ITS521 Mini Project : E-Commerce website

(70%)
Instructions
This course requires the students to undertake a group mini project The format of
the report and the description are provided below. The submission date for the
Final Report and the presentation will be on the last week of class. Each
presentation will take about 15 20 minutes. All members of the group must be
present during the project presentation.
The e-Commerce website must follow these requirements. Extra marks will be
given if there are additional features other than this basic requirements, and
marks deduction for group that dont follow these requirements.
Requirements for e-Commerce website:
1. Categories:
Have clear categories on your site to list your products into, and have your
categories displayed somewhere easy to access, e.g. across the top or on
the side columns.
You must have at least 5 categories and 10 products in each categories.
Each category must have its name and description, and each product must
have its name, description, price and image.
2. Featured and Top Sellers Products
Often, e-commerce sites have certain products they want to highlight.
These products are usually items that are on sale/clearance, top selling, or
new items that have recently been added to the inventory.
You must put these products on the front page of the site, either in the
middle or in the right module. List not more than 5 items in Featured
Products and 5 items in Top Seller Products.
3. Shopping Cart
A shopping cart is almost always present in e-commerce sites. The
shopping cart is usually the first screen in a checkout process. Products in
the users shopping cart are typically displayed in a table/matrix format.
Its purpose is to display the items that the user has decided to purchase.
Its a highly functional feature that gives you a summary of the things
youre buying.
You must include these elements in shopping cart:

Products name
Products description (if the product name needs further
explanation)
Products price
Total cost of products in the shopping cart
Product image thumbnail that displays a preview of the item

Quantity box that allows users to modify the number of items they
want to
Purchase
Checkout button

4. Search Box
Having a clear and well-positioned search box is crucial to an e-commerce
sites. The ability to search an e-commerce website is very important
because many online buyers have a specific item that they are looking for.
A search box is a powerful site feature that will improve findability and
navigability.
You must put the search box on the front page. You can utilize Google
searching engine or other method that suitable for your site. The results
must be accurate.
5. Social Media Presence:
Let your customers know that your site available on social networking
sites, by having Social Media Logos on your site, some companies use
social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter as their customer
support systems, interacting with their customers for enquires related to
their orders.
Create Facebook and Twitter account for your website and link them from
your website front page.
6. Customer login & registration:
Give the option for customers to login or register on your site, so when
they do return they dont need to enter all their billing and payment details
in again, giving them the flexibility to quickly check out.
Provide a link on your front page for customer to login. If they dont have
an account, provide a link for them to register as a new customer in login
page. This login page will appear if they click checkout button in their
shopping cart (if they dont login before)
7. Administration page
Administrator must be able to login and edit information such as product
name, description, price, discount, add category, add new product, delete
product, etc.

The Report Format


The report of the e-Commerce website should be between 25 50 pages using
Arial 11pt, NOT including the appendix and single spacing. The content structure
is as follows:
1. Introduction / Background
The overview of the project undertaken, with respect to the title chosen, should
be in this part. A little background of the system should also be included as to
provide enough information in understanding what is to be expected of the
system and its capabilities. In short, this part answers the question on what
triggers the initial decision to develop the project.
2. Objective, Scope, Problem Description
Once the clarification has been made on the project/system, the objectives as to
what are the benefits that could be gained from the project or the advantages of
it.
A project without a scope could prove futile and disastrous because there are no
guidelines to follow. The scope should explain what are the areas to be expected
in the system rather than what areas are not. In simpler terms, the scope dictates
what should be in the system and the unavailability of other features should not
be questioned. In addition it should also highlighted the targeted customer of the
system
Problem description highlights the problems that are experienced in the nonexistence of such a system. It is hoped that with the development of the system,
there is a decline in the problems or total eradication of the same.
3. Business Process
This section will clarify business processes that are related to the project. Draw
the diagram to indicate the flow of processes and the the rules and regulation
that are implemented by the system.
4. System Design
Few blue prints are required before a system is developed. These documents will
ensure that the developer create a system that meet the user expectation. It will
also helps the developer when coding, testing and implement the system. Explain
each diagram / information that are included in this section clearly. Among the
expected diagram are

Context diagram
Data flow diagram

Use case diagram

ERD diagram

Info about all tables and fields

Functional hierarchy diagram / site map diagram

Standard interface

Naming convention table, field, component of screen,


program

5. Implementation
This section describes
a) the hardware and software requirement of the system
b) the implementation of the system. Explain the purpose of each screen and
action that need to be executed by the users. This section is the user reference
guideline of the system.
6. Conclusion
This part sums up all the preparation, development and findings done in the
development of the system. It also provides information on the realization and
achievement of the system
7. Appendix
Related diagram(s) and source code

Allocation of Marks
Allocation of marks is as follows: 20% for the report and 50% for the system
development + presentation.
Extra marks will be given if there are additional features other than this basic
requirements, and marks deduction for group that dont follow these
requirements.
Organization of Teams
The Group Project is carried out by a team not more than 5 students.
