arte, los nios desarrollan habilidades motores, solucionan problemas,
y la coordinacin de ojo-mano. El arte permite a los nios expresar sus ideas y emociones.
En el rea de Arte, los nios estn:
Desarrollando la coordinacin de ojo-mano

Aprendiendo los conceptos de simetra, del balance, el patrn, y del diseo
Aprendiendo los conceptos de las formas, del tamao, y de la localizacin, que son
relevantes a la lectura

trabajo?
Permita que los nios creen o que hagan sus propias ilustraciones/proyecto. Aunque le
impulsen o pidan que usted lo haga por ellos anime a su nio dicindole, quisiera ver
cmo dibujas una flor.
rea de Bloques
Como el rea del Hogar, el rea de Bloques es generalmente una de las reas ms ocupadas
del saln de clase. Usted ver a nios construyendo, conectando, y diseando. Estas actividades
ayudan a los nios exploran relaciones espaciales, relaciones estructurales, balance, y las
semejanzas y las diferencias.
En el rea de Bloques, los nios estn:

En tiempo cuando los nios necesitan un lugar tranquilo, el rea de Silencio provee eso. Los
nios pueden trabajar por si mismos o con un amiguito en un rea relativamente reservada. En el
rea de Silencio los nios podrn participar en actividades tales como escuchar los cuentos,
jugar con rompecabezas, practicar el patrn encadenando granos, explorar la escritura al copiar
el patrn, o clasificar objetos por caractersticas especificas.
En el rea de Silencio, los nios estn:
Desarrollando las habilidades de motrices finas

explorar animales, las plantas, naturaleza, y causa y efecto con observaciones, la coleccin de
datos, y la experimentacin.
En el rea de Ciencia, los nios estn:

Explorando los conceptos de la textura, del color, del peso y del tamao
Juntando los objetos por categoras
Observando smil arridad y diferencias
Aprendiendo apreciar la naturaleza y desarrollar un sentido inquisitivo

El rea de Computadora
El rea de Computadora ofrece a los nios una experiencia interactiva con muchas
oportunidades de descubrir relaciones controlando acontecimientos en la pantalla, igualmente
una experiencia con tecnologa. Los nios exploran habilidades de la pre-instruccin y
habilidades de matemticas con los programas diseados especficamente para los nios de
edad preescolar.
En el rea de Computadora los nios estn:

Practicando habilidades de lengua y de la instruccin
Escuchando msica
Explorando letras y el alfabeto

RELACION DE LOS PADRES Y NIOS

Los nios no slo aprenden sobre la exploracin y de solucin de problemas con los materiales
pero tambin con las interacciones que tienen con sus padres y otros adultos en el ambiente. Su
interaccin con los nios cuando se ofrezca como voluntario es para el aprendizaje de los nios.
Haciendo preguntas que causen y animen a los nios que piensen ms y utilicen ms el lenguaje
construye su conocimiento y desarrolla el aprendizaje. Usted puede hacer esto posible animando
a los nios que hablen de lo qu ellos estn haciendo y porqu.
Aqu estn algunas sugerencias en cmo hacer preguntas a los nios que su pensamiento:
Qu sucedera si?
Qu materiales utilizaste?
Que te hace pensar esto?
De qu manera son diferentes o iguales?
Dime sobre tu(dibujo, creacin, producto)
Puedes hacer la prxima?
Qu hay en cuanto a disciplina?

La raz de la palabra disciplina significa ensenar. Los nios aprenden haciendo. Es por esa razn,
que es importante que los nios se sientan libres de explorar su ambiente sin sentirse
restringidos. Aun as ellos necesitan estar seguros y saber que hay reglas en el sitio y
expectaciones sobre el comportamiento. Si usted ve que algn nio esta en peligro por favor
avise a nuestro personal.
Lo que se ver en nuestro sitio:
El personal utilizar redireccin positiva. Por ejemplo, en lugar de decir "No corras en el
saln", Usted escuchar "Recuerda que caminamos en el saln, as no podemos caernos
o lastimarnos" o "Recordar a utilizar tus pies de caminar".
El personal evitar el uso de la palabra "No" que ayuda a los nios a aprender que ocurren
errores y que no se les va a regaar por cometer un error as fomenta el desarrollo de
autoconfianza del nio.
LO QUE PUEDE ESPERAR EN EL SITIO

