OR OVER THREEdecades St. Davids Community Health Foundation has presented a signature series of fundraising parties and special events that benefit the needs of the Central
Texas health community. These lavish parties are held at some of the most extravagant private
estates in the Austin area. Other venues range from rustic wine cellars, to ritzy restaurants, to the
Darrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium. Since 2005, the Foundation has dedicated the proceeds of
Toast of the Town events to the W. Neal Kocurek St. Davids Scholarship Fund. In honor of Dr. Kocureks
legacy as a visionary civic leader and longtime President and CEO of St. Davids Health Care system, the
Fund provides college scholarships to graduates from surrounding counties interested in health-related
careers. Since this program began in 2005, 285 Neal Kocurek scholarships have been awarded.
The St. Davids Foundation Community Fund presented the 2015 preview party, Preludes and
Accolades, to show appreciation for the generosity of this years Toast of the Towns hosts and donors.

Granite Security
SECURING HOMES AND BUSINESSES
STORY AND PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN
ECURITY ISperhaps the most fundamental requirement man needs to survive and
to thrive. Generally speaking, citizens of the United States enjoy remarkable securities guaranteed by the Constitution, the rule of law and a civil and democratic society.
Imagine living in Nigeria and learning that your daughter, studying at a private school, had been
kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram. Those girls, kidnapped over a year ago, have still
not been found.
Beyond the security we enjoy as Americans, neighborhoods in the greater Lakeway-Bee Cave
communities have, for decades, enjoyed the safety of small towns, remote from the types of crimes
that plague larger cities. That immunity from threat has diminished with growth and the transformation of these sleepy villages into suburban communities.
Local Police Departments urge drivers to lock it or lose it, and residents are also urged to keep
their garage doors closed and locked during the day and at night. A review of the Lakeway Police
Departments April Crime Reports revealed 14 thefts, 1 breaking and entering and 1 property crime.
One simple way to protect the security of your property and your loved ones is to install a
home system that monitors security and fire. Granite
Security Systems, a family business locally owned by
Lakeway residents Susan Sumners and Kellye Babin,
will celebrate its 18th anniversary this year. Check
out their reviews on YELP!
Granite Security works with builders to pre-wire
new homes and can also add a security system to an
existing home or business. They also offer locallybased monitoring of existing systems, no matter who
installed them.
Granite Securitys highly-trained technicians are
masters of all the new advances in security technologies, including the installation of sophisticated camera systems that can be viewed remotely from your
phone or computer. This feature allows residents to
check on their home from work or while traveling.

After attending 12 schools by the time she was 14, a string of lucky breaks
made Elenas dream of becoming a fashion model a reality. At 16, she was
signed by the Ford Agency and set off for Paris to begin what became a highly
successful career as a print and fashion model, ultimately returning to live and
work in New York. Her marriage to Houston oil man and entrepreneur Gregg
Davis in 1994 exposed her to a life of even greater wealth and privilege. But
later circumstances, including the death of her well-loved father-in-law, led her
to re-examine her life, and particularly, her childhood. Its chaotic, transient
nature made her believe she didnt belong anywhere, a feeling often shared by
the homeless. One hot summer day in Houston, Elena was approached at an
intersection by a homeless woman. She was already reaching for some money
to give her, but the woman didnt want money. She wanted water. And this
was the inspiration for I AM WATERS, whose goal is to provide the homeless
with fresh, clean bottled water, delivered with a daily, inspirational message
of hope and love. Partnerships with existing homeless organizations, shelters
and churches handle distribution through existing networks or facilities.
Mitchell Gibbs, Executive Director of Front Steps, noted that because of the
impact of I AM WATERS, last summer there were no calls to 911 for heat-related emergencies. He also emphasized that Austin needs more housing stock and
housing vouchers because housing, not shelter, is the solution to homelessness.

