3 GENERAL
Tanks shall be furnished in accordance with this Specification and Appendix A and B.Any
applicable statutory rules or regulations, such as national codes shall have precedence over less
restrictive requirements.
Unless otherwise specified, tanks shall be designed, fabricated, inspected, and tested in accordance
with API Standard 650, as modified herein. Shop assembled storage tanks shall be designed,
fabricated, inspected, and tested in accordance with API Standard 650, Appendix J.
Corrosion allowances, if specified, shall be added to shell, bottom, and roof plates and to all
exposed surfaces of structural members and other tank internals.
VENDOR's proposal shall include a completed data sheet for each tank.
When a design for earthquake loading is required, the design criteria of API Standard 650
Appendix E shall apply.

4 DESIGN
4.1 Bottoms
Tank bottoms shall be sloped as required by Project Specifications.

4.2 Shells
Shells shall be designed in accordance with API Standard 650 (Basic or Appendix A)
requirements.
For the API Standard 650, Basic design, VENDOR shall determine and state separately the
cost of intermediate wind girders for the specified wind velocity. VENDOR shall state the
maximum wind velocity the tank will withstand without the intermediate wind girders.
Shell thickness shall be designed for product specific gravity of 1. VENDOR shall determine
separately the cost of tank design for the actual product specific gravity.
Supplemental welding requirements applicable to shell joints are as follows:
a) All horizontal butt joints shall have complete penetration and fusion.
b) Square groove butt joints shall be permitted to a maximum plate thickness of 7 mm,
except that this may be increased to 9 mm plate thickness if submerged Arc Welding
process is used, or if one side of the weld is back gouged to form a groove.

as noted, and they shall be provided with the specified type of seals. Pontoon bulkheads shall
be completely welded for liquid tightness. Roofs shall be designed to avoid fatigue failure
caused by wind effects.
Pantograph-type seal shoes shall be electrically bonded to the roof with stainless steel shunts
at intervals of 3 m, maximum, on the tank circumference. In tanks to be protected with non
conductive internal shell coatings, the roof shall be bonded to the shell by a suspended cable
arrangement. If the hanger mechanism is in the vapor space below the seal stainless steel
shunts shall be provided between the shoe and roof above the seal area. At least one shunt
shall be provided for each hanger.
Nonmetallic-type seals shall be equipped with a metallic weather hood unless secondary
seals are provided.
Seals shall be of the foam-filled type and shall be liquid mounted.
For tanks without fixed foam systems on floating roofs over 30.5 m diameter, the top wind
girder shall be at least 76 cm wide, located about 1 m below the top of the shell or shell
extension and shall have a handrail for the entire circumference. Access shall be provided
from the stair to the wind girder.
When a secondary seal is not required, provision shall be made for possible future installation
of a secondary seal.
Roof support legs shall be adjustable to carry the roof in an upper cleaning position with a
2 m minimum clearance and a lower operating position as required for clearance of tank
internals.
Roof rotation shall be prevented by means of a vertical guide pipe. If specified, this pipe shall
be arranged to permit sampling through it.

Appendix C, Paragraph C.3.4.
2- Aluminum deck, supported above the liquid surface by closed tubular members. The
minimum volume of the floats shall be sufficient to keep the roof floating when onehalf the floats are punctured.
3- Rigid-molded polyurethane foam interlocking floating deck panels. Each panel shall be
self-buoyant and impervious to the product throughout and shall have a density of
approximately 350 kg/m3.
4- Aluminum floating deck panels made of an aluminum honeycomb core bonded to