En la rutina diaria del plan de estudios de High/Scope las maestras dan a los nios preescolares
un sentido de control sobre los eventos del da planeando una rutina consistente que permite a
los nios anticipar lo que suceder despus. Elementos centrales de la rutina diaria preescolar
incluyen la secuencia de revisin del plan-(tiempo de planificacin tiempo de trabajar tiempo
de recordarl), tiempo de grupo pequeos y grandes , tiempo de saludo y tiempo en campo libre.
Cmo nuestro personal desarrolla la programacin diaria depende de las horas de operacin del
programa y las necesidades de los nios.
Grupo Grande/Tiempo de Saludo: El tiempo del Grupo Grande junta a los ninos y adultos por
un breve momento para intercambiar informacion y hablar sobre la rutina del dia y reenfocar los
objetivos de aprendizaje. Los nios se juntan con los adultos para companeria, compartir, y
disfrutar el hacer las cosas juntos como una comunidad.

con uno a otro y los adultos acerca de lo que estan haciendo. Durante este tiempo, los nios
trabajan con la maestra asignada, quien presenta los objetivos de aprendizaje para el da y guas
de su aprendizaje a travs de la actividad prevista.

Tiempo de actividades al aire libre: Durante este tiempo, los nios son capaces de participar en
el juego al aire libre para utilizar sus habilidades motoras netas y obtener sus cuerpos
entrenados. Tambin es una actividad de enfoque planificado cada da donde los nios pueden
practicar una cierta habilidad o participar en una actividad de juego cooperativo, como juego de
ftbol o paracadas. El entorno exterior es una extensin de nuestra aula interior. Por lo tanto ser
presentado desarrollado para que los nios exploren los centros de aprendizaje. Durante este
tiempo, los nios son capaces de participar en el juego al aire libre para utilizar sus habilidades
motoras netas y obtener sus cuerpos entrenados. Tambin es una actividad de enfoque
planificado cada da donde los nios pueden practicar una cierta habilidad o participar en una
actividad de juego cooperativo, como juego de ftbol o paracadas. El entorno exterior es una
extensin de nuestra aula interior. Usted ver centros de aprendizaje desarrollados para que los
ninos exploren.

hacer durante el tiempo de trabajo. Las maestras animan la iniciativa y el inters a travs de
preguntas relacionadas con los planes de los nios.

Tiempo de trabajo: Durante este tiempo, los nios realizan sus planes y trabajan en los distintos
mbitos con los materiales de su eleccin. Adultos participan y son participantes activos en el
juego de los nios.
Exploracin de los centros de aprendizaje

Cuando los nios se van de una rea y van a otro para replanificar con un adulto
Caminando y convertirse en parte de lo que los nios decidieron en que trabajar

Ayudar a reponer materiales tales como el rellenado de pintura, pegamento, etc.
Tiempo de recuerdo: Despus de que los nios completan sus planes se renen en grupos
ms pequeos con la maestra. Los nios tienen la oportunidad de reflexionar y hablar sobre lo
que han hecho y logrado. Adultos hacen preguntas que permiten a los nios a pensar y compartir
sus experiencias. Tiempo de recuerdo es el seguimiento de tiempo de planificacin. Por lo tanto,
la actividad planificada puede ser el mismo. Vea ejemplos de tiempo de planificacin.
Tiempo de almuerzo: Durante este tiempo, los nios comen en un ambiente de estilo familiar.

