Ukraine Energy 2016-2030

Essentials of Ukraine Energy Sector
2017
Ukraine aims to integrate with
the European power grid and
gas network to make the
country part of the European
energy market by 2017.

2020
Ukraine undertook to achieve
by 2020 the 11 percent share
of energy from renewable
sources in its gross final
consumption of energy.

Key Takeaways

2020-2030
A major increase in electricity demand to 307
billion kWh per year by 2020 and 420 billion
kWh by 2030 is envisaged, and government
policy was to continue supplying half of this
from nuclear power.

2030
According to the basic scenario
in the Strategy, electricity
demand in Ukraine in 2030 will
be 50 percent higher than the
2010 level.

Ukraine is an energy-scarce country,

importing about 70 percent of its own
natural gas consumption.

The Energy Strategy of Ukraine up to 2030 specifies that adoption of

renewable energy sources is an important factor for raising the energy
security level and for reducing the energy sectors environmental
anthropogenic impact.

Share of renewable energy sources in the

total balance of installed capacities up to
about 20 percent by 2020, which under the
basic scenario is 12.1 GW
The basic electricity demand scenario
envisages about 40 percent decrease in the
gross domestic products electric intensity.

Large-scale utilisation of the renewable energy sources potential in

Ukraine is not only of domestic but also of great international
importance as a weighty factor for counteraction to global climate
change in general and for improvement of the overall energy security of
Europe.

According to the basic scenario in the

Strategy, electricity demand in Ukraine in
2030 will be 50 percent higher than the 2010
level.

Ukraine is heavily dependent on nuclear energy it has 15 reactors

generating about half of its electricity.

2016
Ukraine is an energy-scarce country, importing about 70 percent of its own natural gas consumption in 2016.
Today Ukraine is developing shale gas deposits and hoping to export this to western Europe by 2020 through the established pipeline infrastructure
crossing its territory from the east.

2018

Ukraine could receive gas from the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipeda since 2018, Minister of Energy Rokas Masiulis said
at the Lithuania-Ukraine Presidents' Council, informs LETA/ELTA. According to Masiulis, LNG could be supplied from Klaipeda to Ukraine
starting 2018.
Lithuania is also ready to help Ukraine protect its interests from the exploitation by monopolists, increase the use of renewable
energy and augment energy efficiency.

2030

Please be informed that the official version of Energy Strategy till 2030 was published at the website of Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine
According to the Strategy, the planned (possible) amount of installed power capacity of different RES power plants in 2030 should be as follows:
Wind energy: 3-4 Gigawatt;
Solar energy: 4 Gigawatt;
Small hydro: 1-1,5 Gigawatt of electricity and 10-15 Gigawatt of heat.
These figures are below real potential and evaluation of a number of international expert organizations. However, hope that it will not hamper the
development of the industry.