Pink!
HE FOURTH ANNUALPink! party, an event benefiting Susan G. Komen Austin, was held on April
24 at the Hyatt Regency Austin and raised nearly $400,000. Karen Shultz and Jennifer Stevens cochaired the event which was presented by Texas Breast Specialists and Texas Oncology. Pink! was started in 2012 and, prior to this event, had raised more than $733,000 to help save lives and fight breast cancer. As a
fundraising event, it ranks second only to Komen Austins Race for the Cure .
More than 400 supporters gathered in the Zilker Ballroom and enjoyed a celebratory evening that included
a VIPink cocktail reception, sponsored by Lexus of Austin, an a cappella performance by One Note Stand, dinner, an awards ceremony and a live auction.
As Interim Executive Director Karen Shultz noted in her address: This week
U.S. government researchers released new statistics on breast cancer cases. The
incidence of breast cancer in women is on the rise. Researchers predict a 50%
increase of new breast cancers by 2030. That is staggering! The keynote speech
was given by Dr. Powel Brown, a breast medical oncologist and Komen funded
researcher, who spoke on the progress that has been made in improvements in
diagnosis and treatments for the disease.
Laurel Kinney;
Kathleen Lucente, Board Member; Cynthia McGrail
The event was also an opportunity to honor some standout individuals and organizations who have dedicated themselves to supporting Komen Austins mission.
The Pink Diamond Awards, presented by St. Davids Foundation, went to community partners Texas Oncology and Texas Breast Specialists. Iris Davis, Deborah
Davis Groves and Randall D. Groves were also recognized for their philanthropic
efforts. News anchor Terri Gruca and the outreach group Women in Strides both
received Excellence in Advocacy Awards. John Mathieson received the Outstanding
Board Member
Volunteer Award for his many years of commitment to the organization.
Julie Sanders, Scott Sanders
Special recognition went to Amy Mosier, who received the Ana Sierra
Warrior Award. Mosier was already involved with Komen Austins Race for the
Cure before facing her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2014. Amazingly, Mosier
Maxine Roberts, Abby Argo, Vicki Roberts
decided to participate once again in Race for
Christen Edel,
Michelle Martin the Cure just two weeks after undergoing a
double mastectomy. She assembled a team of
133 friends and family, a group she named
The Breast is Yet to Come. Mosiers team
rallied to complete the race and raised an
impressive $11,000.
Since 1999, Komen Austin has invested
nearly $11 million into breast health services
and educational efforts in Bastrop, Caldwell,
Hays, Travis and Williamson counties. The
organization is committed to saving lives locally by removing barriers to care for uninsured
Ilona &

VER THE PASTfew seasons, there has been quite a bit of skinny on the fashion runway, and
that includes more than just the models. Skinny jeans, leggings and, yes, even jeggings. Most of us
have them and are proud to show off in our slim-cut trousers. But, a girl can get a bit tired from
so much sameness. Luckily, this season, designers are shaking things up with a variety of interesting pant
styles. The new silhouettes have a light, easy-breezy feel and, when paired with well-chosen tops and shoes,
give off just the right amount of cool-girl nonchalance. (If you need further convincing, think of pant-loving
style icons Katherine Hepburn and Diane Keaton!) Stylish yet less restricting, the new styles are perfect for
warm weather months.
The palazzo is the trouser equivalent to a fun, gypsy-style skirt. (Tip: a true palazzo is virtually indistinguishable from a long skirt when you are not in motion.) With the extra-wide palazzo style, youll want to refrain from
adding more volume on top. Pair with a sleeveless tank, close-fitting tee or a crop top instead.
Perhaps to our disbelief, a wide-leg 80s favorite has returned the culotte! Before you dismiss the cute
gaucho style, know that some designers have slightly modified the form, softening up its appearance by cropping it just above the ankle. These pants look great with a summery top and a pair of flat, Grecian-style sandals.
More slouchy than it is wide, the boyfriend cut is currently the style of choice among fashionable It girls.
Casual and cool, youve probably noticed a slew of celebrities and models sporting the new relaxed look. The
good news is the boyfriend is extremely versatile (available in everything from frayed denim to gauzy haremtype styles), making it perfect for both day and night. Tone down the boyfriends tomboy edge by adding ultrafeminine accessories like layered jewelry and ballet flats.
Remember when being spotted out and about in your workout gear was considered a fashion faux pas? This
time around, designers are introducing sporty track pants that are meant to be worn outside of the gym. Coined
the jogger, this relaxed style looks unexpectedly fresh when paired with a flowy evening top and heels.
If you want to embrace change this summer but simply cannot let go of your skinny pants, prints could be
a less drastic step to updating your look. Everyone from high-end designers to popular mass brands is offering
pants (both slim and wide-cut styles) in playful, eye-catching patterns. For the best effect, choose a solid, understated top and let your legs do the talking.

