SCIENTIFIC PORTFOLIO
1. CURRENT SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

Summary of own main research achievements

I have extensive experience from both basic science and clinical studies and I have developed new
concepts and made significant contributions to the field of renal and cardiovascular research, with a
specific focus on nitric oxide regulation and oxidative stress. This is reflected by more than 50
publications in leading international journals in this field. I have published several original articles in
international peer-reviewed scientific journals, as first or senior author, including Proc Natl Acad Sci
USA (IF: 10), Antioxidants & Redox Signaling (IF: 8), Hypertension (IF: 7.6), Cardiovascular
Research (IF: 6), Diabetologia (IF: 7).
After completed postdoctoral studies in USA, I have established my own research group at Karolinska
Institutet (Department of Physiology and Pharmacology). Today I am the principle investigator of a
very successful team, consisting of 3 postdoctoral fellows and 4 PhD students. Over the years I have
developed an extensive network and today my group have ongoing collaborations with world-leading
scientists e.g. in Sweden, Germany, Portugal, Australia, China and USA. These successful
collaborations contribute to the feasibility of my research, but more importantly, they will be
important when translating the results and the understanding from our projects into clinical practice.
My group has access to a broad methodological platform that enables the aspects of integrative
physiology and pharmacology. I have developed or modified unique and sophisticated techniques to
characterize microvascular function in the kidney and in pancreas. These include renal autoregulation
studies in vivo and microperfusion studies in vitro to study vascular reactivity and signaling in renal
afferent arterioles or islet arterioles.
I have received several prizes and been invited as speaker or as chair at many international
conferences of high rank. Moreover, I am currently a member of the editorial boards of American
Journal of Physiology Renal Physiology, ISRN Nephrology, Journal of Nephrology and Therapeutics,
World Journal of Hypertension and World Journal of Nephrology. The contribution to the field of
nephrology and hypertension is also reflected by my recent review about Renal Autoregulation in
Health and Disease. Moreover, together with colleagues in USA (Georgetown University), we have
filed a patent related to a novel treatment of metabolic disorders. A corresponding manuscript is
currently being considered for publication in Cell Metabolism.
I also have collaboration with the community, as evident by membership in health organizations such
as World Action on Salt and Health (WASH) and the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). In these
two organizations we aim to achieve a reduction in dietary salt intake around the world and to enhance
the lives of everyone with, at risk of or affected by kidney disease.
Another achievement, and very important contribution to my field of research, is a comprehensive
review about Renal Autoregulation in Health & Disease published in the prestigious journal
Physiological Reviews with a 5-year impact factor of 38.7. In the same issue our figure was selected
as the cover image. I am the first and corresponding author on this paper, which has been written in
collaboration with two of my colleagues in USA. This work has a clear link to my ongoing research
and emphasizes the important role of the renal microvasculature in development or progression of
hypertension, renal disease and diabetes.

Collaboration with the Community:
-World Action on Salt and Health (WASH)
As a member of this organization we aim to achieve a reduction in dietary salt intake around the
world from the current intake of 10-15g/day to the WHO target of 5g/day. This fall in salt intake and
the resulting fall in blood pressure would lead to major reductions in both incidents of, and deaths
from Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). We have discussions with the food industry and government and
also try to reach out to the households. This spring WASH Sweden organized a joint meeting together
with Livsmedelsverket in Uppsala to discuss the risks associated with high salt intake, and how to act.

As a member of this organization we aim to enhance the lives of everyone with, at risk of or affected
by kidney disease. NKF, a major voluntary nonprofit health organization, is dedicated to preventing
kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families
affected by kidney disease and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation. NKF has
been providing help and hope to kidney patients and their families since 1950. Today, with local
offices across the country, NKF is meeting the growing public health challenge of chronic kidney
disease with a range of vital programs and services for the public, patients and healthcare
professionals.
