Introduction
Method of Approach
For a bead-on-plate test with a
given energy input the cooling rate
will increase as the thickness in
creases. Above a certain thickness,
however, the cooling rate becomes
independent of the thickness. This
thickness can be termed the satura
tion thickness'. The saturation thick
ness will depend on the energy input
and on the temperature at which the
cooling rate is measured. For a high
ten)perature the saturation thickness
would be quite small whereas for a
low temperature it would be greater.
In a similar manner the hardness
(in the HAZ or the welo metal) will in
crease as the thickness increases (at
least for those steels in which hard
ness varies with cooling rate. This in
cludes C, C-Mn and low alloy steels).
Again there will be a saturation thick
ness above which the hardness will
not increase. In essence the program
consists of measuring the saturation
thickness for hardness and com
paring it, with the saturation thickness
for cooiing rates measured at differ
ent temperatures.

The program therefore falls into
two parts: firstly, the study of cooling
rates in welds over a range of thick
nesses and energy inputs and sec
ondly, the study of HAZ and weld
metal hardnesses as a function of
thickness and energy input. In this
study no attempt was made to ex*
amine the effect of preheat.

Theoretical Background
The theoretical basis of heat flow in
weiding has been avaiiabie for some
time (Refs. 5,6) and has recentiy been
summarized (Ref. 7). In thin piates,
heat fiow conditions are two dimen
sional (2D) and the cooling rate on the
weid centeriine is given by:

, Experimental
The cooling cycles of bead-on; plate welds using the submerged arc
I'process were measured using PtiPt/13% Rh thermocouple. The plates
were a minimum of 12 in. wide which
allowed temperatures down to 100 C
'to be measured without edge effects.
'The thermocouple was manually inI serted into the weld pool through the
I slag immediately behind the arc and
the output of the thermocouple was
>recorded* on a fast response strip
.chart recorder.
The loose flux and slag were not
removed from the weld during the
cooling period. Most of the heat used
, to melt the flux is conducted into the
; weld at high temperature because of
Ithe intimate contact between the
! metal and the slag and because of the
insulating effect of the loose flux
, above the slag. The heat remaining in
the slag when it detaches from the
weld is small compared with the total
heat input and thus the submerged
arc process has a high efficiency
(-95% ).
Thicknesses from 0.24 in. to 4 in.
and energy inputs from 4.4 to 126
kJ/in.\were covered. The weld metal
was a donventional silicon killed
C/Mn weld metal giving an approx
imate chemistry of 0.1 %C, 1.0%Mn,
0.3%Si.

published data. Equations 5 and 6
enable the saturation thickness Ps* to
be determined as a function of energy
input at each temperature. Equating 5

F le x ib ility factors and stress indices fo r elbows and curved pipe loaded w ith an
a rb itrary com bination o f in-plane, out-of-plane and torsional bending moments are
developed for use w ith the sim plified analyses procedures o f present-day design
codes and standards. A n existing a n a ly tica l m ethod was m odified for use in, cal
culating these factors, the equations were program m ed for the IB M -360 com puter
and computed results were compared w ith experim ental d ata to establish the ade
quacy of the m odified method. P aram etric studies were then perform ed to obtain
desired inform ation. The results are presented in both tab u la r and g raph ical form .
A pproxim ate equations o f best fit, developed from the tabulated values, are pre
sented in a form w hich can be used directly in the codes and standards. The
present equations are s lig h tly more conservative th an the ones in current use.
However, experim ental and a n a ly tic a l studies now in progress m ay indicate
further m odifications in the stress indices and fle x ib ility factors fo r elbows.
