Building a Team
Team builder Display Overview

The team builder screen allows the player to select the characters and feats
to be added to the players team. In addition, the player can set a game point value
and a name for the team. Information on each selected character is displayed in
the center of the screen and text descriptions of feats as well any error messages
are displayed in the area below that.
Selecting a Game Point Value:
Using the up and down arrows on the Game Point Value field the player can
change the games point value from 100 to 10,000 points in 50 point increments.
Once the game point value is selected, the player can view the remaining points

available to spend in the points remaining field. Once the points remaining go below
0 the displayed value becomes negative and is displayed in red until the point value
of the game is increased or the teams cost is reduced.

Setting a team name

Between the game point value and the points remaining field players are
given the option of entering a name for their team. The team name has no effect
until you join a multiplayer game. Once joined in a multiplayer game, all information
your opponent receives from you will be labeled with the team name entered in this
field.
Choosing a set of figures:
Using your computers cursor, select a set of
characters from the dropdown list of available
heroclix sets.

Browsing the available figures

Once you have chosen a set to gather your forces from, select with your
cursor any character in the list. The information in the list displayed for each
character is as follows: Collectors number, the characters rank, (i.e. rookie,
experienced, veteran, unique, limited edition, or bystander token.) characters cost
and the characters name.
In the character display panel on the right of the list, you can see all the
available information of a character you clicked on in a convenient to read format.
On large figures with more than 12 clicks, a slider will appear near the bottom of
the readout to allow you to view clicks further along on the dial.
Adding a figure to the team
Once youve decided a figure is a good match for your team, select the
ADD button below the characters readout to add the character to your team.
Keep an eye on the available team points to make sure you dont overspend!
Browsing the available feats

Adding a feat to a single character

To add a feat to a single figure, first add the character to your team using the
instructions found in Adding a figure to the team. Once added, click on the
character with the mouse, the characters background should change colors. Select
a feat from the dropdown menu. A representation of the text of the feat will
appear in the area below the characters information display. Once the desired
feat is found click on the ADD button to the right of the drop down menu. The
feat title will appear on the selected characters feat table that is on the bottom
half of the selected characters readout panel. In this game, you are only allowed
10 feats per character.
Adding a feat to multiple characters
To add feats to multiple characters, select each with the mouse, the
background of each character should change color. When the ADD button to the
right of the drop down menu is clicked, the feat will be added to each character
that is selected. The feat title will appear in the feat table on the bottom half of
each of the selected characters readout panel.
Add a feat to all characters
To add the same feat to all characters on your team, click on the Add to
All button also to the right of the drop down menu.

Removing a feat from a character

To remove a feat from any character on your team, double click on the feat
in the characters feat table. Any points spent on the feat will be refunded back to
the points remaining total.
Removing a character from the team
To remove a character from the team, double click anywhere on the
characters panel except on the feat table. The cost of any feats that are
remaining on the character will be credited to the points remaining total as well as
the cost of the character. (Players dont have to remove the feats from a
character before removing the character from the team.)
Saving or Loading a Team from memory
Changes in the game
allow for unlimited saves
using a standard file
interface. You do not have to
add the .bin to the end of
your files, but make them
descriptive as possible!

Moving to the Battlefield

To get to the battlefield select View->Battle Field on the menu.

Battlefield Display Overview

The battlefield display is where all the action takes place. Here is where
two teams of heroes and villains battle it out for good and for evil.
The map/battle area comprises most of the display and is where a bulk of the
action takes place. Of course a person cant properly play heroclix without having
access to the wealth of information that is a heroclix game and this is where the
panels on the right come in. On the right is where you view your team stats and
your opponents team stats. Communication and control also have a home on right as
well. The readout panel in the middle shows the results of each action as well as
serves as a record of what has transpired in the game so far. Communications
from your opponent appear on this readout panel too. In addition, each team has
access to the double and single 6 sided dice rolls, Battlefield conditions, and
battlefield objects control panel.
Choosing a map
To choose one of the available maps to play on, select Map->xx.jpg where xx
is the name of the map you wish to play on. It should be noted, in a multiplayer

