a magnetic fluid that, in presence of a magnetic field
directily controlled by the reference ECU, modifies quicly
viscosity. Hence we have a kind of virtual valve,

The features of the road are

communicated in real time to the
Delphi ECU thanks to the signals of
Potenziometro
the four contactless potentiometers,
which are applied to each suspension.
Ammortizzatore
Then, considering the relationship
between fluid pressure ad oil flow
through the shock absorber piston,
The ECU regulates the shock absorber with variable currents applied to each
shock
solenoid valve. The stiffness setting is indipendent in all four
suspensions, increasing the confort and keeping the car stable in all conditions.

Suspensions
Front suspensions

The front suspension archetype is typically double wishbone, made by TRW.

Ferrari Academy
16

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions
Rear suspensions

The rear suspensions archetype is Multilink. This geometry increases the

longitudinal flexibility of the suspension (with a better comfort) and keeps a high
cross stiffness ( good handling). Thereby the suspensions have a better capacity
to absorbe the ground roughness (longitudinal impacts) and a lower vibration
and noise level.

Ferrari Academy
19

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions
Though its particular shape and machining, the lower lever is essentially a triangle

Ferrari Academy
20

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions
The upper lever is an essential
element to determine the correct
camber, which can be achieved
thanks to the special adjustment
shims.
IMPORTANT: use only the special
shims prescribed in the spare part
manual to avoid dangerous
geometry modifications due to step
out or deformations of the shims
themselves.

The shims have specific thickness

values from 0,5 to 4 mm.

Ferrari Academy
21

Suspensions
The toe-in tie-rod nut requires a special torque wrench for proper tightening.

Ferrari Academy
22

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions

The vertical connecting rod contributes

to increasing suspension stiffness,
preventing the wheel from turning
under load and maintaining the correct
wheel toe in.

Ferrari Academy
23

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions

The rear shock absorber coupling point

sits low on the lower suspension arm
and is misaligned with respect to the
wheel axle.

Ferrari Academy
24

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions
This geometry has also allowed the suspension coupling points to be
moved back, so that there is enough space for housing the fuel tank.

Ferrari Academy
25

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions
In addition, thanks to the new chassis, the retractable hard top can be
properly be fitted in its bay.
Actually, no part of the chassis interferes with the luggage compartment
(see the comparison in the figure).

Ferrari Academy
26

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions
Also the front shock absorber coupling points
on the chassis have been modified to facilitate
chassis removal. In addition, this is a useful
solution to assure the correct visibility angle
for the driver, as the front part of the chassis
has been lowered.

Ferrari Academy
27

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions
Instead of the conventional Flanblocks, the vehicle is equipped with
Silentblocks, for improved handling and noise reduction.

Ferrari Academy
28

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions
The Silent block is made up of a pin integral with the chassis, a vulcanized
(hence rigid) rubber bushing and a steel casing integral with the suspension arm.

Ferrari Academy
29

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions
When the suspension shakes, the arm turns and twists the vulcanized material.
These joints are thus flexible, and allow flexible movements on the three axles.

Ferrari Academy
30

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions

Torsion during shaking

The vulcanized rubber of the Silentblocks has a precise preload and, at

the moment, if this joint wears out,
the entire lever must be replaced.

It is essential that the angular position

of the bushing with respect to the
suspension lever is exact.
If this position is not fully accurate,
the suspension would malfunction

Ferrari Academy
31

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Suspensions
The front hub carriers are connected to the lever with new bevel gear pairs and
not ring gears.

Ferrari Academy
32

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

N.B: To ensure a proper interference-fitting for the bevel gear pair, you must
check that the bushing and the joint are clean.
If not, fastening will not be correct, not even when tightening the fastening bolt
to torque.

Electronic Brake Prefill (EBP)

There is normally an air gap between the discs and the pads (achieved thanks to
the rollback function) which prevents the pads from adhering to the discs when
there is no pressure on the brake pedal.
Rollback is a typical feature of all braking systems and, based on its calibration,
varies the system response time when the brake pedal is depressed; it must be a
compromise between safety (promptness of response) and efficiency (reduction
of friction-induced loss).

Ferrari Academy
42

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

BOSCH 8.0 ESP Premium

Ferrari Brake Prefill (FBP)

The EBP function is a new ESP strategy which, based on the driving style and
conditions, eliminates the play between the pads and the discs by applying slight
pressure before the driver starts braking.
In this way, a sort of variable and not fixed rollback is obtained which, depending
on the conditions, optimises the promptness of system response.

Ferrari Academy
43

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

BOSCH 8.0 ESP Premium

Brake Disc Wiping (BDV)

The main purpose of this function is to detect when it rains or when the road is
wet, using the rain sensor signals and as a result apply a pressure of 1.2 bar to the
hydraulic system for 1.5 seconds.
This action produces a braking torque which is always kept below the
deceleration sensing threshold and dries the disc so that optimal braking
promptness is ensured.

As long as the wet conditions persist, the procedure is repeated every 300
seconds.

Emergency braking

Applying the EPB lever while driving, the emergency braking function controlled
by the ESP is activated. Braking immediately produces a deceleration of 4 m/s,
which goes up to the maximum value of 6 m/s in two seconds. Deceleration is
therefore not abrupt and does not affect vehicle stability.
Emergency braking can be interrupted at any time by once again operating the
lever. If not, the vehicle will slow down until it stops.

