Acknowledgement
At the forefront, I would like to thank Prof. J. Philip, President, Dr. Jeyakar
Vedmanickam, Director and Prof. Sam Dawson Tyagraj, Sr. Dean of the Xavier Institute
of Management & Entrepreneurship for including SUPA as part of the curriculum
thereby exposing us to the necessity of working for the betterment of the society. I was
never exposed to the actual working of an NGO before and this experience gave me
valuable insights about the way the organization works.
I also thank Mr. John Ben Prince who was the coordinator for our socially useful and
productive activity.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Naveen I. Thomas for accepting me to work at his
organization as an intern. He was a constant support and guide throughout my
internship at headstreams. I thank him for being such a great mentor and for giving me
every possible opportunity to learn and explore.
I thank my team at headstreams, particularly Ms. Cecilia, Ms. Anu, Ms. Sheela, Mr. Vinay
& Mr. Lokesh with whom I worked every day. I am grateful to them for giving their time
and support for every little help I needed and also for the immense amount of trust they
showed in my abilities.
I feel fortunate enough to have worked with such dedicated & knowledgeable people,
who enlightened me about our not so privileged society and the various ways through
which we can make some change in their lives.
I thank my friends, family and all those who have been directly or indirectly involved in
making of this report.
Above all I thank God, for providing me this opportunity to understand that how blessed
I am and my responsibility thereafter, to help those who are deprived through all
means possible.

Executive Summary
At Xavier Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship every student is required to take
a socially useful & productive activity (SUPA) in order to have an exposure to the
outside world which is way more different than college life.
This programme helps the students understand their responsibility towards the society,
thereby making them sensible and sensitive, besides it also provides an opportunity to
have a real time experience of how Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) work and
the various kinds of challenges faced by them. As budding managers of tomorrow this
project helps us to understand the future responsibilities we are about to handle, as
every organisation is entitled to serve some part of its profit towards the social welfare.
This project brought to our realisation the fact that through what ways and means
organizations should support these NGOs and thereby add some value to the society &
its development thereafter.
For my SUPA project I chose an organisation called headstreams- a registered society
under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act 17 of 1960. headstreams works with the
urban poor settled in the slum pockets of Bangalore, they put in their efforts for the
upliftment of women, children & youth.
In my 18 days spent at headstreams I was exposed to a lot of learning and activities
associated with the organisation, I worked with the core team on fulltime basis and also
got an opportunity to visit the various slum pockets in the city, in course of which I also
interacted with the women & children aided by and associated with the organisation.
Besides working on day to day basis I also undertook one project.
The project called Tackle was about getting corporate association with headstreams
in order to fund their child empowerment programme, under the Corporate Social
Responsibility activities mandated by Companies Act.
I worked on the project from the scratch and helped headstreams design a proposal,
which included designing and printing a brochure, a mail write-up, an introductive and
an elaborate PPT, collecting contacts of corporates and then contacting them on phone,
by mail or through walk-in in order to market and convince them for their association. I
also prepared a worksheet for headstreams of all the proceedings I made in the project
which includes every minute detail of the people I contacted so that headstreams could
maintain a follow-up with them.
In this report I have described headstreams, its various activities, the team I worked
with and my contributions to the organisation from 23rd December 2014 to 14th January
2015. The NGO also directed me to maintain a time-diary wherein I have noted my daily
activities at headstreams and the observations of the same.

Socially Useful & Productive Activities

Socially Useful and Productive Activity (SUPA) is an opportunity given to all students of
Xavier Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship, Bangalore to work towards the
benefit of the underprivileged in our society.
This unique program aims at developing a sense of responsibility towards the
development of the deprived and the destitute that would sensitize us with the issues
that these people living in the abject poverty face.
During this program we are expected to closely observe the organisation which is
working towards ta social cause and also to work with the organisations various
activities by undertaking a project which will help the target group of the society.
The program also requires us to acquire skills required in this field and inculcate values
and social culture during our stay in the organisation. We are also expected to find out
the tribulations faced by the organisation and find solution for them through our
knowledge.
This program also aims at developing a lifelong commitment on our part to contribute
positively to the millions of underprivileged section of the society in all manners
possible and help in nation building in a broad sense.