game, only the server has the option to select which map to play on, the client map
button is disabled until disconnected from the server.
Hidden Objects
Due to popular demand, hidden objects have been added to the beginning of
every game. Click on the objects or drag them to flip them over
Moving your characters and all objects
Moving your characters and objects is as easy as drag and drop. Just place
the mouse cursor over the character or object you wish to move, press the left
mouse button down and then drag the character or object to its new location. Once
you have the character at the desired location just release the mouse button. The
map area will automatically move the object or character into the nearest squares
center. New! The game now draws lines from where you started to where your
moving to in order to help the players keep track of moves. Toggle on the options
menu.
Moving your opponents characters
Once youve entered into a multiplayer game, your opponents characters will
become visible on the map area. Just like in a heroclix tournament though, you are
not allowed to affect your opponents characters in any way such as moving them or
clicking their dial. Objects are a different story however, since no player has any
object exclusively, both players may add, move, exchange, and remove any objects
on the battle field.
Range Attack/Line of Sight Calculator
As you can see in this example,
the Range Attack/Line of
Sight Calculator (RA/LOS)
finds the distance between
any two squares as if the first
square selected were making a
ranged attack.
In addition to finding the
range of an attack, the
RA/LOS also highlights all the squares through which the Line of Sight passes. In

the above example, the shield sniper can see Dr. Doom around the corner of the
house, but the LOS also indicates Dr. Doom gets the +1 defense of the nearby
hindering terrain tree. To activate the RA/LOS calculator, hold down the SHIFT
key on the keyboard while click and dragging on the battlefield map.
Choosing a battlefield condition
Choosing a battlefield condition (BFC) is as easy as selecting a condition
from the drop down menu. Specific text for the BFC can be found in the General
information Panel further down on the screen. Once you have made your selection,
click on the Add BFC button to add the BFC to your team. If you are already
connected in a multiplayer game, the BFC will be added to both teams.
Note: If you add a BFC to your team BEFORE connecting to a multiplayer
game, the BFC will NOT be added to the opponents team when you do
connect. You will have to add the BFC again after you have connected in
order to have it added to the opponents team.
The BFC will be updated on your teams feats/BFC panel the next time you click on
a figure on the battlefield.
Rolling the Dice
Rolling dice is even easier than in a regular tournament. By clicking on the
double dice icon you roll two 6 sided dice and the total appears in the text
information panel in the middle on the right. Clicking on the single die icon earns
you a single 6 sided die roll with the total appearing in the same place. In a
multiplayer game, your dice rolls are transmitted to your opponent where they
appear at the same place on your opponents screen.
Each roll of the dice on your opponents screen is preceded with your teams name
to help your opponent separate their rolls from yours.
Your teams character display panel
The image on the left is your characters
display panel and the object display panel.
Heal/Damage buttons
The Heal and Damage buttons are
located on the bottom left and right of
the character display panel.

Each click of the heal/damage buttons will heal/damage the character

showing in the display panel by one click. The characters display will change
accordingly and a short animation will appear over the character on the battle field.
Of course, you cant heal past the first click or damage past the characters last
click.
Tokens button
The middle button is the Token button. Each click adds one token to the
selected character on the battle field. If a character already has two tokens, then
clicking the token button removes both tokens.
Rotate figure button
When a double base figure is selected on the battle field, the rotate
character button will appear on the character display panel. Clicking this button
will rotate the double base figure 45 degrees clockwise on the battle field.
Continue clicking the button to rotate the figure back to the start position.
Hover/Soar button
When a character with flying is selected on the battlefield, the Hover/Soar
button will appear on the character display panel. Clicking this button will change
the Wings icon for the character on the battlefield. Wings down indicates
hover, while Wings up indicates soaring.
Arch Enemy Rings
You will notice when AEs take the battlefield they will have a colored ring
around their base that will also appear in the character display panel.
You can also tell which characters have AEs when building or searching for
your team by looking at the character readout panel where a small sample of the
AE color will be shown if applicable.
Custom AEs can be achieved by adding a figures collector number and a
color to the sets/AE.lst file. Free tip: dont choose black as your AE color.
All other available colors are represented somewhere in the file. Using any color
name not already in the file as your AE color will most likely result in an error.
Object Display Panel
To the right of the character display panel you will find the object display
panel. Here you will find a short description of the object as well as any special
text or rules that accompany the object on the battlefield. The color ring will