SUMMERS GETAWAY-INSPIRED FASHION
STORY BY MONALISA SAENZ
PHOTOS BY GERRY HANAN OF HANAN EXPOSURES
AIKIKI. SOUTH BEACH.Ipanema. St. Barts. Even if youve never set foot upon the sands
of these dreamy destinations, you can steal summer fashion inspiration that will have you envisioning fruity cocktails, turquoise waters and salty ocean air. Beautiful, beach-inspired looks
can be worn almost anywhere that summer takes you from an exotic island resort to your next-door neighbors pool party. The key to mastering this sexy yet effortless style is to remember a few basic rules. First,
lighten up! Dressing for the beach and anywhere else during summer means nixing stiff, heavy fabrics.
Second, choose items that can be worn multiple ways and layered over or under other pieces. Last but not
least, follow the anything-goes beach aesthetic by taking your daytime outfit into the evening.
Nothing says island siren like a long, cool dress. Fortunately, the maxi dress might be the most universally
flattering trend of the season and can be worn by everyone ranging from waif types to hourglass figures. The
ultra-long, lightweight maxi is breezy and casual but, thanks to its full, ground-skimming skirt, wont leave
you feeling overexposed. Wear the maxi over your favorite bikini during the day and, later, with statement
jewelry for a night on the town.
Channel your inner yacht-hopping fashionista by donning one of summers seductive cover-ups. This
season, designers have presented us with a wealth of options, including sheer mini-dresses, transparent tops
and colorful caftans. These flirty cover-ups are stylish solutions when deciding what to wear while hitting the
beach, or, for those more into the aprs-swim scene, for poolside cocktails. If the occasion calls for a more polished look, the cover-up is quickly transformed with the addition of structured, opaque pieces. For example,
try a caftan over slim pants or a sheer mini-dress over a brightly colored slip.
Even the most avid beach-goer knows a little bit of sunshine goes a long way. Protect your perfect complexion by topping off your ensemble with an oversized sun hat. The result is a chic, screen goddess-on-theFrench Riviera look.
What is a day at the beach without a fantastic new swimsuit? No longer dominated by string bikini styles,
swimwear has taken a fun turn, with many designers adding one-pieces and retro-style bikinis back into the
mix. This seasons one-piece is anything but boring, and many of the new styles show ample skin via provocative side cut-outs and plunging necklines. In a surprising twist, the trend for two-pieces this summer is
actually more coverage. Expect to see plenty of pin-up-girl-inspired, high-waisted briefs and wide-strap bikini
tops frolicking in the sand.

some point in their lives. For those not suffering from sleep disorders, sleep
is not being made a top priority. Rather, Americans are making choices which
impact sleep patterns such as television binge-watching, engaging in social
media or browsing the internet. In addition to keeping us up too late, electronic devices emit blue light which fools the body into thinking it is daytime.
Alarmingly, this sleeplessness epidemic not only affects adults but also
takes a toll on adolescents. Since they are still developing, teenagers need
more sleep than adults, usually 9.25 hours per night, yet it is estimated that
70 percent of high school students are sleep deprived. This consistent lack of
sleep increases teens risk of suicide, mood swings, and delinquency.
The need for a good nights sleep is powerful yet highly underestimated.
John Hoffman of the Public Good Projects points out that a few simple shifts
in habit can be very effective in combatting chronic fatigue. Some suggestions are:
Turn off electronic devices one hour before bedtime.
et up at the same time every day, no matter how little sleep you may
G
have had.
Sleep in a completely dark bedroom.
Hoffman states that lack of sleep is a surprisingly serious public health
issue, and it is essential to enlighten the public before the problem becomes
unmanageable. For more information on Sleepless in America, check your local
listings or http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/sleepless-in-america/.

