Battery Status Display and Automatic Shutdown
The Battery Management Component (BMC) communicates with the smart batteries in
the FR3-CORE. The BMC determines the remaining overall capacity and actively
measures the system power consumption to calculate the remaining operation time.
You can view this information on the FR Master. Each battery has a 5 segment LCD
display where each segment represents 20% of the full charge capacity.
The Battery Status Display is active even if you use an external power supply. If the
batteries are not fully charged, then they will be charged according to the capability of
attached charger. the segment blink according the charge status.
The batteries in the FR3-CORE are hot swappable, see "Battery Hot Swap"
on page 20; otherwise, you can connect the unit to an external power source to
recover from a low battery status. If you cannot perform either of these actions, you
need to stop all active measurements on the FR Master.
When the expected remaining operation time drops to 5 minutes, the BMC triggers an
automatic shutdown. If the FR3-CORE components do not shutdown correctly within 4
minutes, the BMC triggers a hard power off.
You cannot stop the automatic shutdown process after the low battery alarm is triggered. After such a shutdown, you need to turn the I/O switch OFF and insert charged
batteries or attach an external power supply before you can restart the system.
Battery Hot Swap
The FR3-CORE has an integrated battery hot-swap functionality. During operation you
can quickly disconnect and connect valid power sources, for example, smart batteries

or the office power supply without the need for a system shutdown and start cycle. This
hot-swap capability allows you to operate Freerider III continuously.
The BMC must contain at least one smart battery to fulfill the minimum charge condition.
Battery Minimum Charge State to Allow System Power On
To prevent system shutdown immediately after startup, you cannot start the system if
the remaining battery capacity is below a certain threshold, that is, <1000mAh =>
approx. runtime < 20min.
Freerider III ignores the minimum charge state if the system is connected to the mains.

To hot swap a battery

1. Unzip the backpack.
2. Press the latch to open the top cover.
3. Loosen the screw to the right of the battery locking bar and swing open the bar.
4. Check on the FR Master or LCD battery display to see which battery has the lowest
charging state.
5. Pull the battery out by the foil handle.
6. Align the ridge on the top of the battery with the notch at the top of the empty bay
and insert the charged battery into the bay.
7. Guide the battery foil handles through the corresponding openings in the locking
bar.

2.3.4 Freerider III Battery Pack 89 WH (FR3-BA89WH)

The main power source for the Freerider 3 portable use case is the FR3-BA89WH LiIon cell based smart battery.

Fig. 2-17: FR3-BA89WH

For the office or vehicle use case, you need to have at least one FR3-BA89WH in your
system.
The FR3-BA89WH has the following features:

2.3.4.1

Nominal output voltage of 14.4 Vdc

Rated energy 89 Wh

Fuel-Gauge electronics to determine State-Of-Charge

Communication interface

Internal 2-stage software and hardware protective circuits against over-heating,

over-voltage, and short-circuits conditions

Foil handle to pull the battery pack out of the BMC battery bay

UN safety test approved

Safety Information
For important safety informaton about the FR3-BA89WH battery pack, see chapter 2.2,
"Safety Instructions", on page 11.

2.3.4.2

Usage
Charge the FR3-BA89WH battery completely before each use. You can charge the
batteries in the external FR3-OMBC, which can charge 4 batteries in parallel or you
can leave the batteries in the BMC while the system is connected to an external power
supply. The system does not need to be on.
The in-system-charging-time and the final charge state depend on the type of external
power supply, the system status, that is, idle or measuring, and the number of batteries. Furthermore, depending on the power supply you can charge the batteries in parallel while the system is running. In case of FR3-VPS this however may stretch the
charge time!

Manual Freerider III 03

(FR3-VPS)", on page 37, and chapter 2.3.6.3, "FR3-OMBC", on page 39.
If the ambient temperature is > 35C, you can place the FR3-CORE in a special charging mode where the cooling fan operation is determined by the ambient temperature.
To place the FR3-CORE in a special charging mode
1. Connect an FR3-OPS and FR3-VPS to a running FR3-CORE.
2. Turn off the system with the I/O button.
3. Ensure that the LED on the I/O button blinks at least once, and then press the I/O
button again.
Note: You can only use the system after the special charging mode has completed. You can then turn the system on with the I/O button.
Recalibration
The batteries can track and estimate the maximum error of the battery charge state.
When the error exceeds the battery internal specification, the battery raises the recalibration flag, which causes the BMC in the FR3-Core to run a recalibration cycle.
During this cycle the BMC forces the system to draw power only from the battery with
the flag to drain the battery. After the battery has completely discharged, the BMC
switches over to the remaining batteries to power the system. That is, you might not
even be aware that the recalibration cycle is running except if you notice that the batteries are charging asynchronously.
If you recharge the battery completely with a normal charge cycle the recalibration
cycle automatically ends. However, if you recharge the battery before it has completely
discharged, the recalibration cycled automatically restarts the next time that you turn
on the system.