change colors to help illustrate the class of the object. If an object is a light
object the color of the ring will be yellow. Heavy objects have a red ring and
immobile objects have a blue ring. Selecting 3d objects will place a small image of
the 3d object as a background to the object display panel. If the text of an object
should be longer than the text display area, holding the cursor over the text will
enable a pop-up that contains the full text. This is true of nearly every panel in the
game. If you find yourself wondering what the text of a feat is or what the color
on the dial stands for, just hold the cursor over the display in question to get popup help.
Switching out objects
The Object display panel gives you the option of exchanging an object
already on the battlefield with another from the list. Of course, you can only
exchange light objects for light objects and heavy objects can only be exchanged
for other heavy objects. Light or Heavy Objects can be exchanged for immobile
objects.
Carrying and Dropping objects on the Battlefield
The feature of carrying and dropping objects on the battlefield couldnt be
easier to use. Make sure you have selected the figure you want to have carrying
the object. The figure should appear in your teams figure readout panel at the top
right. With the mouse, Right-click on the object you wish to carry. As long as the
object is not being used by another player or being carried by another figure, the
object will move halfway under your figure and become attached. The object is
now off of the battlefield and cannot be manipulated by either player until it is
dropped back onto the battlefield. To drop the object, simply right click on the
carrying figure and the object will return to the battlefield. While an object is
being carried, it will continue to follow the carrying figure on the battlefield.
There is nothing in the game to verify if a carrying figure has the capability
to carry an object (super strength, telekinesis, etc) so be on the lookout for
shenanigans!
Figures cannot be carried in this manner due to the fact that figures are
normaly picked up at the beginning of a move and dropped at the end of a move; the
process is far simpler to just drag the carried figure to its new location.
Free tip: Drop objects before heading to the graveyard! The objects will go
quite willingly to the great beyond.
Toggle Names

The menu bar under options has a feature for turning on and off the names
on the battlefield. The options include toggling all names, toggling your team names,
toggling opposing player names, and toggling all object names. Then N key can be
used while on the battlefield to toggle all names on or off. New in HCOnline, the +
and - keys will make all names larger and smaller on the battlefield.
Your teams Feats/Battlefield Condition panel
Here you will find a display of what feats and battlefield conditions the
character on display has. The two purple fields display BFCs, if any, while the
orange fields display feats. Use the vertical scroll arrows to view all 10 feats in
addition to the BFCs.
General Information Readout Panel
This panel displays relevant information as you are playing the game. Results
of dice rolls, which character moved where, and messages from the opposing player
using the chat feature.
Adding Objects and KOd Characters to
the Battlefield
Using the drop down menu, each player
can add any number of objects listed to
the battle field. Barriers and Smoke
Place 4 objects on the battlefield at
the same time. In cases where feats or
scenarios require a character to be
added/re-added to the battlefield,
selecting a characters name from the list adds the character to the center of the
battlefield. The character will be in the same condition as they were when the
character utilized the newspaper panel.
The Newspaper
Using the mouse, click and drag KOd figures (or a figure in any condition) to
the newspaper panel and release them. Your KOd characters name will be put into
the current headline and the character will be removed from the battle field and
be placed into temporary storage. At any time you wish to bring the character
back onto the battle field utilize the Objects and KOd Characters drop down
menu above the newspaper. Either player can remove objects from the battle field

by dragging them to the newspaper. Any object can be re-added to the battlefield
using the Objects and KOd Characters drop down menu above the newspaper and
the switch objects drop down menu from the objects panel.
Opponents character display panel/Feats BFC panel
The Opponents character display panel works much like your team character
display panel with a few exceptions. You are not allowed to manipulate your
opponents characters in any way, hence the damage, heal, rotate, and add tokens
buttons have all been removed. The feats/BFC panel works identically to your
teams feats/BFC panel.
Battlefield display options
Rotate map 90 rotate the map 90 degrees clockwise.
Toggle all names removes all names from the battlefield.
Toggle Home team names - toggles display of your figure names.
Toggle Opposing team names toggles display of opponents figure names.
Toggle Object names toggles display of object names only.
Creating a Multiplayer Game
Creating a multiplayer game is very simple. Once on the battle field display screen,
choose from the menu: Multiplayer->Host Game. A selection dialog will appear in
the center of the screen. As the host, you must select the PORT in which your
computer will communicate with your opponent. After selecting a port number, you
MUST inform your opponent which port you have chosen so that your games can
connect. New! You can now select a number of players from 2-4!