Vehicle configuration
PROXY (online system configuration programming) is a string of 255 bytes

stored at the end of line (EOL) by some ECUs for vehicle customisation purposes.
Examples of possible customisation are:
RH/LH drive, number of doors, sales market, wheel/tire circumference, tank
filling curve, OPT, km/mi, Hi-Fi type.

Currently the nodes that need to store (if present) the PROXY are:
NBC, NQS, NCL, NIT, NSP, NAB
The B-CAN ECUs directly store the PROXY, but not the C-CAN ECUs!
The C-CAN ECUs that need to be configured (e.g. NFR)
They read the EOL CONFIGURATION message transmitted by the NBC

Space frame chassis

aluminium bodywork

Introduction

The following is an outline of the technical features of the space

frame chassis and the aluminium alloy bodywork. This description is
aimed at providing basic information for the Service Network
technicians.
For more detailed information and for the exclusive repair
techniques, please refer to the California aluminium chassisbodywork repair manual.

Ferrari Academy
140

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Space frame chassis

aluminium bodywork

To reduce the vehicle weight, the entire body [ chassis-bodywork] is made of

aluminium alloy parts, since the specific weight of aluminium is 1/3 [ 2.70
kg/dm3 ] that of steel [ 7. 85 kg/dm3 ].
Despite the considerable weight reduction [ about 40% ] achieved using
aluminium construction parts for the space frame and bodywork, stability and
resistance values are higher that those obtained using steel components. In
addition, the sub-assemblies in aluminium alloy are less subject to
flexure/torsion and are highly corrosion-resistant.
Ferrari Academy
141

Ferrari Spa All rights are reserved

Space frame chassis

aluminium bodywork

Advantages compared to a steel chassis and bodywork

Reduced weight

about 40%

greater rigidity

Greater resistance to warping

Greater dynamic resistance to flexure

Greater dynamic resistance to torsion

NOTE: To obtain the necessary resistance, the chassis and bodywork undergo
further heat treatment at the end of their production process (cataphoresis and
painting cycle)
High resistance to corrosion

Space frame chassis

aluminium bodywork

Aluminium alloys are almost all recyclable

The oxygen in the air creates a thin layer of oxide on the surface of the

aluminium parts, which is continually renewed and protects the material

Good resistance values: between 60 and 520 N/mm2
Good deformability and therefore easier to machine
Non-toxic material
Suitable for Mig-Wig welded joints
[ Mig = arc welding with inert gas; Wig = arc welding with inert gas with
tungsten electrode]
Drawbacks
Construction costs
Less suitable for industrial use; more suitable for artisanal production

The California space-frame structure is composed off three elements :

- Extruded section bars
- cast nodes
- reinforcement sheet

[ made with extrusion technique, die-cast. ]

[ made in special microcasting ]
[ in aluminium largely made by forging ]

Most of the components parts of the space frame are welded to each other
[Mig welding arc welding with inert gas -100% Argon*** ] and some are
riveted and bolted.

*** Argon = inert gas to prevent chemical reactions in welding which would
attack the aluminium.

California MODULAR ALUMINIUM SPACE FRAME

This is the first Ferrari model that uses a modular aluminium space -frame

chassis :

Greater efficiency and reduction of service times

Easier maintenance for the customer
Less time required to replace the damaged parts
Lower operating costs
For proper removal and refitting of the modular chassis it is absolutely essential to
consult the repair manual

Space frame repair techniques

Pulling and straightening techniques used for steel load-bearing bodies to restore
the shape are not permitted for space frame.
In the event of damage all the parts involved [detectable only with the specific jigs
and straightening bench] must be replaced.
To ensure the correct dimensional positions on X-Y-Z, the new parts must be
positioned using the specific jigs and straightening bench.
No repair operations may be performed on the cast parts; if they are damaged
they must be replaced

Space frame chassis

aluminium bodywork

Aluminium bodywork repair techniques

Like the space frame, damaged parts must be replaced. nevertheless, for slight
damage, straightening work is permitted with heating to max 200 degrees.

Aluminium alloy materials are more fragile than steel and consequently more subject
the cracks and breakup when worked cold
Caution:
Temperatures higher than 200 degrees may affect the mechanical properties and
consequently change the material behaviour during impact.

Repairs on the space frame chassis and the aluminium bodywork may only be
performed by authorised body shops and qualified Ferrari staff

Contact corrosion

Aluminium is highly resistant to corrosion

as long as it does not come into contact with other materials with different
potential.
When different materials with different potentials (e.g. steel and aluminium)
touch each other, contact corrosion is formed.
The metal with the lower potential is decomposed.
The greater the difference between the potentials the stronger the
decomposition.

Contact corrosion - Example

When particles of steel that may deposit in the joins and/or slits
[between two different materials, e.g. steel/aluminium] come into contact with the
humidity in the air, it inevitably results in contact corrosion phenomena.
Contact corrosion is mainly formed:
If using joining parts such as screws, nuts, washers, etc. without precoating

[ e.g. Dacromet zinc alloy - Delta tone ]

During repair work in the body shop when using tools not specifically for
aluminium or unsuitable working areas, which cause contamination of the
aluminium.
General contamination of the aluminium with other materials irrespective of the
process used.
Repairs on the space frame chassis and the aluminium bodywork may only be
performed by authorised body shops and qualified Ferrari staff
