Latin America is Major

Player in Coatings Market

any of our readers will be attending the Latin America Coatings

Show in Mexico this month. To complement the show, Latin
America correspondent, Charles Thurston took an in depth
look at this important market.
Latin American Paint and Coatings Market Rebounds (page 39) reports on the estimated $9.2 billion Latin American market for paint and
coatings. According to Thurston, the Latin America market is in rebound
mode, expanding again this year a few percentage points faster than overall
economic growth. While growth rates differ among the four largest country
markets Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia the outlook is strong
for each of them. The growth of Latin Americas paint and coatings industry has been projected at six percent per year through 2016 by Englewood,
Colorado-based IHS.
The largest recent acquisition in Mexico and the most important in
the region of late was Sherwin-Williams $2.3 billion purchase of Comex,
Mexicos largest paint company. The deal made S-W the leading paint company in North America.
The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Fitch Ratings downgraded Sherwin-Williams by one notch based on expected high leverage in view
of the companys pending acquisition of Comex.
S-W agreed in November to pay $2.34 billion for Comex, whose paints
and other coatings are sold in Latin America, the U.S. and Canada. The
transaction is expected to close during the latter part of the second quarter.
Fitch said Sherwin-Williams will see high leverage following the acquisition and integration risks associated with such a large transaction. Fitch
expects the company will reduce its debt levels in the next 24 months.
The article reported that the ratings also incorporate the companys
leading market position in the architectural coatings industry, a unique
distribution platform, the breadth and depth of its product offerings, and
strong management team, according to the firm. Risk factors include leadbased paint litigation cases against Sherwin-Williams, volatile raw materials costs and the companys relatively aggressive growth strategy.
Last month, Sherwin-Williams reported its first-quarter earnings rose 16
percent as increased sales from paint stores and the global-finishes group
helped improve margins.
For further information on the impact of this acquisition be sure to
check out our Top Companies Report next month. This annual report is
one of our most popular features. Our staff has been busy compiling the
latest information on the top manufacturers of paints, coatings, adhesives

As We Go To Press

Reactive Surfaces Launches Worlds First SelfDecontaminating Coating to Protect Firearms,

Equipment and Soldiers from Chemical Agents

Austin-based bioengineering company

Reactive Surfaces announced the general
availability of WMDtox, the worlds first
self-decontaminating coating that protects firearms, vehicles, equipment and
uniforms by neutralizing organophosphorous chemical agents such as sarin.
The last time U.S. forces fought a
chemical war was many decades ago,
and most of the anti-chemical-warfare
technology that is being used by the
U.S. military is unproven against todays agents, said Steve McDaniel,
chief innovation officer of Reactive
Surfaces. We are making WMDtox
available today in response to escalations in the Middle East and the very
real threat that American soldiers will
be confronted with chemical agents in
the near future.
The U.S. Army presently buys more
than $200 million worth of a 40-yearold coating for its vehicles and equipment. Chemical Agent Resistant Coating
(CARC) was designed to withstand
highly caustic and corrosive cleaning
agents in the event a vehicle was contaminated with a chemical agent. The
company reported that in recent months
the Army has de-certified all vendors
CARC coatings and is in the process of
re-certifying them. Not the least reason
for this is a recent finding that CARC
traps and slowly off-gasses deadly nerve
agents such as those now being used in
Syria. This leaves troops exposed even
long after an initial chemical attack.
WMDtox is a clear coating that
has been specially formulated to meet
military specs for CARC overcoats.
Reactive Surfaces is providing WMDtox
to Mississippi-based weapons coating
company, Birdsong Firearms, as a weapons coating for military personnel and
first-responders.
WMDtox creates a safer environment for war fighters and first

responders by mitigating the immediate impact of contact with nerve agents,

according to Reactive Surfaces. It allows rapid reclamation of contaminated
equipment and can be applied months
in advance. The ability to prophylactically coat surfaces that may be exposed
to nerve agents increases the likelihood

of survival of the individual who may be

required to touch such surfaces.
There is an active chemical war ongoing in Syria, McDaniel said. We must
assume that our troops will soon be in
a chemical war scenario and we cannot
send our sons and daughters into harms
way without protection. CW

PPG Opens Automotive

Coatings Development and
Application Center
PPG Industries recently held a ceremony
to celebrate the opening of its new automotive coatings development and application center in Tianjin, China. This
facility is the first of its kind locally, and
it will focus on the development of automotive coatings in China.
The ceremony also celebrated the
opening of PPG Coatings (Tianjin) Co.,
Ltd.s new waterborne coatings manufacturing facility. The Tianjin plant is PPGs
largest coatings manufacturing facility
globally, and the expansion significantly
increases the plants production capacity

for waterborne coatings.

We are pleased to celebrate the completion of this critical expansion project
in China, said Cynthia Niekamp, PPG
senior vice president, automotive OEM
coatings. Chinas automotive manufacturing industry is experiencing dramatic
growth, and in light of new environmental protection regulations, the increased
demand for eco-friendly waterborne automotive coatings continues to drive the
expansion of PPGs business here.
Last year, the Regulation on the
Access Management of Passenger Vehicle
Manufacturers and Products went into
effect, requiring that all automotive
basecoats and topcoats used in manufacturing have waterborne formulas, setting
a new entry threshold for automakers. As
a result, PPGs waterborne coatings technologies have become increasingly popular with automakers in China.
Following the environmental protection policies stipulated by the Chinese
government, we estimate that waterborne coatings use on newly built vehicles in China will increase from 40
percent of new builds to more than 60
percent within the next five years, said
Vincent Robin, PPG vice president, automotive coatings, Asia Pacific. PPG is
well positioned to help automakers in
China increase their use of waterborne
coatings products and technologies. For
example, the B1:B2 premium compact
process is an innovative waterborne
coatings technology that enables our
customers to eliminate the primer layer
and reduce the total cost of painting a
car, as well as the total weight of the vehicle for fuel efficiency.
In addition to the capacity expansion,
the new development and application
center is equipped with advanced equipment to simulate the automatic car painting processes in a shop, which is another
example of introducing PPGs best practices to China, Robin added.

Surya Rugs, where he currently has a line
of floor coverings and accessories.
Mike really got us thinking; his passion for research and finding a contextual reference to illustrate his designs is
one reason his work is so compelling,
said Andersson.
Farrells presentation, Connecting
the Dots, compared his method of developing creative concepts to that of the series of dots that comprise a vintage comic
book illustration, known as the Ben-Day
dots printing process. Observed individually, the dots and concepts seem to
have no meaning or reference. Observed
at arms length, the dots and concepts
take shape, creating a comprehensive
picture or design.
We try to take a similar approach
with designers and manufacturers who
visit our Global Color and Design
Center, Andersson said. Creating the
big picture from smaller yet important
elements can help our customers succeed
through innovative color and finish options that allow them to improve their
products and, ultimately, delight their
customers.
Services offered through the SherwinWilliams Global Color and Design Center
include trend and finishes forecasting,
color consulting, color palette assessment
and recommendations, market-specific

five years to tap demand there.

Vice-president
Worawat
Chaiyosburana said the company is studying ways to set up
its first factory abroad, with Indonesia
offering potential as Aseans biggest market. Beger will partner with Siam Cement
Group, Thailands top industrial conglomerate and which will provide sales
channels for Beger products.
With limited warehouse space, only
80-90 percent of production capacity
is being used even during peak periods,
the company reported. But the company
plans to expand warehouse space and
apply automation to improve efficiency,
so the utilization rate should rise by 1.5
times. Plant expansion will start at yearend and conclude in 2015.
Some 85 percent of Begers customers are in the retail sector, 10 percent are
in projects and 5 percent are international customers. Export markets include
Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia
and the Maldives.
Once the Asean single market begins
in 2016, exports are predicted to grow to
20 percent of the companys sales.
Even before the AEC takes place,
potential in the foreign markets is quite
high, said Chaiyosburana. However, we
want to grow at a slow pace and keep our
image as a premium brand. Therefore,
well take the time to select our business
partners carefully.
Begers products include those in the
medium and premium price ranges, with
premium accounting for 60 percent of
overall sales. Beger forecasts revenue
growth of 20 percent this year from 4
billion baht last year.
Chaiyosburana said the overall market
for paint is expected to grow by 5-10 percent
this year, up from 19 billion baht in 2012.
This is due to continued growth in the real
estate sector, as all developers have ongoing projects, many of which can be found
outside Bangkok, he said. Meanwhile,
consumer confidence, increased purchasing
power and growing demand in the repainting market have contributed to the overall
growth of the paint industry.
Beger has a 20 percent share of the
19-billion-baht building paint market,
second only to TOA, which dominates

Jotun To Phase Out Lead

Chromates From All
Formulations
Jotun is scheduled to phase out lead
chromates in 2014. Jotun will not only
comply with new EU REACH regulations
but also take a global position when lead
chromates are phased out from all formulations for all product categories.
However, Jotuns project manager Jens
Christoffer Markmanrud noted that lead
chromates are still legal in many markets
where the company is active. This global
phase out applies to paints and coatings
in all segments, worldwide, he said. It
is a big step, but we are confident that
by substituting lead chromates with safer, high performing alternatives, we can
make a big difference.
The phase out is consistent with

AMS 3095A for

AkzoNobel Direct to Metal
Paint System
AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings has
reported qualification to Aerospace
Material Specification AMS 3095A of a
Direct to Metal (DTM), Base Coat/Clear
Coat system.
A Direct to Metal system eliminates
the need to use any kind of metal pretreatment such as alodine, solgel or wash
primer technologies. The primer is applied directly to the clean Scotch-Brited
substrate. The primer itself provides the
necessary adhesion and corrosion resistance to meet the stringent specification
requirements.
The DTM system, composed of
Aerodur LV 2114 and Aerobase Base
Coat/Clear Coat, is the first of its kind
to receive the AMS 3095A qualification, passing the stringent testing of
the SAE aerospace standards for high
gloss exterior paint systems for commercial fleet maintenance.
The AMS 3095A qualification marks
a new opportunity for customers to improve the efficiency of aircraft maintenance. The DTM paint system eliminates
mixed fleet complexities and can be applied on any type of commercial aircraft,
whatever the climate and anywhere in
the world. The paint system provides
easy strip-ability within the typical
MRO requirements.
Key factors demonstrating the benefits of the DTM system are reduction in
process times, resulting in shorter AOG
times, simplicity and reduced maintenance costs.
The environmentally progressive
Aerobase Base Coat/Clear Coat system
has earned AkzoNobel high praise from
aircraft painters for reliability, ease of
use, reduced drying times and superb
gloss, according to the company.