Introduction to headstreams
In the year 2008 a group of professionals came together to discuss issues and challenges
related to the life of the underprivileged in our society. The realities that were unveiled
in the course of discussions challenged them to do something about it. They formed a
Society and registered it under the Karnataka Societies Registrations Act 17 of 1960 and
named it headstreams.
The name spelt out their concern in the areas of Health, Environment and Development,
and expressed their commitment to add to the streams of development by way
of Support, Training, Research, Education and Mobilisation of Society.
The only capital they had was a genuine concern, passion and commitment to serve. The
group which included social workers, educationists and counsellors started working
among the homeless and neglected children in the market places of Bangalore by
contributing their time and expertise.

Vision
A world where every person has an opportunity to realise their inherent potential to
live a positive, confident intentional and socially productive life.

Mission
We achieve this through promoting opportunities for people to explore and develop
their capabilities in an environment that provides security, empathy and fosters
freedom through creative means and healthy social interactions.

Project Objectives
The project I undertook was mainly about marketing headstreams to the various corporates in
Bangalore. It was focussed on collecting funds for the TACKLE program under the child welfare
scheme of headstreams.
Ever since the beginning of headstreams in 2008 its work was focussed on empowerment of
women, issues regarding child welfare always was a major concern as most of the women wanted to
educate their children for a bright future which was not possible without funds.
This was also the major reason why these women took heavy loans and were stuck in the unending
cycle of interests.
With time spent with these women headstreams team came across several problems these kids
were facing and thus started the initiative TACKLE focussed on child welfare.
The main objective of my project was to search for corporate partnership of headstreams, for a
period of at least 2-3 years in order to help the NGO expand its spread in more areas of Bangalore
and Bagalkot and also to get more and more no. of volunteers to organise events and programs with
lot more of effectiveness and higher targets.
The goals to be achieved under my marketing project were:

Design a methodology for approaching the corporates to associate with the NGO
under their CSR activities quota, in terms of funds or volunteers from their
organisation
Collect all data and past records associated to the NGO in order to make a brief up
of it for the corporate negotiations also maintain an estimate of the future target of
the NGO to be met in the tenure of collaboration with the firm
Search for corporate contacts through personal, social or corporate means or any
other way possible
Communicate an impressive brief up to the corporates and fix an appointment on
phone or in person
Talk to them and convince them to join hands with the NGO for partnering with
them in the above mentioned two ways
Maintain a follow up of all communications made to any of the corporates and keep
the secretary informed of the same
Make a spread sheet with all the details of the project and the possible follow-up to
be maintained by the core team for future reference
Submit all the material used for the negotiation process and also the details and
progress report till the time I worked there

Xavier Institute Of Management & Entrepreneurship

Page 11

headstreams - towards fullness of life 2015

Methodology
The methodology had several steps which are illustrated below:
STEP 1: Preparing a detailed task plan
Firstly I prepared a detailed task plan with all kind of information required from the organisation
and the estimated time taken to finish it, which I had to submit to my guide and instructor so that he
could plan accordingly. It included

Brochure & all Promotional Materials like the hand out, the ppts etc.
The Mailer i.e. the mail write up to be forwarded
Last was the company contact collection, finalising the list and so on.