NATURAL BIO HEALTH is a medical clinic located in Lakeway that specializes in bioidentical hormone treatment and medical weight loss. Board
certified physicians are on site Monday through Friday and the medical staff
has more than 70 years of medical experience.
Natural Bio Health is locally owned with 4 clinics in Texas. It was the
first clinic in Texas to offer bioidentical hormone treatment for men and
women. The medical staff was the first to recognize the connection between
hormones and weight loss and has successfully treated thousands of clients
over the past 15 years.
In the early years, the clinical practice served primarily female clients
who were menopausal, suffering from hot flashes, low energy, poor sleep
and excess belly fat. The clients would then refer family members and friends
who were enduring various conditions like difficult periods, migraines, poor
sleep, infertility, weight struggles, low energy and low sex drive. Many of
these women were using anti-depressants and other pharmaceutical drugs
and wanted to stop taking them.
Over the years, female patients would refer their husbands and fathers
and male friends to the clinic. As increasing numbers of men began to understand the benefits of hormone therapy, particularly testosterone, the number
of male patients increased. Natural Bio Health now serves a patient population that is made up of 40% men and 60% women. The client list ranges in
age from pre-teens to post baby boomers.
The clinic offers natural solutions to solve immediate health concerns and
prevention for the future.

POINT OF ORIGIN
Point of Origin is a go-to shopping destination for those in search of the perfect gift. The friendly and fashionable Lakeway boutique features an array of
covetable items, including fashion apparel, accessories, home dcor, gourmet products and, of course, unique gifts.
Point of Origin Managing Partner Jaime Cardinal is no stranger to retail.
The Indiana-born Lakeway resident began her career at the age of 15 and
first honed her skills at a small mom-and-pop candy store before eventually moving on to Nordstrom, where she held several management positions
and assisted in the opening of
Austins Barton Creek location. Cardinal, who boasts an
impressive 24 years in the retail
industry, always hoped to own
her own gift shop a dream
that was realized when she
purchased Point of Origin eight
years ago.
As Cardinal aptly puts it,
Point of Origin is where the celebration begins! A warm, inviting ambience is present throughout the store, where Cardinal and staff strive to make
shoppers feel like guests in their home. Customers are treated to snacks and
beverages as they shop (a bar is open in the afternoon for drinks), and store
associates are always on hand to guide shoppers through their selections.
In addition to its stellar customer service, Point of Origin provides free gift
wrapping with purchase and a loyalty program that offers discounts, access
to private events and special giveaways.
Since Cardinal and her parents (also partners in the business) purchased
Point of Origin, it has evolved from an 800-square-foot space to its current
3,500-square-foot location. The chic boutique proudly features many notable brands, including Brighton, Alex & Ani, Ivy Jane, Tribal, Johnny Was,
Michel Design Works and Scout Bags, to name a few. For Cardinal, merchandising the store and helping shoppers find the perfect gift are what she loves
most about her business. With items ranging from inexpensive to moderately
priced, the store promises something for everyone.
For more than 22 years, weve helped Lakeway celebrate birthdays,
anniversaries, holidays, new homes, Fridays, last chemo treatments, losing
ten pounds, says Cardinal. Theres always something to celebrate.
In addition to providing Lakeway residents with memorable gifts and a
one-stop shopping experience, Cardinal is committed to giving back to the
community and holds multiple fundraising events at her store each year
to support local causes. She is a member of the Womens Club of Greater
Lakeway and the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce. Cardinal was the
recipient of the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year
Award in 2009 and also received the organizations Citizen of the Year
Award in 2011.
When not at work, Cardinal enjoys spending time with her husband, Tim,
and their 7-month-old daughter, Piper James.