PPG Wins 2013 Automotive

News PACE Award for
Andaro Tint Dispersions
PPG Industries was named a 2013
Automotive News PACE Award winner

for its Andaro tint dispersions. This

marks the ninth time PPG has received
the award, which honors automotive
suppliers innovations in products,
manufacturing processes and information technology.
A winner in the materials process category, which recognizes innovations that
have significant market impact and act
as game changers in the automotive
industry, the Premium Andarotint dispersions enable automotive manufacturers
to achieve more vibrant colors, especially
in the flop (horizontal) angle. Andaro
tint dispersions achieve a deep, pure and
more chromatic color space than do traditional pigments, helping accentuate the
feature lines and design characteristics of
the vehicle.
PPG is honored to receive the PACE
Award once again, as it highlights the
innovative spirit of our company,
said Cynthia Niekamp, PPG senior
vice president, automotive OEM coatings. Andaro tint dispersions are another example of PPGs dedication to
improving customers paint processes
and enable automotive manufacturers
to express their brands identities with
unique color spaces.

InsulStar Spray Foam

Adhesive Scores Highest in
Approval for Miami-Dade
High Velocity HurricaneZones
NCFIs InsulStar SPF Adhesive recently
received the highest score in its category
in Miami-Dade product approval process.
InsulStar had Florida product approval
for some time now, but the more rigorous
Miami-Dade NOA 12-0810.09 for cladding and wood connector makes it best
in class for High Velocity Hurricane
Zones (HVHZ).
Wind uplift is caused by the introduction of wind pressure underneath the roof
deck where it can cause the roof assembly to pull away from the rafters literally
blowing, or tearing, the roof off the building. When added to the underside of the
roof deck InsulStar enhances the connection strength of the existing roof system,
which helps mitigate the effects of wind
uplift pressure, according to the company.

14 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

InsulStars score of 142.5 psf wind

uplift pressure is highest in its category,
said Jason Hoerter, PE, RRO, product
manager for NCFI. Anyone living in an
HVHZ area knows the majority of damage from hurricanesmoisture intrusion,
ceiling collapse, mold, and wall damageis from roof failures. Spray-applied
InsulStar adhesive is qualified as a roof
connector, and a secondary water barrier, so two-products-in-one. That means
great things for the homeowner: they get
peace of mind knowing the chance of
their roof being blown off by wind uplift in hurricanes is greatly reduced, and
they save on their insurance premiums as
companies offer cost reductions based on
the amount of wind uplift mitigation and
secondary water barrier enhancements
made by the homeowner.

RPM Provides Update

on Bondex Asbestos
Proceeding
RPM International Inc. has reported
that the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for
the District of Delaware has issued an
opinion estimating the current and future asbestos claims associated with
Bondex International, Inc. and Specialty
Products Holding Corp. at approximately $1.17 billion.
The estimation hearing represents one
step in the legal process in helping to determine the amount of potential funding
for a 524(g) asbestos trust. The debtors,
Bondex and SPHC, firmly believe that
the opinion substantially overstates the
amount of their liability and is not supported by the facts or the law. The debtors intend to appeal. It is anticipated that
the appeal process could take an additional two to three years.
On May 31, 2010, Bondex and its
parent, SPHC, filed voluntary petitions for relief under Chapter 11 of the
Bankruptcy Code in the U.S. Bankruptcy
Court for the District of Delaware.
Through the Chapter 11 proceedings, the
filing entities intend ultimately to establish a trust in accordance with Section
524(g) of the Bankruptcy Code and seek
the imposition of a channeling injunction
that will direct all future Bondex-related
and SPHC-related claims to the trust. It is
anticipated that the trust will compensate
claims at appropriate values established
by the trust documents and approved by
the bankruptcy court. CW

Market Reports

Frost and Sullivan Releases Study on

European Decorative Coatings Market

New analysis from Frost and Sullivan

Strategic Analysis of the European Market
for Decorative Paints and Coatings, finds
that the market earned revenues of more
than 9,4 billion in 2012 and estimates this
to reach 11,6 billion in 2019.
The growing construction industry in
Eastern Europe boosts the prospects of the
decorative paints and coatings market while
Norway is expected to register the highest
growth in Europe owing to the increase in
residential, commercial and infrastructural
building construction. New shopping mall,
hotel and hospital projects will open up opportunities in Turkey and Sweden.
Growing consumer interest in home
decoration and aesthetics, and the improving standards of living in Eastern Europe
have accelerated market growth, said
Frost and Sullivan Chemicals, Materials
and Food research analyst Soundarya
Shankar. Moreover, the economic slowdown has compelled consumers to save
costs by painting their own houses instead
of hiring professionals, widening the scope
of the do-it-yourself (DIY) segment.
End-user awareness on the benefits
of reduced VOC emissions has accelerated demand for waterborne decorative paints and coatings, which will
soon replace solventborne products in
interior applications.
Stringent laws, especially in the
Netherlands, that aim to prevent health
complications, have also forced manufacturers to focus on sustainable products
with low or zero VOC content.
In Western Europe, however, the market has reached saturation, and slow infrastructure growth will limit market revenues
in the short and medium terms. Besides,
materials such as bricks, tiles, glass, decorative concrete, marble and wallpapers serve
as better and cost-effective alternatives.
Escalating product prices and raw material scarcity add to the challenge, and paint
and coating manufacturers need to strengthen their relationship with raw material suppliers to avoid being affected, said Frost

and Sullivan research analyst Gabriela John

Swamy. They need to achieve sustainability
across the value chain, and raise awareness
on the advantages of environment-friendly
solutions over conventional products.
Market consolidation is a likely trend,
as larger entities look to enhance brand
visibility and expand market share.

Ceresana Analyzes the

Growth Market For Carbon
Black
The market research institute Ceresana
forecasts dynamic growth of global demand for carbon black.
According to the study, market volume is set to increase by more than 3.1
million tons until 2019. Rubber products
mainly utilize carbon black as filler material while other industrial segments need
it as a black pigment.
The automotive industry is the largest sales market for carbon black. Carbon
black is crucial in the production of tires.
This application area processed more
than 7.8 million tons of Carbon Black in
2011, said Oliver Kutsch, CEO of Ceresana.
According to the report, developments
in the automotive industry have strong
implications for the market for tires and
are also dominating in the utilization of
a range of rubber products. On average,
manufacturers of carbon black have been
able to profit from the sound development
of the automotive market in the past eight
years. Not only is the manufacturing of
new automobiles of importance, but also
the number of cars already in stock. In
2010, the threshold of 1 billion vehicles
was exceeded for the first time.
Most important growth on the market
for carbon black will be in Asia-Pacific.
Market researchers forecast consumption
and production volumes to increase at average rates of more than 4.5% p.a. each.
China is dominating the market by singlehandedly consuming more than 30% of
total global carbon black market volume.
Furthermore, this region will become

18 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

a net-exporter in the future. Production

costs and prices of carbon black are
mainly influenced by the prices for raw
materials and vary greatly due to volatile
prices for crude oil. The increase of the
average global crude oil price from $27/
barrel in 2003 to more than $108/barrel
in 2011 had caused prices to rise significantly in the past already. They rose by almost 130% in the same time frame. Even
though the rise of production costs slows
down in the upcoming years, pressure on
income margins for manufacturers of carbon black will continue to increase.

Cortecs MCI-2019 Sealer

For Concrete Structures
MCI-2019 is a non-toxic, environmentally safe, 40 percent silane, solvent-based
concrete sealer utilizing migrating corrosion inhibitor (MCI) technology from
Cortec. The MCI action allows this product to migrate through even the densest
concrete according to the company, therefore providing superior protection against
the harmful effects of corrosion. It seeks
out embedded reinforcement to form a
protective monomolecular corrosion-inhibiting layer on the steel. The migratory
inhibitor reduces further corrosion and
increases surface abrasion resistance.
MCI-2019 is a small molecule product that can penetrate deep into concrete
providing repellency by chemically reacting with the cementitious substrate with
proper application.
Treated substrates are hydrophobic and retain their original appearance. MCI-2019 seals surface pores,
which prevents intrusion of chloride and

carbonation and protects from the ingress of wind-driven rain.

Treated concrete surfaces remain fully
breathable and their natural moisture-vapor transmission is not affected. An alkaline environment such as new concrete will
catalyze the reaction and speed the formation of MCI-2019s hydrophobic surface.
Also available is MCI-2019 AG, a special version of MCI-2019 containing a
green fugitive dye to confirm application;
which fades in time. MCI-2019 blocks
carbonation and chloride ion intrusion and
helps protect against acid and chemical
attack. It does not contain nitrites, phosphates, or chromates.

