Martin Miller
20 Sunny Style
Fusion Licks
Lick 1 (1-3-5-7 Exercise)
MARTIN SAYS:
Over the course of the rest of the licks, well discover several options for scale choices. Your
ultimate goal should be to treat every chord of the progression as an individual entity, rather
than playing around a chord center. This is why for now you should learn to play only the
chord tones over each and every one of those chords. Those notes are the root, third, fifth
and seventh (flatten the 3, 5 or 7 depending on the chord type), hence the name 1-3-5-7
exercise. No improvising or variations allowed for now, the key to learning how to improvise
is to limit yourself! Also try to discover different fingerings and positions for the arpeggios
other than the ones weve given you in the transcription.
