Abstract
Amebiasis is caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Most
infections are asymptomatic, but its clinical
presentations can include amebic colitis or
extraintestinal disease. Amebic liver abscess (ALA) is the
most frequent extraintestinal presentation. Due to its
high morbidity when presented as liver abscess and the
high endemicity in certain Peruvian regions, amebiasis is
another example of neglected tropical disease that mainly
affect low income populations. We present three cases of
amebic liver abscess in travelers in whom the diagnosis
was performed in an urban (non- endemic) area. We also
included a comprehensive review of the literature.