BASF Adds FGuard 3D

Paint to Product Range
BASF has added new FGuard 3D paint
system to its range in Europe. With its
pore structures and grain, the newly developed system gives decorative foil for
furniture an appearance resembling real
wood. Without having to use costly real
wood, users can use foil coatings to lend
a natural wood appearance to doors and
furniture.
With the FGuard 3D method, the first
step involves using a printing system to
print a multi-color decorative pattern on
pre-impregnated paper. The new FGuard
3D pore structure paint is applied in
the final printing unit. In the next step,
a transparent topcoat is applied to the
coated paper on a paintline.
The end product, referred to as finish
foil, is used to provide furniture, doors,
and floor paneling with decorative surface protection. Coating the foils is easier,
quicker and more efficient than coating assembled furniture, for example. That saves
time and money, according to the company.

EU Energy Drive Could Boost

Struggling Architectural Coatings Sector

The architectural
coatings sector
in Europe has
hopes for a much
brighter future in
the longer term
because of two
recent pieces of
European Union
legislation.

by Sean Milmo
European Correspondent
milmocw@rodmanmedia.com

uch of the architectural coatings

market in Europe is in the doldrums
at the moment because of a slump in
the regions construction sector stemming from
a general slowdown in its economy.
During the first quarter of this year, European
sales of decorative paints of AkzoNobel, the regions decorative market leader, were 6 percent
lower than a year ago, indicating that demand
could becoming even weaker. In the last quarter of 2012 they went up 2 percent while during
the year as a whole they fell by 1 percent.
Nonetheless the architectural coatings sector in Europe has hopes for a much brighter
future in the longer term because of two recent

20 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

pieces of European Union legislation. These

both aim to make buildings, which account for
40 percent of the regions energy consumption,
much more energy efficient so that the EU can
meet its objectives for greater energy security
and big cuts in CO2 emissions.
First there is Energy Performance of
Buildings Directive (EPBD), which was due to
be incorporated into the statute books of the
EUs 27 member states last year. It requires that
all new buildings should have nearly zero-energy consumption by 2020, while incentives are
provided to encourage increases in the energy
efficiency of existing buildings.
The Energy Efficiency Directive, which
was approved late last year and is scheduled
to start coming into effect in 2014, requires
member states to draw up long term strategies for channelling investment into the renovation of the national stock of residential and
June 2013

Europe International Coatings Scene

commercial buildings, both in the private and public sectors.
Experts are predicting that the two
measures, if properly implemented, will
trigger a big revival in the depressed
European construction industry which in
turn will considerably boost demand for
architectural and decorative coatings and
other construction products.
The construction market and its suppliers like coatings and materials producers have suffered a lot from the recession,
said Adrian Joyce, campaign director of
Renovate Europe, a Brussels-based group
backed by coatings and construction materials companies which is campaigning
for greater energy efficiency in the EUs
building stock.
In 2012 construction activity in the
EU was 11 percent below what it was
in 2008 before the recession, while the
building of new houses has dropped by
80 percent in unit terms, he added. An
investment program in energy efficient
buildings would be a tremendous economic benefit to the EU construction sector and its suppliers.
The impetus behind a growth in demand for decorative and architectural
coatings from an investment program
would be even stronger if their appeal to
their purchasers was less centred on colors and surface textures.
Instead they would need to be bought
not just for their aesthetics but also their
functionalities, in particular their ability
to help reduce the energy consumption
of buildings.
Functionalities will take a more important part in architectural coatings,
predicted Marie Bleuzen of Dow Coatings
Materials in France. People will decorate
their walls not only to bring color but to
do something (more). Among these additional benefits will be the warming or
cooling of rooms, she added.
However the EU legislation on lowering the energy consumption of buildings
has had a slow start, mainly because of
the reluctance of governments at a time
of austerity to allocate more money for
renovation and other measures.
The vast majority of member states
have not transferred the EPBD legislation
into their own law, although the deadline

for the EU-wide implementation of the

directive was last year.
One of its key requirements is that EU
countries should introduce systems for
certifying the energy performance of individual homes, details of which would
be available to buyers in the housing
market. This is seen as a major incentive
to homeowners to invest in improving
the energy efficiency of their properties.
Coatings and coatings materials companies are hesitating to commit themselves to the relatively new segment in the
market because of the apparent lack of
enthusiasm among governments.
People are, for example, delaying
R&D initiatives in architectural coatings, said one source in the coatings
sector. It is inevitable that there will be
a need for new technologies for smart
coating once the energy efficiency market takes off. But we need to see what
the trends in the market will be. We
dont know yet whether there will be
regional differences in demand between
the cooler northern and warmer southern parts of Europe.
Until the EU legislation starts to have a
major impact, one option among coatings
producers has been the wider application
and improvement of existing functional
coatings technologies.
Among the most prominent of these
has been the use of cool pigments to
reflect infrared (IR) solar radiation from
building surfaces, particularly roofs, in
order to curb heat build-up during the
summer months.
IR reflective cool coatings were first
introduced in the 1990s with a limited
color range. Now a lot of development
work has been directed at giving them
a greater aesthetic attraction to complement their functionality by broadening
the variety of their colors.
Huntsman Corporation launched,
earlier this year in Europe, a titanium
dioxide-based pigment designed to
increase the infrared solar reflectance
properties of a wide range of color
coatings while providing energy efficiencies from heat control. The
pigment delivers a unique set of benefitstailored solar reflectance from
a single additive and in almost any

June 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

color customers need, said Robert

Portsmouth, Huntsmans business development manager in Europe.
Another strategy has been to develop
the properties of insulative coatings for
architectural applications. Normally
these use glass and ceramic spheres to reduce the thermal conductivity of paints.
Cabot Corp. has been marketing in
Europe a range of highly thermally insulative coatings (HiTICs) for buildings
based on silica aerogel particles, which
deliver over a third less thermal conductivity than the existing insulative coating technologies.
Possibly the biggest long-term potential in energy efficient coatings will be
achieved by those that actually generate
their own electricity. There are already
a number of R&D projects in European
universities on the use of nano-scale
structures within coatings for solar energy conversion.
One of the biggest research schemes
in solar energy coatings in Europe is
a 20 million ($30 million) joint academia-industry project in Wales, which
is majority funded by the UK and Welsh
governments. BASF is the main coatings
partner with AkzoNobel and Beckers
playing a lesser role.
The partnership, called SPECIFIC for
Sustainable Product Engineering Centre
for Innovative Functional Coating, already has a pilot plant applying to steel
and glass sheets a photovoltaic coating
with nanostructured dye-sensitized solar
cells (DSCs).
The objective of the scheme is to
start creating within the next few years
a new UK 1 billion industry which
will provide glass and steel coatings for
buildings sufficient to generate a third
of the countrys total renewable energy
target by 2020.
Renovate Europe reckons that as a
result of the gathering strength of the
energy efficiency drive the total value
of the building renovation market could
at least double in the medium to long
term from 400 billion ($520 billion)
to 800 billion a year. Suppliers of advanced energy efficiency coatings will
be in a good position to benefit substantially from that growth. CW

Business Corner Strategies & Analysis

Strategy or Implementation . . . Which is Harder?

by Phil Phillips, PhD
Contributing Editor
phillips@chemarkconsulting.net

O
Both strategy and
implementation
are important
to a successful
business.
However, too
many times we
see the strategy
being given less

bviously, both are important to do well

to be a successful business. However,
too many times we see the strategy
development phase being given less detailed attention than that of the implementation phase.
Accepted wisdom in many mid-sized
and large companies is that strategy is the
easy part and implementation is the more difficult part. We would agree that both are difficult but would wholeheartedly disagree that
strategy development is easier. On the contrary, if strategic planning is done extremely
well, if anything, that fact makes implementation much easier.
We have all heard that one cannot catch and
pass a moving train unless one is going faster
than the train itself. Well stagnant companies
try to do this when considering the best-inclass competitors.

Its called BENCHMARKING!

Benchmarking takes a still shot of this
competitor and tries to duplicate it. The

best-in-class competitor didnt become the

winner by standing still in a time capsule. The
winner became the winner by constantly retuning its already very good strategy by... pushing and expanding their envelope sphere. They
dont stop and rest on their laurels. Winners
know no rest.
Winners see the changing basis for competition. Winners accurately assess the changing
nature of their customer stagnant players
miss it.
Benchmarks are good tools to use, but just
one of several tools available. Two other tools
must be learned and used effectively to stay

And where in that pyramid do you find
managers who have most of their emotional equity invested in the past? Its at

The next question is crucial to believe
and act on: Whom do we give the primary responsibility for strategy setting

top. Its no wonder we dont gain creativity in this process. Therefore, allocating

strategy setting is one of the huge dilemmas that we have, especially in large and
mid-sized organizations.
Other issues, which cannot be covered
in detail here, are:
1. Under commitment
2. Over commitment
3.
A deep sense of restlessness with
status quo.
Under commitment usually is descriptive of an organization that is reactive
versus pro-active, many times misreading
the opportunitys success subtleties.
Over commitment is when significant resources are placed in play far in
advance of having enough detailed information about a particular opportunity.
An example would be Lilly Industries in
the early 1980s, committing major resources to develop water-based industrial
coatings based on EPAs initial goals for
achieving VOC maximums. Lilly was successful in being first to market with these
new WB coatings, however, EPA moved

thus creating a sales void while allowing
Lillys competitors to catch up technically.
Having a deep sense of restlessness
with status quo is an essential cultural
part of the discipline of successful companys DNA. CW

Going Back to College,

by Steve McDaniel, JD, PhD
Technology Litigators

n the last iPaint, we discussed the

egregious and arguably greatest trade
secret heist in history, the stealing of
Rosalind Franklins x-ray diffraction
data on the DNA double helix structure
where researchers at one university
ripped off a researcher at another university, aided in the heist by a colleague of
the victim. It did not speak well of university ethics and certainly brought into
question university data protection procedures. Still, its hard to protect against
an inside job, one with determined thieves
and a Nobel hanging in the balance.
Man! I wish I could have represented
Dr. Franklin. But, that was long ago (I
would love to say before I was born,
but sadly that would be stretching the
truth a bit).
But, I have indeed represented plaintiff
universities whose trade secrets have allegedly been stolen, and the battles were
ugly. Conversely, I have defended those
being sued by universities for allegedly
stealing the academic trade secrets, and
these skirmishes were messier still. Lots
of money was spent, lots of high-dollar
lawyers and experts were thrown into
the fray, and lots of researchers time was
gobbled up as witnesses rather than doing the lab work at which they were best.
These were typical, down-and-dirty trade
secret litigations, indistinguishable from
those of commercial entities.
So, I am always amazed when I see
from time to time scholarly discussion
on whether or not academic institutions
can own, maintain and profit from trade
secrets. I am equally surprised to hear
paint and coatings companies ponder
on the advisability of doing research and
development at universities for fear of
disclosure of the companys confidential
information through perceived leakysieves of academic laboratories.