2.3.6 Freerider III Optional Hardware

This section describes the optional components that you can use with Freerider III.
2.3.6.1

Office Power Supply (FR3-OPS)

The FR3-OPS requires 3.5 hours for a full charge cycle. You can charge the batteries
while the Freerider III system is in operation without affecting the charge time.
Remove the FR3-CORE from the FR3-BP before you connect the FR3-OPS or FR3VPS.

Fig. 2-22: FR3-OPS Office Power Supply

Usage
Even though the FR3-VPS can deliver enough power to operate the system, FR3CORE requires a minimum of one charged battery in the BMC to operate. This battery
acts as Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) during motor cranking.
Due to the power limitations of the cigarette lighter socket, the charging current and
voltage toward the FR3-BA89WH batteries are limited. The achievable recharge time
for 4 x FR3-BA89WHs therefore depends on the overall system load. Assuming a typical system load, you can expect the 4 batteries to be charged to a maximum of 80% to
85% capacity within 6 hours. Due to limited output voltage of 16.0V, the FR3-VPS cannot fully charge the batteries to 100%.
To recharge a FR3-BA89WH to 100%, use the optional Office Multiple Bay
Charger (FR3-OMBC) or the Office Power Supply (FR3-OPS).
The FR3-VPS does not support brown out protection for the vehicle battery. Instead,
you need to turn the engine on when the FR3-VPS is on and detach the FR3-VPS from
the cigarette lighter socket if vehicle is off for a longer period.
Installation
To install the FR3-VPS
1. Ensure that the BMC contains at least one charged battery.
2. Connect the input cable to the cigarette lighter socket of the vehicle.
3. (Optional) To operate the system in the FR3-BP with the FR3-VPS attached:

External GPS Receivers

In most scenarios you can configure the FR Master as the GPS source for the Freerider III system.
However, you can also use the following external GPS receivers with Freerider III:

Bluetooth GPS Receiver: You can store the receiver in the inside pocket at the top
of the Freerider III backpack.

To recharge a Bluetooth GPS receiver, connect the cable that came with the
receiver to the DCP port of the FR3-CORE.

2.4 Freerider III Use Case Configurations

This section describes the different system configurations that represent the best
tradeoff between number of devices, equipment volume, weight, and measurement
environment.

2.4.1 Portable Original Device Antenna Use Case

This configuration, as seen in figure 2-2, has the lowest weight and is best-suited for
measurement campaigns in pedestrian areas, and public transportation with expected
reasonable coverage.
In this configuration, the devices in the top cover are unmodified and use the original
device internal RF antennas. The 15 cm spacing between the phones offers a reasonable isolation for urban environments with reasonable coverage and multipath propagation. For the optional scanner, you can place a multi-band dipole paddle antenna in
the top cover.

2.4.2 External Antenna Use Case

The external antenna configuration has the lowest risk for receiver blocking issues and
is recommended for measurements in rural areas with poor coverage.
This configuration requires a different top cover than the standard FR3-CORE top
cover as well as different devices that have been modified for use with external antennas.

The modified devices in the top cover have RF pigtails, which are attached to up to
four 4-port RF combiners, one of which is connected to the RF port of the scanner. You
can mount 4 dipole paddle external antennas on the outside of the top cover, that is, 2
main vertical antennas on the side and 2 secondary horizontal antennas on the back.
You can also connect external vehicle roof antennas to the RF combiners.
The additional RF components add a maximum of 800 g to the weight of the Portable
Original Device Antennas configuration.
The advantage of the external antenna configuration is a more equal and higher
device-to-device RF isolation. The improved isolation is due to the increased antenna
spacing of 28 cm and an additional minimum isolation of 14 dB is the result of RF
combiner insertion loss. Devices that are connected to the same combiner have a typical minimum isolation of 23 dB.
For MIMO functionality, the main and the diversity antennas of a device require separate external antennas, that is, you need to connect the main and the diversity antennas to different RF combiners.

2.4.3 Ad Hoc Vehicle Use Case

You can easily use Freerider III in a vehicle for ad hoc campaigns without the need for
permanent changes to the vehicle. To extend the usability of the system, you can use
the FR3-VPS power supply. For more information, see chapter 2.3.6.2, "Vehicle Power
Supply (FR3-VPS)", on page 37.
For the best cooling performance, place the Freerider III system in the air conditioned
passenger compartment of the vehicle. If possible, keep the system in an upright position for maximum airflow.

An improperly secured Freerider III system can cause injury in the event of an
accident.
Ensure that the system is in a secure place before you drive. The best practice is to
hang the backpack on the back of the front passenger seat, with the shoulder straps
draped over the seat and the sternum strap fastened across the front of the seat. If
possible, you can also use the hip strap to secure Freerider III in place. If you cannot
place the Freerider III in an upright position, put the Freerider III on the floor of the
vehicle with the straps facing down.

