Flavourings
In fact Eliquids consist of a mixture of avour, solvents and nicotine. The
solvents are well known glycols, and it is the avourings which are probably
present the biggest number of variables and possible issues. Vaping Factors
takes a scientic view on these questions up to date and in line with
current research.
No one can support the safety of the use of avouring substances in ecigarettes based solely on the fact that these avouring substances have
been declared safe for use in food and beverage according to their intended
use.
There are several key issues associated with the use of avouring
substances in e-cigarettes:
1. There is no apparent direct regulatory authority assigned in the main
global industrialized regions to use compounded avours in products like
e-cigarettes.
2. A variety of programs exist in various countries and geographic regions
to evaluate the safety of avouring substances for use in food. All of these
programs evaluate only under their conditions of intended use in human
food, meaning that they are evaluated only for safety upon ingestion. As
examples:
a) The FEMA GRASTM program in the USA evaluates the use of avouring
ingredients: the conditions of intended use are in food,
b) In Europe, avouring substances are evaluated by the European Food
Safety Authority solely for their use in food and feed.

c) Also consistent with this principle is the global avour safety evaluation
program conducted by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food
Additives (JECFA) that also evaluates the safety of avouring substances
solely for their use in human food.
Scientic Background
The safety of avouring substances used in food and drink intended for
human consumption is established through safety assessment paradigms
that rely on laboratory safety tests primarily designed to understand oral
ingestion toxicity, and on reasonable estimations of exposure to these
substances and their metabolites through food intake. The safety of the
uses in food for avouring substances is not automatically extended to
alternative uses, such as the avouring of e-cigarettes, without the
availability of safety data relevant to that particular application, and the
availability of an appropriate and robust safety assessment paradigm that
incorporates such data.
Regarding e-cigarettes, there are three fundamental issues that limit the
use of current avour safety evaluation paradigms and a considerable
portion of the available safety data for avouring substances.
1. The routes of avour exposure between e-cigarettes and foods are
fundamentally dierent: initial systemic exposure to avours from food
occurs primarily via the upper digestive tract, whereas for e-cigarettes it is
likely to occur via the oral cavity and possibly the upper respiratory tract.
2. There may be signicant dierences in the human body in the
disposition (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) of
avours from food and avours from e-cigarettes. This is a direct result of
the dierences in route of exposure.
3. The exposure levels, and the methodology used to estimate exposure for
avours in foods, cannot be easily extended to the use of avours in ecigarettes.

For these reasons Vaping Factors uses only avours which are free from
terpenes, diacetyl and base oils.