Of course, academic institutions are

bastions of freedom of exchange of information. It goes without saying that
they rush to publish state-of-the-art science and engineering information. They
absolutely must seek and obtain public
funding to which public funding agencies they owe a duty to produce
the information to the advantage
of the public at large. And, they
must train and matriculate students, graduate students, medical
professionals, and post-doctoral
fellows armed with the very latest information and techniques.
Just as certain, however, is
that academic institutions have
trade secrets which they protect
as well as or better than most
coatings companies. Frankly,
they are pretty damned good
at it. They have to be. Their
very existence depends upon it.
They thrive on grants, grants
they will not get if the information is public. They attract topnotch faculty by assurances that
the intellectual products issuing
from these faculty will be commercialized and that there will
be dollars to share. They themselves seek to own licensable IP,
chiefly in the form of patents but
not uncommonly in the form of
know-how and show-how. And,
if we are smart about doing so,
we in the coatings industry can
depend upon these academic
drivers to protect our own confidential information.
In this short article, I would
like to discuss how companies can take
advantage of this unending source of economical and excellent research.

Dont Take IP From the

University, Give it To Them
Yep, just give it to them. Your best stuff.
Patented or not. Why? Because its yours

under the law, it will remain yours under

the law if shared under appropriate agreements. And, you can prosecute anyone
who illegally uses it. Even universities.
Lets discuss a hypothetical in which
PaintCo has developed a novel coating to detect corrosion on the substrate

underneath the film. The in-house development used a particular resin system to prove up the concept. PaintCo
filed patent applications judiciously
in a number of commercially-relevant
countries. However, as commercial rollout was under way, PaintCo discovers
problems with the application of the

proof-of-concept formulation on certain
substrates it had not seen in the initial
testing. Commercial launch is imminent,
and the marketing boys want to know
when (including yesterday) they can put
paint on the shelf. The fastest, most efficient, and most likely way to deliver the
requisite results is a large team effort by
highly skilled formulators and applicators at UniversityX, well-known for solving these very sorts of issues.
A no-cost agreement that licenses to
UniversityX the patent, patent applica-

tion, know-how, show-how and trade

secrets surrounding the novel coating
for the limited purpose of perfecting the
formulation on the problematic substrate is inked. The license requires all
improvements to be owned by PaintCo.
This is ancillary to the Universitys own
standard R&D contracts, and PaintCo

elects to pay for all right and title to

inventions arising from exposure to the
University of its IP. And yet, it is a license with all the teeth in it that prohibit disclosure of information. Just
like any other license. UniversityX is
happy. They get dollars in to support
their research organization. There is
no need to haggle with them about
IP ownership. And, PaintCo meets its
roll-out deadlines.

Trust in Your Contracts,

Universities Do
Universities are corporations.
They generate and sign thousands of contracts per year, to
which they are legally bound
and upon which they can be
sued if they breach. They sign
non-disclosure
agreements,
non-competition agreements,
material transfer agreements,
license out and license in
agreements, research and development agreements, joint development agreements, . . . you
name it. Sometimes, they even
do these sorts of agreements
through a for-profit sister corporation that is not shielded by
state immunity from prosecution doctrine. In some instances, you can pay insurance
in the form of an override on
your research and development
contract to assure that all technology developed by the university will accrue to the benefit of
your company and be protected
accordingly. The point here is,
if you go into the collaboration
with your eyes wide open and
make yourself into a good research partner, universities are
capable of and quite willing to
obligate themselves to iron-clad
agreements that will protect your IP.

Develop Close
Relationships with PIs, VPs
of Research
Like any close collaboration, the agreement that governs the relationship is only
as good as the two parties on either side of

June 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

the signature block. All university agreements should contain tight requirements
for routine communications, and backand-forth revisions to research directions.
I have found that very close relationships
between the PI on either side of the collaboration are key. Equally as important
are C-suite relationships between the VPs
of R&D. It helps if they all play golf together (you think I am kidding?).

Hire The Best and The

Brightest
One problem area that is perceived by
coatings companies is the student turnstile. But, think about it. The same in
and out of employees is true of commercial endeavors as well. As we have discussed in iPaint before, non-competition
agreements are tough to enforce even
against your own high-level employees.
So, plan to hire the brightest of the students that have worked on your projects.
They already have training critical to
your operation, they have good-standing
in the trade community, and it solidifies
the relationship between your company
and the Pi, the university, and the R&D
team generally.

Stay Intimately Involved

with the Research
The research product issuing from the
contract is yours. If you do not treat it
in high regard, why should anyone else?
So, stay intimately involved, By this, I
mean make sure you are so closely involved that you pick up the nuances, the
tricks, the mistakes not to be repeated
. . . i.e., the trade secrets, your trade
secrets. Be sure and identify them to
the teams, and then treat them as you
legally must in order to preserve their
status as trade secrets.
The take-home-lesson to all this is
figure out where your program needs
the most help, identify academic researchers that are demonstrably the
best in the area of the problem, and
fearlessly join them with your team.
They are as fit to handle and co-develop
your confidential information as any
corporate entity. So long as you take the
proper approach from the beginning,
you should be just fine. CW

The Industrial
Coatings Market

The market for industrial coatings was impacted by economic uncertainty and unsteady
demand, but there are indications that certain segments such as agriculture and
construction equipment will see growth.
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor

he market for industrial coatings was a mixed bag this

past year. While economic uncertainly continued to impact the market, there were certain bright spots.
The overall industrial coatings market grew by mid-single
digits in 2012, but varied widely by sub-segment, said Roeland
Polet, senior vice president, global industrial for Valspar. The
end of 2012 was not as strong. It was marked by economic
uncertainty and bumpy demand as macro decisions either on
26 | Coatings World

economic stimulus packages or austerity impacted infrastructure and equipment markets that are heavy consumers of industrial coatings. Nevertheless, many segments show strong drivers
for growth in the coming quarters.
With the exception of the wind power generation industry
that still faces a few challenges in U.S., China and Europe,
the other segments performed well overall, said Dimitris
Likouressis, protective business director, group marketing,

The Industrial Coatings Market FEATURE

Hempel. The oil and gas (O&G) segment maintains good
growth especially in connection to the massive gas projects
that take place currently in South East Asia, the unconventional O&G production in USA, the downstream projects in Saudi
Arabia and the offshore activity in the yards of Singapore,
Korea and China. Thermal power generation remains the most
important energy provider around the world whereas infrastructure, civil construction, water and waste water projects
are still on-going in many areas. Mining faced some pressure
due to the prices of metals, however the segment is expected
to recover. Hempels strong global presence and value proposition in the above segments resulted in excellent results during
2012 and a considerable increase of the business and market
share in the protective segment.
The industrial coatings market participates in a wide range
of sub-segments, offering a wealth of growth opportunities.
Valspar focuses on a number of key sub-segments in industrial, including coatings for agriculture and construction equipment (ACE), building products including pre-coated metal, oil
and gas pipelines, shipping containers, freight rail and transportation, and liquid and powder sold through distribution.
Going forward, we believe that the industrial coatings
market has tremendous growth potential, said Polet. One
illustrative example is the infrastructure investment required
to move hydrocarbons from new production regions to

refineries. This will drive growth in the demand for coatings

going forward. Another example is rising living standards.
There are approximately 150 million people that will enter
Chinas middle class in the next five to 10 years, demanding
more technically advanced products. This is like doubling
the entire middle class of the USA. Industrial products that
go into the manufacture of consumer products will increase
globally and we plan to be well positioned in emerging markets to capture that growth.
The ACE market, represents a strong growth opportunity
for Valspar. Demand for agricultural equipment will remain
strong as the demand for food stuffs increases and farmers in
developing countries can earn a return on investing in larger
farms and the equipment needed to work them productively.
The construction market is on the verge of a rebound in many
global markets, while the mining market remains impacted by
weak economics in mining commodities, and weak demand for
additional equipment.
Valspar is also well positioned for the new hydrocarbon
economy. As China and other nations starts to implement
shale gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing, this represents
a big opportunity for Valspar. Today, the spend on infrastructure has slowed a bit, but the fact that China is
trying to move their economy more inland, indicates that
infrastructure will pick up again, said Polet. Valspars

pipeclad coatings have increased penetration in this segment due to superior technology, ease of application, and
best-in-class service.
He added that global energy demand and consumption will
continue to expand and grow which will drive the need for more
oil and gas related structures like pipelines which should provide a positive outlook for the next five to 10 years.
All segments maintain areas that are very interesting to
target thus the importance to stay close to the markets and
to understand the current and underlying needs of our customers, said Likouressis. Even though new built activities
are growing and not only because the yards are looking at
offshore to counter balance the difficult market situation in
marine, maintenance is becoming more and more important
because asset owners want to prolong the life of their assets as
much as possible.
The asset owners are looking for a complete life cycle solution, including the initial construction cost but also the operation and the maintenance costs afterwards, added Likouressi.
At the same time the steel fabricators and the yards are looking
for solutions that will increase their performance and decrease
the total construction. Hempel develops solutions that meet the
above needs and remains at the same time very competitive.
The key to staying competitive in the industrial coatings market, is delivering products with superior performance. Industrial

coatings are used on a wide variety of high end items and need
to offer the highest level of corrosion prevention.
In the most basic terms, customers expect coatings to apply
well, prevent corrosion, and extend the life and beauty of the
products and structures they coat, said Polet.
The typical cost of a coating represents between two and 10
percent of the cost of the products they coat, but they are the
first thing that is seen on the product, and if they fail, the entire
product may need repair or replacement.
Our customers look for us to stretch the useful life of
their equipment because it is critical to what they do. For
instance, in the Off Road segment, corrosion protection is
a top contributor to brand performance. A corrosion-free
harvester or backhoe has a greater resale value at the end of a
lease, said Polet. Additionally, Valspar customers are looking for efficiency in the coating process, which allows them to
optimize total cost through their existing production assets.
These things will remain important in the future, as well as
increased emphasis on environmental impact and improved
UV resistance.
The industrial coatings market continues to move toward
water-based coatings and non-heavy-metal-containing coatings,
but traditional coatings still have a place in the product portfolio. What we are seeing is a diversification in the market according to what regulatory conditions prevail, said Polet.