Introduction
Welcome to Options-State Preschool! Your involvement in your childs education is one of many
key factors that guarantee your childs school success. You are your childs first teacher, and this
role is one that Options deeply values. We want to partner with you so that together we are able to
meet the needs of your child and prepare him/her for kindergarten. Together, you and your childs
teacher will be able to develop a positive home/school relationship that will nurture and encourage
your childs growth and development as well as offer you support in the important job you do as
your childs parent and first teacher.
Parent volunteering is one of the many ways to get involved. Volunteering provides you with the
opportunity to experience first hand the school day of your child, learn about our High/Scope
curriculum, see how your childs teacher encourages learning, get to know your childs friends,
and network with other parents.
While in the classroom, Options wants you to be an active participant in your childs learning. This
handbook is designed to offer you insight into what the parent volunteering experience should be.
We feel confident that volunteering in your childs classroom will prove to be a very rewarding
experience for you and your child and are proud to have you as part of our team. We look forward
to getting to know you and your child and to developing a partnership with you that will support
your childs learning.
Expectations and Goals

Options expects that parents volunteer in the classroom monthly. When you volunteer, your childs
classroom benefits by:
Having a decreased child/adult ratio which means we have better supervision and more
time to interact with children to foster learning
Having additional hands to prepare materials for our learning environment
In addition to your childs classroom benefiting, YOU benefit as well by:
Gaining knowledge and insight about your childs learning and his/her growth and
development
Increasing communication between home and school
Networking with other parents
Networking with your childs teachers and developing positive relationships with them
Getting to know your childs friends
Sharing in your childs educational experience
INVOLVEMENT IN THE CLASSROOM AREAS

Our classroom is set up in different learning areas. The basic areas in the learning environment
are the House Area, Block Area, Art Area, Quiet Area, and Science Area. Each area has particular
activities and goals designed for the children. While volunteering, you will see children working
with materials intentionally made available to them to reinforce specific developmental skills. The
time spent in the learning areas is called work time and is the longest part of the daily routine
because it is where most of a childs learning takes place. Children problem solve, create, explore,
and make important choices, decisions, and discoveries that support their cognitive,
social/emotional, physical and creative development.
House Area
Lets play house is a familiar phrase in any preschool setting. Through dramatic play children
expand their imagination, problem solve, learn to develop relationships with others and safely act
out fears and life experiences. The House Area is a place where children dress-up and
experiment with new roles through pretend play such as a mom, dad, veterinarian, police officer,
postal worker, chef, etc.
In the House Area, children are:
Exploring roles people have in world

Expressing their feelings and ideas
Learning that their ideas have value
Learning how to cooperate with others
Learning how to be involved in a community
Developing their imagination and creativity
Here are some ways you are able to support childrens growth and development in the House
Area:
Get involved in the childs role playing by being

the patient at a clinic or customer at their
restaurant, beauty salon, etc.
Follow the childs lead and join in childrens play without taking over by allowing children to
invite you to participate or asking their permission.
Art Area
The Art Area offers children the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity. Through their
exploration in the Art Area, children develop fine motor skills, problem solving, and eye-hand
coordination. Art enables children to express their ideas and emotions.
In the Art Area, children are:
Developing eye-hand coordination

Learning concepts of symmetry, balance, patterns, and design
Learning concepts of shapes, size, and location, which are relevant to reading
Gaining knowledge of different textures
Learning the basic strokes of printed language
Learning skills on how to use various writing tools
Developing their imagination and creativity
Here are some ways you are able to support childrens growth and development in the Art Area:
Encourage them to be creative and explore the different materials by asking open-ended
questions about their work such as, Tell me about what you are creating. or What will you
add to your work next?
Allow children to create or make their own artwork/project. Even if you are tempted or
asked to do it for them encourage children by saying, Id like to see how you draw a
flower.
Block Area
Like the House Area, the Block Area is usually one of the busiest areas in the classroom. You will
see the children building, connecting, and designing. These activities help children explore spatial
relationships, structural relations, balance, and similarities and differences.
In the Block Area, children are:
Learning structural concepts of shapes, sizes, measurement, length and location

Creating and repeating patterns
Exercising their imaginations
Learning to express ideas
Cooperating with others
Problems solving
Using mathematical concepts
Here are some ways you are able to support childrens growth and development in the Block
Area:
Talk to children about the materials they are using