Placing the Freerider III system on a cushioned surface can cause overheating.
Ensure that the airflow to the base of the backpack is not blocked.

2.4.4 Permanent Vehicle Use Case

The bottom part of FR3-CORE has 8 mounting holes for M4 screws, which you can
use to mount the FR3-CORE directly to a vehicle chassis or to an equipment plate in a
vehicle. In this case, you do not need the FR3-BP backpack.

Freerider III has the following campaign modes:

"Simple": QualiPoc automatically sets "Single job" or "Job sequence" according to

the selected test
In "Simple" mode, you cannot specify scheduling or add or remove FR Slaves from
a running campaign.

"Advanced": Allows you to specify scheduling options, add or remove FR Slaves

If you select the "Start Scanner Measurement" check box, QualiPoc validates the
"Scheduling" and "Cycles" parameters before starting the measurement.

3.3.2 Job Types

You can run the following types of jobs on each slave during a campaign:

"Single Job": Sequence of single data and single call tests in which a new session
starts for each test sequence cycle
A single job only generates one measurement file for each campaign and applies
the same forcing, access point, and capture options to all of the tests in the job.
You cannot configure a "Speech Double Ended" as a single job.

"Job Sequence": Sequence of jobs with configurable tests

A job sequence creates a measurement file for each job execution cycle in the
sequence. You can also individually configure the forcing, access point, and capture options for each job in the sequence. You can use a job sequence to configure
a Speech Double Ended job; however, you cannot include other jobs in the
sequence.

Replaying Measurement Files in NetQual NQView

4.4 Replaying Measurement Files in NetQual NQView

You can use NetQual NQView to replay multiple measurement files. During the playback, you can open monitors for different quality parameters to observe the progress of
a test and search for points of interest in the monitors such as dropped calls, signaling
messages, and so on. You can also search for measurement files that contain specific
parameters such as technology, operator, KPI thresholds, and RF channel numbers.
NQView also allows you to export certain data in CSV, Google Earth, and MapInfo format. For more information, see the Manual NQView.pdf document.
When you load multiple measurement files, NQView uses the device ID to distinguish
between the devices. NQView automatically assigns unique device IDs when you configure a system, for example, a Benchmarker II system. For QualiPoc Handheld and
QualiPoc Freerider devices, you need to manually assign device IDs on the phones.
For more information, see the Manual - QualiPoc Android.pdf document.

Analyzing Measurement Data with NetQual NQDI

4.5 Analyzing Measurement Data with NetQual NQDI

NetQual NQDI is designed to help you to perform an in-depth analysis of your measurement data, for example, a detailed analysis of mobile network services and protocols. NQDI can quickly analyze CS and PS calls to help you to determine the main factors for network. NQDI mapping support includes more than 500 pre-defined map plot
items in a powerful and fully configurable plot engine that supports MapInfo and Google Earth. This engine also supports configurable binning on grid or latitude-longitude
precision. NQDI can generate reports in Excel format based on the measurement data.
These reports can contain success rate and average pivot tables with PDF, CDF, and
Pie charts. NQDI also has a trending sort function that can group data into time frames
from one hour up to a year. In addition to the default extended set of NQDI reports, you
can customize your own KPI report with the KPI report generator. For more information
about NetQual NQDI please see Manual NQDI.pdf.
If you want to include scanner data in the QualiPoc Freerider III measurement files,
you need to SwissQual "MF file data copier" tool before you import the files. See chapter 4.5.1, "Including Scanner and GPS Measurement Data", on page 93 for more

Limitations
Measurement Jobs

A Limitations
The following sections describes the main limitations for Freerider III. For a complete
description of the limitation, see the QualiPoc release notes.

A.1 Measurement Jobs

Freerider III measurement jobs have the following limitations:

Servers for the IPERF tests require different port numbers for simultaneous connections

Multiple or intensive POP3 access during Email receive tests can result in the
email account being blocked by the email provider

CDMA scanner measurements are not supported

Freerider III only supports the internal GPS receiver of the FR Master tablet.

A.2 Battery Level and Disk Space

The following conditions prevent a measurement job from starting on the phone:

Battery level: Configurable threshold value

< 150 MB of free space on SD card

The following conditions cause a running job to stop:

Battery level: Default value is 5%

< 100 MB of free space on SD card

Manual Freerider III 03

97

SwissQual...QualiPoc

Limitations
Battery Level and Disk Space

If the phone is connected to the charger with a USB cable, the battery might not charge
fast enough to compensate for the power consumption of tests that use HS and LTE
technologies. In such a scenario, the phone can suddenly turn off when the battery
level drops below 5% despite being connected to a charger.
You can view the battey level and free space warnings on the "Log" tab.