In Europe, RoHS compliance is driving innovation in coatings systems. In turn, these regulations are working their way
to China as it serves the rest of the world through exports. For
companies like Valspar that invest in advanced technology, these
trends represent a way to capture more market share and stay
ahead of regulatory changes.
Low-VOC and waterborne systems continue to drive innovation. The need to reduce pollution and VOCs in more cities
and provinces has accelerated the growth of waterborne platforms. While limits on raw materials and emissions increase the
challenge of formulating high performance coatings, they also
provide stronger opportunities for companies like Valspar to innovate to solve technical challenges.
Not only the legislation but also quite a few of our customers are very sensitive with regards to the health, safety
and environment (HSE) impact of the coatings solutions that
they use, said Likouressis. Waterborne coatings can offer
well performing solutions, they need however to reach scale
to become competitive. Solventborne versus waterborne is
not however the only dimension in the developments that are
taking place in connection to HSE; as an example, the use of
chemicals such as isocyanates or lead can also be addressed
with equally competitive and performing solutions.

New Products
Valspar targets new product development at increasing performance against regulatory, corrosion and / or applied cost.
For instance, Valspars Aquaguard is the first and only
technology in many categories the shipping container markets first and only low-VOC water-based, zinc-free, two-coat
coating system. In a market where containers circle the globe
many times over an average in-service life of 14 years, the first
containers coated with Aquaguard have more than five years
of proven corrosion prevention, and Aquaguard is qualified
on more coatings lines than any other water-based coating
in the container market, the company reported. Aquaguard

provides an alternative to high-VOC, three coat, solventbased, zinc rich coatings, and has shown to be equal or better
for corrosion prevention.
Another recent Valspar launch is a new line of high operating temperature FBE coatings for the oil and gas market under the Pipeclad Brand. As the exploration for oil and gas has
moved further and further offshore into deeper areas, wellheads closer to the Earths core pump hotter oil into pipes
in colder waters. This puts a higher demand on the pipeline
coating. Valspar has developed new coatings that meet these
new temperature requirements while still delivering high performance protection.
Finally, Valspar has also launched the Valde Edge Coverage
Powder (ECP) which is a revolutionary powder coating that
cures two coats in one pass through an oven, all while delivering best in class edge corrosion protection. This saves customers time and money in application and corrosion prevention, as
most powder coatings must pass through an oven after applying
both the primer and the topcoat, and do a poor job protecting
sharp edges of parts.
Hempel recently launched a DTM (direct to metal) product
based on the latest polyaspartic technology giving very high
productivity especially in line productions such as wind tower
manufacturing, rail cars and other. This is the solution that is
currently used by one of the biggest wind turbine manufacturers
based in Denmark who, together with a specialized steel fabricator, designed and developed a unique tower design revolutionizing the way wind towers are built these days.
Hempel has recently launched its cutting-edge technology to
prevent corrosion under insulation. Having studied the market
requirements and the current challenges namely the high performance but difficult and expensive use of TSA and the insufficiency of the other liquid coatings solutions, Hempel used its
own technology platforms to develop a solution that can provide true protection against corrosion under insulation and at
the same time ease of application, said Likouressis. CW

Metallic Pigments
MARKET
Metallic pigment manufacturers are
optimistic for 2013, which has been slow but
has shown some signs of picking up.

hile expectations for the metallic pigments market

were positive for 2013, especially for the U.S. market, companies Coatings World spoke with reported
it has been somewhat of a slow start.
Frankly speaking, we expected a much better start in North
America, said Joerg Krames, global business line manager coatings and plastics, Eckart GmbH. However, especially for the
U.S. market, we remain positive, for the rest of the year as well
as for 2014.
Krames also said that while South America will experience
a positive stimulation of the economy due to global sports
events, and Germany has recovered a bit and will experience
some upsides for 2014, the outlook for Europe is very poor
due to the weakness in France, Italy and Spain, particularly
in automotive.
Aaron Hollman, global product manager effect pigments,
performance pigments, Sun Chemical, echoed this sentiment
saying that although Sun Chemical has seen positive growth in
the first quarter of 2013, they are facing lower metallic pigment
demand in Europe due to the economic downturn. Likewise they
are seeing stronger demand in the U.S, Latin America and Asia.
Last year, we acquired Benda-Lutz Werke GmbH, a leading
manufacturer of metallic effect pigments, said Hollman. This
acquisition has greatly expanded our metallic effect offerings
designed for coatings, plastics, inks and specialties markets.
With the acquisition, Sun Chemical has added production facilities in Austria, Poland, Russia and the U.S. to accompany its
aluminum manufacturing sites in China.
Sun Chemical remains confident and optimistic that they will
overcome any global economic challenges and continue to see
growth in the market. A particular challenge that they have noticed in the market is the high costs of raw materials.
Sun Chemical anticipates that raw material prices will remain at their current high levels, said Hollman. However, we
are certainly aware of the high degree of volatility in the global
economy. Therefore, we will continue to monitor the key raw

material indexes and focus our manufacturing team on process

and raw material productivity.
Frank J. Maile, director BU Coatings & Colorants, Schlenk,
agreed that raw materials remain a challenge for the market.
Schlenk Metallic Pigments has seen solid growth over the
past two years and we expect growth over this year, although
raw material costs continue to remain a key challenge, Maile
said. We will continue to invest in new metallic pigment technologies and process capabilities to deliver quality, service and
innovation to our customers.
Krames said that cost saving is important to Eckhart as well,
and that raw material costs continue to play an important role in
metallic pigments, especially in terms of copper-based products.
We can see that customers are looking for cheaper solutions, even with a much lower hiding power and other disadvantages, he said.
Maile explained the rising of costs is due to expectations regarding quality, performance and environmental standards.
New paint and application technologies are being developed
with sustainability in mind, said Maile. Metallic pigments have
to be compatible with new coating systems. Globalization will
further intensify competition. Our customers, especially from the
automotive sector, expect us to deliver the same quality all over
the world at a reasonable price. Challenges, including monetary
influences, cost factors and REACH have to be mentioned as well.
In this respect, higher operating rates, energy and raw material
costs will lead to price increases. Controlling the parameters like
flake morphology, particle thickness, particle size distribution and
flawlessness of the particle surface are a real challenge for every
metallic pigment manufacturer. Complexity of metallic pigments
manufacturing will increase in order to meet customer expectations for optical quality, material consistency and cleanliness.

FEATURE Metallic Pigments Market

Maria Giannobile, marketing manager, pigments and colorants, BASF Corporation, explained that the global pigments
market remains tightly aligned with key global economic indicators. This presents a persisting challenge, as the global market including metallic effects is prone to economic contraction.
Giannobile also explained that raw material and conversion
costs for pigments remain a concern for BASF.
BASF continues to search for innovative ways to improve
manufacturing processes, better utilize our assets and global
infrastructure, and minimize the impact of raw material price
increases while continuing to deliver high value products to the
industry, she said.

Major Trends
A major trend in the metallic market for 2013 has certainly been
the development of more environmentally friendly systems and
sustainability.
Our customers are certainly interested in developing metallic finishes using more environmentally-friendly aqueous
systems, said Hollman. Sun Chemical has a wide range of
VOC-free aluminum dispersions and encapsulated aluminum
effects that provide an unlimited array of metallic finishes for
waterborne. We will continue to focus our research and devel-

Eckart Metalure Liquid Black, the first PVD product based on chromium oxide.

opment efforts on expanding our product offerings and technologies geared towards sustainability.
BASF also explained they have felt the effects of environmental regulations.
As environmental regulations go into effect, this will exude greater influence and importance as a key driver towards
a common definition of what sustainability will play within the
industry and the choices customers will make in the marketplace. Further, we see that the growing use of effect pigments
into coatings formulation that can deliver more impactful visual
aesthetics, said Giannobile
Along with trends of environmentally friendly and sustainable finishes, the demand for industrial and automotive coatings
is increasing.

BASF noted that traditional markets such as automotive and

the industrial segment will continue to be primary consumers of
special effect pigments.
Used in a wide range of end market applications from automobiles, house exteriors to electronics and many more, special
effect pigments address the demands for brand and product differentiation as the range of aesthetic color values continues to
expand, said Giannobile.
According to Sun Chemical, industrial and automotive
coating applications show the strongest demand for metallic
pigments. Emerging areas are architectural paint, building materials, electronic materials and securities.
Eckart also noticed that the overall automotive sector with
exterior, interior, parts, and wheel rims and refinish business is
still the most dominant field for metallic effect pigments.
Due to the current color trend towards black and white
regarding smart phones and tablets we can see a strong decrease
in the 3C business for metallic effect pigments, said Krames.
Emerging areas will be functional coatings solutions for the
consumer like energy saving of protective coatings and functionalized solutions for our customers.