STEP 2: Making of the Brochure

The brochure consisted of a brief introduction of the NGO and then the focus was shifted to
the TACKLE initiative as it was the portion to be explained well as the funding and
volunteering was aimed at getting funds for all the initiatives under the TACKLE programme
I made a 4 page brochure as I was asked to keep it as brief as possible keeping in mind the
fact that corporates will not have much time to read a big brochure.
This brochure was to be presented at the time of meeting them in order to leave them with
the detailing of the programme and in case of a brief introduction at the time of negotiation

Step 3: Writing the mail write-up

The mailing process for contacting the corporates was the first step to initiate the
conversation for which I had to prepare a formal mail write up inviting the corporates to
invest their funds or extend help in form of volunteers to the NGO

Step 4: Making the PPT to be sent with the mail

A 4 slide PPT to be sent in the mail was decided which had a brief up about the NGO and a
short into to what headstreams is actually doing, the areas it focuses upon and the probable
reasons to join headstreams for its CSR activities

Step 5: Making the PPT to be presented while negotiation with the corporates

A slightly elaborative PPT was prepared basically focussing on the aid the corporates could
give the expected duration, the time period, the amount & the mode or form of aid

Step 6: Collecting contacts and contacting them

I started with contacting all the contacts I had by my personal sources there after I collected
other corporate contacts by thoroughly searching the websites and other sources like
college, friend working in Bangalore and so on
Thereafter I started mailing all of them once I briefed them up on a telephonic conversation

Xavier Institute Of Management & Entrepreneurship

Page 12

headstreams - towards fullness of life 2015

Step 7: Walk-In talk with the corporates

As I was not having much time and my instructor asked me to have some experience of
directly marketing your product/service I finally decided to go for walk-in proposal of our
need to partner with them
I started with Indiranagar itself where I went to Big Basket Head Office and negotiated with
the CSR person, thereafter I visited BAGHMANE Teck Park in CV Raman Nagar where I got an
opportunity to talk to the HP person concerned, I also visited other corporates there which
included HSBC, Oracle, Texas Instruments, Cognizant & PWC
The next day same was followed but the destination was MG Road where I visited the head
offices of HSBC, Citi Bank, Vijaya Bank, Park Hotel & Canara Bank also I went to The Oberoi
and Vivanta by Taj wherein I was successful to get contacts, lately the same day I went to
Flipkart head office in Kormanagala

Step 8: Submission of the follow up sheet

On the last day I prepared a Google sheet of all the contacts collected and prepared a followup plan for the NGO to keep track of an update the progress of The TACKLE Corporate
Partnership

Findings & Analysis

All through my days spent at headstreams I learnt a lot of things which added so many uncountable
experiences and insights about the social factors and the people, although it was my first experience
of working with an NGO I made remarkable findings which no paper work or journal & article
reading could have ever given me. Some of my major findings are:

Came across the minor to major difficulties faced in conducting such challenging social
activities and the gap between planning to do something and actually doing something for
the society
Realised the fact that the very posh looking areas in Bangalore like Indiranagar have hidden
slum pockets in their heart which are generally never expected to exist unless explored,
these are mainly houses of those daily workers who work in these posh houses but do not
have proper food and shelter for themselves
Came across the tedious process of bringing up an NGO from certification to operation and
the most important part funding
While making the e-copy of the surveys conducted in the SHG groups I found the poor
condition of girls in the society, who want to study & learn but are unable to do so, their
high aspirations but their inability to proceed towards their dreams
In my visit to government schools at the time of Tackle Caravan and for the school
partnership programme of headstreams I found out the various problems children are
facing like violence at home, sexual abuse, no security and love from family, they are good
learners its just that they do not have a helping hand, I am glad headstreams is a support to
them
In the process of going through the feedback form of Tackle Caravan by the volunteers I
came across terrifying facts about the inner life of these small kids like brutal family violence,
poor living conditions, lack of sex education etc. which they opened up to volunteers with a
bit of love and care shared
In my visit to the Inauguration of the Foundation course programme I got an opportunity to
interact with these women wherein I realised their aspirations to learn additional courses to
just educate their children by earning some extra pennies, I also came to know about the
family support they had; it was both negative and positive, it was great to find that they still
have the zeal to learn even after facing so many obstacles
I could analyse the fact that women who earn are not aware about the proper saving of their
money which they want to for the higher education of their kids, most of them are not much
aware of the proceedings of the bank and those who are, do not trust it, when headstreams
offered them to be their bank they merrily agreed and are taking huge benefits out of the
saving schemes and revolving funds
While doing my marketing project fundraising for TACKLE I came across the fact that
scarcity of funds for non-government aided organisation is a major obstacle in their
expansion and the spread of the noble work they are doing for the society