Help children identify the shapes, colors or materials theyre using--I see you are using
blue triangles on top of your building.
Follow the childrens lead when they are building or inventing something. Ask, What
should we use next?, giving the children time to think about how they want to proceed.
Quiet Area
For times when children need a calm place to be, the Quiet Area provides this. Children are able
to work by themselves or with a friend in a relatively quiet area. In the Quiet Area children will be
able to engage in activities such as listening to stories, putting together puzzles, practicing pattern
making by stringing beads, exploring writing by tracing patterns, or sorting objects by specific
characteristics.
In the Quite Area, children are:
Developing fine motor skills

Creating and repeating patterns
Sorting, counting, and sequencing

Learning mathematical concepts of shapes, size, measurement, length and location
Problem solving
Exploring concepts of texture, color, weight and size
Using eye-hand coordination
Here are some ways you are able to support childrens growth and development in the Quiet Area:
Read to the children

Join in the activity, if possible
Encourage children to use the counting materials, lacing, games, etc.
Science Area
The Science Area is a place where children learn about their world through hands-on exploration.
The learning of science is made real and fun for our children. They can explore animals, plants,
nature, and cause and effect through observations, data collection, and experimentation.
In the Science Area, children are:
Using new vocabulary

Exploring concepts of texture, color, weight, and size
Grouping objects into categories
Observing similarities and differences
Learning to appreciate nature and develop a sense of wonder
Learning about life cycles and how to care for living plants/animals
Here are some ways you are able to support childrens growth and development in the Science
Area:
If there are live plants/animals, talk to children about them--What do you think they eat?
Show children how their actions determine outcomes (cause and effect). For example, If
you mix blue with red, what do you think will happen?
Encourage children to use sensory materials such as water, sand, pasta, etc. Discuss
concepts such as measurements (more/less), textures (hard/soft), and properties
(sink/float).
Computer Area
The Computer Area offers children an interactive experience with many opportunities to discover
relationships by controlling events on the screen, as well as having a hands-on experience with
technology. Children explore pre-literacy skills and math skills through programs designed
specifically for preschoolers.
In the Computer Area children are:
Counting, classifying, seriating, and sorting

Practicing language and literacy skills
Listening to music
Exploring letters and the alphabet
Practicing math skills such as adding and subtracting
Here are some ways you are able to support childrens growth and development in the Computer
Area:
Offer assistance to get the computer started

Talk about what program they are using
Encourage the child to explore the different activities offered by the program and talk about
what he/she is doing
PARENT/CHILD INTERACTION
Children learn not only through exploring and problem solving with materials but also through the
interactions they have with their peers and adults in the environment. Your interactions with
children while volunteering is key to their learning. Asking open-ended questions that cause and
encourage children to think more and use more language builds on their knowledge and develops
their learning.
You can make this happen by encouraging children to talk about what he/she is doing and why.
Here are some suggestions on how to pose questions to children that will encourage their
thinking:
What would happen if?

What materials did you use?
What does this make you think of?
In what way are these different or the same?
Tell me about your(picture, building, product)
What can you do next time?
What about discipline?

The root word of discipline means to teach. Children learn by doing. Therefore, it is important that
children feel free to explore their environment without feeling restricted. Yet, they need to be safe
and know there are rules in the classroom and expectations regarding their behavior. When
interacting with the children, there are different ways to positively redirect and remind children of
these rules and expectations. If you see a potential problem starting with a child, please alert a
staff member.
What you will see in our classroom:
Staff will use positive redirection. For example,

instead of saying Dont run in the classroom,
you will hear Remember, we walk in the
classroom so we dont fall or get hurt or
Remember to use your walking feet.
Staff avoid using the word No which helps children learn that mistakes happen and that
he/she will not be scolded for making one which encourages the development of a childs
self-confidence.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN THE CLASS