New Technologies and Products

BASF explained that for the future, the company would continue to focus on high performance and effect pigment solutions.
We will continue to focus on sustainable coating solutions
that provide environmental functional benefits based on sound
chemical technologies as well as high performance and aesthetic
value that customers expect from BASF, said Giannobile.
BASFs newest products launched are Firemist Crystal Touch,
a tactile effect pigment with bright sparkle appearance; Glacier
Crystal White and Glacier Silk White, white pearlescent effect
pigments based on synthetic mica flakes coated with titanium dioxide; and Lumina Royal Aqua, Lumina Royal Indigo, Lumina
Royal Copper, highly chromaticity effect pigments.
Eckart has produced many functional products as well as a
variety of products with improved optical effects.
Our Hydro Series for water-based coatings solutions will
quite soon be expanded by the new family member hydromic,
besides our flagship product hydrolan, said Krames. With this
most recent hydromic innovation, we will present an interesting
alternative, which offers lower total costs, making it especially
attractive for those customers who are currently using self-passivation systems.
Eckart also developed a new metallic pigment, PCS 900 that
fulfills the powder parkets demand for extremely fine pigments.
The latest addition to the Sun Chemical product portfolio
consists of premium aluminum, bronze and zinc pigments in
multiple product forms (powders, pastes, pellets or customized
dispersions) is Benda-Lutz Metallic Effects
Schlenk offers an array of new products including AluMotion,
SilverCoil, Decomet MirrorCoil, Powdat the next generation,
Decomet 5000, Decomet 2057/10, Metaprint LithoGloss UV,

Eastern Coatings
Show Review

Inaugural event exceeds expectations.

Bridget Klebaur, Associate Editor

he Eastern Coatings Show was held April 29th-May 2nd

in Atlantic City, NJ at the Trump Taj Mahal. According
to show organizers, the ECS was successful and exceeded all expectations. The show was hosted by the Metropolitan
New York Coatings Association, the Philadelphia Society for
Coatings Technology and the New England Society for Coatings
Technology and received tremendous praise.
According to Dave White, lab manager, Heucotech Ltd., who
is part of the planning committee, the show turned out better
than anyone imagined it would, with the lectures being especially successful.
Theres been a great interaction with the question and
answer sessions, so the participation has been really good,
White said.
Rick Mazzariello, Enrichem Specialties, who is also the
chairman of the planning committee, said that the incredible
response to the show was surprising to everyone.

Being that this was the first show ever that we put together, we were certainly surprised at the great response we had
to the show, not only the response in terms of the amount of
people, but also the enthusiasm of the people once they were
here in terms of the quality of the technical talks, the activity
in the trade show hall, and all the amenities we put together,
Mazzariello explained.
Mazzariello also added that the collaboration to put the
event together made all of it possible.
The ECS was truly a collaborative effort of the MNYCA,
the NESCT and the PSCT. Enthusiasm for this event was very
high and hence, attendance levels were much greater than expected. We have received positive feedback from many attendees, speakers and exhibitors and we are planning our next show
in 2015 to be even bigger and better, he said.
A spokesperson for Fody Associates, the group responsible
for staffing and planning the event, said that the number of

people for advanced registration and walk up registration is almost double what was anticipated for the event, with the total
number surpassing 600.
More than 42 presenters featured talks at the ECS include
topics such as Anti-Corrosives and Protective Coatings, Binders,
Functional Fillers, Additives, Colorants, Surfactants, Functional
Additives, Optimized Hiding, Tio2 Replacement, Waterborne
Coatings, Nano Materials, Marketing, Rheology, Novel
Materials and Formulation.
Terri Shefelbine of 3M, presented her lecture on Performance
Study of Ceramic Microspheres in a Water-based Acrylic Flat
Architectural Paint.
These materials have a very unique set of properties for the
paint and coatings department. They are made of alkaline aluminum silicate ceramic, and they are spherically shaped. Some
of the properties are important to the architectural market,
some arent, Shefelbine explained.
Shefelbine also sought to reinforce that 3M, from a laboratory perspective and business perspective, is committed to the
paint market.
We want to speak paint, and we want our customers to
understand what we do, and we also want to understand what
our customers problems are, Shefelbine said.
Maria Nargiello, Evonik, featured her lecture on NanoStructured Particles to Enhance Primer Performance Properties.
Nargeillo explained her presentation focused on water-based
primers, and that there was a focus of time and effort in solventbased systems, with a lot of data already published on solvent
based systems.
When we look at primers today, were going to talk about
particle modification review. One thing about all of these types

of particle-based products is theyre highly adaptable, and were

going to talk about why and how we modify them and some of
the flavors they come in, Nargiello said.
We did some details on the formulations and then we look
at functionality in the testing. When it comes to rheology, basic
pigment suspension as well as settling, certainly anti corrosion
and water repellency are functionalities that we will look and
then mechanical reinforcement, she added.
Dave White of Heucotech gave a lecture on Zero VOC
Colorants A to Z High Hiding, High Performance, High
Strength, IR Reflective.
White explained that in terms of the future, there are a lot of
high performance pigments on the market, and the consumer is
always looking for more.
So, where are colorants headed? The consumer is demanding more and more from the colorants companies and paint
companies, there are a lot of high performance pigments out
there; we concentrated on the reds and yellows in particular,
he said.
White also explained that there were certain benefits to these
high performance colors.
Generally what youre looking at on your high performances, if youre doing a new color system, or if you have an
extra four canisters, you throw the four canisters of the high
performance in, and then you can get a nice blend,White said.
You dont need to use the red 254; the interior paints arent as
sufficient, but if youre going outdoors you want that security
you want to be able to go home and sleep at night when youre
selling that paint to the contractor who is painting a 40 story
building, knowing he wont have to paint it again for five or
ten years.

A Highlight of the JNS-Smithchem Booth at Eastern Coatings Show 2013

Michael Smith, JNS-Smithchem, recently found this photo of the 34th National Paint, Oil & Varnish convention meeting in Atlantic
City in 1921 while searching through old photos. JNS-Smithchem featured the photo at their exhibit booth at the Eastern Coatings
Show held April 29th-May 2nd in Atlantic City, NJ.
I was going through my mothers basement somewhat remembering that we might still have some old photos from Smith
Chemical & Color Co. Inc. in storage, Smith said. To my surprise I found this one, which coincidentally took place in Atlantic City
92 years ago. My grandfather Casper Smith founded Smith Chemical & Color Co. Inc. back in 1917 in New York City. He is sitting
front row (third NY player to the left of the three non-players) in his baseball uniform for the NY Society, which was playing against
the Philadelphia Society. The photo is now hanging in the JNS-Smithchem offices in Paterson, NJ where it will be a great reminder
of the pioneers that helped to build the paint and coatings industry.

FEATURE Eastern Coatings Show Review

Brij Mohal, Chromaflo Technologies Corp., presented on
New Developments in Color Space for Architectural and
Industrial Coatings.
Mohal discussed color space analysis, faade applications,
architectural applications, industrial applications, and colorant
module customization.
While discussing architectural applications, Mohal explained
that the high performance and high strength colorants allow
more vivid reproduction of existing colors in nature.
Jessica Almos, Halox, gave her lecture on High Performance
Organic and Inorganic Zinc-Free Corrosion Inhibitors. Almos
explained that along with the increase of awareness of the heavy
metal impact on humans and the environment has come more
stringent regulations prohibiting the use of heavy metals.
As all of us know some of the heavy metals like chromium
and lead, which are very good corrosion inhibitors, are very
high risk to us, especially in the respiratory track, and also high
risk to the environment, she said.
Almos also explained corrosion is an electrochemical process
that cant be stopped, but can be slowed down with the use of
corrosion inhibitors.
Organics have a lot of properties that work very well in thin
films, and have a lot of properties that will help with adhesion.
Some of the inorganic pigments, we use a lot in our formulations, theyre going to give long term corrosion depending on
the water solubility of the pigment youre using, she added.
In addition to the papers and lectures featured at the Eastern
Coatings Show, there was a gala dinner held on Wednesday
May 1st that drew more than 150 visitors and featured keynote speaker, Peter Molinaro, vice president, North America
Government Affairs, Dow Chemical Company. Molinaro presented the keynote speech on the topic of current challenges and
opportunities in the Coatings industry.
The ECS committee consisted of: Sheila Belding (Troy

Latin America International Coatings Scene

Latin American Paint and

Coatings Market Rebounds
by Charles W. Thurston
Latin America Correspondent
thurstoncw@rodmanmedia.com

he estimated $9.2 billion Latin American market for paint

and coatings is in rebound mode, expanding again this year
a few percentage points faster than overall economic growth.
While growth rates differ among the four largest country markets -Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Colombia -- the outlook is strong for
each of them. Indeed, the growth of Latin Americas paint and coatings industry has been projected at six percent per year through 2016
by Englewood, Colorado-based IHS, an industry research analyst.
These four countries account for more than two-thirds of
regional sales of all segments, according to a late May financial community presentation by Tim Knight, the president of
Sherwin-Williams Latin America coatings group, in Cleveland.
By country, Brazil accounts for 30 percent of all regional sales,
Mexico accounts for 20 percent, Colombia accounts for 11 percent, and Argentina accounts for six percent, he indicated.
From a global perspective, Latin America ex-Mexico accounted for eight percent of worldwide paint and coatings
demand in 2012, according to the World Paint & Coatings
Industry Association, or WPCIA, in Washington, D.C. Add
Mexico to the mix and Latin America is well on the way to
consuming 10 percent of global demand.
Not too long ago, Latin America was seen by U.S. paint and
coatings companies as an ancillary source of income following
domestic sales. Today, the region is of crucial importance as
a source of the major players global income. AkzoNobel, for
example, reports that 11 percent of all revenues in 2012 came
from Latin America, which now is of nearly equal importance
to North America for the companys operations. Similarly,
Latin America is estimated to represent nine percent of SherwinWilliams $9.5 billion global sales, 13 percent of RPMs global
coatings sales of $4 billion, and 14 percent of DuPonts global
paint and coatings sales of $5.3 billion.