Xavier Institute Of Management & Entrepreneurship

Page 25

headstreams - towards fullness of life 2015

In the process of meeting the corporates I came across the fact that very few corporates are
interested into helping the NGOs, most of them just stick to the 2% mandate imposed by the
government as a duty rather than a responsibility
From analysis point of view I think headstreams as an NGO is in real great hands, a team
which is very much sincere of the quality of their work and most importantly the time and
energy they dedicate for such a noble cause
The Women development programmes are fairly run and the SHGs are also a very
productive step taken in this regard as it has helped hundreds of needy women
From the various press releases of headstreams on Lets Play making a buzz! In the
newspapers like Deccan Herald & Indian Express focussing on more play areas for kids in
Bangalore it is evident about the change required and the endeavours done in this regard

Conclusion
headstreams is an NGO in Bangalore, India working with women and youth on livelihood
development; and on positive mental health with children & adolescents. Its major objective is to
fulfil the dreams of those children who were born less fortunate and have dreams but no means to
fulfil them, besides it also paves path for those women who in the backdrop of poverty have the
strong determination to earn more and more and provide their children with the quality of
education which would help them blossom with knowledge and skill sets so that they never face the
similar problems which they themselves faced in their own childhood.
headstreams grants help and service to the needful without regard to race, creed, religion, sex
economic status, or national origin. The NGO respects the privacy of the children & women it serves.
It maintains a good record of all the data sources and draws a very good analysis of it in taking its
future steps, in all possible ways it is trying to spread more and more awareness of this social cause
to youth and is incorporating them in the proceedings through every possible means. The NGO is
also spreading its area of work to rural areas by focussing on major problems like sanitation, health
& hygiene and development and awareness building of the rural as well as the urban poor.
The major area of focus is women and children and the NGO actually works to enrich the human
experience with hope, strength and joy. The NGO is on its way to spread more and more with
availability of sufficient funds and volunteers in near future, in its endeavour to make a better India
it has put in all effort and resources possible at this point of time and is planning to do the same in
the years to come.
It brings inspiration and optimism to the unprivileged, it is their guiding light in a dark den, and it is
the ray of hope for many who never knew which path to take. I love working for children and being a
women I always want to see women in a much stronger position in my country so this experience
was a real beautiful, enriching & holistic journey for me. These days spent added so much value to
my thoughts and also made me aware of my responsibilities which I had forgotten in the busyness of
life. I appreciate headstreams and their endeavours and I would be glad to visit it again in future.

Recommendations
The NGO works with full excellence as per my opinion but as an intern based on my observation
I would like to give the following recommendations:

The media visibility of the Ngo could be increased by regular publishing in newspapers
and frequent updates on the blog
Some of the contextual mistakes and spelling errors both on the website and the blog
could be proof read before updating
The mode of language used could be both English and the regional languages for all
meetings and real time exposures to create ease of understanding and thereby analysing
facts for anyone associated to the NGO who is not efficient in the regional languages
The social media visibility can be improved greatly through the youth folks associated to
the NGO as it is a very good platform to advertise with very less funds involved
If sufficient funds are available the NGO could surely look forward to increasing its
spread to other parts of the nation rather than sticking to Bangalore alone
If funds permit the NGO can hire an analyst who can put in all data, as in related to
allocation of funds, statistics of year on year growth, comparative and achieved growth
analysis etc. which could be used for internal purpose as well as could be put on the
website as well, it would give a greater insight to anyone who wants to donate or
participate in any kind of monetary partnership with the NGO including the corporates