After hitting OK, Thats it. Your game is under way. Of course, no one is going to
know you have a game waiting to be played unless you tell them. In order for an
opponent to connect to your game you will have to give them your IP address. To
find your IP in windows, go to Start->Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt.
This will open a black background window on your desktop. In this window type:
ipconfig without the quotes. If you are not behind a router, you will find your
actual IP address listed on the results of the ipconfig command.
If you are on a network or behind a router consult your network
administrator or router manual on how to obtain an IP address or if you have

access to the web, try http://www.whatismyip.com/. If you are behind a firewall,

you may need to open TCP port 4444 or 32561, or 247 to allow incoming client
connections. (Since version 1.5 it has come to light that port 4444 may be blocked
by some Internet Service Providers due to its association with internet worm
activity, as a result, 32561 and 247 were added for those who have had trouble
using 4444)
Joining a Multiplayer Game
To join a multiplayer game, have the hosts IP address and PORT ready. In
the battle field screen, select Multiplayer -> Join Game on the menu. A small
screen will appear in the middle of the battle field into which you must add the
Hosts IP address and select a port to connect on.

Type the hosts IP into the box as the example illustrates. Choose the port that
the host has provided you from the drop down (default is 4444) Hit OK when
finished to create a connection to the host. The host must have already have a
game started and a connection waiting in order to connect to them.
Chatting with your opponent
Once connected to your opponent, you can press the t key to open a chat
dialog. After typing the message, press enter to send the message to your
opponent. The game will continue in the background while the chat dialogue is on
the screen, however, the chat dialog cannot be hidden or moved unless enter is
pressed. Even with this simple chat, a fuller voice or text chat might be in order
to experience the game at its best. Try http://rogerwilco.gamespy.com/ or
http://messenger.msn.com/ or http://www.goteamspeak.com/ to name just a few.
End of Game
There is no score kept in Heroclix Online. To promote the free play of
heroclix, the players will have to decide on the victory conditions to meet and keep
their own score.
Custom Feats, Battlefield Conditions and Objects

Custom Feats, Battlefield Conditions, Maps, and Objects can be added to the
game using the instructions found in their respective files. Feats.lst, Objects.lst,
and BFC.lst in the sets folder and the Maps.lst in the maps folder. Custom
characters cannot be added to the game at this time.
SPECTRE Large figure and Angry Spirits
The large figure SPECTRE is new in 2006 and comes with its own scenario.
Detailed instructions can be found in the folder HC Rules in the file Spectre
Rules.pdf. Basically, each time SPECTRE gets attacked you may add an ANGRY
SPIRIT Bystander token or Pog to the battlefield to fight on SPECTREs side.
Each attack on SPECTRE changes the powers of the Pogs drastically.
In order to play this scenario in Heroclix Online you must prepare your Pogs
beforehand. Add the maximum number of Pogs allowed by the scenario to
SPECTREs team (they are 0 cost) and then enter the battlefield. Once in the
battlefield, use the newspaper to remove the Pogs from the battle field
temporarily. When the time comes to add an ANGRY SPIRIT (Pog) to the
battlefield utilize the instructions in Adding Objects and KOd Characters to the
Battlefield section.
As for changing the powers of the Pogs with every attack of SPECTRE, the
players will have to keep track of what click the Pogs are currently on and change
them all to be the same.
An excerpt taken from the scenario: If an Angry Spirit is dealt damage,
remove it from the battlefield. When an Angry Spirit is dealt damage, turn the
Angry Spirit dial a number of clicks equal to the total damage dealt.
Since there is no Angry Spirit dial on this games SPECTRE, each Angry
Spirit Pog has been given its own dial. When the time comes, turn all the Angry
Spirit Pogs dials according to the scenario rules quoted above. A good way to keep
track of the dials is utilizing the in game chat system. Players can then scroll up
through the chat record to find what click the Pogs were last on and change them
all accordingly. See the scenario in the file Spectre Rules.pdf to get all the
details of how to play the new SPECTRE character.
Search Feature