Investments Follow Strong Demand

Global paint and coatings companies continue to make direct
investments in Latin America, including acquisitions and new
projects. Apart from seeking to serve the expanding market,
global companies also are seeking to increase their local content
production to meet requirements for domestic added value.
Architectural, automotive and industrial segments of the industry are all poised for growth. But the automotive segment,
global in its planning, may be attracting the largest investments
among end users of paints and coatings in the industry. Mexico is
now the worlds fourth largest exporter of automobiles, shipping

2.1 million units last year. And Anfavea, Brazils auto industry
trade association projects that production will increase from 3.3
million units in 2012 to 5.7 million by 2016.
One of the largest recent investments in the region is BASFs
$660 million Acrylic Complex at Camacari, in Bahia State, which
is slated for operation by late 2014. The Camacari production
will supplant some $200 million in Brazilian chemical imports,
and add $100 million in exports, the company calculates. It could
also lower the production cost of BASFs leading Suvinil architectural paint line. This is the first acrylic complex in Latin America
with leading edge technology, and it reconfirms our confidence in
Brazil, said BASF board member Stefan Marcinowiski, in a May
interview with Tribuna da Bahia. BASF reported $8.4 billion in
group sales in Latin America during 2012.
Among other recent investments in the region, Evonik
Industries, based in Essen, Germany, is planning a new precipitated silica plant in Brazil that will come on line next year to
supply the paint and coatings industry among others, with an
investment level in the middle double-digit million-euro range.

Emphasis on Building a Local Presence

Many paint and coatings manufacturers follow their clients into
Latin America as an initial beach-head into the market, then
form joint ventures with local partners, only to later buy them
out. Valspar, for example, began serving John Deere in Latin
America since 2007, and over the past decade has acquired 100
percent of joint ventures it had formed Brazil and Mexico.
Then two years ago, Valspar moved into acquisitions,
purchasing Brazils Isocoat Tintas e Vernizes Ltda., based in
Araariguama, in So Paulo State, to further strengthen its
Latin American sales of powder, liquid and electro-deposition
coatings. We are not yet in the architectural market in Brazil,
qualified Carlos Campos, the marketing director for the

company, in So Bernardo do Campo,
Sao Paulo State.
Marketing in Latin America also is
increasing as brands struggle to rise with
evolving consumer tastes. Not only are
consumers seeking higher quality paints,
but they are also helping to drive more
global trends. Peacock teals paired with
pinks and corals are making a statement
and are influenced by Latin America, stated Marshalltown, Iowa-based Diamond
Vogels ColorWatch Internet blog.

Regional Economic
Expansion
The
United
Nations
Economic
Commission for Latin America and the
Caribbean, based in Santiago, Chile,
projects regional growth this year at 3.5
percent this year -- up from 3.0 percent
in 2012 -- led in part by recovery in
Argentina and Brazil. Among the fastest growing countries in the region are:
Paraguay (which) will lead growth in
2013, with an expected rise in gross domestic product of 10.0 percent, followed
by Panama at 8.0 percent, Peru at 6.0
percent and Haiti at 6.0 percent.
Indeed, this growth will continue: The
International Monetary Fund predicts
that the region will average growth of 4.0
percent through 2015, compared with
2.7 percent in the United States and 2.1
percent in the European Union.

Such relatively strong regional growth

has led to an expansion of the middle
class with a corresponding expansion in
consumer consumption. Over the past decade over 50 million people have migrated into the regions middle class, which
has had a long fight against poverty.
Among optimistic crystal ball gazers,
one suggests that by 2020, Latin America
will have a combined GDP of $10.7 trillion, equivalent to 9 percent of the global
GDP, and double that of 2010, reckoned
Guillaume Corpart, the managing director
of Americas Market Intelligence, based in
Coral Gables, Florida. His future scenario
also suggests that private consumption
per head will reach $11,143, compared to
$6,360 in 2012. Finally, Corpart predicts
that, by 2020, Latin America will represent
10 percent of the global population and a
total market of 640 million consumers.
This growth of the middle class in
Latin America should help boost per
capita paint consumption, which is up
to about seven liters in Brazil, compared
with double that in the United States.
Among limits to growth in the region
is inflation, which is expected to drop
this year to six percent from 5.6 percent
in 2012, down from 6.8 percent in 2011.
However, some countries, like Venezuela,
still are working to bring down very high
inflation rates; inflation last year was 19.5
percent, down from 29 percent in 2011.

40 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

Consumption Opportunities
Thus far, Latin America only consumes
about seven kilograms of paint and coatings on a per capita basis, so there is substantial room to grow before consumption
hits U.S. levels of roughly twice the volume.
S-Ws Knight suggests that in the region, architectural paint represents 61
percent of total sales of $9.2 billion, followed by product finishes with 15 percent,
protective and marine coatings 14 percent,
and automotive 10 percent of total sales.
The build out of company-owned retail
stores and dedicated dealers is key to expansion in the architectural segment. SherwinWilliams plans to expand its universe of 801
company stores and dedicated dealers to
1040 by 2016, according to Knight.
Increased purchasing power is strongly
affected by access to credit. While Mexican
consumers are still recovering from a U.S.inspired economic slowdown, credit is
expanding rapidly. Consumer credit continues to expand at a robust pace, by 20
percent (in nominal terms) in 2012 and
early 2013, observed Standard & Poors
analyst Lisa M. Schineller, in New York, in
an April report on Mexico. And in Brazil,
new credit growth to households is growing by about 13 percent, according to S&P.

Brazil Leads the Latin

Market
Brazils massive $2.5 trillion economy is
expected to grow by 3.0 percent this year,
compared to less than one percent in 2012.
Other new investments in Brazils paint
and coatings market include a new technical
center for Munich-based Wacker Chemie
AG, in Sao Paulo. The center will serve
South America in applications of the companys silicone and polymer products used
in the architectural segment of the paint
industry. Similarly, Metalgrafica Trivisan
S.A. is investing an estimated $25 million,
including $9 million worth of German
technology, to double its annual metal can
production capacity to 900 tons per year at
So Jos dos Pinhais, Parana state.
The growth of the oil and gas in
Brazil, public and private investments in
the energy and power industry with new
technologies such as the renewable energy
generated by wind mills also represent an
opportunity for our marine and protective

coatings business based in Rio de Janeiro,
said Jaap de Jong, the regional director of
Latin America and the Brazil country director, based in Sao Paulo for AkzoNobel.
In Brazil in particular we are seeing that
the building and infrastructure segment will
be one of the drivers for growth considering all projects that are under planning or
execution such as the stadiums and buildings for the World Cup and the Olympics.
We expect to grow around five to 10 percent
during the next years, added de Jong.
Acquisitions in Brazil are expected to
rise, according to Abrafati, the national paint
manufacturers association, in Sao Paulo.
One year ago, RPM International, based in
Medina, Ohio, purchased diversified paint
and coatings maker Viapol Ltda. based in
Cacapava, Sao Paulo State. At the time of
the acquisition, RPM CEO Frank Sullivan,
said, The acquisition of Viapol establishes a
substantial footprint for RPM and our many
industrial and consumer businesses in the
exciting Brazilian market, which is the largest economy in South America, and now the
sixth largest economy in the world. Viapol
reported $85 million in annual revenues
prior to the purchase.
Among other recent acquisitions, powder coatings specialist WEG Tintas Brazil,
based in Jaragu do Sul, in Santa Catarina
State, last year purchased Stardur Tintas
Especiales, an automotive coatings manufacturer based in Indaiatuba, State of So
Paulo. Stardur revenues amounted to
about $38 million in 2011.
Marketing in Brazil is competitive and
intense. Beyond media commercials, several major paint companies have adopted
colonial towns or urban slums in Rio de
Janeiro and elsewhere to show their colors. Sports advertising also is broad, but
has recently picked up pace as the clock
counts down to Brazils hosting of the
World Cup in Soccer in 2014. In anticipation of the event paint companies are
vying for stadium refurbishment deals,
like AkzoNobel, which will repaint part
of the Maracana stadium, in Rio.
Today, for example, of total revenue
in the decorative paints business in Brazil,
between 30 percent and 40 percent are
from the high-tech products, said Jaap
Kuiper, the president of AkzoNobels
decorative paints business unit in Latin

America, based in Sao Paulo.

Environmental sensitivity is strong in
Brazil, and paint and coatings manufacturers are focusing on zero VOC products
for that market. Renner Sayerlack, based
in Cajamar, Sao Paulo State, for example,
recently launched its Linha Verde, or Green
Line, brand, which features a logo adorned
with a large green leaf labeled ecological.
Among other green affiliations, Universo
Tintas, based in Diadema, Sao Paulo State,
recently joined Brazils Green Building
Council, which promotes sustainable
practices in construction. Universo Tintas
recently launched a high concentration
acrylic paint line for residential consumers.

Mexico Linked to U.S.