psychological insight into why mothers and sons fight at this stage. I was
simply looking for a way to inject more easy, light moments into our days.
He suggested we run. We had run together before and casually finished
some 5K races, but we had never made it a regular habit. He had never
before shown interest in consistent training and I was, to be honest, a little
protective of my own running schedule.
Running had been my sanctuary for almost two decades and I was
accustomed to escaping family life five times a week to meet a steady group
of friends and training partners. I wasnt sure how I would add another
layer to this carefully orchestrated routine, but I knew it was worth trying.
So thenext Saturdaymorning, I met my friends at our usual predawn
hour. I finished our 7-mile loop and while the rest of them kept going, I ran
home to meet my boy. He was still in his pajamas, on the computer, and
had not seen my reminder note. It was 29 degrees, there was hot coffee in
the kitchen, and I was starting to chill in my sweaty clothes. I nearly ditched
the whole idea. But as soon as I asked, Hey bud, still want to run a few with
me? he jumped up with a cheerfulYes!
The next 30 minutes were pure joy. Following his lead, we launched
into adventure runninghalf running, half exploring our neighborhood
and nearby trail. My boy zigzagged along the sidewalks, tightrope-walked
every curb he found, jumped over rock walls and benches, and paused
when he saw an interesting tree or funny graffiti. For every mile I ran, he
seemed to run a quarter more with his diversions.
He chattered about ideas for his latest cartoon series, and asked me
lots of ridiculousWhat Ifquestions. Even though weve passionately
covered the topic before, we spent at least a mile discussing why Super
Speed is obviously the best superpower ever.Even better than flying and
invisibility,we agreed.
Along the way we vowed to register for an upcoming
race where volunteers enthusiastically douse runners with
colored powdered until they look like toxic circus clowns.
After last years race, we were blowing blue gunk out of our
noses for days, so we decided this year to wear bandanas for
protection. We will be the Booger Bandana Brigade, Mom!
We will have a booger mascot! I can make us a booger logo
and everything!
And it was in the middle of this boogery monologue that
I had the distinct and intoxicating feeling that this moment
was exactly what we needed. There was lightness and laughter between us again.Welcome to your new Saturday morning routine,I thought.I am totally in.
A month later, our regular runs have not solved everything, of course, but the constant heaviness is gone. Knowing
that once a week I am guaranteed time with him that is void
of arguing and frustration somehow gives me more patience
and empathy on the other days.
We have found a simple space that contains only joy and
ease, and nothing could keep me from showing up there. I
could run for miles in it.

Book Launch
FOR THE UNRAVELING OF MERCY LOUIS
STORY AND PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN
OTTIE AND MARTINStevenson spent nearly two decades in New Orleans, a place all three of
their children call home. So Dottie and her daughter Brooke, both of whom now live in Lakeway
were excited to learn that Keija Parssinens second novel, THE UNRAVELING OF MERCY LOUIS,
is set in swampy Southeast Texas and steeped in Cajun culture. Their enthusiasm prompted a generous invitation for about sixty of their friends to gather at the beautiful Stevenson home on a morning in March in
order to celebrate Keija, a 1999 Lake Travis High School graduate. Brooke and Dottie cooked for two days
and created a feast of shrimp and grits, jambalaya, homemade pralines, and other New Orleans culinary
treasures, including some extra spicy Bloody Marys! Keija read an excerpt of the novel, which the New York
Times calls urgent, deliciously dark and sumptuously gothic, and then fielded questions from party-goers,
fondly recalling her excellent education in the Lake Travis schools. BookPeople sold copies of the novel on
site. Though you might have missed the mimosas that morning, you can still purchase a copy of the critically
acclaimed book about the downfall of a small towns golden girl at Barnes & Noble Bee Cave, BookPeople, or
online wherever books are sold.

her pre-military past and a sexual assault that occurred while in the Air
Force triggered her condition. According to Williston, frustration over the
lack of care and options available to her culminated
in a suicide attempt (one of several), and prompted
a move to Texas where her veteran brother lives.
Thankfully, Willistons situation did improve, but she
was still plagued by days when she did not want to
leave her house.
Williston found information about V.E.T.S. online
and experienced an instant feeling of camaraderie
after attending one of the organizations community
outreach events in Dripping Springs. She has completed V.E.T.S. 12-week program three times (participants can go through the program as many times
as they like) and decided to adopt her own horse
earlier this year. Willistons mare, Sweetie, lives on
the ranch and was adopted from Bluebonnet Equine
Humane Society. Prior to her rescue, Sweetie weighed 500 pounds about half the normal weight for a horse her age.
Williston, a mother of two, describes her time with Sweetie as part of
her safety plan, and she often drives twice a day from her Lake Travis
area home to visit her horse. Willistons lighthearted demeanor turns serious when she speaks of how V.E.T.S. both saved and changed her life.
Williston wants to acquire another rescued horse. When asked about
the added responsibility, Willistons response echoed the compassion that
is at the core of the V.E.T.S. program: I could be the person to let that
horse know that, hey, you are loved and cared for.