The search feature is self explanatory except for a couple of options you dont see
on any online search engines:
Select Search terms using the mouse button and clicking on the lists
De-select Search terms by holding the control key <CTRL> on the keyboard
and click on selected search terms to de-select them.
Clear Selections button clears all selections faster than manually clicking
on each selection holding the control key on the keyboard
Add to team button adds the selected character to the team on the
teambuilding page
Recent features added include the ability to search by value. You want
figures with a movement greater than 12? You can search it. Playing a
scenario with no attack values over 9? You can search it. You want to put
BRILLIANT TACTICIAN on someone but dont know what your choices are?

Search has been changed to be more inclusive! When selecting multiple

powers in the same category, such as outwit and perplex, search looks for all
figures with BOTH powers instead of the old way which searched for either
power.
Custom Figure Creation Screen

With the inclusion of the custom figure creation page, you can create the
most comic book accurate clix ever!
If you have made it this far, you know what most of these buttons and
doodads do. The save feature will be the hardest to master so we will start
and end there.
You have 3 options for saving your custom figure.
1. you can save your figure to a blank file
2. you can save your figure to the end of a file that has other figs
already in it
3. You can OVERWRITE a currently existing figure with your new
figure.

Lets start with option 1 Saving into a blank file: Pressing save will
bring up a file choosing save dialog box like youve seen before. Just type in
the name of the file you would like to save your figure in and press SAVE.
The next step allows you to browse your newly created file in-game:
In order to view your new file in-game you will need to add the name of the
file you just created to the sets.lst file. Inside the file, add your
information while following the format of the other files already inside the
sets.lst. A restart of the game may be required to see the your changes to
sets.lst (sets.lst file can be found in the directory where you installed the
game in the folder called sets.)
Option 2 Saving into an existing file: Pressing save brings up the
same save dialog box, select a file you want to save your figure into and
press SAVE. Your figure will be written into the file at the bottom. If you
havnt already added this set to your sets.lst file, do so at your leisure. If
the file you just added to already exists in sets.lst then the view in Custom
Figures should refresh allowing you to see your figure in the figure list
immediatly.
Option 3 - Overwriting an existing figure. This is a bit tricky at first
but can be easily mastered. One things to check beforehand: the figure you
are about to write to a file must have the exact same collectors number as
the figure you are trying to overwrite. This value is and should be unique to
every figure in the game. No two figures should have the same collectors
number (an example of a collectors number is: or081) (Its Vet Shazam from
Origins). Once you have established that your custom figure has the same
collectors number is the figure in the file you are trying to replace, you then
hit the save button. In the File choosing dialog box that pops up, select the
file that the original character is stored in and press Save. A Dialog
confirmation box will appear in which you will confirm one last time your
choice to overwrite an existing character.
There is no way to delete characters from a file at this time.
The limit on files that contain figures is set to 100 so feel free to
divide up your custom figures into as many files as you see fit, as long as
theyre divided into less than 100 files.
Fing Fang Foom Large figure and Rage Dial

The large figure Fing Fang Foom is new in 2007 and comes with its own
scenario. Detailed instructions can be found in the Downloadable Fing Fang Foom
rules pdf file from the wizkidsgames.com website . In Scenario Play, When Fing
Fang Foom takes the field, he brings with him a Rage Dial. As Play progresses, the
Rage Dial turns and new terrain is created based on the images that are showing on
the Rage dial.
In order to play this scenario in Heroclix Online you must prepare your Rage
Dial beforehand. Add the Rage Dial to Fing Fang Fooms team (it is 0 cost) and then
enter the battlefield.
Special Powers
A short introduction to HCOnline Special Powers file:
Enter your special powers between the ::SpecialPowersStart and
::SpecialPowersEnd tags. Anything outside of these tags is ignored.
Each entry on a single line is seperated by a tab character <tab>
The line breaks down as follows:
first, the collectors number of the figure you want the special powers to
appear on. Remember when creating custom characters, they MUST have a unique
collectors number or the search engine and special powers among other things get
confused.
Seperate with a <TAB>
The next entry on the line indicates what slot on the dial you want the
special power to appear on, choices are: Move, Attack, Defense and Damage.
Seperate with a <TAB>
This entry indicates what click(s) you want the power to appear on. choices
are 1-??. If you specify a value greater than the size of the dial you will not be
able to see your special power of course.
Seperate with a <TAB>
This entry is the text you want to appear when the power is inspected and
the power's text is displayed. (tooltip, etc..)
Save your file in the /sets directory with any name you like as long as it
ends with .spl
HCOnline looks for all .spl files in /sets and reads the contents of each.
An example from Legion of Super Heroes Collectors set follows:
::SpecialPowersStart
le002 Attack
3,4,5 TELEPATHIC COORDINATION: Once during your turn
(but not during another action), as a free action Saturn Girl modifies by +2 the