In the High/Scope Daily Routine the teachers give preschoolers a sense of control over the events
of the day by planning a consistent routine that enables children to anticipate what happens next.
Central elements of the preschool daily routine include the Plan-Do-Review sequence (planning
timework timerecall time), small and large group times, greeting time, and outside time. How
our staff develop the daily schedule depends upon the programs hours of operation and childrens
needs.
Large Group/Greeting time: Large group time brings children and adults together for a brief
period to exchange information and talk about what will happen that day and reinforce learning
objectives. Children gather together with adults for companionship, sharing and the enjoyment of
doing things together as a community.
Activities include:
Songs
Story/book sharing
Music and movement experiences
Review of daily activities
You may assist the teacher during this time by:
Singing along
Reading the story
Sitting on the rug with the children and role modeling how to participate
Small Group Time: Small group time provides children an intimate setting where they are given
their own materials, make choices about how to use them and talk to one another and the adult
about what they are doing. During this time, the children work with their assigned teacher who
introduces the learning objective(s) for the day and guides their learning through the activity
planned.
Activities include:
Stringing beads or other objects according to patterns

Mixing colors to explore cause and effect created with various art mediums
Exploring concepts of measurements by making play dough
Going around the group and interacting with the children

Encouraging exploration of materials
Asking open-ended questions about their work (See examples on page 5)
Joining in childrens exploration of materials
Outside Time: During this time, the children are able to participate in outdoor play to use their
gross motor skills and get their bodies exercised. There is also one activity of focus planned each
day where the children may practice a certain skill or participate in a cooperative play activity such
as soccer or parachute play. The outside environment is an extension of our indoor classroom. So
you will see learning centers developed for children to explore.
Activities include:
Musical marching band

Bean bag toss
Obstacle courses
Soccer
Preparing the materials in advance so that when the children go outside the environment is
ready for them
Asking the children if you can join their play
Being an extra set of eyes to ensure that children are playing safely
Encouraging children to participate in the activities available such as water table play,
painting at the easel, swinging, climbing, etc.
Planning Time: During this time, the children gather in smaller groups with a teacher. Children
initiate and express their plans to the teacher regarding what they intend to do during Work Time.
The teachers encourage childrens initiative and interest through asking questions related to their
plans.
Activities include:
Planning with puppets

Graphing what areas children are planning to go to
Calling friends on the phone to plan
Planning with one group

Preparing props or materials to be used such as phone, binoculars, bean bag, etc.
Asking the children questions about their plans
Work Time: During this time, the children carry out their plans and work in the different areas with
the materials of their choice. Adults join as active participants in childrens play.
Activities include:
Exploration of the learning centers

As children leave one area and go to another they re-plan with an adult
Walking around and becoming part of what children chose to work on

Asking open-ended questions (see examples on page 5)
Helping replenish materials such as refilling paint, glue, etc. from the materials supply
Recall Time: After children complete their plans they gather in smaller groups with their teacher.
Children have the opportunity to reflect and discuss what they have done and accomplished.
Adults ask questions that allow children to think about and share their experiences. Recall time is
the follow up of planning time. Therefore, the activity planned may be the same. See planning time
examples.
Lunch Time: During this time, the children will eat in a family style setting. The teachers
encourage children to try all the different types of food and talk about nutrition with them.
Teachers use this time to encourage language and conversations from all the children and
parents sitting at the table.
Helping to prepare the days lunch

Allow and encourage children to serve themselves their own food
Have all food ready and available for children on the tables
Sit and talk to the children about their day or talk about nutrition
Tooth brushing Time: After the meal, children will participate in brushing their teeth to promote
good oral hygiene.
Getting toothbrushes ready

Helping supervise the activity so that children brush their teeth appropriately and maintain
appropriate sanitary practices
Transitions: Transition is the time spent moving from one part of the daily schedule to the next,
for example, small group time to planning time, work time to recall time, hand washing to lunch
time.
Activities include:
Reading books
Participating in a planned activity such as Simon Says
Singing songs, etc.
Redirecting children to go to the next activity

Helping the children clean up
Taking charge of the hand washing activity and moving the children through the activity
through verbal prompts
Reading a book or facilitating an activity while children join the group for the next activity
