DiversitechHoldings,aconsultingcompanyinRussiaandKazakhstanspecializingin
coiledtubing(CT),saidrecentlythatitsacidjetdrillingtechnologyissuitablefor
carbonatereservoirformations,whichareverycommonintheMiddleEast,accordingto
DaurenTukenov,chieftechnologyofficeratDiversitech.
Thenewtechnique,whichconsistsoftoolsandchemicals,aimstoincreasetherecovery
factortobeasgoodasacidfracturingafewtimes.Currently,dependingonsituationin
yourfield,youcanselectdifferentmethodsofstimulation,Tukenovsaid:cleaning,
acidizing,andhydraulicfracturing,conveyedthroughCT,oracidjetydrillingconveyed
throughCT.Meanwhile,acidjetdrillingcanenlargereservoircontactareaasgoodasacid
fracsand,therefore,(havethe)samedrainageimprovementresults.Theonlydifferenceis
thatthereislessenvironmentalimpact(and)lessequipment.
Thenewapproachconsistsofmakingholesintherockbydissolvingitwithacid,sothere
arenoreturnstothesurface.Normally,aciddrillingisdoneona2jointbendingtool.Our
toolissmallerindiameterandhas6jointbending,soitcanbitebetterintorockwallsand

makeaholeinit.Thisnewholecandrainnewfracturesthathavenotbeenconnectedtothe
wellbore,Tukenovsaid.
Acidjetdrillingisaninnovativetechnologyusedonalargescale.Themethodinvolves
creatingseveralsidehorizontalboreholesusingcoiledtubingandspecialassembliesinthe
uncasedpartoftheproductiveformation.Theuseofcoiledtubingenables(us)toperform
operationswithoutinvolvingawellworkoverteamandwithoutpullingtheequipmentout
ofthehole,Tukenovsaid.Thisensureswellcontrolatallstagesofthejobandreduces
timeandmoneyneededtoputthewellintooperation.
Thenewtechnologyismainlysuitableforcompaniesthatoperatebigcarbonatereservoir
formations.AlmostallfieldsintheMiddleEastarecarbonateformations,whereacid
drillingcanbedoneincarbonateformationandlimitedtoopenholecompletions,hesaid.
Weareexploringopportunitytointroducethistechnology(throughoutthe)MiddleEast.
Researchanddevelopmentforanacidjetdrillingpackageofnewgenerationisbeing
conductedwillallowtoreceiveinformationaboutthearrangementofchannelsandto
orientthetool.Ourengineersarenowdevelopingnewtechnologiesandapproachesto
fieldoperationsbasedonCTtechnologies,butwecantalkaboutitmoreafterfullfield
trials,Tukenovsaid.Todaywearetechnicallyandtechnologicallypreparedtoperform
drillingoperationsusingCTandhavealreadyreceivedordersforsuchoperations.
