SHIP STABILITY II
Total Marks: 100 (Intenal-25, External Exam-75) Pass Marks: 60
UNIT I:
WALL SIDED FORMULA:
Understand the distinction between stability at small and large angles of heel by
considerations of the wall-sided formula;
Calculation of the angle of loll and GM at the angle of loll for ship that is unstable;
Calculate the angle of list caused by a transverse shift of weight when the GM is
zero.
UNIT II
FACTORS AFFECTING THE SHAPE OF THE CURVE OF STATICAL
STABILITY:
Understand the effect of a change of KG on the curve of statical stability, transverse
shift of weight (list) on the curve of statical stability; Change of freeboard on the
curve of statical stability; ship beam on the curve of statical stability; Trim on the
curve of statical stability.
Appreciate the differences between stability of a ship in the light and loaded
conditions.

UNIT III
THE INTERNATIONAL GRAIN CODE:
Understand the effect on the curve of statical stability of a shift of a solid bulk cargo
in general; know the Grain Code assumptions with respect to an anticipated shift of a
bulk grain; know the grain loading information to be supplied; know the intact
Stability criteria for a ship with a Document of Authorisation carrying bulk grain.
Understand how compensation for the vertical component and the horizontal
component (heeling arm curve) of assumed grain shift is determined. Understand
the procedure to check compliance with the intact stability requirements of the code.
UNIT IV:
BILGING:
Calculate the change in draught and stability of a box shaped vessel when a empty
amidships compartment is bilged.
Calculate the effects of bilging an empty amidships compartment with a watertight
(double bottom).
Calculate the effects of bilging a compartment when permeability is less than 100%.
Calculate the draughts when an end compartment becomes bilged.
Calculate the list when an amidships side compartment is bilged, permeability
100%.
Review the principles of bilging to be applied to different flooding scenarios.
UNIT V:
SHEAR FORCES AND BENDING MOMENTS IN SHIPS
Understand how shear forces and bending moments arise in a vessel floating in still
water.
Producing simple shear force and bending moment diagrams for box-shaped vessels
floating on an even keel in still water.

Understand how stress data may be represented on modern stress loading programs.
Introduction to Lodicator; Requirements for a lodicator as per SOLAS, Class
requirements, Uses of a Lodicator as decision support system on board ships,
Certification of lodicators, back up arrangements for lodicators in case of failure,
Record keeping of lodicator printout Performance check, Importance of lodicator
instruction manual.
Acquire proficiency in using lodicator software to perform simulated cargo
operations.
Intact Stability & Damage Stability requirements for both Cargo & Passengers Ships
as applicable in SOLAS & Load line Conventions.
Requirements for Watertight bulkheads, for both Passenger & Cargo ships (SOLAS
Convention)
Outline knowledge of deterministic and probabilistic methods used in damage
stability advantages & disadvantages.
Additional damage stabillity requirements for Ro Ro ships.