Volatility
Mexicos $1.2 trillion economy was the
most affected in Latin America by the
U.S. recession. Nonetheless, Mexicos
economy also will match the regional
growth projection this year, at 3.5 percent, slowing from 3.9 percent last year.
Manufacturing in Mexico is reported to
be rising faster than the national GDP,
notes Schineller. However, construction
slowed during the first few months of the
year, with February statistics showing a
2.9 percent drop in activity, according to
the national statistics agency INEGI.
The largest recent acquisition in Mexico
-- and the most important in the region of
late -- was Sherwin-Williams $2.3 billion
purchase of Comex, Mexicos largest paint
company. The deal added about $1.2 billion in annual sales by Comex, along with
its 3,300 points of sale in the country. The
deal made S-W the leading paint company
in North America.
Among other recent acquisitions,
Mexichem, based in Mexico City, purchased
PolyOnes specialty vinyl dispersion, blending and suspension resin facilities in Avon
Lake. Ohio, for $250 million. Permission
for the deal from the U.S. Federal Trade
Commission was secured in May.
Another larger joint venture was announced by Mexichem in January, a $550
million investment project with national oil
company Pemex, to produce 24,000 metric
tons of vinyl chloride in its first year of operation. Vinyl chloride is used as a binder in
specialty paints, among other uses.

June 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

Argentine Economic
Recovery Promising
Argentinas estimated $450 billion economy is expected to grow at 3.5 percent
this year, compared with 1.9 percent in
2012. However inflation of at least 10
percent limits real expansion of paint
and coating consumption.
Mergers and acquisitions continue in
Argentina, where WEG Tintas purchased
powder coatings maker Pulverlux S.A.
two years ago, adding some $7 million in
revenue to its bottom line from sales to the
automotive and white goods segments.
Among recent marketing campaigns
in Argentina, Sinteplast in May donated
paint for the refurbishment of the Ronald
McDonald House in Buenos Aires.
Sinteplast also was a founding member
of the Caminhando Juntos or Walking
Together foundation, an undertaking of the
United Way.

Colombia Grows on Andean

Trade
Colombias $330 billion economy is pegged
to grow at 4.5 percent this year, ahead of
the region, up slightly from 4.0 percent
last year, according to ECLAC forecasts.
Colombia plays a key role in the Andes subregion of Latin America. PPG, for example,
established a new Andean base in Medellin
for its industrial coatings business two
years ago, to serve the area, with emphasis
on Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.
Among new investments in the industry, Grupo Mundial announced plans
to invest $25 million in re-tooling its
Colombian coatings factories. Mundials
Compania Global de Pinturas, or Pintuco,
paint unit bought H.B. Fullers paint business in Central America for $120 million.
As a conglomerate, Mundial reported
a double-digit increase in profits last year
on sales of $1 billion. Its Pintuco unit
reported a nine percent volume increase
last year, coupled with an eight percent
export expansion.
Acquisitions in Colombia include
PPGs 2012 purchase of the coatings
businesses of Colpisa Colombiana de
Pinturas, based in Itag, Colombia, and
its affiliates, including Colpisa Ecuador.
Colpisa has been a PPG automotive coatings licensee since 1996. CW

many different end-user products. The
portfolio includes ingredients for personal
care, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, plastic
additives, pigments and paper chemicals
as well as chemicals used in oil and gas
production and mining. In some market
segments, increasing standardization and
the entry of new competitors have changed
the business environment significantly.
This especially applies to the markets for
plastic additives and pigments as well as
for water, leather and textile chemicals.
BASF aims to adapt its businesses to
the changed market environment and significantly increase competitiveness in the
coming years by streamlining processes,
investing in new technologies and adjusting its portfolio and its organizational
setup. The currently planned measures will
lead to a reduction of approximately 500
positions worldwide by the end of 2015.
The expansion of our specialty business in the Performance Products segment
made us more robust to economic fluctuations, said Michael Heinz, member of
the Board of Executive Directors of BASF
SE and responsible for the Performance
Products segment. However, the growth
and profitability of the standard products
do not yet meet our requirements. We have
therefore identified numerous measures,
which we are implementing step by step.
Further measures are being analyzed.
BASF aims to improve the efficiency
and profitability of the plastic additives
and pigments and resins business units
in Europe, which are mainly located in
the Basel area. In the pigments and resins business unit, European product and
quality management and product safety
will be pooled in Ludwigshafen. Global
product management lead will be bundled in Hong Kong. In this way, synergies
can be generated by bundling expertise

and competencies.
In the Plastic Additives business, a
more market-oriented approach will be
introduced. The product-related development and application technology will
sharpen its focus on key topics and customer industries and will be organized
more efficiently through a network of
global competence centers in different
locations worldwide. In addition, supporting functions, such as technology and
strategy management as well as controlling, will be consolidated in Ludwigshafen
The restructuring will lead to a reduction of a total of up to 350 positions in
the Basel area by the end of 2015. This
includes the pooling of tasks at other
sites. BASF aims to implement the job
reductions related to the restructuring
measures in the Basel area in a socially
responsible manner. BASF will attempt
to find job opportunities in other BASF
Group companies for as many employees
as possible.

variety of wafer boards, finger joint siding and composite trims. In addition,
younger trees are now being used to
make home sidings. Gnatowski said the
proposed standard will aid in the development of paint for these new lines of
architectural products.

BASF Receives European

Water Stewardship
Certificate
BASF is the first chemical company to
achieve gold-level certification according to the European Water Stewardship
(EWS) standard for its production site in
Tarragona, Spain. In order to attain this
certificate, auditors of third party certification body TV Nord Integra assessed the
entire water management performance of
BASFs production site, from extraction of
water at its source to its reintroduction in
downstream water bodies. The European
standard was developed by governments,
businesses and NGOs under the leadership
of the independent organization European
Water Partnership (EWP) and became effective at the end of 2011.
BASF uses water as a coolant, solvent
and cleaning agent, as well as directly in
chemical production. The company has
implemented the standard in order to
promote its global water goals. By 2020,
BASF wants to reduce the withdrawal of
drinking water from supply sources for
production by half compared with 2010.
The emissions to water of organic substances and nitrogen are to be reduced by
80 percent, the emissions of heavy metals
by 60 percent, compared with 2002.

The Lubrizol Corporation has launched

the Solsperse M Series, a family of hyperdispersants for multimedia colorants.
The Solsperse M Series is designed to
deliver broad compatibility to colorants
for solventborne industrial coatings. The
Solsperse M Series enables formulators to
quickly select the ideal hyperdispersant
for their unique industrial colorant requirements optimizing compatibility, efficiency, regulatory compliance and overall
quality, according to the company. The
Solsperse M Series requires less grinding resin in the millbase, thereby reducing viscosity and enabling even higher
pigment loading in the colorant, which,
in turn, allows better mill utilization for
faster dispersion and increased production volumes. Some Solsperse M Series
options completely eliminate the need for
grinding resins, resulting in even further
reduction of millbase viscosity, the company reported.
Solsperse M Series hyperdispersants
are designed for formulation of universal colorants with the broadest range of
compatibility allowing rationalization of
tinter inventories. A reduction in additive
inventories is also possible. By reducing
inventories and streamlining dispersion
processing, the Solsperse M Series enables
significant cost savings in labor and materials. Solsperse M Series hyperdispersants
are available for dispersion of organic
and inorganic pigments in resin-free and
resin-containing solvent borne colorants,
suitable for tinting a wide variety of industrial coatings.

Sliding Friction Testing

From Brookfield
Engineering
Brookfield Engineering has introduced
the TA-SFJ Sliding Friction Jig which
measures the coefficient of friction (COF)
between two materials by sliding them
against each other. One material is affixed
to the base plate of the test fixture while
the other material is wrapped around a
weight which is then pulled across the
first material at constant speed. The test
apparatus utilizes the Brookfield CT3
Tester to pull the weight in a horizontal
direction so that the sliding friction between the two materials is measured accurately over a distance that is sufficient
to verify steady state behavior.
The TA-SFJ Sliding Friction Jig is used
to measure tactile qualities like smoothness, slipperiness or stickiness. It is ideal
for a wide variety of applications including lubricants and grease, personal care
products and many types of surfaces and
coatings. The Brookfield CT3 Tester is the
best value in a stand-alone instrument for
physical testing, according to the company. It combines simplicity of operation
with expanded test method capability and
operates in both compression and tension
modes. TexturePro CT software enables
the operator to automate their test procedures and generate valuable analytical
data. CW

PPG-painted Checkered Past

takes 50th Annual Ridler Award

Checkered Past, a 1940 Ford coupe featuring a dazzling red

PPG Industries paint finish by Charley Hutton, has won the
2013 Ridler Award, one of the custom car worlds most coveted
honors. The announcement was made during the 61st annual
Detroit Autorama at Cobo Hall. The Ridler Award is presented
to the most outstanding custom car or truck making its debut
appearance at the Detroit Autorama, held annually in March.
Checkered Past is owned by Ron and Deb Cizek of Bennington,
Nebraska, and was the first car created by Andy Leach and his
crew at the newly-opened Cal Automotive Creations in Omaha.
Hutton, regarded as one of the most accomplished and talented
painters in the custom car world, did the paint work at his shop,
Charley Huttons Color Studio, in Nampa, Idaho, where he exclusively uses PPG Automotive Refinish products.
The cars custom color, dubbed Checkered Red, was personally created and mixed by Hutton, as was the gold named

Madysen Gold used for body accents and the Tonic Brown
used on the chassis. To achieve the exact colors and look he
wanted, Hutton used waterborne Envirobase High Performance
products by PPG. He also used D8152 Performance+ Glamour
Clearcoat for the body and D8113 Matte Clearcoat for the
wheels to give the Ford its lustrous finish.
The unique thing about using EHP is that the colors are
so clean and crisp, Hutton said. What would normally
be a three-stage process with solvent coatings only took two
stages with Envirobase High Performance. The look of PPGs
Envirobase High Performance waterborne color makes it seem
as if the color is just oozing off the car with a wet and rich look
like no other. It is amazing what this technology can do, and
with a difficult red color, no less.
Total construction took two years, with Huttons body and
paint work taking four months. CW
