New Station Intermodal of Setúbal

Some time has passed since I wrote an article on coastal areas, leaving some tips on
what should be done in Setúbal, based on my experience in the management of the
riverside area of Lisbon, as Commercial Director of the Port of Lisbon in 2003 and
2004:
Summary here are some:
• Buildings should be small, transparent, away from the water, beautiful, sober, fit into
the existing environment;
• The priority should be for open spaces, large and quality for human walking and
simple enjoyment of the public, but with beauty and quality;
• They must prevail terraces facing the sea, but with high quality furniture, without
advertising;
• should be assigned priority to public places, bars, restaurants, gardens, sidewalks and
public infrastructure, preferably around docks for pleasure;
• The property must be very small and away from water (200 m).

In this context, I felt a great pride in being Setubalense when I visited the new urban
park, which was very close to the River Sado and can be used by the city's population,
for the first time can enjoy the river in a spacious, open and decent .

Continue to the extension of the already stunning work that promises to transform a city
Setúbal equal to other cities. Now they need to relocate Polis yards away children to
fall. Who will see the urban park that the yards are hardly there.
Bask in the urban park to connect to the green park of the waves, near the fishing dock,
always in open spaces and green, no big trees, no large buildings. Offer the best area of
the city the population to free enjoyment. Thanks.

The coastal area should always have only one of two functions:
a) economic activities linked to the sea, such as cargo ports, marinas, fishing, tourism,
beach;
b) large open areas of public enjoyment and recreation.

So, do not understand the need to make a major intermodal station by the sea. No need
to stay there and is a waste of riverfront for functions that can be better organized or
otherwise, elsewhere. Consider:

Alternative - Extension Station Square from Brazil to the area of Training Center
Barreiros or relocation of the station on Thursday Azeda

Sour Square Brazil, Escola Barreiros

Advantages
• Direct connection to the highways, the road of Palmela, the road of Alentejo and the
road Azeitão / Lisbon without going through the center of Setubal;
• Reduction of journey times for users of buses and trains;
• Expulsion from the urban center, as is mandatory rules for intermodal centers
connecting to the outside of the city;
• Do not overload or congested the city with regional buses and cars looking for
parking, connection to public transport (rail or highway to Lisbon and other cities);
• Do not involve enormous costs in the relocation of the existing port terminal in
Fontainhas (where?), Or the loss of a port area of high value and national funds for large
river vessels critical to the industries of paper, steel, cement etc..
• Resolve the best big mass movement by road and rail, creating spaces outside the city,
who arrive;

Both ferries, as the center of Setubal could be linked to the intermodal station outside
the buses of 10 to 10 minutes and / or light rail, using the railway line passing through
the conventional Quebedo and can also build up a new stop in Fontainhas, after the
tunnel, making life easier for those who work in Troia and facilitating the movement of
great summer for beaches.

The river link, and will only be significant in summer, does not justify the onerous costs
of congestion in the city and the relocation of the port of Setúbal by investing in road
and railway station in the intermodal center of Setubal, the Fontainhas. Neither does it
justify the disadvantages of the useless occupation of river front buildings of the
intermodal station and parking for travelers outside the city. The river link is best served
by a shuttle from a station outside the city, bringing the regional buses and private cars
of travelers to the city center, wasting time looking not so keen to get in Setúbal and
wasting time and space to setubalensis.