attack value or defense value of any other target friendly character for the
duration of an action. Saturn Girl must be within 10 squares of and have a clear line
of fire to the target.
le005 Damage
1,2,3,4
DISRUPTION: If Phantom Girl moves through or
occupies the same space as an object, or at the end of a move action is adjacent to
an object or an opposing character carrying an object, you may remove the object
from the game.
::SpecialPowersEnd
Keywords
A short introduction to HCOnline Keywords file:
Enter your Keywords between the ::start figures
and ::end figures tags. Anything outside of these tags is ignored.
Each entry on a single line is seperated by a tab character <tab> or a <space>
character
The line breaks down as follows:
first, the collectors number of the figure you want the keywords to appear
on. Remember when creating custom characters, they MUST have a unique
collectors number or the search engine and keywords among other things get
confused.
Seperate with a <SPACE>
The next entry on the line is the name of the figure, currently, this
information is not used. Anything can be put here but at least something must be
put here.
Separate with a <TAB>
This next part is a list of Keywords you want associated with the collectors
number at the beginning of the line. Each Keyword is seperated by a comma (,).
Spelling , Capatilization are important as any mistakes will show up on a separate
entry in the search engine.
Save your file in the /sets directory with any name you like as long as it
ends with .kwl
HCOnline looks for all .kwl files in /sets and reads the contents of each.
An example from Origin set follows:
::start figures
or001 Blackhawks Blackhawks,Past,Soldier
or002 Blackhawks Blackhawks,Past,Soldier
or003 Blackhawks Blackhawks,Past,Soldier

::end figures
Battlefield Zoom
Players can now zoom in on the battlefield. Pressing the z key, the middle
mouse button, or Alt+Left Click on the map will zoom in on the map 2x.
A click-drag with the mouse in a direction off of the map will cause the map
to scroll in that direction.
Those with a middle mouse button (or who Alt-Left Click) will note that
clicking on a particular area of a map will cause the map to zoom in and scroll to the
location of the click. The z key zoom will always go to the top left corner of the
map.
Draft Game
You may now play a Draft Game with HCOnline! After connecting to your
opponent, choose your favorite Heroclix sets to draft from, up to 5 boosters
worth, and the game will randomly pack your boosters with figures and then unpack
them onto the battlefield. There is a 100% chance to get a pog in your booster if
the set contains any. 24% chance to get a unique if there are any in the set. (old
packaging pre armor wars was 16% and new way is 33% = HCOnline gives you 24% )
Feats and BFCs are not included in the draft game. Drafting from Collectors sets
and custom sets may have interesting or error prone results. You can find the
Draft Game under the multiplayer menu of when on the battleground.
If you draft a game BEFORE connecting to your opponent, your drafted
figures will be removed from the Battlefield when you connect and you will have to
draft again.

Saving/Loading a Multiplayer Game

Players can now save their multiplayer games. (Only the host can save a game
though) . Saving a game is as easy as: play a game with another player, the Host
selects the menu option Save Game under multiplayer, and selects a location to
save the game to in the file chooser. To load a multiplayer, connect to another
player in a multiplayer game and select Load Game to wipe the current contents of
the game and load the saved game. If your are playing a multiplayer game with

more than 2 people, order of connection to the server is important. When a game is
loaded, HCOnline will distribute teams to players in the same order the players
connected to the game. A serious limitation I know but something I will have to
work on. If you find youve gotten a team that isnt yours, disconnect and try
changing the order of the connections to the server and reload again until youve
gotten your team
.
