1. Experiment No.:

EC (EE) 391/04

2. Name of the Experiment:

Study of class A, C & Push pull amplifier

3. Objective of the Experiment:

4. Working Principle: A power amplifier usually constitutes the last stage of a multistage
amplifier system and serves to supply sizable power to the load. The
efficiency of a power amplifier is the ratio of the ac output power to the power delivered by
the supply source. The efficiency increases from Class A to Class C via Class AB and Class B
amplifiers. The operations of classes AB, B and C are nonlinear and so generate harmonics of
the signal frequency at the output current.
Since a power amplifier delivers a large output power, a power
transistor operates at higher collector currents and voltages than a transistor serving as a
voltage amplifier.
A power amplifier handles a large signal and the excursion of the
operating point may go beyond the linear region of the amplifier active device characteristics.
A graphical method using the load line id therefore employed in the analysis of a power
amplifer.

6. Procedure for conducting the Experiment:

A.) Class A Amplifier
i. Make the circuit as shown in fig.
ii. Feed a 1 KHz signal of r.m.s value 5 mV from audio frequency generator to the input
of the training board. Vary the load (use band switch knob provided on the training
board) and measure power output and total distortion for each value of the load. Plot
the power output and the total distortion vs. load resistance; hence find the optimum
value of load resistance.
iii. Using the optimum load obtained from step 2 measure the power output and the total
distortion.
iv. Give a constant signal 5 mV r.m.s from the audio frequency generator and measure
output at the lowest possible frequency. Increase the frequency in suitable steps until a
maximum frequency is reached and note the output at each step and hence find the half
power frequency f1 and f2
B.) Class C and Push-Pull Amplifier
i. Make the circuit as shown in fig.
ii. Set Vi nput = 50 mV (say), using the signal generator.
iii. Vary the frequency of the function generator from 0 to 1 MHz at a regular steps and
note down the corresponding output voltage.
iv. Calculate gain (dB) = 20 log 10 (Vo/Vi).
v. Plot the graph : Gain Vs Frequency.
vi. Calculate the efficiency, = Po/Pin.
